00:00:00So the crowd here at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, eagerly awaiting Cotto versus Mayorga.
00:00:24Yes, Ricardo Mayorga. Now just moments away from the opening bell. Antonio, what's going through his mind as he closes in on this high-stakes showdown with a pot of gold? Could be Manny Pacquiao.
00:00:37Well, you know, he really feels that he's catching Cotto at the right time. You know, Cotto really hasn't been in a tough fight since his last fight with Pacquiao.
00:00:46And Mayorga feels if he presses him early, he may get him out of his elements tonight.
00:00:51And Al, how about Miguel Cotto? I know you've called countless championship fights over the years.
00:01:00What do you think is happening inside his head right now, closing in on this big fight?
00:01:04You know, he is calm, introspective, and people have tried desperately to figure out what Miguel Cotto's thinking before fights.
00:01:12But I'll tell you one thing he might well be thinking.
00:01:15He knows that a possible fight with Antonio Margarito, which is the fight he's pointing toward, is in the balance.
00:01:22And a loss here would be devastating for the last third of his career.
00:01:28So we're closing in as Cotto gets last-minute instructions from the acclaimed Emanuel Stewart in his second fight with Cotto.
00:01:39And here's Mayorga, slowly making his way.
00:01:42From backstage here at the MGM Grand, very dramatic.
00:01:51You know, this crowd is sizable, and it is very fired up for this event.
00:02:00This guy tends to make emotions run high.
00:02:03Yes, he does, and he's one of those unique fighters that really is fueled by the dislike from an opponent.
00:02:10You know, he gets angry, and that makes him a better fighter.
00:02:14He's not as good as Cotto technically, but, man, he's going to come out firing.
00:02:18Oh, yeah.
00:02:19Well, from Oscar de la Hoya and Shane Bosley to Fernando Vargas and Felix Trinidad,
00:02:24Ricardo Mayorga has insulted just about every opponent he's ever faced.
00:02:29And for the most part, Cotto hasn't gone for the bait.
00:02:32Mayorga promises a fourth-round knockout, and you just know that a seething Cotto can't wait to answer with his fists.
00:02:49I'll do him like this.
00:02:52Seven years ago, he could have been considered a good fighter and a good opponent for me.
00:02:58He's taking a lot of punches, and he's not the same fighter anymore.
00:03:01Today, Cotto doesn't have the heart to train, and that's why it's an easy fight for me.
00:03:10He likes to get all the attention.
00:03:12He likes to try to take his opponents out of my hands.
00:03:17It's a pretty weird fighter, you know?
00:03:19He throws punches from everywhere, and sometimes he surprises you.
00:03:26Sometimes he's a dick, but, you know, I just try to be Miguel, you know?
00:03:32Miguel, as always.
00:03:34He wants to step on my pride.
00:03:36When the fight comes, you hit him with anger, with hate.
00:03:43I feel pretty good, and I feel strong.
00:03:49I want to knock him out in four rounds.
00:03:50I don't want to be a clown wasting my time.
00:03:53I'm Miguel Cotto.
00:03:54I'm going to be the winner of this fight.
00:03:57Well, whether Mayorga fills reporters' notebooks to hype the fighter to pump himself up or to psych
00:04:09out his opponent, he sure talks a good game.
00:04:12But now, the talk is over.
00:04:14It's time to fight.
00:04:15Boxing's wild man, Ricardo Mayorga, could be his last stand.
00:04:23This is all about getting a fight with Pacquiao.
00:04:26That's where you make your reputation.
00:04:28That's where the money is.
00:04:30And there are rumors of Mayorga having financial problems.
00:04:34He's trying very hard to make himself more marketable, to fight the world's best.
00:04:40And Antonio Tarver, he may want to make this a firefight for as long as he can.
00:04:45Yeah, and like I mentioned earlier, this guy is fueled by the anger, the dislike, the hatred.
00:04:51This is what he really focuses on before a fight.
00:04:55And I don't know how long you can keep that up.
00:04:57Maybe three, four rounds before the fight settles in.
00:05:00And then he has to rely on his ability.
00:05:02So that's what we're looking for, Steve.
00:05:04These early rounds are very important.
00:05:07He's getting fist bumps from some of the fans.
00:05:10They're ringside there.
00:05:12He's macho as usual.
00:05:15He's doing a lot of bravado.
00:05:16And as mentioned, he's almost a 10-to-1 underdog.
00:05:20But could this turn out to be a closer fight than people actually believe?
00:05:26So Ricardo Mayorga on the edge of getting into the ring.
00:05:36There with his trainer, Luis Leon, he's got boxing lifer Al Bonanni in his corner as well.
00:05:50Some great characters led by this man in the blue and white.
00:05:53El Matador thrives on this.
00:05:58That's for sure.
00:06:02Now your keys to victory for Ricardo Mayorga.
00:06:07Antonio said it well.
00:06:08Early is when he's got to be aggressive.
00:06:10He's got to let it all go.
00:06:12Try to catch Koto early.
00:06:13The other fighters are hurt early in the fight.
00:06:16Make it rough.
00:06:17Even if there's a point or two deducted, what's the difference?
00:06:20Go for everything.
00:06:21And he's got to straighten out his right hand.
00:06:23He said, I've been working on it.
00:06:25We'll see in the fight whether that really happens.
00:06:27A wide right will not land against Koto.
00:06:29He's had only one fight since the knockout loss to Shane Mosley in 2008.
00:06:36And he just turned 38.
00:06:38But his body looks cut.
00:06:39That's not always a true barometer.
00:06:41But it shows he's dead serious about winning this fight.
00:06:47Ricardo Mayorga in the ring and ready to take on the champion, Miguel Koto.
00:06:52And there he is.
00:06:53Coming in to his 18th world title fight.
00:07:20The pride of Puerto Rico.
00:07:21A champion in three weight divisions.
00:07:22The huge favorite to win.
00:07:24But if Miguel Koto loses this fight, as harsh as this sounds, he could become irrelevant.
00:07:30What would happen to rematches with Antonio Margarito or Manny Pacquiao?
00:07:36Antonio, tonight the stakes are higher for this man, Miguel Koto.
00:07:39Yeah, they're very high.
00:07:40You know, he's been in some tough fights with the Margarito fight as well as the Pacquiao fight.
00:07:46And in Mayorga feels that they're catching Koto at the right time.
00:07:51Tonight, if this fight is a very tough fight for Koto, it's safe to say that he may not be up for the task.
00:07:58That remains to be seen.
00:07:59Emmanuel Stewart said, how can you plan for this fight with Mayorga being so unpredictable?
00:08:06Is there really uncertainty there, or is it a smokescreen?
00:08:15Al, your keys to victory for Miguel Koto.
00:08:17Well, for Miguel Koto, there's a reason he's a 10-to-1 favorite.
00:08:21He's got great technique.
00:08:23He needs to step in with the jab.
00:08:25Get inside those wide punches of Mayorga.
00:08:28And then once he's in there, the vaunted left hook of Koto, he should grip them as left hooks to the body and head.
00:08:34And his right hand has improved a lot in recent fights under Manny Stewart and even before that.
00:08:39That punch works against Mayorga because he can be hit with straight punches.
00:08:43So much passion going into this fight for the fighters and the fans.
00:08:49Can't wait to see how this one comes out.
00:08:52Al, let's check the numbers for Koto and Mayorga as we go to the tail of the tape.
00:08:56Mayorga wants a fight that is not fought on the inside.
00:08:59And his height and reach advantage are things he wants to use in this fight.
00:09:03Even though Koto will box from time to time, I don't think Koto wants to be on the end of all those punches.
00:09:09And the notable rules for tonight's WBA championship.
00:09:12The unified rules as we know them.
00:09:14No standing eight, no three knockdown rule.
00:09:16Only the ref can stop the fight.
00:09:18Hunter can't be saved by the bell in any round.
00:09:20If there's a clash of heads that causes this fight to be stopped before four rounds detected a draw.
00:09:25After that, they would go to the scorecards.
00:09:27So we are set for Miguel Koto versus Ricardo Mayorga for the WBA Super Welderweight Championship.

00:12:17Here is the fearless former two-division champion of the world.

00:12:53His record, 35 wins, two losses, with 28 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:13:01Tonight, in his 18th world title appearance, here is the four-time world champion in three weight divisions.
00:13:09Please welcome the defending WBA super welterweight champion of the world.
00:13:16Introducing, Miguel Cotto!
00:13:28Once again, a referee in charge.
00:13:30Now to give instructions, Robert Byrd.
00:13:33Gentlemen, you better listen to what I've got to say, okay?
00:13:47You've had your instructions in the dressing room.
00:13:49The only thing I'm going to remind you of now is when I say stop.
00:13:52What that means is stop whatever you're doing and give me a clean break.
00:13:55Protect yourself at all times.
00:13:57Obey my commands at all times.
00:13:58Right here on the belt is going to be good.
00:14:00Anything on the belt here is going to be good.
00:14:02Both of you gentlemen are champions.
00:14:04Fight like them.
00:14:06Back to your corners.
00:14:06Go!
00:14:13A crazy wild fight expected.
00:14:15Tremendous anticipation here in the arena.
00:14:18Will Cotto be able to do what he wants or will he be forced out of his rhythm?
00:14:23Can Mayorga back up his bravado with the predicted early knockout?
00:14:27And will he charge out with a home run swing?
00:14:30The big overhand right.
00:14:31The opening minutes could be crucial.
00:14:34Two guys who can't wait to get at each other.
00:14:36Robert Byrd brings them together.
00:14:38This crowd and a fever pitch were underway for Cotto and Mayorga.
00:14:44Remember what Mayorga told us at the fighter meeting?
00:14:47I want to cut him.
00:14:48I want to knock him down.
00:14:49Or I want to knock him out in round one.
00:14:51We'll see.
00:14:53That's a tall order against Miguel Cotto.
00:14:54Right on top of each other here right at the outset.
00:15:01No question.
00:15:01Cotto, the more polished of the two, has the ability to box, quick instructions, and cautioning.
00:15:08That must be a world record.
00:15:09We're 20 seconds in.
00:15:10Robert Byrd has issued a warning to Mayorga already.
00:15:13Cotto wants to make Mayorga miss, but plan A to get inside.
00:15:20Mayorga's wide shots with short, precise punches.
00:15:23Whoa.
00:15:24Some great action here at the start.
00:15:27Mayorga with the wide right, and he gets countered by a left hook by Cotto.
00:15:31Good exchange there, huh?
00:15:32If Mayorga's punches is straighter, as you pointed out, what a difference that could make.
00:15:37But that's a big if.
00:15:38Right hand chopping to the head by Mayorga.
00:15:41And we know Mayorga can take a punch.
00:15:43It's going to take a lot because you really stop him, hurt him, and knock him out.
00:15:46And Mayorga's already landed a couple of good right hands.
00:15:49And Cotto, throughout his career, has been hurt early in fights.
00:15:52Big body shot.
00:15:53Mayorga says, you didn't hurt me.
00:15:55Mayorga's so dangerous and so vulnerable.
00:15:57A recipe for excitement.
00:16:00He'll swing for the fences.
00:16:01His wild punches, wall angle, banging to the head with that right hand, Mayorga.
00:16:06This is really kind of what we expected.
00:16:08It's going to be a shootout for however long it lasts.
00:16:12Yeah, I don't think this is going to be a tactical fight.
00:16:17Mayorga, a street brawler.
00:16:21Cotto's jab has been pretty effective early in this round.
00:16:25Whoa.
00:16:27A wild swing and a miss by Mayorga, just as Bird was getting in.
00:16:31Mayorga tried to shake hands with Cotto, and Cotto said, uh-uh.
00:16:36All business.
00:16:38Under a minute left in round one.
00:16:40Another couple of chopping right hands to the head by Mayorga.
00:16:45Mayorga talking to Cotto, taunting him even after the fight buildup, during the fight.
00:16:50No let-up.
00:16:52No let-up.
00:16:55Mayorga has to feel happy that he has been able to get a few of those right hands in.
00:17:00But Cotto has also done some very good work here in round one.
00:17:02Left hook to the body by Cotto.
00:17:11Mayorga just shakes it off.
00:17:13Oh, a left hook to the chest by Mayorga.
00:17:17And that nice right hand got in.
00:17:19That's a beautiful hook by Cotto just landed.
00:17:21Well, it doesn't look like Mayorga's predictions will come true in round one.
00:17:26They are trading big punches one at a time.
00:17:31Back and forth action.
00:17:34Scintillating first draw.
00:17:36Oh, wow.
00:17:45Just a matter of time.
00:17:46The head is up.
00:17:47This is your key.
00:17:48That's what they do.
00:17:49You're breaking them down slowly.
00:17:52That's the name.
00:17:53Miguel Cotto getting off with this left hook to the head of Mayorga in a wild exchange.
00:18:04So he doesn't want the wild exchanges.
00:18:06And then Mayorga able to land a couple of chopping right hands even behind the ear.
00:18:11Yep.
00:18:12And then Miguel Cotto coming back later in the round.
00:18:15Yeah, they both had moments in that round.
00:18:17It was a very close round.
00:18:22And electric because you got the feeling some home run punch was going to land.
00:18:27Yep.
00:18:29Little blood on the brow of Miguel Cotto.
00:18:34You see it right there.
00:18:35Little redness.
00:18:37Manny Stewart sends him out for round two off a tremendous first round.
00:18:43Manny Stewart once trained at Mayorga, believe it or not, for about a week.
00:18:46And he said, I couldn't take it anymore.
00:18:48I left.
00:18:50He and Cotto have ended this for this fight, though.
00:18:53We visited Mayorga.
00:18:54He trained seriously for this fight.
00:18:56Make no mistake about it.
00:18:57Yeah, somebody said that got it up to about five.
00:19:01Nice left hook by Mayorga.
00:19:02Right hand by Mayorga.
00:19:04Chopping away at Cotto.
00:19:05Ramming shots to the head of Cotto.
00:19:07Upper catch by Mayorga.
00:19:09Mayorga, no let up.
00:19:14Crowd going wild.
00:19:18That chopping right hand has found the home.
00:19:19And the worst thing that Cotto can do is let Mayorga get any confidence in this fight early.
00:19:25But Mayorga is hittable.
00:19:27He is a target.
00:19:30When you get into a pro all the war, let's see what happens.
00:19:32Good body work by Cotto there.
00:19:36Mayorga now dancing around.
00:19:38And you said it, Antonio.
00:19:40How long can the adrenaline of Mayorga last before the skill of Cotto takes over?
00:19:45But we're still in the adrenaline period.
00:19:49Yeah, Mayorga historically always starts off with a barrel of energy.
00:19:53Then we'll see what happens down the road.
00:19:55He hurt Shane Mosley early.
00:19:57But there's that nice right hand by Cotto.
00:19:59And he had surgery on his shoulder and says he's delivering the right hand better now.
00:20:03And then Mosley kind of hurt Mayorga at the end.
00:20:06Just a little bit.
00:20:06With a second to go, knocked him out.
00:20:08Just a smidge.
00:20:09Halfway through the second.
00:20:11And a brilliant fight.
00:20:13And I mean fight.
00:20:16There's the jab by Cotto.
00:20:18Trying to keep Mayorga at bay.
00:20:20Yeah, Cotto just going to have to stay cool, calm, and collected because it seems like Mayorga is fighting in spurts.
00:20:26He cannot fight at that intensity for long.
00:20:29And just don't get hurt while he's at his best.
00:20:31Got to be patient here.
00:20:32Definitely.
00:20:34Yeah, you can tell Mayorga's marshalling his energy.
00:20:36He's within the rounds.
00:20:40Yeah, he's taking a little breather from time to time.
00:20:46Regrouping.
00:20:47Uppercut blocked by Cotto.
00:20:48Cotto comes back.
00:20:50Cotto with a jab.
00:20:51Counter left hook by Cotto.
00:20:52It was beautiful on an uppercut that missed by Mayorga.
00:20:55And then Cotto missing with a big, wide right.
00:20:59Look at the reaction by Mayorga.
00:21:01Oh, what a lift.
00:21:02Half hook, half uppercut by Mayorga to the chin.
00:21:06Mayorga's doing commentary in the fight while he's fighting.
00:21:09That's intriguing.
00:21:0920 seconds left in the second round.
00:21:23Scheduled for 12 for the WBA Super Weld-A-Wake Championship.
00:21:26A little flurry there by Mayorga.
00:21:43Our translator, Felix DeJesus.
00:21:44Okay, sit down.
00:21:52You've got to keep working the jab.
00:21:55And you've got to keep your hands up.
00:21:58The right hand has to go over his left jab.
00:22:02Champion.
00:22:03You've got to put the right over the left jab.
00:22:09Mayorga trying to land.
00:22:11There's the right hand that he's been trying to throw.
00:22:15Missing against Cotto.
00:22:17And that's the right hand he wants to land.
00:22:19Those are not too straight.
00:22:21Tried the uppercut there and couldn't land it.
00:22:25And that was that kind of half-left hook uppercut
00:22:27that he landed a little bit during the round.
00:22:29But that was a Cotto round for the most part.
00:22:32Mayorga standing right there.
00:22:33Between rounds, a highly entertaining
00:22:35first two rounds here in Las Vegas.
00:22:38Round three.
00:22:41Mayorga comes out with a big right,
00:22:44just loading up with that right hand.
00:22:46Cotto in the black, Mayorga in the blue
00:22:47with the white trim.
00:22:51Nice left hook to the neck by Cotto.
00:22:54I mean, you have to love Mayorga.
00:22:56Win, lose, or draw.
00:22:57He's never been in a boring fight.
00:22:58A man always throws it out there
00:23:00and put it all on the line.
00:23:02And you've got to love it.
00:23:03He's a fan favorite.
00:23:04And when you combine it with Cotto,
00:23:05who also is very seldom in a fight this exciting,
00:23:08you have to get something that's fun out of it.
00:23:10Stirring action.
00:23:11Fairly early going.
00:23:14Nice little dance step by Mayorga.
00:23:16Manuel Stewart used to call his former fighter,
00:23:18Tommy Hearns, the Elvis Presley of boxing.
00:23:20Something exciting always happened.
00:23:21You could say the same for Cotto
00:23:23in most of his fights as well.
00:23:26Exciting in and out of the ring.
00:23:29And like we mentioned earlier,
00:23:30you know, if Cotto is allowed to fight at his pace
00:23:32comfortably like this,
00:23:34you know, it's going to take one of those punches
00:23:37that you don't see to slow him down.
00:23:39Cotto just walked into a right hand,
00:23:41right to the chin.
00:23:42And there's the left hook of Cotto.
00:23:48And Mayorga says, come on.
00:23:50Mayorga inviting Cotto in.
00:23:53Come on, fight me.
00:23:55Keep coming, he says.
00:23:57This is unbelievable.
00:24:00Crowd in a frenzy.
00:24:02He just stays there in the corner
00:24:04and invites Cotto in.
00:24:06But look at Miguel Cotto.
00:24:07What a cool customer.
00:24:09Yeah, he's not going to get goaded into that.
00:24:11He's not going to get baited.
00:24:15That's what Mayorga wants.
00:24:23Oh, is that an amazing sequence?
00:24:26And what an amazing sequence
00:24:28in which nothing really happened
00:24:30and it was exciting.
00:24:31Exactly.
00:24:31It reminds me.
00:24:32It reminds me of the time he's
00:24:33dropped his hand,
00:24:35stick his chin out,
00:24:36and Tito Trinidad
00:24:36hit him with two solid left hooks
00:24:38and the fight was over
00:24:39a little bit after that.
00:24:40Exactly.
00:24:41Yeah, be careful what you wish for.
00:24:49An interesting display
00:24:51of the patience and the poise
00:24:53of Cotto.
00:24:54And now look at him
00:24:55go to work on the body.
00:24:56He's a good fighter.
00:24:58Miguel Cotto with the jaw.
00:24:59Looking extremely confident here.
00:25:01Bouncing up and down.
00:25:02Abba on his toes.
00:25:05Mayorga is still dangerous.
00:25:07He's trying to sneak something in,
00:25:08a big punch in here and there.
00:25:10I mean, Cotto has to be
00:25:11on his P's and Q's tonight.
00:25:13Yeah, you're absolutely right.
00:25:14Still that right hand
00:25:15could get in there
00:25:16and hurt him.
00:25:16One of those fights,
00:25:17you have to be so focused
00:25:19against a guy like Mayorga.
00:25:20Mayorga's mom, Miriam Mayorga Perez,
00:25:25cheering her son on ringside.
00:25:27Final seconds of the third round.
00:25:33Oh, a nice right hand to the chin.
00:25:35Mayorga says,
00:25:36you didn't hurt me, Miguel.
00:25:38And he almost escorted
00:25:40Miguel into the corner.
00:25:42Come on back.
00:25:43Here's Mayorga's mom,
00:25:46Miriam Mayorga Perez,
00:25:48cheering her son on ringside.
00:25:54You're wasting punches.
00:25:55Now we're going to the fourth round.
00:25:59You guys sit down for a while.
00:26:00Sit down, sit down.
00:26:14You've got to keep
00:26:15with that right hand and working.
00:26:24How about this for Taunting Al?
00:26:30Amazing the way Mayorga is just
00:26:33asking him to come forward.
00:26:37I've never seen anyone
00:26:38that animated in the corner.
00:26:41And even between rounds,
00:26:43he refused to sit down.
00:26:44His trainers were saying,
00:26:45sit, sit, sit.
00:26:47And he continued to stand.
00:26:49Yeah, he's amped up.
00:26:50And what he was trying to do
00:26:51right there is to try to trick
00:26:53Miguel Cotto in all-out brawl.
00:26:55A fisticuffs to give him
00:26:56an opportunity to land a big punch.
00:26:59Round four is scheduled for 12.
00:27:05Mayorga continues
00:27:06to be so animated.
00:27:12And of course,
00:27:12for the most part,
00:27:13you don't win fights
00:27:14by talking in the ring.
00:27:16That was a big left hook
00:27:17that Mayorga just landed.
00:27:20And there's Cotto
00:27:21with an uppercut,
00:27:22but it may have come up short.
00:27:25Yeah, I thought that was our job.
00:27:27Yeah, I thought so.
00:27:28Yeah, talking.
00:27:29You know, the right eye
00:27:31of Mayorga looks like
00:27:32he's got some issue
00:27:33with it as well.
00:27:37Cotto bouncing around.
00:27:41And one of the stories
00:27:42of this fight, I think,
00:27:43is the right hand of Cotto,
00:27:44which, you know,
00:27:46he had the repair
00:27:48of the shoulder
00:27:48with an operation.
00:27:50And they said it was better,
00:27:52and truthfully, it is better.
00:27:54He's throwing it much better
00:27:55than before.
00:27:55Emmanuel Stewart said
00:27:56he doesn't,
00:27:57he can't recall Cotto
00:27:58really ever knocking anybody up
00:27:59with the right hand.
00:28:00It's usually the left hook,
00:28:01of course.
00:28:02That's his trademark punch.
00:28:03And he is a natural lefty.
00:28:05And he's really getting
00:28:06his jab working this round.
00:28:07Yeah.
00:28:08Beautifully.
00:28:08And I think it's safe to say
00:28:12as every round goes on,
00:28:14for Mayorga,
00:28:15things become more difficult
00:28:16because he tends to not
00:28:18be so effective
00:28:18in those later rounds.
00:28:20And we knew that.
00:28:21You know, we knew that
00:28:21the earlier rounds
00:28:22would be some of the most
00:28:23competitive rounds.
00:28:25Well, four was the magic
00:28:28number for Mayorga.
00:28:29He said he would get
00:28:30Cotto out by four.
00:28:33Right there,
00:28:34they exchanged left hooks,
00:28:35and those are the type of punches
00:28:36that Mayorga is depending on
00:28:38to hurt Cotto.
00:28:39The crowd so into it,
00:28:40reacting to everything.
00:28:41Nice right hand,
00:28:42and then a slip by Mayorga
00:28:44on the Tecate sign.
00:28:47For a moment,
00:28:47I thought maybe Mayorga
00:28:48hurt his foot,
00:28:51but it appears that he's okay.
00:28:55Both coming forward
00:28:58at the same time.
00:29:00You know, Mayorga's not
00:29:00by nature a great
00:29:01left hook artist,
00:29:03but he's finding some
00:29:03opportunities for that punch.
00:29:06Cotto's is much better,
00:29:07of course.
00:29:09It was the right hand
00:29:10against Cotto
00:29:10that got in against
00:29:12Yuri Foreman
00:29:12at Yankee Stadium
00:29:13back in June.
00:29:17Mayorga's squinting
00:29:18with the right eye.
00:29:19I'm not sure if there's
00:29:20a problem,
00:29:20but we'll see.
00:29:21Good body shot by Mayorga.
00:29:23He put all of it,
00:29:24all he had in that spot.
00:29:25And a low blow
00:29:26by Miguel Cotto.
00:29:30Chopping right,
00:29:30and on the right or left,
00:29:31a combination.
00:29:32Some of that got in,
00:29:33not all of it by Mayorga.
00:29:35Some of it was blocked.
00:29:35Cotto smiling.
00:29:38Cotto returning the favor,
00:29:40giving him a little bit
00:29:41of Mayorga.
00:29:43I think...
00:29:44Cotto's wife...
00:29:46Going wild.
00:29:50Melissa quite happy
00:29:51at that turn of events.
00:29:52I think a lot of it,
00:29:53but a lot more
00:29:55than Cotto wanted
00:29:56to get in,
00:29:56got in on that exchange.
00:29:58One more pressure on him now.
00:30:00A little pressure.
00:30:02You're giving him
00:30:03a lot of space.
00:30:03Let's start pushing him now.
00:30:08At the end of the round,
00:30:12one of the...
00:30:13one of a number
00:30:14of great action sequences
00:30:15in this fight.
00:30:17Mayorga was able
00:30:18to get in
00:30:18several good right hands.
00:30:19they're delivered awkwardly,
00:30:21but they can land
00:30:23and they have power,
00:30:24but that's where
00:30:24the smile started
00:30:25on Miguel Cotto's face,
00:30:27trying to suggest
00:30:28that I wasn't hurt.
00:30:29Yeah, he definitely
00:30:29got his attention.
00:30:31Okay.
00:30:33And round number five.
00:30:35Quickie, man.
00:30:39A sizzling affair
00:30:40here at the MGM Grand
00:30:42in Las Vegas.
00:30:43Mayorga checking back
00:30:44to see how close he was
00:30:46at the corner.
00:30:46Left hooks to the head
00:30:47by Cotto.
00:30:48Okay, says Ricardo.
00:30:49Come on back
00:30:50and try that again.
00:30:51And Mayorga
00:30:52with the left uppercut
00:30:53that got through the wickets.
00:30:55Cotto with a great uppercut
00:30:56that got through.
00:30:57Another one.
00:30:58Another jab now.
00:31:00Cotto going crazy.
00:31:03Now Cotto is taking it
00:31:04up a notch
00:31:04because of the combination
00:31:07that he got hit with
00:31:07at the round three,
00:31:09and he's bringing
00:31:10the pressure right now.
00:31:11Now, Miguel Cotto
00:31:12still has to be very careful
00:31:13not to attack wildly.
00:31:15Yes, he does.
00:31:15At the round four,
00:31:16he's got to be very careful.
00:31:17Yes.
00:31:19Cotto bouncing shots
00:31:21off Mayorga's head.
00:31:23A look at Crossroads scoring
00:31:24and a two-point victory
00:31:27in the unofficial cards
00:31:28by Kieran Mulvaney from ESPN,
00:31:30Lance Pugmire from
00:31:31the Los Angeles Times.
00:31:33But Diego Martinez
00:31:34has it the way I do
00:31:35all four rounds
00:31:36for Cotto.
00:31:38How do you have it scored?
00:31:39I actually gave the last round
00:31:40to Mayorga
00:31:41because I think he did
00:31:43a lot better
00:31:44than he did previously.
00:31:45That was the one
00:31:46he could have won.
00:31:48Mayorga missing
00:31:49with an uppercut attempt.
00:31:52But Cotto is determined
00:31:53to put some hurt
00:31:54on Mayorga right now.
00:31:55This is a changing
00:31:57of the guard right now
00:31:58because Cotto...
00:31:59Oh, nice right hand.
00:32:01Another overhand right
00:32:02by Mayorga.
00:32:04Looking impressive here.
00:32:05Missing there.
00:32:06Trying to end it
00:32:07on one punch, right?
00:32:08Well, and what makes
00:32:10this fascinating,
00:32:11we know Miguel Cotto,
00:32:12as great a warrior
00:32:13as he is,
00:32:14and only twice
00:32:15has he failed
00:32:16to win in his career,
00:32:17but he's been hurt
00:32:18in seven or eight fights.
00:32:19So it can happen
00:32:20at any moment with him,
00:32:22and that's what
00:32:22creates the suspense.
00:32:24And both Cotto's losses
00:32:26by TKO
00:32:27versus Manny Pacquiao,
00:32:28Antonio Margarito.
00:32:31Mayorga with four K.O. losses.
00:32:33Moseley, De La Hoya,
00:32:35Trinidad,
00:32:35and his first pro fight.
00:32:39Wicked exchange there.
00:32:41Cotto getting the better,
00:32:42finishing off
00:32:43with a brilliant
00:32:44left hook upstairs.
00:32:46I'll tell you,
00:32:47if Mayorga's in the type
00:32:49of shape that I believe
00:32:49he is,
00:32:50he's going to continue
00:32:51to try,
00:32:52round after round
00:32:53after round.
00:32:53He's going to be
00:32:54in this fight to the end.
00:32:55But now it's almost
00:32:56like target practice,
00:32:57a confident Cotto.
00:33:00And then Mayorga
00:33:01comes back
00:33:01with an overhand
00:33:02right to the head.
00:33:09Some resounding exchanges.
00:33:18A fight just
00:33:19chock full of highlights.
00:33:21That was blocked
00:33:22by Mayorga's gloves.
00:33:25With the crowd reacting.
00:33:26Left hook
00:33:27to the chin
00:33:28by Cotto.
00:33:29Final seconds
00:33:30of round five.
00:33:31The action
00:33:33doesn't let up.
00:33:34Right hand
00:33:35by Mayorga.
00:33:36Oh, okay.
00:33:43Miguel Cotto
00:33:44early in the round.
00:33:47Getting Mayorga
00:33:48against the ropes
00:33:49and working the body
00:33:50and that beautiful
00:33:51left uppercut.
00:33:52And Mayorga,
00:33:52of course,
00:33:53as is his won't,
00:33:54trying to get him
00:33:54to come in
00:33:55and make a silly mistake.
00:33:56Instead,
00:33:57in the center of the ring,
00:33:58where Cotto wants to be,
00:33:59lands great combinations,
00:34:01including the left hook.
00:34:03Cotto doesn't want
00:34:03to fight off the ropes.
00:34:04Now, they have
00:34:05a common opponent,
00:34:06Shane Mosley,
00:34:07in a close decision
00:34:08with a loss to Cotto
00:34:09and, of course,
00:34:10knocking out Mayorga.
00:34:12Yeah, you know,
00:34:13it's time to make fights again.
00:34:14Yep, exactly.
00:34:15Not a lot said there.
00:34:39Round six.
00:34:43They told us,
00:34:44Emmanuel Stewart and Cotto,
00:34:45they want to capitalize
00:34:46on mistakes
00:34:47that Mayorga makes.
00:34:49And I think
00:34:49that is exactly
00:34:50the difference
00:34:51in this fight.
00:34:51Cotto has capitalized
00:34:53on some of the
00:34:53technical mistakes
00:34:54of Mayorga.
00:34:56Yeah, we knew
00:34:56Mayorga wasn't
00:34:57as technical
00:34:58as Cotto,
00:34:59but like I said,
00:35:00he still has
00:35:00a punching chance
00:35:01in the way he came out
00:35:02and threw that left hook,
00:35:03right hand just now.
00:35:04He's trying to...
00:35:06Absolutely.
00:35:08And there's the numbers.
00:35:09You know,
00:35:09Cotto landing more volume,
00:35:11but Mayorga has landed
00:35:13his share.
00:35:13He's bounced some
00:35:14right hands off his head
00:35:15and thrown some
00:35:15very good body punches
00:35:17as well.
00:35:18And Mayorga a little busier
00:35:19in terms of number
00:35:20of punches
00:35:20than we would have expected.
00:35:22Oh, wow.
00:35:23Two swings and a miss.
00:35:27The whirlwind
00:35:28in the blue trunks.
00:35:34A little twisting
00:35:35left uppercut
00:35:36on the inside
00:35:37by Cotto.
00:35:37Yeah, as long as the rounds
00:35:40are continuing like this
00:35:41and Cotto don't get hurt
00:35:43with anything,
00:35:44I think the fight
00:35:45is in his favor
00:35:46as long as it goes.
00:35:49Miguel Cotto,
00:35:49and I'll tell you
00:35:50something else.
00:35:50Miguel Cotto defensively,
00:35:52and you know,
00:35:52he's improved his defense
00:35:53over the years.
00:35:55In this fight,
00:35:55he's slipping a lot of punches.
00:35:57And of course,
00:35:57you can do that
00:35:58against Mayorga.
00:35:59And remember,
00:36:00Manuel Stewart said
00:36:01they want to slip punches.
00:36:02They don't want to block them
00:36:03because if you block them,
00:36:04Mayorga stays on balance.
00:36:06Yeah, and he throws
00:36:06a lot of his punches wide.
00:36:08He's not the most
00:36:09technical fighter,
00:36:09and that's why you're able
00:36:10to get up under
00:36:11a lot of those shots.
00:36:12But it's the one that land
00:36:13that rings the bells.
00:36:15As you guys point out,
00:36:17the longer this goes,
00:36:18the better it would seem
00:36:20for Miguel Cotto
00:36:21as long as he stays
00:36:22out of harm's way.
00:36:27The jab of Cotto,
00:36:28we just saw it there again,
00:36:29is one of the headlines
00:36:30of this fight,
00:36:32and he has a good one.
00:36:34Approaching the final minute
00:36:35of round six,
00:36:37the WBA Super Well-A-Way Championship.
00:36:41Good body work by Mayorga.
00:36:43Stepped in with a combination.
00:36:45And the jab.
00:36:46Shout out by Cotto.
00:36:49Trying to keep Mayorga
00:36:50at a distance.
00:36:52In the Mosley fight,
00:36:53Mayorga's punches
00:36:54started to lose steam
00:36:56around the middle rounds
00:36:57and into the late rounds,
00:36:58and a little bit of that
00:36:59seems to be happening now,
00:37:00although he lands the right there,
00:37:02but he's slapping
00:37:02through this punch.
00:37:03Nice uppercut,
00:37:04followed by a left hook
00:37:05by Mayorga.
00:37:09A nice counter left hook
00:37:10to the head by Cotto,
00:37:12and a right uppercut
00:37:13on the inside
00:37:14by Miguel Cotto.
00:37:23Final seconds
00:37:24of rounds of round six.
00:37:25Miguel Cotto settling into a nice rhythm here,
00:37:35but he's got to be careful
00:37:36with Ricardo Mayorga.
00:37:38Jim Gray is standing by
00:37:40with somebody I think you'll recognize.
00:37:41Jim?
00:37:42Indeed you will.
00:37:43The great Mike Tyson,
00:37:44former heavyweight champion of the world.
00:37:45Mike, what's your assessment
00:37:46of what you're seeing here tonight?
00:37:47And you've got your daughter,
00:37:48Milan, with you as well.
00:37:49What do you think of this fight?
00:37:50You know, Jim,
00:37:52you know,
00:37:52these guys are way past their prime,
00:37:54of course,
00:37:54but these are just guys,
00:37:55two guys,
00:37:56that's putting on the best show
00:37:58they possibly can at this time,
00:37:59just trying to get a payday
00:38:01without getting hurt,
00:38:02of course, you know.
00:38:03That's a rather harsh assessment.
00:38:05Well, you know,
00:38:05it's a reality because no one's trying
00:38:08to hurt the object of fighting
00:38:09is either the total destruction
00:38:12of your opponent or his surrender.
00:38:14And we don't see either of that
00:38:17about to happen, huh?
00:38:18What do you think about Pacquiao
00:38:19and Mosley coming up May 7th?
00:38:21Wow, you know,
00:38:22from the assessment of Mosley's last fight,
00:38:24it doesn't look like he's going to do well.
00:38:26Yes, from that assessment alone,
00:38:27you know,
00:38:28but if I had a quarter for every time
00:38:29there was an upset,
00:38:31I'd be a billionaire.
00:38:32Last thought I want to ask you.
00:38:33You talked to Floyd Mayweather
00:38:34quite a bit periodically
00:38:36and a little bit more than that.
00:38:37Do you believe he will fight again
00:38:38and that we will see
00:38:39that other fight with Pacquiao?
00:38:40Well, I don't know
00:38:41if him and Pacquiao are going to fight.
00:38:43I'm sure he'll fight again.
00:38:44You know,
00:38:44just to think that Pacquiao
00:38:46fought such two finale fights
00:38:49with Marquez
00:38:50and it's hard to believe
00:38:52this guy's off almost two years
00:38:53and then he gets totally overwhelmed Marquez.
00:38:57You know?
00:38:58I don't know.
00:38:59It's going to be interesting,
00:39:00but if the fight turns out,
00:39:01I would just love to see the fight.
00:39:02I would love to see the odds
00:39:03if I can make it back.
00:39:04Mike, always great to see you.
00:39:06Good luck with your show
00:39:06on Animal Planet.
00:39:07Thank you very much.
00:39:08All right, Steve, back to you.
00:39:10All right, Jim,
00:39:11Mike Tyson returning to the scene
00:39:12of the infamous Bite Night
00:39:14against Evander Holyfield.
00:39:15I have to disagree strongly
00:39:16with this assessment of this fight.
00:39:18I think they're both trying to knock something.
00:39:20This hard impressed Mike Tyson.
00:39:22I guess.
00:39:23I'll tell you what it must be
00:39:25because these guys are hammering away.
00:39:27Look at that right there.
00:39:29Mayorga to the body.
00:39:30Missing wildly with the right hand gets in.
00:39:33Stinging right hand there by Mayorga.
00:39:37What an opening minute in the second.
00:39:39Oh, my.
00:39:40Great exchanges.
00:39:42Those are some heavy shots
00:39:44that Mayorga is landing right now.
00:39:45Uppercut.
00:39:46Uppercut on the inside.
00:39:47And that's going to be slowing Miguel Cotto down.
00:39:50These are heavy, vicious shots by Mayorga
00:39:54here in the seventh round.
00:39:55And he's winging away nonstop.
00:39:57One of the differences is
00:39:58Miguel Cotto has shown us
00:39:59all the big power punches that he lands,
00:40:02but up at 154 against a guy with a good chin
00:40:05didn't go down, didn't get him out.
00:40:07Exactly right, Al.
00:40:08Mayorga is still there with that power.
00:40:11Another right uppercut by Mayorga.
00:40:14Mayorga's throwing that uppercut from way out.
00:40:16Look for Miguel Cotto to counter that with a hook.
00:40:19Body shot there.
00:40:20Mayorga said,
00:40:21you didn't hurt me.
00:40:21It's one of the best rounds Mayorga's had in this fight.
00:40:25Very active in this round.
00:40:29Doesn't look like a guy who's been so inactive.
00:40:33Very sharp.
00:40:34One fight in the last two years.
00:40:37Yeah, and that was a bad knockout loss to Shane Mosley.
00:40:41Although it was a pretty close fight up until that last round.
00:40:46Mayorga just charging in.
00:40:53Missing with most of those.
00:40:55But it looked good.
00:40:58Of course, Mayorga with a tune-up fight
00:40:59after that Mosley fight as well.
00:41:01Yeah, Michael Walker.
00:41:02Yeah.
00:41:02Against a, yeah, less experienced guy.
00:41:06He had his way in that fight.
00:41:07Well, this was the best round Mayorga's had making the fight.
00:41:10Look at him go to town.
00:41:11It continues.
00:41:12Big round for Mayorga.
00:41:13That right hand buckled Cotto,
00:41:15and it hit him behind the head.
00:41:16He's got some problems now.
00:41:18That got Cotto's attention.
00:41:21Mayorga looking to really pile on now.
00:41:25He's got 10 seconds.
00:41:26He senses that Cotto was really hurt.
00:41:31Right uppercut, bangs him with a right.
00:41:34Trying to end it on one point.
00:41:36Oh, it is.
00:41:38Oh, what a round for Mayorga.
00:41:43Now, sit down.
00:41:44Sit down now.
00:41:45That was a good round.
00:41:50Okay, breathe deep.
00:41:51That was a very good round.
00:41:55Give him some water.
00:41:56Let's go.
00:41:56Let's go.
00:42:01Things started out well in that last round for Ricardo Mayorga.
00:42:04We saw a different approach with that big body punch
00:42:08and ripping shots in the inside and the clubbing right hands.
00:42:11It was more energy than we'd seen from him
00:42:13in the last couple of rounds.
00:42:14And then he would really go to town.
00:42:17That uppercut, a big punch,
00:42:18and that right hand is the one you talked about, Antonio.
00:42:21Yeah, and if you get some replay at the end of this round,
00:42:24Cotto did not look well going back.
00:42:26It was corner.
00:42:27And great camera work.
00:42:28They're in so close.
00:42:29You see the sweat just flying up their heads.
00:42:34A concerned look on the face of Miguel Cotto
00:42:37as we enter into round number eight,
00:42:39scheduled for 12 for the WBA Super Welderweight Championship.
00:42:43Mayorga coming on in that seventh round,
00:42:45and he continues where he left off.
00:42:46Now, a key issue is the rabbit punching,
00:42:48and Robert Burr is talking to Mayorga about it.
00:42:57Mayorga's responding by saying,
00:42:58he's butting me, which I didn't see.
00:43:01Mayorga said he didn't hit a minute behind the head.
00:43:03It looked like he was targeting the side of the head,
00:43:05so I don't know.
00:43:05But, Al, we talked about that uppercut.
00:43:10He's using that uppercut as a decoy.
00:43:12He's not following through with the uppercut,
00:43:14but he's coming right over the top with the right hand.
00:43:16Yeah, that's true.
00:43:17Power punches overall,
00:43:24and that's now a margin for Mayorga,
00:43:26and in the last round,
00:43:27Mayorga gained part of that edge.
00:43:30And some of the reasons those power punches there
00:43:31are the body punching that Mayorga's done
00:43:33in the last three or four rounds.
00:43:35Again, Cotto wisely keeping it on the outside.
00:43:39Cotto's landed some monstrous left hooks in this fight.
00:43:41It just hasn't sent Mayorga down.
00:43:44And some beautiful jabs.
00:43:45Yeah, oh, boy.
00:43:47Mayorga hammering away.
00:43:53Right hand to the head.
00:43:55Uppercut just missed by Mayorga.
00:43:57And then there was the counter from Cotto
00:43:59with the left hook just over that uppercut.
00:44:03I'm going to tell you,
00:44:04we look at Mayorga's style,
00:44:05and we think he's this wild, out-of-control man.
00:44:08But this guy knows how to fight.
00:44:09I mean, sometimes you see him throw a perfect one-two.
00:44:13He's very sneaky with it.
00:44:14Uh-huh.
00:44:15He said you'd see a fast, strong Ricardo Mayorga
00:44:19from the days against Vernon Forrest.
00:44:22This is the best he's looked in a long time.
00:44:24Oh, yeah.
00:44:25What a jab that Cotto just hit him with.
00:44:27And that swelling around the right eye of Mayorga
00:44:29could become an issue.
00:44:30Double left hook there by Mayorga to the body.
00:44:33A left jab there by Cotto.
00:44:35But Mayorga with the show of your punches.
00:44:39And Cotto's staying in range for all these shots,
00:44:41which I know Emmanuel Stewart is telling him to move
00:44:44and give him angles.
00:44:45You are so right.
00:44:47You either want to be right inside against Mayorga
00:44:49or giving him angles, not in this punching range.
00:44:53Even with that, Cotto is still doing quite well,
00:44:55but he's taking punches.
00:45:05Oh, good sequence by Cotto.
00:45:12And that temporarily slows down the challenger.
00:45:16And Cotto has gotten his jab out of mothballs again
00:45:19to punctuate what looks like a Cotto round.
00:45:25Nice straight right hand to the head by Mayorga.
00:45:29Final seconds of round eight.
00:45:32Mayorga coming forward.
00:45:36But a big round for Cotto.
00:45:43You're winning every round.
00:45:44You're looking good.
00:45:46Boxing vehicle, baby.
00:45:49The jab is working still.
00:45:54Keep pumping the jab.
00:45:55You understand?
00:45:57You jab, beautiful combinations.
00:45:58It makes it good.
00:45:59And the jab is working.
00:46:02Here's where Mayorga got the warning.
00:46:04Now, two of those punches were definitely
00:46:06on the back of the head.
00:46:07He landed the uppercut and then threw those punches
00:46:10to the back of the head.
00:46:10And Robert Burr gave him the warning for that.
00:46:14Cotto's jab, which Emmanuel Stewart just talked about,
00:46:17was superb in the last round.
00:46:19And the, Mayorga coming forward.
00:46:26But again, that jab's a good effort.
00:46:28And there's a short counter left took by Cotto
00:46:32that's so effective.
00:46:34Cotto's jab looked great in the foreman fight.
00:46:37And he's carrying it over into this one with Mayorga.
00:46:44The left hook of Cotto for years,
00:46:46one of boxing's most devastating punches.
00:46:48Went away for a while,
00:46:49but returned with a vengeance his last fight.
00:46:51He's gotten some good left hooks into the body here tonight.
00:46:54The press row scoring, clearly a considerable edge.
00:47:02Martinez with 79-70, the biggest margin.
00:47:06And Kieran Mulvaney of ESPN, 78-74,
00:47:09as Lance Pugmire has it.
00:47:10Antonio, what do you say about this?
00:47:12I have it 78-74 for the, for the chance.
00:47:17Left hand by Mayorga.
00:47:18Gets Cotto a bit off balance.
00:47:21Comes back with a series of jabs.
00:47:23Combinations to the head by Mayorga.
00:47:40Those punches were pushed a little,
00:47:42but he did land them.
00:47:44And when he doesn't push them,
00:47:46they have lots of power on him still.
00:47:51Come on over again!
00:47:53I'll tell you what Mayorga has done for himself.
00:47:57He's behind in this fight,
00:47:58and unless he knocks out Cotto, he may not win.
00:48:01And there's some nice combinations,
00:48:02but he's raised his stock to some degree.
00:48:05Yes, he has.
00:48:06And it looks like he's out, off to a good start here.
00:48:09I mean, he's landed a couple combinations.
00:48:11He's moving.
00:48:11There's that beautiful jab by Cotto.
00:48:14Yeah, this has been a very good first half of the round
00:48:16for Mayorga.
00:48:17Yeah, from a marketability standpoint,
00:48:19this is working.
00:48:20But there goes Cotto.
00:48:21Back comes Mayorga.
00:48:22And those punches were all pushed.
00:48:24Those were arm punches
00:48:26that didn't have power by Mayorga.
00:48:28Beautiful jab by Cotto.
00:48:29Yeah, you know, you look at Miguel Cotto,
00:48:33and you have to say that his skill level is still very, very high.
00:48:49I don't think people can say that his confidence is eroded,
00:48:53but he doesn't still have a great skill set, because he does.
00:48:56Yes, he definitely has the skill set from the amateurs
00:49:00and from the amateurs and everything.
00:49:02But I tell you, 10-to-1 underdog,
00:49:03I mean, people expecting him to come in here
00:49:06and blow Mayorga out.
00:49:08And he's still getting hit with counterpunches right now.
00:49:10Yes, he is.
00:49:11Ricardo Mayorga not giving up.
00:49:13Wow.
00:49:14Blasting away.
00:49:15And Mayorga will probably now win this round
00:49:20because of the good start he had
00:49:21and the good finish he had.
00:49:24Final seconds of round nine.
00:49:27This is fun.
00:49:28Tremendously entertaining championship fight
00:49:32here at the MGM Grand.
00:49:33A very interested spectator.
00:49:40This is a man Miguel Cotto wants again.
00:49:44He bludgeoned the face of Miguel Cotto.
00:49:48There you see the results of that fight,
00:49:50the 11th round TKO.
00:49:52And he's getting a little treatment from the crowd.
00:49:54Well, obviously, because of the fact that his gloves
00:49:57were found in the next fight against Mosley to be enhanced.
00:50:00Let's take a look at that last round
00:50:04to moments that Miguel Cotto early and later in the round
00:50:09was very effective.
00:50:10And then here comes Mayorga.
00:50:12Mayorga had gotten off to a good start in the round.
00:50:15And in the middle part, Cotto was effective.
00:50:16But then Mayorga came back, bombing him with those right hands.
00:50:21That's three or four unanswered right hands.
00:50:23And I think they rocked Cotto.
00:50:25He threw a couple straight enough to hurt him.
00:50:27Not all of them, but a couple.
00:50:28Yes, he did.
00:50:29Cotto may be ahead, but we've had some tremendous back
00:50:34and forth action.
00:50:36There's no denying this fight has been fun.
00:50:40That it is.
00:50:41Round 10.
00:50:42that it is.
00:50:56No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:50:57Cotto is showing his polish throughout.
00:51:05Mayorga's showing his tenacity.
00:51:07AND OVER 12 ROUNDS, MAJORGA IS 4-2, AND CODO IS 4-1, SO BOTH HAVE BEEN THE DISTANCE AND HAD SUCCESS, MORE SO FOR CODO, OF COURSE.
00:51:32THE JAB OF MAJORGA, NOT A WEAPON MUCH FOR HIM, THROWS IT THERE.
00:51:42ONE OF THE REASONS MIGUEL CODO HAS BEEN A POPULAR FIGHTER IS THAT HE IS A VULNERABLE CHAMPION.
00:51:48YES, HE IS.
00:51:49HE'S VULNERABLE IN FIGHTS, AND YET HE'S EXCITING, AND MOSTLY HE WINS ALMOST ALL THE TIME.
00:51:53SO MANY PEOPLE WERE IMPRESSED BY CODO'S FOOTWORK AND HIS MOVEMENT IN THE LAST FIGHT WITH FORMAN,
00:52:00AND HE SEEMS TO HAVE CARRIED THAT OVER TO THIS FUNK.
00:52:02YES.
00:52:03HE'S GOT TO BE IN GREAT CONDITION.
00:52:04YEAH, HE DEFINITELY IS.
00:52:05THE ONLY THING I AGREE WITH THAT MIGHT BE AN ISSUE FOR HIM, AND ANTONIO HIT ON IT, AND HE STAYED IN AN AREA
00:52:12WHERE MAJORGA COULD HIT HIM.
00:52:14HE DIDN'T GET INSIDE, AND HE DIDN'T MOVE AROUND QUITE AS MUCH, AND SO THERE WERE TIMES WHEN MAJORGA COULD LAND THOSE WIDE PUNCHES.
00:52:21YEAH, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE IN THE POCKET AGAINST MAJORGA.
00:52:23YEAH, THAT'S EXACTLY IT.
00:52:24AND, YOU KNOW, COULD HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GOOD MOVER AND A BOXER.
00:52:28I ALWAYS THOUGHT WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER THAT HE MOVED A LITTLE BIT TOO MUCH AND DIDN'T GIVE HIMSELF A CHANCE TO PUT THOSE COMBINATIONS OUT.
00:52:34BUT NOW THAT HE'S GOTTEN OLDER, HE'S SETTLED DOWN A LITTLE BIT, NOW YOU CAN SEE HIS NATURAL RAW TALENT.
00:52:39THAT'S A GREAT OBSERVATION AND REALLY TRUE.
00:52:42AND A LOT OF PEOPLE PROBABLY, OH, WHAT A DOUBLE, TRIPLE JAB THERE BY MIGUEL COULD.
00:52:47A LOT OF PEOPLE PROBABLY SURPRISED THAT MAJORGA STILL HAS THIS MUCH LEFT IN THE TANK.
00:52:52AT THIS LATE POINT IN THE FIGHT, NOW COULD HAS HAD A VERY GOOD 10TH ROUND.
00:53:00WITH MAJORGA MISSING AS MUCH, YOU WOULD THINK THAT COULD HAVE MORE COUNTERPUNCH OPPORTUNITIES
00:53:06TO LAND SOMETHING REAL BIG WITHOUT TAKING A RISK OF HAVING MAJORGA FIRE BACK
00:53:12OR BEING OUT OF POSITION.
00:53:14THERE'S THAT BEAUTIFUL JAB BY KOTO AGAIN.
00:53:17THAT'S BEEN A VERY EFFECTIVE WEAPON THROUGHOUT.
00:53:21LEFT HOOK, HARSHLY BLOCKED BY KOTO.
00:53:25RIGHT HAND BY MAJORGA, GOT IN, TRIES TO JUMP ON TOP OF KOTO,
00:53:29BUT KOTO SLIPS AWAY.
00:53:32KOTO DOESN'T WANT TO GET THAT CLOSE.
00:53:36THAT UPPERCUT OF MAJORGA MADE ITSELF KNOWN AT THE LAST SECOND OF THAT ROUND.
00:53:40PROBABLY NOT ENOUGH TO WIN IT FOR HIM, THOUGH.
00:53:50WE DEMONSTRATE HOW THAT JAB GOT IN FOR KOTO AND HOW HE USED IT REPEATEDLY.
00:53:56THERE WILL BE THREE OF THESE THAT HE WILL USE AGAINST MAJORGA,
00:54:00AND HE'S BEEN EXCELLENT WITH THAT PUNCH.
00:54:03THAT'S THE WAY YOU DO IT, ISN'T IT?
00:54:04YEAH, BUT WHERE IS THE RIGHT HAND OR THE HOOK BEHIND THAT?
00:54:07THAT'S A GOOD POINT.
00:54:08BOY, YOU'RE AS HARD TO PLEASE AS MIKE TYSON, AREN'T YOU?
00:54:10WHAT A STICKLER.
00:54:11WHAT A STICKLER.
00:54:12HE'S RIGHT, THOUGH.
00:54:13AND THERE'S THE UPPERCUT FROM MAJORGA AT THE END OF THE ROUND.
00:54:16THAT WAS MAYBE HIS BEST PUNCH OF THE ROUND.
00:54:18AND HE FOLLOWED WITH THE HOOK, ALSO.
00:54:20WELL, YOU KNOW, WHAT YOU JUST SAID SPEAKS TO THE KEYS TO VICTORY.
00:54:23I SAID STEP IN WITH THE JAB.
00:54:24HE'S WILLING TO LAND THE JAB, BUT HE'S NOT WILLING TO STEP IN WITH IT.
00:54:27AND THERE YOU GO.
00:54:28AND, UH, THAT'S A BIG, UH, A BIG END.
00:54:32WHAT A DISPARITY, HUH?
00:54:33BUT YOU SEE THE MARKS ON KOTO'S FACE.
00:54:35HE'S BEEN HIT WITH SOME PUNCHES.
00:54:36OH, YEAH.
00:54:37HE KNOWS HE'S BEEN IN A FIGHT.
00:54:38ROUND 11.
00:54:39THEY CALL THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS.
00:54:40HERE WE GO.
00:54:41RICARDO MAJORGA IS STILL HERE.
00:54:43THEY BOTH PREDICTED THIS FIGHT WOULD END BY THE SIX ROUND OR EARLIER, AND I THINK EVERYBODY
00:54:54THOUGHT THAT.
00:54:55I'LL TELL YOU WHAT.
00:54:56MAJORGA KNOWS HE'S IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS, AND EVERYTHING HE'S PROBABLY TELLING HIMSELF
00:54:59HE NEEDS A KNOCKOUT.
00:55:00YEAH.
00:55:01SO I WANT TO BELIEVE HE'S GOING TO HEAD FOR THE FENCE HERE.
00:55:04AND WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT PRESS ROUNDS.
00:55:06OBVIOUSLY AN EDGE, BIG EDGE FOR KOTO, 98-92-2, THE SCORECARDS IN 99-91.
00:55:17AND, ANTONIO, WHAT DO YOU HAVE RIGHT NOW?
00:55:20I ONLY GAVE TWO ROUNDS TO MAJORGA.
00:55:21EXACTLY.
00:55:22YOU KNOW, IT WAS THE MIDDLE ROUNDS, FOUR, AND ALSO SEVEN.
00:55:25OTHER THAN THAT, IT'S BEEN ALL KOTO.
00:55:26AND, AGAIN, NOT TO BE REPETITIVE, BUT THAT SET IS STILL A HIGHLY ENTERTAINING FIGHT.
00:55:30YES.
00:55:31I GAVE HIM SEVEN AND NINE.
00:55:32IT'S THE SAME SCORER ARRIVED AT DIFFERENTLY.
00:55:34YEAH.
00:55:35FOR A FIGHT THAT'S ONE-SIDED, IT'S FUN TO WATCH AND GREAT.
00:55:39RICARDO MAJORGA, A BIG REASON.
00:55:44BUT A WELL-FOUGHT FIGHT BY MIGUEL COTO.
00:55:47YEAH.
00:55:48HE'S DONE A LOT OF THINGS REALLY WELL.
00:55:49IT'S JUST HE CAN'T KNOCK MAJORGA OUT, SO MAJORGA STAYS THERE.
00:55:54MAJORGA.
00:55:55WHAT A SHOWMAN.
00:55:57IS THAT ALL YOU GOT, MIGUEL?
00:55:58HE BETTER BE CAREFUL.
00:55:59YEAH.
00:56:00LEFT HOOK.
00:56:07NO CHANGE IN THE EXPRESSION ON MIGUEL COTO'S FACE.
00:56:15UNBELIEVABLE.
00:56:17THE FIGHT BREAKS INTO A SPARRING SESSION.
00:56:20WELL, OF COURSE, MAJORGA SAID IT WAS GOING TO BE A SPARRING SESSION FOR HIM BECAUSE IT
00:56:24WOULD BE SO EASY.
00:56:25AND IT HAS OBVIOUSLY NOT BEEN THAT.
00:56:27AND I DON'T THINK ANYONE REALLY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.
00:56:30THAT WAS A BUSINESS.
00:56:32AND IT'S GOING TO BE A SPARRING SESSION.
00:56:33AND IT'S GOING TO BE A SPARRING SESSION.
00:56:36NOW THAT WAS UTTER BLUSTER.
00:56:38YEAH, BUT TO HIS CREDIT, MAN, HE'S COMING TO HERE.
00:56:40HE'S LAID IT ALL ON THE LINE.
00:56:41AND STILL IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS, HE'S GOING FOR THAT KNOCKOUT.
00:56:42HE'S GOING TO STOP TRYING TO WIN, AND HE'S TRYING TO THROW AS MANY BOMBS AS HE CAN,
00:56:46YOU KNOW, WHEN HE CAN MARSHAL THE EFFORT.
00:56:49BUT HE WANTS COTO TO SIT STILL AND LET ME HIT YOU.
00:56:52HE JUST WON'T APPLY, TRY.
00:56:55THAT JAB OF MIGUEL COTO JUST BEFORE, WHILE YOU GUYS WERE TALKING, THE DOUBLE JAB.
00:57:00RIGHT.
00:57:02JUST KEEPING MAJORGA AT THE END OF IT.
00:57:04MAJORGA TALKING TO HIM, TAUNTING HIM.
00:57:06THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DEMEANOR OF THESE TWO MEN IS STARK.
00:57:09IT'S REALLY STAGGERING.
00:57:11BUT KOTO IS SUCH A QUIET, SHY GUY, YOU KNOW?
00:57:16HE REALLY IS.
00:57:17AND IN THE RING, HE'S ALL BUSINESS.
00:57:20AND MAJORGA IS ALL SIZZLE, BUT HAS HAD SOME STAKE IN THERE, TOO.
00:57:25YEAH, HE'S GOTTEN A FEW GOOD SHOTS IN.
00:57:28I'D LIKE TO SEE KOTO GO FOR THIS KNOCKOUT TO PUT AN EMPHASIS ON THIS FIGHT TONIGHT.
00:57:33WOULD THAT BE A STATEMENT, A DRAMATIC ENDING?
00:57:3611 IN THE BOOKS.
00:57:40THIS IS THE LAST ROUND.
00:57:42YOU NEED TO GO FOR THE KNOCKOUT.
00:57:44BREATHE, BREATHE.
00:57:45BREATHE.
00:57:46BREATHE.
00:57:47BREATHE.
00:57:48BREATHE.
00:57:49BREATHE.
00:57:50CHAMP, THIS IS THE LAST ONE.
00:57:51YOU GOT TO PRESSURE HIM.
00:57:52YOU NEED A KNOCKOUT FOR THE VICTORY.
00:57:53THE KNOCKOUT IS THE VICTORY.
00:57:54BREATHE.
00:57:56BREATHE.
00:57:57BREATHE.
00:57:58BREATHE.
00:57:59You need a knockout for the victory.
00:58:01The knockout is the victory.
00:58:29Can Riccardo Mayorga pull it out with trauma in the 12th?
00:58:36They touch gloves.
00:58:38Many here in the MGM Brands standing.
00:58:42Appreciative of the high entertainment.
00:58:46Oh, Mayorga is shot, and he's down.
00:58:51A delayed reaction knockdown.
00:58:53Oh, goodness.
00:58:55Will he be able to continue?
00:58:58He's in terrible shape.
00:59:00He's grabbing his hand as if something has happened to his hand.
00:59:03Yeah, he may have broken his hand.
00:59:05Mayorga, will he continue?
00:59:07He says, yes, let me continue.
00:59:09That is a game person.
00:59:12And remember, he was down in the 12th round against Shane Mosley.
00:59:16Almost a replay of that.
00:59:18They're all standing here at the MGM Brand.
00:59:21And this is what we wanted to see from Cotto.
00:59:24Oh, he's hurt again off of J.A.
00:59:26And now he just stands there, and that's it.
00:59:28He says, that's it.
00:59:29And Robert Byrne has stopped it.
00:59:33I think he might have broke his hand in that combination that they exchanged.
00:59:38But don't take anything away from Cotto.
00:59:39That left hook hit perfect.
00:59:41And look at Cotto.
00:59:42Goes over to Mayorga after all the pre-fight shenanigans.
00:59:46Oh, the trash talk, all the tawny.
00:59:49He goes over to Mayorga and asks him if he's all right.
00:59:51And Antonio's point's well taken.
00:59:53It was a great left hook by Cotto.
00:59:55But there probably was a hand injury to Mayorga,
00:59:58or he probably would have continued because he was able to get up.
01:00:01Or maybe he felt that left hook all the way to the wrist of his.
01:00:04That's possible, too.
01:00:06Got hit in the jaw and broke his hand.
01:00:08Well, a lot of heart displayed there by Riccardo Mayorga in that dramatic 12th.
01:00:14And he looks like he's in agony as they try to get that left hand.
01:00:18I got to wonder why that glove was pulled off that way.
01:00:21Wow.
01:00:22Yeah, that was not very delicately done.
01:00:26Yeah, I think we'll see in the replay.
01:00:28He probably landed that thing wrong,
01:00:30and in the heat of the action, probably fractured it.
01:00:34We'll see the knockdown courtesy of a left hook by Miguel Cotto.
01:00:44It's coming here as Mayorga attacks.
01:00:49Big left hook.
01:00:51And he's holding his hand there.
01:00:53I'm not sure what he hit his hand on.
01:00:54I didn't see it land.
01:00:55I mean, that was just a devastating left hook,
01:00:57and it probably just shook him all throughout.
01:00:59I guess.
01:01:00It's just so clearly holding his hand out.
01:01:03We'll get a look at it, and this may give us a better angle.
01:01:06Now, there he kind of hits it on the top of the head of Cotto.
01:01:09It was Cotto's left glove, I think.
01:01:12His hand hit the left glove of Mayorga.
01:01:15Maybe that was it.
01:01:16I think it was a clash of hands.
01:01:17Could have been.
01:01:18I mean, we'll find out, obviously, at some point.
01:01:20Perhaps.
01:01:21Perhaps.
01:01:22And again, another look at it.
01:01:24Now, we're going to see the left hook land by Cotto.
01:01:28Nothing yet with the left hand.
01:01:29I don't see anything with the hand.
01:01:30The only thing is prior to that, he had hit the hand on his head of Cotto,
01:01:34but just pushing it there.
01:01:36But I don't know.
01:01:37Yeah, that was bizarre.
01:01:38Yeah, it was strange.
01:01:39Well, there have been many aspects of this fight that have been intriguing,
01:01:42to say the least.
01:01:44Yeah, he may have heard it earlier in the fight,
01:01:46and may have exacerbated it.
01:01:48I know what didn't happen.
01:01:50That Chris left hook hadn't landed all night until the left hook.
01:01:53What a left hook by Cotto.
01:01:57And you look at the jab count by Cotto.
01:02:00Just, you know, amazing how he was able to land those punches.
01:02:04And ultimately, the left hook does in this man.
01:02:08And what else would it be with Cotto?
01:02:09Because that's his punch.
01:02:10And it was an exciting fight throughout.
01:02:12Yes, it was.
01:02:13And you have to really assess it and say,
01:02:15where's Cotto at right now,
01:02:17when you look at the top epsilon of the super welterweights.
01:02:21Taunted and insulted throughout the fight buildup,
01:02:23Miguel Cotto gets the last word.
01:02:26The word now from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
01:02:32Ladies and gentlemen,
01:02:34we have the time of 53 seconds in round number 12,
01:02:39with the fighter electing not to continue.
01:02:42A referee in charge, Robert Byrd, stops the contest.
01:02:45He is the winner by way of technical knockout.
01:02:48He is still the WBA super welterweight champion of the world,
01:02:55Miguel Cotto!
01:02:59So Miguel Cotto ends it the way he wanted to end it, by stoppage.
01:03:14The Cotto family extremely pleased and relieved, I think, as well.
01:03:18Yeah.
01:03:19Tough night to watch when you're watching,
01:03:21because there were some rocky moments.
01:03:24But give this man all the credit in the world.
01:03:26He fought a tough customer tonight,
01:03:29and he shows us that he still has it as a fighter.
01:03:31And this guy, a lot of kudos to him as well.
01:03:34Yes, sir.
01:03:35Ricardo Mayorga unable to recapture a world title belt.
01:03:41But Miguel Cotto, as expected, a nearly ten-to-one favorite,
01:03:46retains his WBA super welterweight title.
01:03:50Let's go up into the ring, and Jim Gray with the champ.
01:03:53Jim.
01:03:54All right, Steve.
01:03:55Thank you very much.
01:03:56Miguel, congratulations to you.
01:03:57How do you assess this fight and the fight that it turned out to be?
01:04:01No, it was great, you know.
01:04:03The whole fight was great, but the finish was amazing.
01:04:07Could you detect what happened there at the finish?
01:04:09I don't know.
01:04:10He said something about his hand, but I'm not sure what happened with his hand.
01:04:15How did you manage to stay so patient and stay within yourself and fight your game
01:04:20and not take the bait?
01:04:21Because on several occasions, Mayorga was begging you to come to him.
01:04:25No, he didn't.
01:04:26He didn't take me off from my calm during all the promotion,
01:04:32all sorts of things around the fight.
01:04:34He doesn't take me off.
01:04:35How come?
01:04:36He's been able to do it to everybody else.
01:04:38How did you manage to maintain your calm?
01:04:40No, I just keep him in my work, keep myself calm and just be myself.
01:04:46He's 38 years old.
01:04:47Is he a better fighter than you had anticipated at this point?
01:04:50Did you expect an easier fight?
01:04:51Pretty, pretty, pretty strong fighter.
01:04:53He has pretty strong hands and he can win and he can beat everybody, anybody.
01:04:58All right, let's take a look if we can here on the monitor, Miguel,
01:05:01and tell us what's going on here as the fight, the knockdown here.
01:05:05I think this hook was the one who decided.
01:05:09And then the stoppage, did you realize at that time, just before the stoppage,
01:05:17that he was not going to be able to continue?
01:05:19No, he's a tough fighter as usual and I know he's going to continue.
01:05:25Now, you said something to us yesterday.
01:05:27You said something to us yesterday in our meeting which astonished a lot of us,
01:05:32that you are now willing to reconsider and wanting to possibly fight Margarito again.
01:05:37What has caused you to reconsider and will you do that?
01:05:39You know, Bob is here.
01:05:41He's the guy in charge, in charge of my career.
01:05:45And as always, we always go for the way he wants me to go.
01:05:51But you're willing to consider that now?
01:05:53Yeah, you know, we always want the big names and Margarito is one of them.
01:05:58Congratulations to you.
01:05:59Terrific fight tonight.
01:06:00It was a good show.
01:06:02All right.
01:06:03Ricardo, if we can speak to you.
01:06:04Mr. Gonzalez, we'll be here to interpret what happened there at the end.
01:06:08Give me a second.
01:06:12I just want to say something.
01:06:19He never meant any offense during the pre-fight publicity.
01:06:22It's all promotion.
01:06:23It's all entertainment.
01:06:24He never meant any harm.
01:06:25Is that what he said?
01:06:26Exactly.
01:06:27Okay.
01:06:28Ricardo, what happened to you at the end of the fight?
01:06:30Turn around.
01:06:31The end of the fight.
01:06:32The end of the fight.
01:06:33Look, look, look, look, it's funny.
01:06:34It's all the way to the back of my hand.
01:06:38It doesn't matter.
01:06:39What I do is that I lost the fight, which was the most important thing for me.
01:06:45Because I don't care about the thumbs.
01:06:46The way I lost is what matters to me.
01:06:48I didn't want to lose.
01:06:49Okay.
01:06:50Can we look here at the monitor?
01:06:51And as we look at the monitor, trying to describe to us what happened?
01:06:54Describe what happened there.
01:06:56What you see in the image.
01:06:58He goes, my left thumb in one of those combinations I just felt hit to the back of my hand and that's
01:07:03when I started hurting.
01:07:05And then you decided you wanted to continue.
01:07:20What made him change his mind not to continue?
01:07:22CHICAGO PARTICULAR,
01:07:24CUANDO,
01:07:26YO LEVENTAS A PELEAR,
01:07:28QUE SUCEDÓ DESPUÉS DE ESO?
01:07:31MOVI EL DEBOS Y ME OLIÓ.
01:07:34Y SI NO PUEDO SEGUIR PELEANDO,
01:07:36ES MEJOR PERDER UNA PELEA Y NO LA
01:07:39VIDA.
01:07:41ESTABA CONTENTO CON TI MISMO
01:07:44CON LA MANERA QUE TU
01:07:47ACTUACIÓN ESTA NOCHE?
01:07:50NO.
01:07:51what's good and what's bad and that happens in life what what what will you do now he goes he hits
01:07:58really hard i don't take anything but he does hit hard what will he do now he goes i gotta look for

01:08:21for this gentleman that made me reach the top thank him congratulations to you on a great career
01:08:28thank you ricardo muchas gracias senior all right steve back to you all right jim well if mayorga
01:08:33didn't respect codo before the fight he sure respects him now we got a little news there too
01:08:39and uh the retirement of my organ score and we see the scoring obviously a big edge for codo every
01:08:44judge seeing it exactly the way at this time of this at the time of the stoppage so they had him
01:08:49ahead 107 to 102 and press row scoring uh was very very similar uh 108 101 on two and 107 102 on the
01:08:59other so everyone's seeing this fight pretty much the same way but as we said one of the most exciting
01:09:04one-sided fights you are ever going to see no question about it as we uh wrap things up a very
01:09:09exciting night here at the mgm grand in las vegas get to some final thoughts from antonio and from
01:09:15the esteemed al bursin and al uh uh your final uh comments on mr codo i'll tell you i want to what
01:09:21i want to say about miguel codo is that he will leave behind him a legacy of exciting thrilling fights
01:09:28and fights in which he showed great skill that's exactly what happened here tonight and fights in
01:09:33which he was vulnerable which made him very entertaining he's got at least one or two more big fights
01:09:38left in him i assure you based on what we saw here tonight and as we switch back to the champ i was
01:09:43going to ask you what's next for ricardo mallorca but he kind of answered that question with jim gray in
01:09:47the ring yeah you know he said earlier if he lost the way he lost he would consider retirement we knew
01:09:53if he didn't perform well tonight he'll be hearing those whispers but as a man he stood up and said you
01:09:57know what i think it's time for me to find a job but hey take your head off to him he came he showed up
01:10:02tonight when no one thought he could on paper they thought this fight would be a blowout and it
01:10:06was anything but that so my hat goes off to my yoga very highly entertaining fight indeed really was
01:10:13thrilling to watch so we want to remind you don't forget to tune in on may 7th for pacquiao and mosley
01:10:20on showtime pay-per-view that should be uh extremely exciting as well let's uh take a look at the
01:10:27results big night uh of boxing here in las vegas miguel vasquez retained his ibf lightweight title
01:10:33with a lopsided unanimous decision over leonardo zapovina from australia that got things going here
01:10:41at the mgm grand and tommy zibakowski defeated rich bryant with a hard body shot the end came at the 145 mark
01:10:48of round one for the baltimore ravens safety and the former notre dame team captain so tommy z goes two for
01:10:55two as a professional fighter and uh how about this pavel volak stopped uri foreman after six rounds of
01:11:02their super welterweight fight a uh tremendous job uh throughout by uh the polish fighter from new
01:11:09jersey to beat brooklyn's uri foreman the future rabbi and in our main event wow what a fight
01:11:16miguel coda retaining his wba super welterweight title with a 12th round uh stoppage of riccardo
01:11:23my yorka and there it is miguel codo still the wba super welterweight champion for al bernstein antonio
01:11:32tarver jim gray and entire crew steve albert saying so long from las vegas nevada
