00:00Echelon, winning the WBC's 154-pound belt.
00:05Tonight, the resurrection continues as he takes on a title holder of a different sort,
00:10the contender champion Sergio Mora.
00:12Closely paralleling the career of Vernon Forrest is recently dethroned champion Paul Williams.
00:18This tall, undefeated welterweight champion had compiled 33 wins and owned an heir of invincibility.
00:25But four months ago, he was embarrassed for 12 rounds by decided underdog Carlos Quintana.
00:33Tonight, Vernon Forrest hopes to continue his resurgence,
00:36and Paul Williams vies for revenge in a night where the stakes are resurrection and redemption.
00:55Evander Holyfield pulls off with colossal upset.
01:10Corrales comes back, and the fight is over!
01:14Unbelievable!
01:15Oh, down goes Marquez!
01:18Revenge for Israel Lovazquez!
01:21Fists are flying, firing bombs!
01:24Big action here!
01:25What a heavy right hand!
01:27It's all over!
01:28We've got a new champion!
01:30We've got a new champion!
01:31June is busting out on Showtime Sports, and it all starts right here in scenic New England.
01:44Yes, we're at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, one of the most popular resort casinos on the East Coast.
01:51Welcome to America's Fight Night!
01:53The fans, always enthusiastic and spirited here at the beautiful Mohegan Sun Arena tonight.
02:02They'll be treated to a world title doubleheader.
02:05In our main event, three-time champion Vernon Forrest will defend his WBC super welterweight crown
02:11against undefeated contender series champion Sergio Mora.
02:15And for openers, the rematch of a very entertaining first encounter between Carlos Quintana and Paul Williams
02:21with the WBO welterweight championship on the line.
02:24It's fight night in Connecticut.
02:31Hello again, everybody.
02:32Steve Albert from Mohegan Sun.
02:34Tonight's storyline offers a stark contrast, an aging champion in one title match and a young former champion in the other.
02:41In 2002, Vernon Forrest convincingly defeated Shane Mosley.
02:46Going in, Mosley was considered the best fighter in the world.
02:50So coming out, what did that make Forrest?
02:53Ever since, Forrest, now 37, has been trying to recapture the glory.
02:58After outpointing Antonio Margarito, 26-year-old Paul Williams was considered a superstar in the making.
03:04But then he lost his welterweight title to Carlos Quintana.
03:07Tonight, he gets the chance to regain not only the title, but his reputation as well.
03:14With that, let me bring on my ringside partner, Al Bernstein.
03:17And Al, all four fighters on tonight's card have something to prove.
03:20Yeah, and you'd think they wouldn't because amongst them they have 123 fights and only four losses.
03:25And two of those are by one fighter.
03:27But this is boxing, where every silver lining of every cloud has a dark spot.
03:34And, you know, for Vernon Forrest, he hasn't lost in five years, fighting very well.
03:39But at 37 years of age, with injuries in his recent past, many wonder, can he keep it up?
03:45Now, Sergio Mora has never lost.
03:47He's 4-0-1 since he won the contender series.
03:50But even he admits he was subpar in his last two fights.
03:53And most observers feel he has avoided big challenges.
03:56Tonight, he can disprove both assertions.
04:02Carlos Quintana has had only one bad fight in 26, a loss to Miguel Cotto.
04:07Yet, there is a strong sentiment that his win over Williams was a fluke.
04:11Now, he wants to prove that a myth tonight.
04:14Paul Williams, still just 26, is only one fight removed from his storing win over Antonio Margarito.
04:20And yet, his only loss is a pro, as many suggesting he was overrated to begin with.
04:25Fair or not, all these questions about these fighters are real.
04:31And Al Forrest, very out of character, took some verbal shots at Mora.
04:35We're used to hearing that stuff, but not from the normally reserved and respectful Vernon Forrest.
04:41And that leads us to tonight's poll question, as we invite you to text your responses to us here at SHOTV.
04:48That's 74688.
04:50Whom would you like to see the winner of Forrest vs. Mora fight next?
04:55For Shane Mosley, text the number one.
04:57For Corey Spinks, text the number two.
04:59And for Ricardo Mayorga, text the number three.
05:02Text your response to us at 74688.
05:05Standard text messaging rate supply.
05:07Coming up first, Carlos Quintana and Paul Williams meet for the second time in four months.
05:15A reprise of an upset of the year candidate, in which Quintana shot the boxing world with a sensational win over the previously unbeaten Williams.
05:24Now?
05:24Well, you know, Steve, there have been many theories floated to explain Carlos Quintana's upset win over Paul Williams.
05:32Most of them center on Paul's preparation, both physical and mental,
05:36which suggests that the X's and O's of that bout and what Quintana achieved were irrelevant.
05:42I beg to disagree.
05:43And that's why tonight's strategies and techniques are very important.
05:47It's especially important for Williams, who lost the first fight.
05:55One of the improvements needed is doubling the jab more often.
05:58He missed a lot of his punches high in the last fight.
06:01He needs to aim for Quintana's chest.
06:03The straight left is not as available against Quintana.
06:07His right hook landed more often in the first fight.
06:10In awkward inside action, Williams takes advantage of Quintana's low hands to land this very big right hook.
06:17Carlos Quintana created angles that did not allow Williams to set and deliver big punches.
06:30He needs to do that tonight for sure.
06:33Williams may unload a huge volume of punches early.
06:35Quintana needs to keep his poise during that onslaught.
06:39And Carlos was surprisingly effective in delivering the left hand in a variety of ways.
06:44When Williams missed with punches, like this right hand, he often went off balance.
06:53Quintana was able to deliver good straight lefts.
06:56Quintana hopes for more of this tonight.
06:58Going into his last fight, Paul Williams was viewed as not only one of the best young fighters in the world,
07:16but one of the most avoided.
07:18The tall southpaw was a significant favorite to beat Carlos Quintana
07:23and seemed destined for a mega fight with Miguel Cotto.
07:27Simply put, he was supposed to win.
07:30But Al, the Punisher was punished in a stunning loss.
07:34Was he looking ahead?
07:35Does Quintana have his number?
07:37Was it merely an off night?
07:39Or was he overrated?
07:41A lot of questions, and you know, it may boil down in this rematch to whether Paul Williams accepts
07:47that Carlos Quintana may have done just a couple of good things in that fight,
07:51and it wasn't all about him.
07:53For his sake and for his fans' sake, you hope he made some adjustments for this fight.
07:58Well, he's very loose as he waved to the crowd, acknowledging the fans.
08:04So the big question tonight, how will Paul Williams respond in his first fight since his first defeat?
08:11The oddsmakers have their answer, making him a slight favorite,
08:15despite the fact he was dominated in the original by Carlos Quintana.
08:34Easy-going lefty, Carlos Quintana hearing it from the crowd in his first title defense.
08:45His win over Williams, surprising given the way he was overpowered by Miguel Cotto
08:50and the way Williams beat Margarito.
08:53And interesting how he was exposed by Cotto in a brutal loss, yet he exposed Williams.
09:00Quintana outboxed and outslugged Williams, Al.
09:03But tonight, he's got to prove himself all over again.
09:08And he feels that, and I think he is happy about that.
09:11You know, it will motivate him to perform here tonight.
09:15You know, he thought it was an aberration that he was such a big underdog
09:17in the first fight against Williams because the only bad fight he ever had was against Cotto,
09:22so he thinks he will prove again tonight he's just better.
09:29Well, he's clearly the crowd favorite.
09:32We'll see if Carlos Quintana, at age 31, has another fight of his life left in him.
09:38And let's size him up as we check the tail of the tape.
09:46Williams turns 27 next month with the focus on his height and reach.
09:50He's four and a half inches taller with a whopping nine-inch reach advantage,
09:54and both trim and ready.
09:56Judging by their weights from yesterday, you'll recall Williams struggled with his weight
09:59before the first fight.
10:01And the notable unified rules for this world title fight,
10:05there's no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
10:08A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
10:11If an accidental headbutt causes a fight to end within four rounds, it's a no decision.
10:15After four rounds, they go to the scorecards.
10:17And if a punch causes a cut, and the injured fighter can't continue, he loses by TKO.
10:26So here at Mohegan Sun, a rare immediate rematch.
10:30Quintana Williams 2 for the WBO Welterweight title.
10:34The formal introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.

11:30And from Rivervale, New Jersey, Steve Weisfeld.
11:35Introducing to you our third man of the ring, a referee in charge,
11:38hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Ed Claudio.
11:43All right, fans, here we go.
11:46Twelve rounds of boxing, then a rematch for the WBO Welterweight Championship of the World.
11:57Introducing to you first the challenger on my left,
12:01fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black trunks with gold trim,
12:04hailing from Aiken, South Carolina.
12:08He weighed in at a trim and ready, 145 and three-quarter pounds,
12:12with a fine record of 33 wins and one defeat.
12:16He has 24 wins coming by way of knockout.
12:20Currently ranked the number one contender.
12:23Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the former WBO Welterweight Champion of the World.
12:30Introducing Paul, the Punisher, William.
12:35And his opponent across the ring, the defending world champion on my right,
12:45riding out of the red corner, wearing blue trunks with silver trim,
12:50hailing from Monca, Puerto Rico.
12:54He weighed in at a ready, 146 pounds.
12:58His fine record stands at 25 wins,
13:00one loss, 19 wins coming by way of knockout tonight.
13:06He is making the first defense of his title.
13:09Here is the defending WBO Welterweight Champion of the World.
13:14Introducing Carlos and Indio Quintana.
13:20Once again, a referee in charge, Ed Claudio,
13:28now to give instructions, 12 championship rounds of boxing schedule.
13:33All right, Paul, Carlos, Paul.
13:38Okay, Paul, Carlos, you received your instructions in the dressing room.
13:43We're going 12 rounds or less for the WBO Welterweight Championship of the World.
13:46I believe it's a little high, Paul.
13:49Let's bring it down some.
13:50Anything from here on down, it's going to be considered low.
13:53Okay?
13:54All right?
13:55Okay, all I ask for is a good, clean fight.
13:57Obey my commands at all times.
13:59Protect yourself.
14:00Touch him up.
14:06Let's get popping.
14:12The height differential immediately noticeable.
14:15Well, Dimbaugh, the Quintana, the first time.
14:17The skillful champion has to be confident.
14:20He outclassed Williams early in the first go-round.
14:23Williams said he'll be more aggressive at the outset here in this sequel of Southpaws.
14:29He certainly should be highly motivated.
14:32Here we go.
14:34Two left-handers, Paul Williams.
14:36And the black trunk's a boxing anomaly in that he's a tall, lanky fighter who usually puts pressure on his opponent.
14:44But in the first fight, he was befuddled by Quintana's constant movement and angles.
14:49Quintana in the blue trunks with the white trim.
14:53Typically, Williams throws over 100 to 125 punches a round.
14:58But what does it mean if they don't land?
15:01So the onus is on Williams to adjust, and has he learned from his mistakes?
15:07And he landed a right hook right off the bat.
15:10That's the punch they landed more often against Quintana.
15:13Not so much his straight left, which would anticipate.
15:16Nice right hand got in by Quintana.
15:19You'd think Quintana shouldn't have to change much of anything, but his people said there will be a few surprises.
15:26What do you suppose they meant?
15:28Yeah, that's a good question.
15:30It might be more pressure from Carlos Quintana as this fight wears on.
15:34But certainly early on, he'll want to do what he did before, and that is counterpunch and land goes kind of left-hand,
15:40which he did throughout the first fight despite the height advantage for Williams.
15:44The straight left and the right hook by Quintana was tremendous in the first fight.
15:48There was a good right hand by Williams.
15:52Williams clearly has to bring more passion, more energy, more pressure.
15:55Got to attack the body, keep Quintana at the end of that long jab, take Quintana out of his comfort zone.
16:02Williams landed.
16:03Oh, there you go, there you go.
16:10Williams jumping all over Quintana.
16:12Quintana almost went down.
16:14Quintana in trouble early.
16:15He's on the canvas.
16:16Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
16:28Over a minute left to go in this round.
16:30There's plenty of time for Paul Williams.
16:32Quintana down for just the second time in his career.
16:36He went down in the first round against Joel Julio, came back to win by decision.
16:40How will he fair hair?
16:43What a reversal of force and another left lands.
16:46Quintana's in trouble.
16:47Claudio steps in.
16:48The fight is over.
16:52What a bounce back by Paul Williams, who recaptures the title in emphatic fashion.
16:58I think that nobody expected this quick an ending, and it put Paul Williams back on the map in a major way.
17:10He said he wanted to bring more passion and energy.
17:13I think he did.
17:14A dazed and disoriented Carlos Quintana.
17:33Very disappointing for him.
17:34He thought he could show that that first win was not an aberration.
17:37Talk about retribution.
17:47We'll see how it happened.
17:49Very close first round until that straight left hand stunned Quintana.
17:55That changed this fight inexorably, and Quintana was trying to kind of stay out of harm's way.
18:01Then the right hook there and a straight left created more damage.
18:05And now Carlos Quintana in major trouble, getting ready to go down for the first time.
18:17And as we take a look at how this first knockdown was created, Quintana tried to stay close to Williams
18:23so he wouldn't be hit with these shots.
18:24But Paul Williams is a good inside fighter, even though he's a big, tall guy.
18:28And you see him making the most of his opportunities while Quintana was inside
18:33and then finally was able to get another one of those straight left hands in.
18:36And with about one minute left in the round at that point, Carlos Quintana was in major trouble.
18:43Then the second knockdown.
18:46Williams again landing hooks, straight left hands, setting things up with the jab.
18:52And even though he's throwing a lot of punches, he's making the most of those punches.
18:55And once he got against that corner, Carlos was in major trouble.
18:58And at this point, referee Claudio stopping the match when he went down the second time.
19:06Very important nuance.
19:09Williams setting up that left hand with the jab.
19:11Even though he had Quintana in trouble, he didn't forget about his boxing basics.
19:16And that's very important.
19:17You know, Paul Williams hasn't had this kind of big knockout victory against top welterweights.
19:24That's why, for a guy that's called the Punisher, who knocked out a lot of people earlier in his career,
19:29this is an important win.
19:31Paul Williams, who reported to the arena at 156 pounds, gets his revenge.
19:37Let's go up into the ring.
19:39And the official word from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
19:41Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of two minutes, 15 seconds in round number one.
19:52A referee in charge, Ed Claudio, stops the contest.
19:55He is the winner by way of technical knockout.
19:58And he is once again the WDO welterweight champion of the world, Paul the Punisher, William.
20:10What a feeling of satisfaction for this young man.
20:18Paul Williams climbing back onto the throne.
20:21Once again, the WBO welterweight champion, lifting his record to 34-1.
20:27Paul Williams and George Peterson, his manager, said it was all about what he didn't do in the last fight.
20:33They said, when we land punches like the straight left that he's landing here and put our punches together,
20:38Carlos Quintana will go down.
20:41And they were right because Paul Williams got it done.
20:44Well, they both went down, but Quintana went first.
20:47Let's go up to Jim Gray.
20:49All right, Steve.
20:50Thank you very much.
20:51Paul, congratulations.
20:52I know how much this has bothered you since the last fight.
20:55What was the major difference tonight?
20:57Was it in your training?
20:58Was it in the fact that you were five pounds lighter tonight?
21:01What exactly was it?
21:02You know, we had a good training camp, you know what I'm saying?
21:05We had a good spot with Louis Collazo, Curtis Smith.
21:08Then we got David Robertson, my skill trainer, you know what I'm saying?
21:10He put in a lot of work.
21:11We did four o'clock in the morning, three o'clock in the morning.
21:13We ended up working out skill training and stuff, you know?
21:16And, you know what I'm saying?
21:16Like, I can't take nothing for Quintana.
21:18He caught me on an off night, you know what I'm saying?
21:20That's what guys do.
21:21You catch up all night before you get this guy out of there.
21:25But this time, you know, hey, everything was good.
21:28Clicking on with points.
21:29So we came in there and I saw you what time.
21:30Hey, the power is there.
21:32You know, hey, I want to add whoever you want.
21:34How did you feel as though you would respond after your first defeat?
21:37Oh, man, you can't accept winning if you can't accept losing.
21:41So that defeat, that's when they said I lost.
21:43Okay, let's go have some fun now, you know what I mean?
21:46That's how I take it because, you know, it's business.
21:48But after that loss, you know what I'm saying?
21:51We got back to the gym, me and Miss Peterson, you know what I'm saying?
21:53He gave my time off.
21:54Then we looked at the films, what we're going to do, you know what I'm saying?
21:57We're going to let this guy come to us this time and stuff, you know what I'm saying?
22:00Then, you know, got back in the thing and got this back, you know what I'm saying?
22:02I told everybody, you know what I'm saying?
22:04My pants fall, my belt back.
22:05You got it back now.
22:07What would you like to do with it now that you have it back?
22:09What next?
22:09Well, I think I'm about one and go, you know what I'm saying?
22:12I want to get some fights with Cotto, Margarita, or Delahoy since Mayweather retired.
22:17You know, hey, you know, I want to, hey, if the fans pay their money, see something, ask them something good.
22:22And I think, hey, I'm right here.
22:24All right.
22:25Well, congratulations, Paul.
22:26Certainly was quick work tonight.
22:28Thank you for talking to us.
22:29Oh, yeah.
22:29All right.
22:30Champion once again.
22:31Back to you, Steve.
22:33All right.
22:34Thank you very much, Jim.
22:36So a dramatic first round knockout for Paul Williams to regain the WBO welterweight title
22:43in boxing's strongest, most glamorous division.
22:46And, Al, this sets up a plethora of wonderful opportunities for this young man.
22:52You know, Paul Williams is in a very enviable position.
22:54Not only does he have the welterweight title again,
22:57he also is a fighter who many people expect to really make his mark at 154 in the near future.
23:01And now that Floyd Mayweather isn't going to fight Oscar De La Hoya,
23:04I'm sure he's going to push for that fight.
23:06And there are a lot of other fights out there for that young man.
23:09And he and his promoter, Danny Goosen, very happy right now.
23:14A great night for 26-year-old Paul Williams.
23:21Back in the saddle, avenging his loss of four months ago to Carlos Quintana.
23:26A first-round knockout, a stunning first-round knockout for Paul Williams.
23:32Well, with one fight complete, here's a reminder about tonight's text message poll question.
23:37Whom would you like to see the winner of Forrest vs. Bora fight next?
23:43For Shane Mosley, text the number one.
23:46For Corey Spinks, text the number two.
23:48For Ricardo Mayorga, text the number three.
23:51We text you a response to us here at SHOTV.
23:55That's 74688.
23:57Standard text messaging rates apply.
24:04As we come back to ringside, we're sad to report that broadcasting lost a legend today.
24:10Beloved sports commentator Jim McKay passed away at the age of 86.
24:15And now I had the pleasure of meeting Jim when I was just starting out in the broadcasting business.
24:19And he couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating.
24:22And that's one of those memories that stays with you forever.
24:25Well, and I think that describes Jim McKay.
24:27Grace off the camera and on the camera as well.
24:30And, you know, the interesting thing for all of us who are in the sportscasting business now and for the future.
24:36Jim McKay left an important legacy.
24:38He was the first of the true storytellers as a sportscaster.
24:41And that alone, I think, is a legacy that is very important.
24:46And he'll be very missed.
24:47All right, Al, another life that Jim McKay touched is our own Jim Gray.
24:52Jim?
24:53Steve, indeed he did.
24:54It was about 30 years ago that I had my first, my very first network television job
24:59was to keep score for Jim McKay and his then partner Dave Marr for golf at the U.S. Open
25:04and at the PGA Championship.
25:06And he was such a nice, kind, gentle man.
25:09It was right then that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in this business because of the way that he behaved.
25:15Several years later, I had the opportunity to meet and to speak with Nelson Mandela.
25:19And he told me something I never forgot.
25:20He said, people will forget what you do and people will forget what you say.
25:24But no one will ever forget the way you make them feel.
25:28Well, Jim McKay, both on and off the air, made people feel very, very good.
25:34What better legacy to have than that?
25:39Thanks so much, Jim.
25:41We extend our deepest condolences to the family and close friends of Jim McKay from everyone at Showtime.
25:47When Sergio Mora won the tournament on the first season of the contender, he received attention, exposure, and adulation
26:02that generally elude even the most accomplished of boxing stars.
26:07But what didn't come with that title was acknowledgement and standing inside the sport of boxing.
26:12Tonight, Mora fights not only to win a world title,
26:14but to win the respect and gain the credibility that a reality show failed to provide.
26:21Before we get to our main event, let's see what's coming up in the near future on Showtime Sports.

28:44Joining us now, the gentleman who hosted the very first mixed martial arts telecast on network TV on CBS last week,
28:51which will be rebroadcast, of course, this Friday on Showtime.
28:54Gus Johnson visits with us.
28:55Gus, it was quite an evening last weekend with the first mixed martial arts show on network TV.
29:01A historic first.
29:02How did it feel to be involved in that kind of first?
29:04Well, you know, it was a fascinating time.
29:07It was really exciting.
29:08It was nerve-wracking.
29:09We had an opportunity to highlight some up-and-coming artists and kind of a new sport, new sport for new viewers.
29:17So it was just a wonderful experience, and I was just so pleased to be a part of it.
29:21And, you know, for those people that maybe don't really pay attention to mixed martial arts, they maybe think it's just a simple sport.
29:26It's not.
29:27There are many nuances, many disciplines, and many layers to it.
29:30You yourself even have gotten involved in it to kind of teach yourself how hard it is.
29:35You're absolutely right.
29:36I've had an opportunity to study a little bit of jiu-jitsu.
29:39And, you know, not only are you standing like a boxer, but, you know, the mixed martial artist can use his elbows, his knees, and his feet as well.
29:45And then when the sport hits the ground, jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling and all kinds of different moves start to come into play, and it makes it really interesting.
29:55Yeah, a lot of disciplines involved, that's for sure.
29:57Now, in that first show on network TV, there was maybe a little more drama in the fights involving the big names than they would have hoped for with Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano.
30:07It made it very exciting for the viewers, though.
30:09No doubt about it.
30:10Everybody talked about Kimbo Slice.
30:12He's the legendary street fighter from South Florida.
30:14The big question was, what would happen when he hit the ground?
30:17And we get an opportunity to see what happens to Kimbo against James the Colossus Thompson when the fight hits the ground because it hits the ground early and often.
30:25As for Gina Carano, she came in a little bit heavy.
30:28Caitlin Young, a terrific kickboxer from Minnesota, took her to the wall.
30:32Some interesting twists and turns in that, Matt, that's for sure.
30:34Ably called by this man and a great broadcast team.
30:37Gus, thanks for being with us.
30:38Thank you so much, Al.
30:38All right, so you can see that great show again Friday, June 13th at 11 p.m., right here on Showtime, and it's well worth watching.
30:47Now, the following night, we'll have a great Aliyah XC show, a lightweight matchup of great interest with very different styles.
30:55Boxer, kickboxer, KJ Noons goes against all-around mixed martial artist Eve Edwards.
31:05That was a fighter.
31:06I'm a fighter.
31:07I was born for this.
31:13Are you looking for a little bit of KJ Noons now?
31:16No, me and KJ go way back.
31:18He's got that goal, and that's the whole reason why we do this.
31:22Friendship's got to step aside for those five rounds.
31:24We've got to throw down.
31:26We've got to throw down.
31:28At the end of the fight, I see my hand being raised.
31:31I'm taking it.
31:32To knock someone out, that's the best feeling.
31:35I want people to watch me fight and then be like, that's just awesome.
31:39I want people to watch me fight.
31:40I want people to watch me fight.
31:40I want people to watch me fight.
