00:00:00Now to the main event. They met for the first time in December 1995 in the big room at Madison Square Garden.
00:00:07Tracy Patterson fighting with his estranged father, former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, at ringside.
00:00:13It was a bout in which Gotti got off to a fast start, landing power shots in the first two rounds,
00:00:18ultimately leading to that knockdown in the second round on a right uppercut.
00:00:22By the seventh round, Arturo was still throwing combinations, but Tracy Patterson was beginning to land in return.
00:00:29By round 10, the momentum of the bout had clearly shifted, with Tracy Patterson finishing the exchanges in the middle of the ring,
00:00:36even as Arturo Gotti continued to land.
00:00:39And as Patterson landed these shots in the 11th, Arturo Gotti was beginning to have the problem,
00:00:44which would later surface more dramatically in the Wilson-Rodriguez fight.
00:00:47You can see from this corner camera shot between rounds 11 and 12,
00:00:51both of Gotti's eyes had closed by the time they fought the finishing round.
00:00:55A big rally for Tracy Patterson here left him with the impression that he should have won the bout,
00:01:00but when the judges' scorecards were read, it was instead a unanimous decision for Arturo Gotti.
00:01:07Gotti lifted Patterson's title.
00:01:09That's what gives Patterson the revenge motive as they come back for the second meeting tonight.
00:01:14Now, Larry, I mentioned that Tracy Patterson fought that first fight with New York State Boxing Commissioner Floyd Patterson,
00:01:21his adoptive father, former two-time heavyweight champion, seated at ringside.
00:01:25George Foreman observed that evening that it had to be a monumental distraction for Patterson
00:01:30because of his strained relationship with his father.
00:01:33Patterson said to us, no, it didn't mean a thing to me.
00:01:36I wasn't watching him. I was watching Gotti in the ring.
00:01:38But what do you think the estranged relationship with Floyd means in Tracy Patterson's career at this moment?
00:01:46He says that both of them are too stubborn to take the first move to break this impasse.
00:01:53But I think that if Tracy Patterson wants to reverse the result of that first fight,
00:01:59he's going to have to be inspired rather than ignoring his father.
00:02:04His father taught him to be a boxer, puncher, and taught him very well, and he learned very well.
00:02:11He's been a terrific professional for 13 years, a two-time champion.
00:02:16But he's going to have to be more like his father in the ring.
00:02:20His father was a guy who took chances through a famous leaping left hook,
00:02:25and Patterson's going to have to do some of that against Gotti.
00:02:29We don't know yet whether he can make that leap of faith and love to change his style tonight.
00:02:36He also knows he'll have to get a faster start tonight than he got against Gotti in the first fight
00:02:40when Arturo was able to pile up points and effectively win the first eight rounds on the judges' scorecards.
00:02:46Arturo Gotti, in response to a question about that yesterday, said,
00:02:49Hey, he's had more than 60 fights, and he never had a fast start before.
00:02:52Why should we expect it to happen now?
00:02:54As they get ready for this fight, though, Roy, one thing that looms over it, of course,
00:02:58is the physical problems that Gotti has experienced.
00:03:01We've seen how badly his eyes can swell in the ring.
00:03:04Is it possible for him to go into a fight without thinking about that?
00:03:08I don't think it's possible to go into a fight not thinking about that
00:03:11because he knows that this is one of his weaknesses as an opposition.
00:03:15When people look at Gotti, the first thing they look at is that the only weakness they can find is that he swells.
00:03:20So they want to go out and try to hit him as much as they can early to hope to start the swelling.
00:03:25As soon as the swelling starts, the better the opposition's chances are of beating him.
00:03:30Arturo also comes in here off the longest layoff of his career, partially because of surgery on his left hand.
00:03:36Is it possible to forget that his hands bother him?
00:03:38No, it's not possible to forget that either, especially for a big puncher.
00:03:42All big punchers know the feeling of cracking the knuckles or hurting the hands.
00:03:46He is always going to be in fear of reinjuring his hands.
00:03:50Another thing that I found that was important to me was that Mark Roberts said that every day since the first fight,
00:03:56Tracy Patterson has been calling and egging about getting Arturo Gotti back in the ring.
00:04:02I know that hunger.
00:04:03Derek Smolgana eggs me every day about getting Kevin Kennedy back in the ring.
00:04:07So I know how it is to have a guy as determined as Tracy Harris Patterson is tonight.
00:04:12This should turn out to be a very, very interesting fight.
00:04:15Yeah, let's see what Tracy can do with all that desire.
00:04:18He goes in against the man who bested him the first time around, Arturo Gotti.
00:04:22And here's a look at the tail of the tape.
00:04:24And you can see that Patterson, at age 32, is by far the veteran of the two.
00:04:29Arturo Gotti, still one of the sport's golden boys at age 24.
00:04:33Gotti with a three-inch height advantage.
00:04:35And they are equal in weight and equal in reach.
00:04:40Yes, but Jim, we should remind you that just four months ago, Gotti was reported to be weighing in the 160s.
00:04:48He's taken off well over 30 pounds in that time.
00:04:52But he was down to weight on Monday.
00:04:54Still, that's a significant loss of weight in that period.
00:04:57This could be his last fight at 130 pounds.
00:04:59And look at what's happened since the weigh-in just yesterday.
00:05:02Gotti putting on 15 pounds to come into the ring at 145 tonight.
00:05:08And Tracy Patterson, a little bit more measured in his response, putting on 10 pounds to get into the ring tonight at 140.
00:05:18Punch stat numbers, Larry.
00:05:20Well, this is a profile of the first fight.
00:05:23You see why Gotti won. He threw more punches.
00:05:26They both landed the same percentage.
00:05:29Patterson will have to throw more punches, take more chances.
00:05:33Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:05:37Jim, very similar rules. Arturo Gotti and Tracy Harris Patterson are scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:05:42There is no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
00:05:45Only the referee can stop the fight, and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the 12th.
00:05:51Final round, Jim.
00:05:54All right, Harold. Thanks very much.
00:05:56One last look at the rules as Tracy Patterson makes his way into the ring.
00:06:02Eight appearances in championship fights.
00:06:05Five wins, two losses, and a draw.
00:06:10Many of you saw Daniel Zaragoza a few weeks ago when he beat Wayne McCullough.
00:06:15Tracy Patterson stopped Zaragoza on cuts and drew with him on another occasion.
00:06:21He is a very well-schooled fighter.
00:06:26And the record for Tracy Patterson, 62 professional fights.
00:06:3057-4-1 with 40 KOs.
00:06:35Trying to win back the 130-pound title that he lost to Gotti in December of 95.
00:06:51This activity was caused by the operation on his left hand.
00:07:15He had previously been operating on his right hand.
00:07:19I think that inactivity was a blessing in disguise, Roy, because he had had two very, very hard fights early in the year.
00:07:27He was scheduled for the rematch with Patterson back in September.
00:07:31I think he's had a chance to refuel for this one.
00:07:36I think all young fighters need this.
00:07:39Arturo Gotti's only loss came more than four years ago against a boxing cutie named King Solomon.
00:07:45Since that time, he has won 20 consecutive bouts.
00:07:49As you can see, he has 22 KOs, many of them fashioned via his lightning left hook.
00:07:59And Arturo Gotti, as you can hear here, is a crowd favorite.
00:08:04Much of the crowd chanting, Gotti, Gotti, Gotti, as the young man made his way into the ring.
00:08:09He's also hoping that that time off will help the tissue around his eyes heal,
00:08:17so that he doesn't blow up quite as quickly as he has in the past.
00:08:22But as he said to us yesterday, I'm proud of my high cheekbones.
00:08:25They may cause a problem for me, but I like them.
00:08:27Let's go up to Michael Buffer.
00:08:29Can't do anything about him.
00:08:30He might as well like them.
00:08:33Ladies and gentlemen, main events and pelts boxing promotions in association with
00:08:38your undisputed, undefeated King of Beers Budweiser
00:08:42present the featured match of the evening.
00:08:45This is the rematch.
00:08:47Twelve rounds of boxing for the IBF Junior Lightweight Championship of the World.
00:08:54Sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board,
00:08:59Boxing Commissioner Larry Hazard Sr., Chairman Jerry Gormley,
00:09:02Board Members Gary Shaw and Steve Kass.
00:09:05This bout is also sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation,
00:09:09President Robert W. Lee,
00:09:11IBF Supervisor of Ringside, Darryl Peoples.
00:09:14The three judges scoring this contest on a ten-point bus system will be
00:09:19Biba Exton, George Hill, and David McCullough.
00:09:25And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action,
00:09:28working for the 75th time in a world title bout, Rudy Battle.
00:09:34And now, ladies and gentlemen, from Bally's Park Place, Atlantic City.
00:09:42Let's get ready to rumble!
00:09:46Biba!
00:09:52In the red corner, wearing gold and red, weighing 130 pounds,
00:09:57his professional record, 57 victories, 40 by knockout,
00:10:02with only four defeats and one draw.
00:10:05Ladies and gentlemen, from Highland Park, New York,
00:10:09introducing the challenger and number one ranked contender in the world,
00:10:14the former world champion, Gracie Patterson.
00:10:26And across the ring, in the blue corner, wearing white with blue,
00:10:31weighing in also at 130 pounds,
00:10:35his professional record, 26 victories, 22 by knockout with only one defeat.
00:10:43From Jersey City, New Jersey, ladies and gentlemen,
00:10:47presenting the IBF junior lightweight champion of the world,
00:10:53Arturo Andrade.
00:11:07Okay, gentlemen, you've both received your pre-fight instructions.
00:11:10I expect a clean break at all times, but let's have a nice, clean contest.
00:11:14Do you have any questions here?
00:11:16All right, good luck to both of you. Let's touch gloves.
00:11:19We've put a lot of high expectations on Gaddy.
00:11:23The good ones live up to those expectations.
00:11:26The great ones sometimes exceed them.
00:11:30These are what I call little big men.
00:11:33They're small weight class guys, but they fight like middleweights.
00:11:41Round 13 about to begin between Tracy Patterson and Arturo Gaddy.
00:11:46They pick up where they left off in December of 1995.
00:11:49Let's see if Patterson can get the faster start
00:11:52that he knows he must have in this fight.
00:11:55Gaddy starts off going to the body with the left hook.
00:12:06And as the Gaddy contingent chants for their man,
00:12:09some of Patterson's supporters begin trying to chant
00:12:12Tracy, Tracy, Tracy in return.
00:12:18Gaddy surprised Patterson in the first fight by boxing him,
00:12:23coming in with a reputation as a warrior and as a brawler.
00:12:29He can't surprise him here, but you see he's already thrown
00:12:32three or four hard punches.
00:12:34And there's the fourth or fifth one.
00:12:37Gaddy shows you his power.
00:12:39He landed the short shot inside that wobbled Patterson
00:12:42back on his heels.
00:12:44The problem that Patterson has is that he keeps his head too still.
00:12:48He walks right down the pipe with his hands up to his head,
00:12:50but his head is always in one place.
00:12:58Another left hook lands.
00:13:01Round one so far, another showcase for Arturo Gaddy.
00:13:07Round two.
00:13:37Patterson working behind the jab and so far beating his man
00:13:40to the punch.
00:13:43Patterson doing a good job of blocking Gaddy's shots now,
00:13:47but he's been put on the defensive by the early assault
00:13:50of Arturo Gaddy.
00:13:53Patterson a little bit short trying to stick the jab.
00:14:02Now Patterson gets in close enough to land the jab
00:14:05and a short right hand that stuns Gaddy.
00:14:08Gaddy back into the corner and not throwing punches back
00:14:11and down goes Arturo.
00:14:17Rudy Battle saying low blow.
00:14:25Terrible break for Tracy Patterson.
00:14:27He had Gaddy in trouble.
00:14:29I would love to see if that was a low blow.
00:14:31I don't think that that was a low blow.
00:14:34Well, I'm sure we will.
00:14:36I didn't see it either.
00:14:37It might have been a left hand after the right.
00:14:47So after some of the early artillery from Gaddy,
00:14:50it's Tracy Patterson who scores a knockdown.
00:14:53I don't know if that's a knockdown, Jim.
00:14:55Yeah, now they're saying it's not.
00:14:57You're right.
00:14:58No knockdown scored for Patterson,
00:15:01although it certainly appeared
00:15:02that he had stopped Gaddy in his tracks.
00:15:05I promise that looked like a good body shot.
00:15:08I can't really tell.
00:15:09I wasn't really watching.
00:15:10I was watching Gaddy's eyes.
00:15:12Please show me some replay.
00:15:15Well, before we show you the replay,
00:15:17Harold Letterman, your legalese interpretation of what you saw.
00:15:21Jim, it's entirely up to the referee.
00:15:23If the guy gets knocked down by a body shot
00:15:25and the referee says it's a low blow
00:15:27and yells no knockdown, it's not a knockdown.
00:15:29It's a body shot.
00:15:30Arturo Gaddy's got up to five minutes to recover.
00:15:33Let's see what happens.
00:15:34There's a straight right hand,
00:15:35and here's where the left will come.
00:15:38Right here.
00:15:40Right here, look.
00:15:42He's landed about eight feet.
00:15:43Oh, that's a good body shot.
00:15:44Yeah, you're right.
00:15:45They took one from him.
00:15:46They took one from him.
00:15:47I knew it.
00:15:48That looked like a borderline shot.
00:15:49That was a body shot.
00:15:50It hurt Gaddy, but it didn't look like a low blow.
00:15:56That was definitely a body shot.
00:16:02You can see that, once again, Gaddy was by far
00:16:05the busier puncher in round one,
00:16:07throwing 72 punches to only 34 for Patterson.
00:16:10But Patterson landed that straight right hand
00:16:12that stunned Gaddy, and the brilliant left to the body,
00:16:15or so it appeared to Roy and me.
00:16:26Nice and free.
00:16:39And already we have enough controversy
00:16:41to have a part three of this fight.
00:16:44And you can see that Harold Letterman scored
00:16:46the first round for Arturo Gaddy,
00:16:48and, in fact, since Rudy Battle ruled the body punch
00:16:52to be a low blow, you almost have to score it.
00:16:54That way, Gaddy threw more and landed more.
00:16:59I gave the round to Patterson.
00:17:11Patterson has to move his head.
00:17:13If he doesn't move his head,
00:17:14he's going to be an easy target for Arturo Gaddy.
00:17:24What Patterson is starting to do here
00:17:26that he didn't do in the first fight
00:17:28is respond quickly after Gaddy's flurries.
00:17:32He allowed Gaddy to steal the flurries in the first fight
00:17:37and steal the rounds because of it.
00:17:40Or, I should say, win the rounds because of it.
00:17:42Right now, Patterson's doing a pretty good job
00:17:44of countering to the body when Gaddy steps in to go upstairs.
00:17:48Arturo landed a good left hook in that last exchange,
00:17:51but Patterson landed well to the body.
00:17:53That's what Rudy Battle tells Gaddy to keep his punches up.
00:17:56And that didn't look especially low either.
00:17:58That one looked a little low.
00:18:08Gaddy's starting to open up again.
00:18:10As he does, he'll leave himself available to those counters
00:18:13that scored so well for Patterson in the first round.
00:18:19Gaddy's supporters in the crowd regain their breath.
00:18:24Good jab by Patterson.
00:18:26Another good jab by Patterson.
00:18:28Tracy beginning to double up on the jab.
00:18:30The opportunity is there for him
00:18:32to throw a lot more punches than he's throwing, Roy.
00:18:34No, because he has to be very careful.
00:18:36He walked down the pipe a lot.
00:18:38That was a good body shot by Arturo Gaddy.
00:18:40Patterson has to be very careful
00:18:42not to walk into a big punch by Arturo.
00:18:45When Patterson comes in, he walks right down the pipe,
00:18:48and Arturo knows there's somebody
00:18:50When Patterson comes in, he walks right down the pipe,
00:18:52and Arturo knows there's somebody
00:18:54But Patterson's caution in the early rounds
00:18:57cost him dearly on the scorecards in that first fight.
00:19:00And the same thing may be happening here.
00:19:06Hard left hook by Arturo Gaddy.
00:19:09Biggest punch of the round.
00:19:13And as the round comes to a close, Gaddy flurries.
00:19:16Patterson doesn't.
00:19:21That's what makes Gaddy Gaddy.
00:19:24A little bit more getting off with your jab, okay?
00:19:27The only thing, and now watch.
00:19:29He's going to show you the uppercut before he throws it.
00:19:32Okay?
00:19:35He's going to show you the uppercut before he throws it.
00:19:38Pay attention. Go here, go here, go here.
00:19:41You're doing good.
00:19:43Just get a little more sticks off at him.
00:19:45A little more sticks, a little more sticks.
00:19:47Nice stiff jab.
00:19:50Right, you don't have to go to him.
00:19:53Okay? Beautiful.
00:19:55Beautiful. Don't try hard.
00:20:00Here you see Gaddy coming on at the end of the round.
00:20:04The right didn't land full. The left did.
00:20:09If the first one doesn't land, Roy,
00:20:12if you throw the second one, it may.
00:20:15One more just like that.
00:20:18Gaddy's congenitally swelling eyes
00:20:21have made it through the first two rounds relatively unscathed.
00:20:24Tracy Patterson, as you saw,
00:20:27throwing only 62 punches in the first two rounds.
00:20:30Just not busy enough so far to catch the eyes of the judges,
00:20:34particularly against a man who threw 72 punches in round one,
00:20:3782 in round two,
00:20:39and is now pounding away again to begin round three.
00:20:42I think Gaddy has got it cranked up here.
00:20:44He's throwing good body shots.
00:20:46He's landing good body shots.
00:20:48Patterson is doing much of nothing.
00:20:50He's being a target right now.
00:20:56And the main reason is because
00:20:58every time he tries to punch at Arturo,
00:21:00he gets caught because he comes straight down the middle at Arturo.
00:21:06You saw Gaddy fake with the right and fire the left hook.
00:21:15Patterson coming straight up the middle.
00:21:18Gaddy countering with a short right hand.
00:21:21There is what's hurting Patterson.
00:21:29What's that? Gaddy to the body?
00:21:31Those big body shots are hurting Patterson.
00:21:34They drain you.
00:21:37There is what's hurting Patterson.
00:21:40Round 3, very much like its two predecessors,
00:22:09Tracy Patterson not getting off a lot against Arturo Gatti,
00:22:13sometimes effective when he counters,
00:22:15but Gatti throwing more punches,
00:22:17landing more, connecting to the body and to the head.
00:22:21Gatti most definitely has control of this fight now.
00:22:23He's out in front of Tracy Patterson.
00:22:25He just has to make sure he doesn't punch himself out.
00:22:29Gatti maintaining that good power-punchers balance
00:22:33as he keeps his feet widely spaced apart,
00:22:36stepping forward all the time.
00:22:38Good double hook by Gatti.
00:22:44Right hand over the top by Patterson,
00:22:46and he doubles up on it.
00:22:48Gatti tries to come back with a right of his own.
00:22:50Oh, that's a hook to hurt Patterson.
00:22:52Left hook inside by Gatti,
00:22:54and Patterson slightly wobbled by that one.
00:22:57Another left hook lands for Arturo Gatti.
00:23:00He's making Patterson use his hair for defense
00:23:02so much that Patterson can't concentrate on punching back.
00:23:06So you had one good moment in this round for Tracy Patterson.
00:23:09There's another one on a counter left,
00:23:11but most of the round, Arturo Gatti pounding a tattoo
00:23:15to Tracy Harris' body.
00:23:17That's it.
00:23:19That's it.
00:23:21Second.
00:23:23Second.
00:23:25Second.
00:23:27Second.
00:23:29First up, you not to knock him out, Arturo.
00:23:32You have to get your guard, that's all.
00:23:34One frame rounds are for nothing.
00:23:36Keep your shoulder in hand, your stance,
00:23:38keep locked, touching.
00:23:40You're not to go to him, right?
00:23:42When you see any opening, you count it, okay?
00:23:46Okay, you understand what I said?
00:23:49Touch it all the time and stay calm.
00:23:52Touch it all the time and stay calm.
00:23:54He don't want nothing more. He's scared already.
00:23:56Fend it off.
00:24:02There you can see Gaddy working to the body
00:24:05in that quick left hook.
00:24:07Second out.
00:24:09Stay back in your corner. Stay in your corner.
00:24:11Stay back in your corner. Stay in your corner.
00:24:13He's getting advice between rounds
00:24:16from some guy who has pretty good advice
00:24:18named Purnell Whittaker
00:24:20telling him to stand there and just go forward.
00:24:23Just stand there. Don't run around.
00:24:25Just go for him.
00:24:27J.C. Harris Patterson with no way to stop the Gaddy left hook
00:24:31as round four begins with three solid Gaddy left hooks.
00:24:35So far it looks like in this rematch
00:24:39one man is a year older
00:24:41and one man is a year better.
00:24:43Well, we've already got the controversy though
00:24:46because if Patterson loses the fight
00:24:48he's likely to claim that Rudy Battle
00:24:50took away a possible knockout in round one
00:24:52when he ruled an effective body punch
00:24:55to be a low blow and gave Gaddy a break
00:24:58instead of ruling a knockdown against him.
00:25:00Well, I think he might have a case about a knockdown
00:25:03not a knockout, but it will be a case.
00:25:06But he's got to get into this fight.
00:25:08He hasn't done anything since.
00:25:10Mainly because Gaddy is making him use his hands all for defense.
00:25:14He constantly has to block Gaddy's punches
00:25:16so he can't punch and block punches at the same time.
00:25:20You've seen the one-sided punch-tat numbers
00:25:23from round to round.
00:25:25In the last round, Tracy Patterson throwing only 26 punches
00:25:28while Arturo threw 82 of them.
00:25:31That underlines Roy's point about Gaddy forcing Patterson
00:25:35to use his hands to defend.
00:25:38Hold it, hold it. Stay off the hip, all right?
00:25:41That one didn't look all that low to me either.
00:25:43I don't know what Battle is doing here.
00:25:45I don't even think he had a clear view of that punch.
00:25:49He was on the other side of the fighters.
00:25:54Right hand just misses for Gaddy, left hook lands flush.
00:25:57Right hand lands on the top of Tracy Patterson's head.
00:26:00That was a good hook inside by Patterson, but that's all he did.
00:26:03One punch.
00:26:06Another good one punch.
00:26:08He's effective countering one punch at a time.
00:26:10He needs to open up and throw more, as he's doing right now.
00:26:13Like I said, Arturo has to be careful not to punch himself out here.
00:26:19Gaddy has a still head, too.
00:26:21It's not as if he's hard to find in there, Roy.
00:26:23Right, and he shouldn't be this still
00:26:25because he's going to make himself easy to hit.
00:26:28He should do just what he's doing in round one, move his head.
00:26:31I think they think that he can basically overpower Tracy Patterson.
00:26:34He's got a lot of great punchers.
00:26:36Gaddy has a tendency sometimes to admire his work.
00:26:39Yeah, but they can't think that Tracy Patterson is out of his fight.
00:26:43This guy is a veteran.
00:26:47Short left hook inside, right hand over the top for Arturo Gaddy.
00:26:52Patterson's had his moments here in round four,
00:26:54but Gaddy continues to pile up the points and pound out the tempo.
00:26:59Hard left hook to the body.
00:27:02What you're seeing now is the younger guy
00:27:05who commits to the power punches.
00:27:08The older guy does not commit.
00:27:11He's waiting for his openings to sharpshoot,
00:27:13but Patterson won't commit.
00:27:32Right hand.
00:27:35Come on, Gaddy, be smart, buddy.
00:27:38This is Fresnel Whitaker getting ready to yell at Arturo Gaddy again.
00:27:45Head up. Head up.
00:27:48Make sure, it's getting late, make sure he stay down low.
00:27:53Stay low, shorty, go low.
00:27:56Stay low at all times.
00:27:58Come on.
00:28:04Gaddy and Whitaker have sparred together from time to time.
00:28:10So they do know each other, or Whitaker knows Gaddy anyway.
00:28:14Now Gaddy turns around and looks Whitaker in the face
00:28:16as he listens to Whitaker's advice to stay lower.
00:28:19They use the same physical trainer, Bob Waring, out of Virginia Beach.
00:28:22Gaddy, who lives in Jersey City, has been spending more time in Virginia Beach
00:28:26training with Whitaker and physical trainer Bob Waring.
00:28:31Harold, after four rounds, your score.
00:28:34Larry, 3-1, 39-37, Arturo Gaddy.
00:28:37Larry, listen to me. A low blow is anything below the belly button.
00:28:41You can't see Patterson's belly button, you can't see Gaddy's belly button.
00:28:45So therefore, the waistband is a legal shot.
00:28:47Now Rudy Battle's not giving us the waistband.
00:28:49When Patterson dropped him, he hit him on the waistband,
00:28:51and when Battle won Gaddy in the second round,
00:28:53it was for a shot on the waistband.
00:28:55The waistband should be legal.
00:28:57So we're saying that the trunks are high.
00:28:59Exactly, the trunks are high.
00:29:01Gaddy is boxing the shoes off of Patterson right now.
00:29:08Why is Whitaker telling Gaddy to stay low, Roy?
00:29:10Because he knows that Patterson is going to start to shoot counterpunches sooner or later.
00:29:14He means after he punches, make sure he stays low,
00:29:17because if Gaddy throws a big punch and he ends up high after it,
00:29:21Patterson will shoot a hard right hand down the pipe.
00:29:24If he's low, he may get under this punch.
00:29:34Arturo Gaddy taking advantage of a stationary target.
00:29:38Now he threw about seven punches there, two of them landed squarely.
00:29:43A fusillade of punches.
00:29:45None of them were after, it was the big part.
00:29:47That's the big part, that's exactly right, Roy.
00:29:49That's exactly right, Roy.
00:29:54Come on.
00:29:55All right, break, break, break.
00:29:57Now you've got a warning for the hip.
00:29:59Stay off it.
00:30:00Stay off the hip.
00:30:02You've got a warning.
00:30:06Stay off that hip.
00:30:07Stay off that hip.
00:30:19Patterson is hoping for this kid to punch himself out,
00:30:21but I don't think it will happen.
00:30:25That's depending on the other guy to lose the fight
00:30:27instead of you winning the fight, Roy.
00:30:29That doesn't seem like the way a champion should respond.
00:30:32Well, he's not the champion right now, though.
00:30:34He's not the champion.
00:30:35He's going to have to respond like one.
00:30:37Well, maybe Patterson has listened to the stories
00:30:39about how much difficulty Gaddy had making 130 pounds
00:30:42and how a lot of the people in Gaddy's camp
00:30:44believe that it's unhealthy for him to be making 130 at this point.
00:30:49He ought to be fighting at 135.
00:30:51The opportunities for income are still here.
00:30:53He holds a world title here.
00:30:55He doesn't want to go up and wait until he's offered a chance
00:30:57to fight for a title at 135,
00:31:00but he has to drain himself dry to get to 130.
00:31:04If you put on 15 pounds in about 30 hours,
00:31:08you are dry when you weigh in.
00:31:15So far, the 15-pound standing Gaddy in good stead
00:31:18as he keeps up the pace through round 5.
00:31:24He ended up good, but I think we're about five rounds down.
00:31:27You can't go ahead and give him another round.
00:31:33Now, what's happening is...
00:31:35It's getting a little heated in here.
00:31:36I'm talking to both corners.
00:31:37Keep the punches on.
00:31:39Watch the low blows.
00:31:41Tracy, you've got to stop fighting this kid now.
00:31:44His power's about gone.
00:31:46You've got to keep...
00:31:47When you're blocking that stuff, go back on it.
00:31:49Don't let him...
00:31:52Anything.
00:31:53Stay calm.
00:31:54Stay calm and take your angle.
00:31:56Five rounds, nothing.
00:31:57You understand what I said?
00:31:59You take two punches.
00:32:00You know you want to give it back.
00:32:02I don't want you to get hit.
00:32:03You have to protect yourself for every punch.
00:32:06Give it the angle.
00:32:07Don't...
00:32:08You hear?
00:32:09No, stay low.
00:32:12So far, Gaddy's eyes are just Gaddy's eyes.
00:32:17They're not puffing up,
00:32:19perhaps because he hasn't been hit there very often.
00:32:22And Patterson's eyes are watery
00:32:24because either he's getting hit in them
00:32:26or his own gloves are pounding against him
00:32:28when he's blocking shots.
00:32:30Neither is good.
00:32:31And you heard Tommy Parks telling his fighter, Tracy Patterson,
00:32:34I think you're five rounds down after five rounds.
00:32:38This is the same Tommy Parks
00:32:39who will tell you that he thinks Patterson
00:32:41should have won the first fight.
00:32:43Oh, that was a good right hand to the temple
00:32:45by Arturo Gaddy.
00:32:47In the fifth round,
00:32:48Gaddy threw 100 punches by copy box numbers
00:32:51to only 26 for Patterson.
00:32:53So it's been a one-sided display so far.
00:32:56What does Patterson have to bring
00:32:58to the second half of the fight?
00:33:04Jim, before the fight,
00:33:05I said he was going to have to be more like his father.
00:33:08He was going to have to take chances,
00:33:10and it's going to have to start soon.
00:33:24Arturo is up here to keep him off balance enough.
00:33:27Good right hand by Patterson.
00:33:30Momentarily staggered Gaddy.
00:33:33Yep, and Gaddy's still a little wobbly,
00:33:35and Patterson's trying to follow up right now.
00:33:39That right hand by Patterson
00:33:41is going to be a little bit more of a challenge.
00:33:44It's going to be a little bit more of a challenge.
00:33:47It's going to be a little bit more of a challenge.
00:33:51That right hand brought new excitement to the fight.
00:33:55I don't think it harmed Gaddy at all, though.
00:34:02There's another one.
00:34:09And another right hand.
00:34:12And suddenly, Tracy Patterson is able to land
00:34:15the right hand over the top more or less at will.
00:34:18There's another one.
00:34:20And another right and a left.
00:34:22Tracy Patterson having a big sixth round,
00:34:25and exactly how damaged is Arturo Gaddy?
00:34:28Gaddy starts to fire back.
00:34:31Tracy says, come on!
00:34:36I told you, I thought Tracy was waiting for the guy
00:34:38to punch himself out.
00:34:39Well, he knows how to counter,
00:34:41and he's getting that right hand deep into
00:34:43Arturo Gaddy's guard right now.
00:34:45All right, no wrestling, no wrestling.
00:34:47It was the right hand that turned the fight around
00:34:50for Patterson too late a year and three months ago.
00:34:54Maybe it's early enough to turn it in his favor tonight
00:34:58because it is only the sixth round.
00:35:00Arturo is still very strong, though.
00:35:04There's Tracy sitting with his head still again.
00:35:09Gaddy finally ducks and moves his head
00:35:12as Patterson fires a right hand.
00:35:15And a right hand lands for Gaddy just before the bell,
00:35:18and the two fighters have violent words with one another
00:35:21as Rudy Battle pulls him apart.
00:35:28What a round.
00:35:35The double right, the double, the double right hand.
00:35:38Yeah, let him go to his corner too, Rudy.
00:35:40The double right hand to come back with.
00:35:42Give him the ice bag or something.
00:35:44The double right hand.
00:35:45When you hear that bell, go to your corner.
00:35:47And help with him.
00:35:48You understand? You got it.
00:35:53Tracy, you got this, guy.
00:35:54Move your head all the time. Don't stand still.
00:35:56Move your head as you're out there.
00:35:58There's the right hand that turned the round
00:36:01and perhaps the fight around for Patterson.
00:36:08Patterson is being more aggressive in his own way.
00:36:13Let me say one thing.
00:36:15The good advantage of coming down so far in weight
00:36:18is that you can take those big punches
00:36:20from the smaller opponents once you weigh in.
00:36:25You're saying because he put on 15 pounds?
00:36:28That's right. His body has more weight to absorb
00:36:30the shock of the punches that smaller Patterson
00:36:33is hitting him with.
00:36:39Well, that's a positive.
00:36:41Most people see a massive weight loss
00:36:44followed by a precipitous weight gain
00:36:46as a negative as it was for James Toney
00:36:48in his fight against you, Roy.
00:36:50And Patterson is coming on strong in the 6th and 7th.
00:36:53Gotti with the still head is getting
00:36:55countered easily now by Tracy Patterson.
00:36:58For James Toney in the fight against me,
00:36:59the weight was just an excuse.
00:37:01If you do it the right way,
00:37:02that is supposed to work in your advantage.
00:37:04Roberto Duran used to come from 200 pounds
00:37:06to fight at 160.
00:37:08I used to come from 180 to fight at 160.
00:37:10I used to always be bigger than my opponent
00:37:12and I could take more shots from them
00:37:14than they could absorb from me.
00:37:16All right, so you're telling me
00:37:17that you think Tracy can keep landing
00:37:19those right-hand shots,
00:37:20but he's not going to knock Gotti out with them.
00:37:22Not that he's not going to knock him out,
00:37:24but not right away.
00:37:25It'll have to wear him down over a period of time.
00:37:31That's why he's been able to absorb so many already.
00:37:41Well, certainly Patterson landed
00:37:43a series of right hands in round 6
00:37:45that might have put some of his previous opponents away.
00:37:48Would have put a lot of them away.
00:37:50Yeah, but guys, he came into boxing as a 122-pounder.
00:37:54He's just not as strong as Gotti,
00:37:56no matter what the weight.
00:37:58Rudy Battle taking a point away yet?
00:38:00No.
00:38:01Did not deduct a point
00:38:02as Gotti protested the low blow call.
00:38:11He's actually a stronger puncher than Gotti, I think.
00:38:19Now Gotti starts to land power shots again
00:38:23as he reverses the momentum
00:38:25in the second half of round 7.
00:38:27Yeah, Patterson is looking to the referee too much for help.
00:38:31Gotti's gone back to the left hook
00:38:33that serves him so well.
00:38:35Whenever Arturo gets in trouble,
00:38:39you can watch the left hook load up.
00:38:44Like that.
00:39:02He's turning into a dogfight now.
00:39:04Good rally in the latter stages of round 7
00:39:07by Arturo Gotti.
00:39:09Patterson had begun to get the momentum.
00:39:18And Patterson sticks his tongue out at Gotti
00:39:21at the end of the round.
00:39:24Is that still an insult?
00:39:38Nothing.
00:39:39That low.
00:39:40Too low.
00:39:41Combination.
00:39:44That thing here.
00:39:45Rudy Battle is not going to help you.
00:39:48Throw something over that low.
00:39:52Stop hitting this guy, Tracy.
00:39:54You gotta throw a lot of punches now.
00:39:56You gotta move your head and go punch.
00:39:58You'll beat this guy.
00:40:00Early in the round, Patterson had the momentum.
00:40:04Some good body shots.
00:40:06But that left hand drove him off the ropes.
00:40:09And later it was Gotti responding.
00:40:12And may have stolen the round by finishing faster.
00:40:16Because Gotti is throwing in combinations
00:40:18whereas Tracy is just trying to land the one big shot.
00:40:24Between rounds 7 and 8, moments ago,
00:40:29Gotti was leaning his head all the way over the ropes
00:40:31out of the ring to listen to Bernal Whitaker.
00:40:34Whitaker was saying, hit the body, keep the chin down.
00:40:37But my question, Roy Jones,
00:40:39he's got a trainer right in front of him, Hector Roca,
00:40:41who's trying to talk to him.
00:40:42Now he's leaning his head out over the ropes
00:40:44to listen to Whitaker.
00:40:45Is Whitaker a help or a distraction?
00:40:47He's a help.
00:40:48Most definitely a help.
00:40:49Because if nothing else, he's a confidence builder.
00:40:52He's probably also saying the right things to Gotti.
00:40:55Hit the body and keep the chin down
00:40:57are two very good pieces of advice.
00:40:59That's right.
00:41:00And most of the time, you'd much rather listen to a guy
00:41:02who does the same thing that you do
00:41:04than a guy who hasn't done it in several years.
00:41:07The way Derek Gaynor listens to you
00:41:09when you yell at him from ringside.
00:41:10Pretty much so.
00:41:15I don't know.
00:41:16All that sounds a little cockeyed to me,
00:41:17I gotta tell you guys.
00:41:21One point.
00:41:22Here it goes.
00:41:23One point.
00:41:24One point deduction against Gotti.
00:41:26Small break for Patterson.
00:41:29You all right, Trace?
00:41:31Huh?
00:41:32Patterson's right eye seems to be closing a little bit.
00:41:35Oh, good hook by Gotti.
00:41:38Keep him up.
00:41:40And now Patterson should be going out here
00:41:42to make this a two-point round.
00:41:44He should be right on top of Gotti and going for it.
00:41:51Nice and clean.
00:41:59Stay up there.
00:42:01All right, break your arm.
00:42:02Let him go. Step up.
00:42:03Let him go.
00:42:05Keep him up.
00:42:08Another thing, Larry, is that good layoff
00:42:10did show to help Arturo's eyes.
00:42:12His eyes have been caught with some good shots tonight,
00:42:15but you've not seen any signs of it yet.
00:42:17Right.
00:42:18They're certainly not swelling the way they have
00:42:20in the last couple of fights.
00:42:21Nice and clean. Stay up there.
00:42:22Which suggests that that long layoff
00:42:23has helped him in that regard.
00:42:26You also get the impression here
00:42:27that Arturo is determined to win this round
00:42:29to nullify the point that was taken away
00:42:31by Rudy Battle for low blows.
00:42:33Get off his head.
00:42:34He should win this fight with no problem,
00:42:36pretty much, because Patterson is just constantly
00:42:39trying to knock him out with one shot.
00:42:41He should be able to just outbox Patterson
00:42:43the rest of the way he is,
00:42:44take it easy and not worry about nothing.
00:42:46He just has to keep moving his head.
00:42:49Oh, good hook by Arturo.
00:42:55Straight right hand landed for Tracy Patterson
00:42:57as he found a way to counter Arturo's left hook.
00:43:05Nice and clean. Nice and clean.
00:43:12Gatty's showing great energy tonight
00:43:14and he's got a lot of energy.
00:43:16Gatty's showing great energy down the stretch in round 8.
00:43:19Heavy right hand there.
00:43:21Another heavy right hand over Tracy Patterson's left.
00:43:26Right hand counter for Patterson,
00:43:28but Gatty landing a combination as the bell sounds.
00:43:41Tracy, give me some water in there.
00:43:43Tracy, if you'll fight this guy,
00:43:45you'll beat him, his power's gone.
00:43:47Tracy, all you gotta do, Tracy,
00:43:49is, hey, listen, put some ice, put some ice,
00:43:51put that in as well on that eye.
00:43:53Give me a, give me a...
00:44:00Yeah, give me the, uh, give me something here.
00:44:06Listen, Tracy, I don't know if you want this fight or not,
00:44:08but you can't win it like this.
00:44:09You gotta stop him.
00:44:10You gotta stop him.
00:44:11How you gonna stop him, Tracy?
00:44:13And to be aggressive and move him back.
00:44:16Let's see if that blow was low.
00:44:18Yeah, it was low on the hip.
00:44:20Didn't do any damage, but it was low.
00:44:27Let's go. Stay back.
00:44:30Round 9. Nice and clean.
00:44:32These are some of the most amazing punch stat numbers
00:44:35that CompuBox has ever produced
00:44:37in the sense that Arturo Gatty
00:44:39has thrown almost three times as many punches in the fight
00:44:42as Tracy Patterson.
00:44:43Because he's boxing Patterson.
00:44:45He's throwing combinations.
00:44:46Patterson is just trying to get this fight over
00:44:48with one big punch.
00:44:49Patterson is landing 59% of the punches he throws,
00:44:53almost 60%, but seemingly losing the fight
00:44:57while landing 60% of the punches he throws.
00:45:00Quickly, Harold, how do you have it through eight rounds?
00:45:02Larry, 77-74, 5-2-1 even, Arturo Gatty.
00:45:081, 2, 3, 4...
00:45:12Patterson thinks it was a slip.
00:45:14It's gonna be ruled a knockdown.
00:45:16The left hook by Gatty, a glancing blow,
00:45:19but the timing of the droppage to the canvas suggests
00:45:22it should have been ruled a knockdown, and it was.
00:45:25Clearly a slip.
00:45:26I thought it was a slip also, Roy.
00:45:28Clearly a slip.
00:45:30But battle saw the punch fly
00:45:32and saw Tracy go down and called it a knockdown.
00:45:37So the point that Gatty lost for low blows in the last round,
00:45:41he may get back for the knockdown here,
00:45:44and you heard both Roy and Larry suggest
00:45:46they don't think it was a knockdown.
00:45:48I know it wasn't a knockdown, without a doubt.
00:45:50I don't even have to see that on the replay.
00:45:52I know that wasn't a knockdown.
00:45:55Hard right hand by Tracy Patterson.
00:46:02Gatty using his feet effectively,
00:46:05Gatty using his feet effectively.
00:46:18This is just a faster outboxing approach.
00:46:21Gatty has shown that he's like the third hitter in the lineup
00:46:26who can play big ball or little ball.
00:46:28He can go for the fence or he can go for the single.
00:46:35Watch your head. Watch your head.
00:46:42Well, I still think he gets hit too much,
00:46:44but it hasn't harmed him tonight
00:46:46because Patterson just hasn't been busy enough
00:46:49to make that an advantage for him in the fight.
00:46:51Jim, the fewer punches you throw,
00:46:53you should land a higher percentage.
00:46:55Let him go. Let him go.
00:46:56I don't think it's a big deal if you land a high percentage.
00:46:59If you throw 10 punches and land 6, that's 60%,
00:47:02and the other guy throws 30 and lands 10, that's only 33%,
00:47:06but he's landed 4 more punches.
00:47:08That's what's happening here. You're right.
00:47:14Gatty is the bolder fighter.
00:47:22Which is why Tommy Parks asked Tracy Patterson
00:47:24after the last round,
00:47:26I don't know if you want this fight,
00:47:28but you can't win it this way.
00:47:30Probably Tracy's about to hear more of the same.
00:47:39Don't bounce. Don't bounce.
00:47:42Angle. These three rounds, I want angle, Arturo.
00:47:46And keep it in the middle of the ring.
00:47:48Round 10. Round 12.
00:47:50Arturo, you hear what I say? I don't want nothing on this.
00:47:52Only time, yes. Only time, yes.
00:47:55Okay? You have it blank.
00:47:59Do not control that whole bunch of white folks.
00:48:01Don't throw 6, 7, 8 punches.
00:48:08No, he fell off balance throwing the punch.
00:48:10You know good and well that that is clearly a slip.
00:48:13He didn't get hit with a clean punch, didn't get hit with that punch,
00:48:15fell off balance right there as he threw his own punch.
00:48:17That is not a knockdown.
00:48:22He lost his balance as he was throwing the punch.
00:48:24This was clearly seen.
00:48:28I have to agree with you, Roy.
00:48:30Looked like a slip from here, but it was ruled a knockdown.
00:48:33Now, Tracy Patterson is losing this fight regardless.
00:48:36I don't think the referees' too bad calls are effective,
00:48:39but there is enough controversy to cause for a third fight.
00:48:42What would you think, Larry?
00:48:44No, if he gets licked this way, Roy, it's twice as enough.
00:48:49You've got to earn it.
00:48:51Now, he is getting beat pretty bad here.
00:48:53All right, break it down.
00:48:55Let him go.
00:48:56Step back.
00:48:57Stop punching.
00:48:58Stop punching.
00:48:59He's not going to think so.
00:49:00Stop punching.
00:49:02Looks like Gaddy has something in his left eye he's been squinting out of it.
00:49:08Looks like Gaddy has something in his left eye he's been squinting out of it.
00:49:27Gaddy firing four jabs in a row while Patterson stands and looks at him.
00:49:32Now, here we go again.
00:49:34Jab, hook, right cross.
00:49:36Patterson not throwing back.
00:49:38It was a Whitaker move.
00:49:39He might have got that squaring with Burnell.
00:49:42Probably did.
00:49:47Harold Letterman has changed his mind about the last round,
00:49:50now makes it a 10-8 round instead of a 10-9 round.
00:49:54So, that adds to the margin on Harold Letterman's scorecard
00:49:57for Arturo Gaddy over Tracy Patterson.
00:50:03Crowd chanting for Gaddy.
00:50:07Patterson finally throws a punch.
00:50:09A right-hand counter.
00:50:11A one-punch guy never should be the combination puncher.
00:50:14I don't know why Patterson is just throwing one punch trying to knock this guy out.
00:50:18The guy is far too big and far too strong to knock out with one punch.
00:50:21Somebody should have told Tracy that Gaddy is the one who is regarded as the puncher in the fight.
00:50:26Roy, I'll tell you why.
00:50:27Why he's doing that.
00:50:29Because he doesn't want to take the chance of throwing too many punches
00:50:33and leaving himself open and getting hit.
00:50:35That's why a guy doesn't throw punches.
00:50:38I know this, but if you want to win the fight, that's your only chance.
00:50:42Which is why Tommy Parks asked Tracy Patterson if he really wanted to win the fight.
00:50:51Arturo is starting to move his head more now than he was in the early part of the fight.
00:50:57He's boxing better than he did in the early part of the fight.
00:51:00He's up on his toes.
00:51:02He's using the jab more effectively.
00:51:09Not the only thing he isn't doing is moving his head.
00:51:13His right eye does have a little bit of a nick up under it.
00:51:16But Patterson's eye is almost closed.
00:51:22The result of all those left hooks by Arturo Gaddy.
00:51:28Two!
00:51:30Big round for Gaddy.
00:51:33Only two more left.
00:51:38I can't see him.
00:51:39Well, you can't see him.
00:51:40I can't see him.
00:51:45That won't make you can't see him.
00:51:47You know what I'm saying?
00:51:48It's got to be your eyes that make you can't see him.
00:51:50What you got to do...
00:51:53You're out there anyway.
00:51:54You're out there anyway, right?
00:51:56So you may go for some punches.
00:51:58Hit him.
00:51:59You got to stop him.
00:52:01You got to stop him.
00:52:02I'm telling you.
00:52:03When you get in there and don't grab him with your left hand.
00:52:05Don't put your left hand on him.
00:52:07Just keep punching.
00:52:08Listen.
00:52:09He only has to knock you out to win you.
00:52:11Right?
00:52:12So the fight is easy.
00:52:14No, do yours like yours for more.
00:52:16Nothing in your face.
00:52:17Why do you want to get in my trouble?
00:52:19Second round!
00:52:21Go!
00:52:22Stay back.
00:52:23Stay back.
00:52:24It's your fight, yells Pernell Whitaker.
00:52:26Everybody in the building seems to know it.
00:52:29Can Patterson do anything about it?
00:52:32He was complaining in his corner that he couldn't see.
00:52:35He couldn't see him and he can't breathe.
00:52:37So he has two big problems.
00:52:43Gatti has boxed a beautiful fight.
00:52:45If Patterson is not careful here, he'll get knocked out in these last two rounds.
00:52:50Well, and a cumulative punishment knockout for Gatti at this point
00:52:53would probably be justice.
00:52:56They've fought 22 rounds up to this point
00:52:58and Arturo has won the vast majority of them,
00:53:01at least in our eyes.
00:53:03Here we go.
00:53:22He's basically beating Patterson with one hand, a jab.
00:53:25All right, here I am, let him go, let him go.
00:53:27Gatti and Hector Roca telling Arturo Gatti between rounds,
00:53:30He's got to knock you out, so now the fight is easy.
00:53:34Ronell Whittaker saying to Arturo Gatti,
00:53:36don't lose this fight. It's yours.
00:53:40He's fighting as smart of a fight
00:53:41as you can fight at this point.
00:53:47And probably the best news of the night for Arturo Gatti
00:53:49is that neither eye has swollen shut.
00:53:53So for the moment, he seems to be beyond that crisis
00:53:56in his career.
00:53:59And he hasn't had any problem with his hand either, Jim,
00:54:02using eight-ounce gloves for the first time
00:54:04since he had his operation.
00:54:06Certainly, he's still throwing the left
00:54:07with a lot of resolution.
00:54:12A lot of times, an injured right hand will make you do that.
00:54:15All right, break. Let him go. No wrestling. No wrestling.
00:54:17As an amateur, I learned to knock people out
00:54:18with the left hook because of my right hand
00:54:20staying injured so much.
00:54:23And what an advantage it is for you now.
00:54:26Gatti's hand was put back together by Dr. Charles Malone
00:54:29at Beth Israel Hospital in New York,
00:54:31a man who is well-known in boxing circles.
00:54:34There's a left and a right by Patterson.
00:54:36All right, break. Let him go. No wrestling. No wrestling.
00:54:38Gatti ties him up.
00:54:41Dr. Malone doing the kind of surgery for Gatti
00:54:43that he's done for many other fighters.
00:54:45Oh, good left hook by Gatti.
00:54:48That'll be one thank you from Gatti after tonight
00:54:51if things go as they appear they're going to here.
00:54:55He's giving the boxer a boxing lesson, Roy.
00:54:58Yes, he is.
00:54:59But I always thought he was the boxer
00:55:00and that Patterson was the puncher,
00:55:02mainly because Patterson doesn't move his head much
00:55:05and he doesn't throw a numerous amount of punches.
00:55:07We haven't seen but about two or three punches
00:55:09from Patterson all night.
00:55:10I never saw Patterson as a boxer.
00:55:12It's almost as if Patterson has conceded defeat here.
00:55:16That's why I say I think he may be knocked out
00:55:19within the next couple of rounds if he's not careful.
00:55:21He's ready to go now.
00:55:23Time!
00:55:31Not exciting.
00:55:33Hey, three minutes.
00:55:35I want you to finish like this, okay?
00:55:39Listen, listen, listen to me.
00:55:42I want you to finish like this, okay?
00:55:45Listen, listen, listen to me, champ.
00:55:49Last round we touch gloves in the center.
00:55:51Come on, come on, okay.
00:55:53Hey, low, low.
00:55:56You understand?
00:55:57Last round we touch gloves in the center.
00:55:58Okay, Arturo.
00:56:00No opening for nothing.
00:56:02See that, man?
00:56:03Breathe, young boy.
00:56:06You should have said that to me, Tracy.
00:56:07If you don't get him this round, Tracy,
00:56:10you'll be able to breathe as long as you want,
00:56:12so just go out and get him, yeah?
00:56:15I want the same fight.
00:56:17Keep your chin down, okay?
00:56:19Chin down, chin down, and just get out of the ring.
00:56:23Ladies and gentlemen, this is the 12th and final round
00:56:27of the round of applause for champion and challenger.
00:56:31Touch gloves, nice ring last round.
00:56:36Last piece of advice from Brunel Whittaker to Arturo Gatti,
00:56:40keep that chin down.
00:56:43Gatti with a masterful boxing performance
00:56:45over the course of the past three rounds
00:56:47has now thrown, by CompuBox numbers,
00:56:50more than 600 more punches in the fight
00:56:53than Tracy Patterson has launched.
00:56:59And if Gatti can box this effectively
00:57:01against future opponents, Roy Jones,
00:57:04this stands him in good stead
00:57:06for a long and successful championship reign
00:57:09either here or up at 135 pounds.
00:57:13More than likely at 135 pounds.
00:57:16I think he wants to fight Azuma Nelson
00:57:19if Nelson should beat Genera Hernandez,
00:57:22which is by no means a sure thing.
00:57:25In fact, I like Hernandez.
00:57:27Otherwise, he'll move up to the lightweight division.
00:57:34More combinations from Gatti.
00:57:36Patterson, unable to follow his corners,
00:57:39dictates to go out and try to end the fight.
00:57:42Gets in one right hand, but again, Arturo Gatti
00:57:45throwing bunches of punches
00:57:47to the one at a time for Tracy Patterson.
00:57:55No way you can beat a guy like Arturo
00:57:57when he's throwing so many combinations
00:57:59and you're only throwing one punch.
00:58:01Your only chance is to get lucky and knock him out.
00:58:06And you're so weak from absorbing so many of his punches
00:58:09until that doesn't work.
00:58:12And the operative term there is luck,
00:58:14because at this point, a knockout for Patterson
00:58:16would have to come from luck.
00:58:18He just hasn't done enough damage.
00:58:25If you put a fedora on this kid Gatti,
00:58:28he would look like somebody out of a 30s movie.
00:58:31Wouldn't he?
00:58:34Double-breasted suit and a gray fedora.
00:58:37He ought to be nicknamed Body and Soul.
00:58:39He's that kind of a fighter.
00:58:41Yes, he is.
00:58:49All right, break out, let him go, step back.
00:58:51Step back, step back, step back.
00:58:54Tracy Patterson has been an outstanding fighter
00:58:57for a number of years.
00:58:59He just came up against somebody too young,
00:59:02too strong, and too good.
00:59:04Gatti with a little display for the crowd
00:59:07just to finish things up on a high note.
00:59:17So many times in a rematch,
00:59:20all you get is a more extreme version
00:59:23of what happened the first time around.
00:59:25If Arturo Gatti won a close fight
00:59:28in Madison Square Garden in December of 95,
00:59:31he would appear to have won a lopsided victory tonight.
00:59:34He put an exclamation point on that first fight tonight.
00:59:37A big exclamation point.
00:59:51Trainer Hector Roca celebrating there
00:59:54along with manager Pat Lynch.
00:59:56Patterson threw some good punches.
00:59:59Patterson threw 16 total punches in the 12th round
01:00:03and took another 3-minute beating from Arturo Gatti.
01:00:19Harold Lederman, your final scorecard in the fight.
01:00:22Jim, this one was too easy.
01:00:24117-109, a big 8-point win for Arturo Gatti.
01:00:28What can you say? I was trying to watch him.
01:00:31You know, there's no rhythm.
01:00:33I was looking for jab, jab, right, hook, hook, right,
01:00:35but he changes the rhythm all the time.
01:00:37He just keeps coming, keeps punching,
01:00:39won this fight from here to tomorrow.
01:00:41By the way, round 8, when Battle took away a point,
01:00:43it becomes 9-9, so Tracy gets an even round.
01:00:45But I thought Tracy only won the first round, the 6th round.
01:00:48That was it. Everything else to Arturo Gatti.
01:00:51And you gave Gatti a 10-8 round in the following round.
01:00:54Well, you know, Jim, if you go down on the end of a punch,
01:00:57he still doesn't see the slip. He sees the punch being thrown.
01:00:59He's got to call it a knockdown.
01:01:01If Battle calls it a knockdown, you have to go along with him.
01:01:03That's what I said. It was the timing of the thing.
01:01:05He saw the left hook. He saw the guy go down.
01:01:07He thought it was a knockdown.
01:01:13Immaterial.
01:01:17Certainly it's good for all of us that the little controversies
01:01:20that could have been so pivotal in a close fight...
01:01:27Michael Buffer with the final judges' decision.
01:01:31We go to the scorecards.
01:01:35Biba Exton scores about 118-108.
01:01:38David McCullough scores at 117-109.
01:01:42And George Hill scores at 116-110
01:01:46for the winner by unanimous decision and still
01:01:49junior lightweight champion of the world,
01:01:54Arturo Gatti.
01:02:0563rd fight of Tracy Patterson's career.
01:02:09Only his 5th loss.
01:02:11Maybe the most lopsided one ever.
01:02:16And a huge victory for Arturo Gatti,
01:02:18who solidifies his status as the main man
01:02:22at 130 pounds in the world of boxing.
01:02:26Let's go to Larry Merchant in the ring with the winner.
01:02:29Thank you, Jim. Congratulations, Arturo.
01:02:33Why did you win this fight so much bigger than the first one?
01:02:37Well, I was using my head a little bit more.
01:02:40In the first round, I went a little bit too fast
01:02:43like I usually do, and then I recovered.
01:02:45When I went in the corner, they told me,
01:02:47box, keep your hands up, and don't move,
01:02:49don't jump a lot for no reason.
01:02:51And I stayed in the middle with Tracy,
01:02:53and it was much easier for me.
01:02:55Did you feel that his body punch that you went down from
01:02:58and that the referee called a low blow
01:03:00was in fact a low blow?
01:03:02No, I would say it was on the belt.
01:03:04I did get my win cut a little bit,
01:03:06but it was under the belt.
01:03:08Well, then if you're saying that it was on the belt,
01:03:11then the referee's call might have helped you there, right?
01:03:14Well, I don't know. Either way, I won every round of the fight.
01:03:17So if it helped me or not,
01:03:19God bless.
01:03:21Did the long layoff
01:03:23because of the hand operation help you
01:03:25because your eyes seem to have come out in good shape
01:03:28and you didn't seem to have any problems with your hand?
01:03:30Well, I want to thank God for that.
01:03:32Everything happens for a reason, and my face seems...
01:03:34It feels all right.
01:03:36Much better than the last fight.
01:03:38Hopefully. I have no beard, so I can't see.
01:03:40But it does feel much better.
01:03:42All right. It was hard for you to make the weight
01:03:44this time at 130 pounds.
01:03:46Will you fight again at junior lightweight?
01:03:48If I can get a fight with Azuma Nelson.
01:03:50And if I could, I would fight one more time at 130
01:03:52and then move up as a lightweight.
01:03:54Because that felt good tonight. It felt great.
01:03:56Would you fight Angel Manfredi,
01:03:58who won so impressively in the first fight?
01:04:00Tonight? Nah.
01:04:02Not at all.
01:04:04I don't need to fight somebody like him.
01:04:06I'd rather fight Azuma Nelson.
01:04:08That will take me somewhere in my boxing career.
01:04:10Why wouldn't you fight him?
01:04:12I mean, you can't fight Azuma Nelsons of the world
01:04:14in every fight, can you?
01:04:17If we can't get the fight that we want,
01:04:19I'm just gonna have to move up at 135.
01:04:21Thank you so much.
01:04:23And thanks for another great fight.
01:04:25Thank you very much.
01:04:27Back to you, Jim.
01:04:29All right. Thanks very much, Larry Merchant.
01:04:31We'll talk in a moment with Roy Jones
01:04:33about Gatti's future prospects.
01:04:35Meanwhile, you look at these amazingly
01:04:37lopsided punch stat numbers.
01:04:39Arturo Gatti throwing nearly three times
01:04:41as many punches as Tracy Patterson.
01:04:43Landing more than twice as many punches.
01:04:45I still don't think it's great for Gatti
01:04:47that Patterson lands 55% of his punches
01:04:49in the fight.
01:04:51But a performance by Gatti that shows
01:04:53both his boxing skill,
01:04:55a little bit of his punching power.
01:04:57Now, Azuma Nelson is one of the craftiest
01:04:59fighters in the game.
01:05:01Is Arturo Gatti ready for somebody like
01:05:03Azuma Nelson at this point?
01:05:05I don't know.
01:05:07I would think that it would be very smart
01:05:09for him to go in and go after Azuma.
01:05:11Azuma has to be getting close to the end of his career.
01:05:13Every time, ever so impressively,
01:05:15and impresses me even more.
01:05:17I think a guy like Arturo is doing the right thing
01:05:19by saying, look, I don't have time to mess with
01:05:21the young guys who are not really
01:05:23at my caliber yet.
01:05:25Let me go fight somebody who is beyond me
01:05:27to help me get another notch in my belt going upward.
01:05:29Fighting Angel Manfredi does not help
01:05:31Arturo whatsoever because
01:05:33what reason is there to think that Angel Manfredi
01:05:35can really beat Arturo Gatti?
01:05:37Particularly when it's abundantly clear
01:05:39that Gatti needs to get up to 135
01:05:41pretty soon to keep going at his highest
01:05:43maximum level.
01:05:45Exactly. So why take the risk of fighting somebody like Angel Manfredi?
01:05:47There are other people for Manfredi to fight.
01:05:49Alright. What about you, March 21,
01:05:51against Montel Griffin?
01:05:53You in training already?
01:05:55Oh my goodness, am I.
01:05:57You should see some of the stuff that happens in the gym now.
01:05:59I don't even want to explain it.
01:06:01I'll see you March 21. I've got to go.
01:06:03Alright. We'll look forward to seeing you then.
01:06:05We'll also see you March 8 in Albuquerque,
01:06:07New Mexico for the Tapia Romero
01:06:09and that should be some sizzling action.
01:06:11That should be another thunderous night.
01:06:13You know what though? I still think Angel Manfredi
01:06:15and my buddy Smoke will be a good fight.
01:06:17Oh, Derek Gaynor. Oh yeah.
01:06:19Roy Jones, always willing to act as promoter
01:06:21where his buddies are involved. Thanks very much, Roy.
01:06:23Well, Larry, another evening
01:06:25on Boxing After Dark ends with probably
01:06:27the most lopsided decision in the brief
01:06:29history of Boxing After Dark. You heard
01:06:31Roy Jones say that he thinks it would be
01:06:33fascinating to see Arturo Gatti
01:06:35go against Azuma Nelson. You think there's a chance
01:06:37we would see that bout? Well, Azuma
01:06:39will have his hands full with Gennaro Hernandez.
01:06:41Be that as it may,
01:06:43I think what we saw tonight
01:06:45is what I said earlier. One fighter
01:06:47got a year older, the older fighter
01:06:49and the other, younger fighter, just got a year
01:06:51better. What's so
01:06:53compelling about Arturo Gatti
01:06:55is that he's one of those athletes
01:06:57who, when he gets to the top of the
01:06:59mountain, he not only wants to stay there,
01:07:01he wants to climb to a higher
01:07:03mountain. And
01:07:06we're seeing that while it happens.
01:07:08It'll be fun to watch from here on out as
01:07:10Arturo Gatti continues to appear here on
01:07:12HBO, either on Boxing After Dark
01:07:14or on our main series, World Championship
01:07:16Boxing. We'll have a final word
01:07:18on our two Boxing After Dark
01:07:20bouts in a moment. Let's look ahead to some upcoming
01:07:22programming here on HBO.
01:07:24Comedy's taking over
01:07:26primetime when HBO hits the slopes
01:07:28of Aspen, Colorado for the U.S.
01:07:30Comedy Arts Festival, beginning Thursday

01:07:44At 11, it's more of
01:07:46The Best of the Fest, with festival
01:07:48host Sinbad taking you around town.
01:07:50Then at 11.30, Dennis
01:07:52Miller Live with guest Martin Short.
01:07:54And Saturday, a new Best

01:08:06and director Rob Reiner.
01:08:08The festival goes out with a bang on Sunday
01:08:10night with a wrap-up show at 10.
01:08:12It's all in the U.S. Comedy Arts
01:08:14Festival. It's the four coolest days
01:08:16of winter.
01:08:18Beginning this Thursday for four nights on
01:08:20HBO.
01:08:26Can't wait. Two weeks from tonight, HBO's
01:08:28Boxing After Dark returns with two
01:08:30New Mexico natives as
01:08:32headliners. First, Johnny Tapia
01:08:34fights Mexican Jorge Barrera. Then the
01:08:36relentless Danny Romero takes on
01:08:38South African Jaji Sibale. This could
01:08:40ultimately lead to an
01:08:42intra-city war between Romero and
01:08:44Tapia, who grew up in the same neighborhood
01:08:46and have known for more than a decade
01:08:48that they may someday fight each other.
01:08:50It could take place later in 1997
01:08:52if they both win on March 8.
01:08:54Later in March, Roy Jones matches
01:08:56light heavyweight titles with another
01:08:58champion, Montel Griffin.
01:09:00Don't count Griffin out. He's the only
01:09:02man besides Jones to have defeated James
01:09:04Tony, who beat Mike McCallum on ESPN
01:09:06tonight. Also on the card, former
01:09:08U.S. Olympian David Reed makes his pro
01:09:10debut in his first fight since having
01:09:12won the gold medal in Atlanta.
01:09:14And don't miss Real Sports with Bryant
01:09:16Gumbel for you boxing fans. March's
01:09:18installment has a look at the growing phenomenon of
01:09:20women's boxing. Is it legit, competitive,
01:09:22or just a sideshow? Don't miss Spike
01:09:24Lee's requiem for Kurt Flood,
01:09:26a football pioneer who was the first to battle
01:09:28for free agency. A quick look back
01:09:30at what happened in the ring tonight. Angel
01:09:32Manfredi, 22 years old, son of a steel
01:09:34worker from Gary, Indiana, won a
01:09:36unanimous decision over the vastly more
01:09:38experienced Wilson Rodriguez of Spain.
01:09:40Manfredi, dominating the fight throughout
01:09:42with his straight right hand, produced
01:09:44cuts over both of Wilson Rodriguez's
01:09:46eyes en route to the easy decision
01:09:48victory. And an easy decision
01:09:50for Arturo Gatti as he bests
01:09:52Tracy Patterson for the second time in
01:09:54a year and puts a punctuation
01:09:56mark on his victory over Patterson
01:09:58in December of 95 that brought him a
01:10:00junior lightweight title. Tonight,
01:10:02he dominated all 12 rounds
01:10:04en route to another unanimous decision
01:10:06over Patterson. That brings
01:10:08Arturo Gatti to 27-1.
01:10:10Coming up immediately following our show,
01:10:12please stay tuned for Night of the Archer
01:10:14right here on HBO.
