03:42Welcome to my channel, I'm your host, Steve Rogers, and today I'm going to show you how
04:00to build a ship like this.
04:27We are live from the convention center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where tonight HBO
04:32Sports presents a welterweight boxing doubleheader.
04:35First, hard-hitting title holder Felix Trinidad faces the tough, impressive challenger from
04:40the Empire State, Larry Vaughn.
04:43Then Pernell Whitaker tries for another shutout, this time going against veteran Jake Rodriguez.
04:49Both fights are scheduled for 12 rounds.
04:52This bastion of boxing on the boardwalk becomes, for the moment, the capital of the welterweight
04:57division as two star fighters move toward a possible confrontation and a unification
05:03of the welterweight championship, possibly as early as 1996.
05:10And hello again, everybody.
05:11I'm Jim Lampley.
05:12We welcome all of you boxing fans to this evening with the welterweights, an evening
05:16which we hope can lead to bigger and better business down the road if both of the overwhelming
05:22favorites, Trinidad and Whitaker, are able to win tonight.
05:25Thanks for joining.
05:26With me, as always, HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
05:28Larry, in recent months, a lot of boxing experts have elevated Roy Jones Jr. to a notch above
05:34Pernell Whitaker in the ongoing battle for supremacy as the best pound-for-pound fighter
05:39in the world.
05:40That's because Jones has been scoring spectacular knockouts, and Whitaker has been going the
05:44distance in a fashion that some find less impressive than what he was able to do before.
05:49What can he do to regain his top-notch status, and can he get it done tonight?
05:55Well, not unless he scores a spectacular knockout, which isn't his style.
05:59And perhaps if he goes down into the audience and finds Roy Jones and cups him around a
06:03little bit, that might help.
06:06But actually, as unlikely as it seems, he can vault back over Jones in 1996 for this
06:13simple reason.
06:14The welterweight divisions from 140 to 147 pounds are the most talent-rich in all of
06:21boxing.
06:22And while we've got some major opponents out there, and Roy Jones in the middleweight divisions
06:26doesn't, as yet, of all of those talented fighters in the welterweight division, the
06:32most talented, it is assumed, and the only one who has expressed a sincere desire to
06:39get in the ring with Pernell Whitaker, is here tonight.
06:44That's the man we have been touting for you, Felix Trinidad.
06:48I've never seen him in person, Jim, and I am anxiously looking forward to checking him
06:53out.
06:54Indeed, for us, that's a lot of the story of tonight, our first chance to see Felix
06:57Trinidad in person and to show him to you.
07:00And of course, HBO boxing expert George Foreman with us, as always.
07:04The one dark cloud on the Trinidad horizon, George, is what was mentioned in the feature
07:08piece that opened the show, his propensity for getting knocked down.
07:12Five knockdowns in four different fights, something that his trainers and handlers ought
07:17to be worried about?
07:18Well, the old saying is, when the going gets tough, the tough gets up and get going.
07:23Trinidad, in my mind, has gotten up five times, and that's what, that makes it, it gives him
07:27a plus in my mind, because with a young fighter, you never know what's going to happen.
07:31He's gotten up and won each time.
07:33These knockdowns have come in the early rounds.
07:35He's seen as something of a slow starter, and as George points out, each time he's gotten
07:40up and come on to win those fights by knockout.
07:43So we get ready for Felix Trinidad against Larry Barnes.
07:47And here's the tail of the tape that shows you various of Trinidad's perceived advantages
07:52in the fight.
07:53He's eight years younger.
07:54He's five inches taller.
07:55He weighed in right at the weight limit of 147, and some believe that he's having trouble
07:59making that limit.
08:01But we shall see as time goes on, and he's got a six-inch reach advantage over Larry
08:06Barnes.
08:07Larry Merchant?
08:08I've heard he's had to strain to make that weight for at least a year.
08:13It could hurt him down the future with a more formidable opponent.
08:17We don't know about tonight.
08:19Here's a look at their activity.
08:21You can see Trinidad is much more active and much more accurate.
08:27And here are some Trinidad numbers to show you how active he is in different rounds.
08:31As you can see, he is least active in the early rounds, and those are the rounds when
08:36he has suffered many of those flash knockdowns that he has arisen from.
08:44And the rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Lederman.
08:47The Larry Barnes-Felix Trinidad fight will be 12 rounds.
08:51The usual rules will be seen on our screen.
08:53The unusual rule tonight in our first fight concerns cuts caused by accidental headbutts.
08:58We go to the scorecards and a headbutt after six rounds have been completed.
09:01Before that, it's a technical draw.
09:03Jim.
09:04All right.
09:05Thanks very much, Harold.
09:06We're preparing now to enter the ring, and first it will be the veteran, Larry Barnes.
09:12Even though he has a record of 39 and 1, he enters here for his very first world title
09:23fight.
09:24Barnes is a terrific kid with an unusual background.
09:30I've never heard of a fighter before whose main job is as a school aide in which he works
09:39with a swimming team at Mount Vernon High School in New York City.
09:43He himself was a diver in high school.
09:51Gotta love a guy who uses entry music that even the folks in my generation can remember
09:56and identify with.
09:57How about that, George?
09:58I love this song.
09:59Not me.
10:00Well, some of us do.
10:03And you saw the record for Barnes.
10:0539 wins, 1 loss.
10:07That loss was to the then-past-40-years-old Saul Mamby, and he's only had 15 knockouts.
10:14He is, by his own admission, not a power puncher.
10:18Harold Letterman, who was at that fight, has told us that Barnes definitely won it.
10:25So Harold Letterman thinks it's 40 and 0.
10:27The rest of us will just have to accept 39 and 1.
10:33And now Barnes waits in the ring as there's a momentary delay in Felix Trinidad's exit
10:38from his dressing room.
10:43The most amount of money this young man has ever made in a fight was fifteen
10:48thousand dollars. Tonight his purse is close to a quarter of a million dollars.
10:54So many of the fighters in this sport are sweet, sensitive people.
10:57Larry Barnes is as nice a man as you could ever want to meet.
11:03The question is whether this fight is diving off the cliffs of Acapulco for him.
11:14We saw the numbers on Trinidad. 14 rounds in the last 14 months.
11:19He's been getting quick knockouts, and he's been having long layoffs between fights.
11:26Which is one of the reasons he is trying to break his contract with Don King,
11:33which is the only way that a fight with Whitaker could happen.
11:38He is in court in that effort right now.
11:42The most money he has ever made is $300,000.
11:45He'll make a million tonight.
11:50Let me go! Let me go!
11:53Let me go, Larry! Let me go!
12:19Let me go! Let me go!
12:22Let me go! Let me go!
12:25Let me go! Let me go!
12:28Trinidad with a relatively small number of amateur fights turned pro very early,
12:33rather than to try to go the Olympic route, which might have been available to him
12:38coming from Puerto Rico.
12:41But he got started at a tender age, and as we've mentioned, at age 22
12:46gets ready for his 27th professional fight.
12:55Has some impressive knockouts on his dossier.
12:58There you see his father, who trains him,
13:02says that they have avoided the usual problems that exist between fathers and sons
13:08in the ring by being flexible, which is to say,
13:12giving Trinidad, the young Trinidad, some distance in space
13:17and not being all over him.
13:19And a look at the record, 26-0 and 0, 22 knockouts for Felix Trinidad.
13:24Let's go up to the ring to Michael Buffer for the fight introductions.
13:29Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome
13:32to Atlantic City's Convention Hall, where tonight,
13:35by way of Bally's Park Place Casino Hotel on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey,
13:41main events monitor in association with
13:44your undisputed, undefeated King of Beers, Budweiser.
13:49This Bud's for you present a double rumble in the welterweight division.
13:55These bouts are sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board,
13:59boxing commissioner Larry Hazard Sr.
14:01The first title bout is also sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation,
14:05IBF president Robert W. Lee, supervisor ringside Benedetto Montella.
14:10The three judges scoring this bout on a 10-point must system will be
14:15Samuel Conde, Julio Mancini, and Shafik Rashada.
14:21And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action, referee Benji Estevez.
14:28And now, ladies and gentlemen, for the first of two times
14:31from Atlantic City, New Jersey, let's get ready to rumble!
14:41Twelve rounds of boxing for the IBF welterweight championship of the world.
14:47Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
14:50wearing black and weighing in at 146 pounds.
14:55His professional record, an outstanding one of 39-1, 15 KOs.
15:01Ladies and gentlemen, the pride and joy of Mount Vernon, New York,
15:05the number one right IBF challenger in the world,
15:10Larry Nofe Barnes!
15:19And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner,
15:23wearing in at 147 pounds.
15:27His professional record, 26-0, 22 KOs.

16:59Let's go!
17:00Let's go!
17:01You have to follow the rules and the orders
17:03that you're given during the fight.
17:04Obey my commands during the match.
17:06Protect yourself at all times.
17:10Good luck.
17:11Good luck.
17:12Touch up.
17:14It's great to want to be great, Jim.
17:17And Trinidad clearly does want to be great.
17:20Let's see how great he is tonight.
17:22I got you.
17:29Trinidad's camp followers, after the weigh-in yesterday,
17:33expressed surprise at how Larry Barnes looked.
17:37They complimented his build and said,
17:39this guy's stronger than we thought he was.
17:41And he lands a left hook in the early going
17:44as Trinidad backs up and gets ready
17:46to try to establish the jab.
17:48So Barnes coming out aggressively.
17:51He said he would put his head on Trinidad's chest
17:53and keep it there.
17:54And it looks like he is as good as his word.
17:58He's already been hit with a nice left hook
18:00on the side of the head.
18:01Believe me, it wasn't a slip, those hooks.
18:14Barnes is going to try to stay inside against Trinidad.
18:16He must get inside of that punching range.
18:21How can he do it, George?
18:24You got to concentrate less on landing a punch as you are.
18:27You got to concentrate on getting closer to the opponent.
18:29Forget about the punch and just get your head,
18:31touch his shoulder, then start punching.
18:34What about the big man, little man thing here
18:36with Barnes trying to punch up at the much taller Trinidad
18:40and Trinidad coming down with punches?
18:42Does that give Felix a big advantage?
18:44No doubt about it.
18:45Being smaller sometimes can work to your advantage.
18:48But you got to stay down, only come up to punch.
18:52Give him up. Give him up, Larry.
18:58Trinidad with an uppercut.
18:59If Barnes stays in this position,
19:02uppercuts are going to work for Felix.
19:05One thing you don't want is Felix Trinidad
19:07to get his jab in rhythm.
19:09Then Barnes is going to have a hard night.
19:11Try to keep moving your head so he never get a good rhythm
19:14with his left jab.
19:15Barnes should be concentrating on it.
19:17Barnes not close enough right now to execute his fight plan.
19:20If he's going to have a chance to do what he thought he could
19:22do, he's got to get his head in the ring.
19:25If he's going to have a chance to do what he thought he could
19:27do, he must stay well inside of Trinidad's jab.
19:37That's difficult against a fighter who not only punches
19:39well, but as you can see, moves well, too.
19:47Trinidad getting more and more comfortable now against Barnes.
19:50Seemed to be a little thrown off at first by the bobbing
19:53of Trinidad's head.
19:56The hyper-aggression of Barnes trying to get inside.
20:09Wild haymaker lefts.
20:10One of them landed a glancing blow.
20:16Good, sharp, short left hook by Trinidad.
20:24Barnes is going to have to keep his right hand up as he comes
20:27inside or Trinidad will land that left hook at will.
20:39Now you're going to see something, folks,
20:41you've never seen before in a major fight,
20:45and that is Larry Barnes as the man in the nickel mask.
20:50You've heard of inswells,
20:53which are made of a copper compound to reduce swelling.
20:58They have a mask that they put on his entire face
21:02to reduce swelling.
21:03What do you think of this, George?
21:05I think so, but I don't like the idea
21:07of the nose being covered at any time.
21:09You just opened the nose hole,
21:11you think it's a great idea, huh?
21:12Yeah, you just got to exempt the nose from that covering up
21:15because you can't have anything pressing on that nose.
21:18Now, in this corner, our interpreter is Hector Garcia.
21:23Take it easy.
21:25Just be careful and take it easy.
21:27If you hit at the body,
21:29if he comes in forward, just hit the body.
21:32Go ahead, Popo.
21:36Trinidad threw 85 punches in round number one.
21:39That's an extremely busy opening round for Trinidad,
21:43who in his recent fights has been starting
21:45much slower than that.
21:47Now, Greek, Greek.
21:54This looks like a bush going up against a tree, George.
21:58You know, it's strange that Trinidad, he's small-looking,
22:01but he was able to deliver a good left hook to the body
22:03just like his daddy told him to.
22:09Good, sharp punches by Trinidad.
22:13Barnes still not getting close enough.
22:16He's not getting close enough to get inside of Trinidad's jab
22:20and his power punches.
22:27Barnes is right at home lunging in with those left hooks,
22:30wild shots.
22:31That's what he do.
22:36He'll do that all night.
22:37But in most of his wins against lesser fighters, George,
22:40he's been able to out-hustle and out-work them.
22:42It's gonna be awfully tough to do against a guy
22:44as skilled as Felix Trinidad.
22:46And Felix Trinidad has got to spend some time
22:49on building up his points, too.
22:51He's throwing a lot of power shots,
22:52but he's got to make sure that he's willing
22:55and ready to go the distance.
22:57Barnes wrestling his way in to throw a left hook to the body.
23:01Trinidad steps back and starts to try to pick his shots again.
23:14A young fighter like Trinidad probably missing more big shots
23:18in these early rounds than he ever has before, George.
23:21Is it you think it bothers him?
23:23At the same time, that's what I said earlier.
23:25He should try to build up some points.
23:26At the same time, be ahead on the score
23:28in case you don't get that knockout.
23:30He's missing some shots he need not
23:33even be throwing at this point.
23:36Round 2, a little bit more cautious round for Trinidad,
23:39more like what we expected as he kind of eyeballs
23:43Larry Barnes's hyper-aggressive, hyper-bobbing style.
23:48Trinidad missing with the right hand.
23:50Might have done some damage after landing that short left.
24:02For the first time, Felix Trinidad
24:04has been able to bob and weave underneath a shot.
24:09And from where Barnes is working,
24:11he's gonna have a hard enough time seeing the target,
24:13much less hitting it.
24:15Yeah.
24:18He looks like somebody on the beach looking for coins.
24:22His eyes almost straight down on the canvas much of the time.
24:27Trinidad missed one right hand, landed one.
24:29Barnes landed a wild left hook.
24:33Time.
24:41Breathe in.
24:43Breathe in.
24:45Breathe in.
24:47Just be careful, just take it easy.
24:49We're going to the third round.
24:52Now, I want you to listen to me.
24:57Move that jab.
24:59When you move that right hand, he's trying to move his left.
25:03When you move your right, he's moving his left.
25:08When he comes in, hit him in his body.
25:11Just hit that body.
25:13Weave hook, right hand, and back downstairs.
25:15Just don't give him some side moves, man, okay?
25:17Just because they're covering up.
25:18You're doing okay.
25:19He's missing a lot of punches.
25:21Okay?
25:22Okay.
25:23Stay close, stay close.
25:26Okay?
25:27Just concentrate, relax, man.
25:28Because that mask is chilled,
25:32his corner people say it helps to revive him very quickly.
25:37Yeah, they also believe it brings down his heart rate
25:40by cooling the body.
25:45Giving him more stamina over the long course of the fight.
25:49Barnes threw only 30 punches in round number two.
25:52As he comes out for the third round,
25:54he's standing a little bit straighter up
25:56and in a better position to try to throw,
25:59but that might make more openings for Trinidad.
26:08Wild right hand missed by Barnes,
26:10and Trinidad was able to land
26:11a couple of those punches in return.
26:26Short left hook inside to the body by Trinidad.
26:32Trinidad's corner has been telling him
26:33to throw to the body,
26:34and he's the only one being active in the body.
26:37You would think that Barnes wanting to slow him down
26:39would have landed more shots to the body by now,
26:41but he hasn't.
26:56Yeah, particularly if you think a guy
26:58has had trouble making weight
27:00and might be a little dehydrated,
27:01that's all the more reason to go to the body early
27:04and try to take his legs away.
27:06He would think so, but if you can see from the camera,
27:08Trinidad's body looks awful dry.
27:11When a fighter's having a rough time making the weight,
27:13he'll be wet.
27:14You'll see the thighs be a little more puffy.
27:16Thighs aren't that puffy, so he hasn't had
27:17that much of a hard time getting that body weight down.
27:21Left hook was partially blocked there.
27:27Trinidad is getting some opportunities here
27:29in round three to set his feet
27:31and throw those power punches.
27:42Talk about Trinidad trying to go to Barnes' body, George.
27:45Larry's so much smaller.
27:475-inch height advantage for Trinidad.
27:49How hard is it to get down to the level
27:51you've got to get to to throw those body punches?
27:53A good right hand by Barnes, by the way,
27:55but at the same time, Trinidad is able to stoop
27:57and bend his knees and get the same height
27:59every now and then.
28:00That's how he's able to do it,
28:01which is very courageous for a tall fighter.
28:05As you saw then, he actually weaves that left jab.
28:11Hard left hook.
28:13Best punch of this round by Trinidad.
28:18Barnes has been in against some guys who can crack,
28:22notably Glenwood Brown back pretty close to the time
28:25when Glenwood was good, and Barnes weathered that storm
28:28and won the fight by decision.
28:44And in the dressing room,
28:46awaiting his turn in the ring,
28:48Freddell Whitaker.
28:51Acknowledged king of the well-to-weight division,
28:53generally regarded as one of the two best
28:55pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
28:57Some would still choose him as the best.
29:01His opponent tonight, Jake the Snake Rodriguez,
29:03and Grinnell with his beloved mirror,
29:06visualizing the fight as it will happen.
29:11That's a lean. That's a lean, son.
29:13Okay, Larry, concentrate.
29:15Just focus. Concentrate.
29:16I cut the ring off. Relax.
29:18Yeah, yeah. No, you don't want to go.
29:19You're doing everything wrong. You got to punch more.
29:21You got to punch more. Great punch.
29:22You want to do any LBs?
29:23Okay, turn around. Get fancy, too, okay?
29:25Don't hold down the stance. You're doing great, baby.
29:27Punch round.
29:30Felix Trinidad connecting at 57%.
29:33According to punch stat numbers so far,
29:35that's the same percentage at which he connected
29:38against a strong fighter named Oba Carr
29:40en route to a knockout of Carr.
29:43But, you know, he's like a race car
29:46that's usually in fifth gear or a higher gear,
29:51who is doing more backing up, more in reverse,
29:54than he's probably used to,
29:55and so he's not really settled down
29:57to land his best power shots very often.
30:01There you see him trying to stand his ground
30:04a little bit more instead of just moving.
30:07Well, what you try to do as a boxer,
30:08you get that tight circle.
30:10You want to move, but at the same time,
30:12you don't want to get from in the middle of that ring.
30:14Trinidad are doing an excellent job this round.
30:16He's moving, but in a circular fashion.
30:20And trying to get the song going with his jab.
30:22You tap, tap, tap, tap.
30:25That's why you train to music,
30:26so you can get a rhythm to what you're doing.
30:29As Barnes settles down
30:31and doesn't lunge in quite so much,
30:33he becomes a more consistent target for Trinidad
30:36and gives him a better chance
30:37to get the rhythm going with the jab.
30:39And here it comes.
30:46He's got a rhythm and a little rhythm going right now,
30:49Trinidad has.
30:52That's what Barnes shouldn't allow him to do.
30:55Well, Barnes is going to have to go back to lunging wildly.
30:58The more unorthodox Barnes can be,
31:00the better shot he'll have at throwing Trinidad.
31:03And Barnes is wobbling.
31:07And Trinidad comes in to try to finish.
31:09This is a legitimate knockout puncher at 147 pounds.
31:14I thought he was playing a little impulsive.
31:16He was stung but not badly hurt
31:18and looking for a big opening.
31:19And now he may be hurt.
31:34What a game kid he is, Larry Barnes.
31:37An overachiever against one of the most talented fighters
31:41in the ring.
31:42And what about the precision of Trinidad's finishing effort,
31:44George? Is he doing the right thing?
31:46He's been told to really respect this guy.
31:48He's in with the number one contender, so you heard him.
31:51Start back from the bottom and go back up again.
31:54Go to the body.
31:55You get too wild, this guy's still strong.
31:58He's been a number one contender Barnes has for a long time.
32:07A very patient clinical effort by Felix Trinidad,
32:12and he is racking up the damage against Larry Barnes.
32:16And a body shot to put him down.
32:18Three, four, five, six...
32:23That was some body shot.
32:24...seven, eight.
32:27No, Larry, no, Larry, no.
32:29No, Larry.
32:32As advertised, that was some finish,
32:36took his time, waited for the opportunity,
32:39and did a terrific job of closing the deal.
32:46And you see there why Felix Trinidad is being compared
32:51as a two-fisted punger
32:52to some of the greatest fighters who have ever fought.
33:03Well, George, he didn't look like a 22-year-old
33:06as he carried out that execution.
33:07I thought for certain he would go wild
33:09and start lunging in for that finish
33:10once he heard him the first time.
33:12I was shocked to see him be so patient.
33:14Sometimes that's what you need,
33:15your dad in your corner sometimes,
33:17someone you really respect to teach you properly,
33:19take your time.
33:21Only a father can do that properly.
33:22Sometimes trainers are better at it,
33:24but a father is the best.
33:25He showed patience, confidence, precision,
33:29and technique all in the same package.
33:32Not like a 22-year-old or at all.
33:35So Felix Trinidad makes the most of his HBO debut,
33:39and let's take a look back at the first big punch
33:42that hurt Barnes early in the round.
33:44That short left hook had been a weapon all the way through.
33:47Well, it all became about because he was able
33:50to slip that left jab.
33:51Now he's taking his time, sticks his head back,
33:54not to get wild on the corner, jab,
33:56and he's got it.
33:57He's got it.
33:58He's got it.
33:59He's got it.
34:00He's got it.
34:01He's got it.
34:02He's got it.
34:03Jab, back to the body a little bit,
34:05uppercuts, but watch what you're doing.
34:08Moves him to better position.
34:10Even when he's wobbling, he doesn't get wild.
34:12Gets left foot right back, sent again,
34:15double right hand, left hook.
34:17Watch what you're doing most of anything.
34:18Get back.
34:20You don't want to be caught by a lucky shot.
34:21And here comes the end,
34:23and watch for the sensational body shot right there.
34:26That did it.
34:30When you get knocked down truly with a body shot
34:33after receiving those kind of head shots,
34:35it's seldom that you get up.
34:37Well, it took 3-plus rounds for Larry Barnes
34:40to settle down and adopt the posture
34:42of a conventional fighter, but once he did,
34:45he was too easy a target for Felix Trinidad.
34:48Trinidad has an excellent left jab,
34:51and that jab start hitting you
34:52with an occasional hook in there.
34:54Hardly any way to protect yourself.
34:55Well, let's go up to Michael Buffer now
34:57for the official particulars on this knockout.
35:00Ladies and gentlemen,
35:01referee Benji Estevez calls a halt to the bout,
35:05stopping at the count of eight.
35:07The official time, 2 minutes, 54 seconds
35:12of round number four.
35:13The winner, and still the undefeated
35:17IBF welterweight champion of the world,
35:22Felix Hito Trinidad!
35:27Oh!
35:44All right, let's go into the ring.
35:46Congratulations on a spectacular finish.
35:51Okay, Felix, tell us what was going through your mind
35:55when you saw Larry Barnes,
35:57because he was such a difficult, unorthodox opponent
36:01to get measured.
36:15Larry Barnes is a very uncomfortable fighter.
36:17He's very low.
36:20And were you feeling uncomfortable
36:23fighting him in turn?
36:25No, bueno, sà se me hizo un poquito incómodo
36:26en esos primeros asaltos,
36:28pero poco a poco fui adaptándome al ritmo de pelea.
36:31It was very uncomfortable in the first few rounds,
36:33but I got used to it after a couple of rounds.
36:36In the last round, it seemed you were a little bit more
36:38settled down and a little bit more accurate
36:41in your punches.
36:43Was that because you finally got his rhythm
36:46and knew how to deal with him?
36:48En los últimos asaltos, estabas un poco más confortable
36:50y te sentÃas mejor.
36:52¿Qué te dio hacer eso?
36:54Bueno, mi gran condición y poco a poco
36:59yo siempre me adapto poco a poco, round por round.
37:01His conditioning was superb,
37:03and round by round, he just got better.
37:05All right, we're going to tell him,
37:06we're going to try to show the knockdown
37:08and ask him to describe it to us,
37:11particularly that vicious body shot
37:14that really ended the fight.
37:17We'll get it up here in a minute, fellas.
37:20Cuando se cayó.
37:21So, tell us about the body shot
37:23that really ended the fight.
37:38I just know that I can hit with my left and with my right
37:41just as hard, and Larry Barnes can hold a punch.
37:44Asimila mucho golpe.
37:45He can hold a punch.
37:46All right, talk to us about Pernell Whitaker.
37:48There are many talented welterweights out there,
37:50but you're the only one that seems to truly want
37:52to fight him. Why?
38:09Yeah, he's interested, and so it's...
38:13Tito's interested, and in 1996, that fight can go on.
38:16Thank you very much. Congratulations once again.
38:19He wants to say a lot to somebody.
38:20A mÃ, yo quiero dar las gracias a mi licenciado Fred Levin,
38:24que está junto conmigo, y dar las gracias a él
38:26por estar ayudándonos grandemente.
38:28He wants to thank Levin and for helping him so much.
38:31All right, a commercial for Fred Levin,
38:33the lawyer who is trying to get him out of his
38:35present contract with Don King.
38:37Back to ringside, fellas.
38:39And the Fred Levin Association is what puts
38:41Roy Jones Jr. in Trinidad's camp and vice versa.
38:44They're good buddies.
38:45Heck, if he went up 21 pounds,
38:47he might be a credible opponent for Roy Jones,
38:49but first things first, as a welterweight,
38:52how can he get any better than that?
38:54He's very good. He's got the right movement.
38:56He doesn't want to sit and slug all the time,
38:57knowing that he's a puncher,
38:59so he's got wisdom along with that puncher power.
39:01Let's take a look at some punch stat numbers,
39:03which will reflect Felix Trinidad's total domination
39:06of Larry Barnes.
39:07Barnes throwing only 164 punches into the fourth round,
39:10and he knew he would have to be busier
39:12and do better than that against Felix Trinidad,
39:15who landed at 60% with an effective mixture
39:18of jabs and power punches.
39:20Let's go up to Larry and find out
39:21what Barnes thought of Trinidad.
39:23Okay, Larry.
39:24Yeah, Larry.
39:25What can you do with a guy who not only punches that hard,
39:28but also moves so well?
39:30Larry, you know, I can't take nothing away from the guy.
39:32The guy's great.
39:33I thought the shot was borderline,
39:34but I ain't gonna make no excuses.
39:36The guy is that pound-for-pound one of the best,
39:38and I knew that I was coming into this fight.
39:40I ain't got no excuses.
39:41I want to thank HBO.
39:42I want to thank Lou Dubu for giving me the shot.
39:44How hard did he punch?
39:46Because it seemed finally in that fourth round
39:49that he started to get down on his feet
39:51and start to throw with more leverage.
39:54Well, Larry, you know, I thought he was gonna fight me,
39:56but he moved. He moved like a snake.
39:58You know, I tried to be the mongoose and, you know,
40:00cut him down, but he wouldn't go for it.
40:02And I think if I'd have survived the round,
40:04I think the fight would have went the distance.
40:06But what are you gonna do? That's boxing.
40:08Thank you, Larry.
40:09Thank you very much, Larry.
40:10You're a boxing too. Jim?
40:1241st fight for Larry Barnes.
40:14First time he's ever been knocked out.
40:16First time he's ever been in with an opponent
40:18like Felix Trinidad.
40:19So that's the first of our two main events.
40:22Much more to come now as we take a look at
40:24one of the other leading lights of this talent-packed
40:27welterweight division.
40:28Man many record as one of the two best fighters
40:31in the world.
40:34If you think of a boxing ring as a blank canvas,
40:38then Purnell Whitaker is boxing's Picasso,
40:41boxing's Van Gogh.
40:42Each time he fights, Whitaker is out to paint
40:45the perfect picture.
40:48Notice the foundation.
40:49Everything begins with hand speed.
40:52Purnell Whitaker's greatest works are painted
40:54with the quickest hands in the business.
