00:00:00Yes, the trash talk has been flying.
00:00:03The fight built up a steady war of words.
00:00:05Now it is time for their fists to do the talking as these two skilled boxers are set to battle
00:00:11again.
00:00:14Now former lightweight titleist Diego Corrales, who over the course of his 11-year career
00:00:20has repeatedly provided us with spectacular and compelling fights, I think what draws
00:00:24us to the guy is simple, a combination of vulnerability and one-punch KO power and his
00:00:30willingness to face the best fighters in the world.
00:00:32As for this fight, I'm not sure even he anticipated this much genuine disdain from Casa Mayor.
00:00:41It could be the most bitter rivalry in boxing today.
00:00:46Come the fight, I'm going to prove to the whole world what a piece of crap he is.
00:00:49He's rude and he's very nasty.
00:00:51He's dirty.
00:00:52He's a dirty fighter.
00:00:54And afterwards, we can go out to the street and do it again.
00:00:59If controversy breeds antagonism, then the endings of their first two fights must have
00:01:05fueled their hate.
00:01:06Their first bout was filled with back and forth action, with three knockdowns in six
00:01:11rounds.
00:01:12But in a freak accident, a Casa Mayor punch busted Corrales' mouthpiece, opening a gaping
00:01:19hole in his lip.
00:01:20Bang.
00:01:21I mean, he hit me with his left hand.
00:01:24I mean, I felt my lip and it hurt a little different than normal.
00:01:27And all of a sudden, I'm getting this blood just pouring down my chin.
00:01:30I'm like, where is this coming from?
00:01:34I saw he was injured.
00:01:35I could see his jaw was loose, so I kept aiming for him.
00:01:43So I'm begging for one more round.
00:01:45So all I need is a little bit more time.
00:01:47I'm begging for a little bit more time.
00:01:50And I don't get it.
00:01:55He needs to thank God and the doctor for stopping the fight.
00:02:00If he had gone another round, that could have ended his career.
00:02:03Or he might have ended up dead.
00:02:06The rematch, five months later, was an evenly matched tactical battle, with only one knockdown
00:02:11late in the fight.
00:02:14I just got back to the A's.
00:02:16He beat me to the punch.
00:02:18Straight shots always gonna beat a looping shot. Always.
00:02:21Recovering from the knockdown, Corrales rocked Casemajor in the 11.
00:02:25And the fight went to the scorecard.
00:02:29I won ten rounds. Eight rounds minimum.
00:02:31If at best, he got four rounds. If at best.
00:02:38Ladies and gentlemen, we have a split decision in favor of the winner, Diego.
00:02:45I know when I'm winning a fight. I know. A boxer knows.
00:02:50It's like a pitcher. A pitcher instinctively knows when he throws a ball or a strike.
00:02:55I know I won that fight.
00:02:57Over the last two and a half years, the animosity between these two competitors continues to fester.
00:03:03He loves to try to put his elbow under your neck.
00:03:05I hate that. He always wants to grab the back of my head and hit me.
00:03:09He does a lot of fun stuff.
00:03:11He keeps it interesting.
00:03:14You're not going in the ring to feel good.
00:03:16It's boxing. It's not ping pong or baseball.
00:03:18It's boxing.
00:03:20The day they clean up boxing is the day I won't fight anymore.
00:03:23How many times have I been cut by this guy?
00:03:25In two fights, I had four cuts.
00:03:27That's ridiculous.
00:03:29None of them come from a punch.
00:03:31They all come from headbutts.
00:03:34Let's talk about how he cried like a baby for a rematch.
00:03:41I gave him a punch.
00:03:43I gave him a rematch because I'm a true champion.
00:03:45But he lied. He said he'd give me one soon, but he didn't.
00:03:48After their long campaign of angry words and bitter challenges,
00:03:52these two adversaries are eager to settle their personal differences and professional rivalry once and for all.
00:04:01I'm his daddy.
00:04:03He needs to come and kiss my hand.
00:04:05He needs to beg for my forgiveness.
00:04:08I feel I've earned respect.
00:04:10And if he doesn't respect me on his own,
00:04:12then I'm going to do what they're making me respect.
00:04:14That's what I'm here for.
00:04:18Taking the term familiarity breeds contempt to a whole new level.
00:04:22Here is Joel Casemajor, who's posted a record of 33-3-1,
00:04:26but could just as easily be undefeated.
00:04:29His points losses to Corrales, Castillo, and Asselino-Freitas were all disputed,
00:04:33as was his draw with Kid Diamond.
00:04:35Will the slick, counter-punching southpaw alter his style tonight,
00:04:40and go for a knockout in an effort to prevent the judges from deciding his fate?
00:04:44Casemajor is 35, and the answer could very well shape the remainder of his career.
00:04:52While the rivalry between these fighters remains contentious,
00:04:55it's been overshadowed by Corrales' unique history with Jose Luis Castillo.
00:05:00Ironically, the scales have played a part in the Corrales-Casemajor rivalry.
00:05:05Yes, the Corrales-Casemajor fights have been spiced
00:05:08with subtleties, strategic adjustments, and subplots.
00:05:12Back here with Al Bernstein.
00:05:13Al, it's a soap opera, it's a miniseries, it's reality TV,
00:05:16but bottom line, there is still a score to be settled here tonight.
00:05:20You know, there's a lot of emotion, a lot of drama, a lot of passion
00:05:24wrapped up in this fight, that's for sure.
00:05:26And a lot of it has certainly been created by Joel Casemajor.
00:05:30But the fact of the matter is, the most subtle misstep in strategy,
00:05:35or technique, or execution, could be what this fight turns on.
00:05:39And for Casemajor, it's especially important because he is first and foremost
00:05:43a technician in the ring.
00:05:45That, and his power, guides his possible path to victory.
00:05:54When Casemajor moves left, Corrales follows,
00:05:56and it's in perfect range for the big Casemajor left hand.
00:05:59Joel just wasn't busy enough to win a decision in their second fight.
00:06:04He needs to throw more punches.
00:06:06The left hand is the chicken.
00:06:08When he lands it, it almost always hurts or knocks down Corrales.
00:06:12Now, the left can land when Corrales squares himself up,
00:06:15as it did early in their first fight.
00:06:21And even when Corrales remains tall with the right hand up,
00:06:25Casemajor can still get that left hand in.
00:06:29And in the tenth round of their second fight,
00:06:31needed something dramatic, a short left sent Corrales down again.
00:06:35Casemajor needs to throw this punch as much as possible.
00:06:44Corrales controlled the second of their fights with his jab.
00:06:48He needs more of same tonight.
00:06:50He almost subconsciously drifts to the right to follow Casemajor,
00:06:54and then bang, he gets hit with the left.
00:06:56He can't afford that tonight.
00:06:58For him, the right hand is the punch du jour.
00:07:00When fighting at a distance, this tall, lightweight can get that right hand in,
00:07:04and it has as much power as his left.
00:07:16Strictly from a boxing standpoint,
00:07:18the fascination of this series is that each fight's been totally different.
00:07:23The first was intensely fierce.
00:07:25The second, very tactical.
00:07:27How will this one play out?
00:07:33The highly decorated Joel Casemajor,
00:07:35former world champion, Olympic gold medalist,
00:07:37one of the greatest fighters to come out of Cuba,
00:07:40a very proud man who felt slighted by Corrales
00:07:43for making him wait two and a half years for a chance at revenge.
00:07:47And then on top of that, Corrales failing to make weight,
00:07:50which jeopardized everything and left Casemajor just seething yesterday.
00:07:54Al, one insult after another,
00:07:56which has made him extremely bitter,
00:07:58and he cannot wait for that bell to ring.
00:08:01Well, if ever a fighter was walking into the ring
00:08:03with momentum already on his side,
00:08:05it's Casemajor.
00:08:07He's making more money in this fight than he thought he would.
00:08:10His camp in a good strategic mood
00:08:12made Corrales stay to the 147 weight earlier today.
00:08:16That could give him a great opportunity
00:08:19in terms of how they hydrate
00:08:21and give nutrition to Corrales.
00:08:23That could help him.
00:08:25And also, he could win the title if he wins here tonight,
00:08:28and will leave this ring no worse
00:08:30than a number-one contender with a guaranteed title shot.
00:08:33If that's all not enough to make you feel good
00:08:35walking into the ring, I don't know what is.
00:08:37Yeah, talk about being motivated.
00:08:39The cold, steely-eyed stare of Joel Casemajor
00:08:43seems very focused, very together,
00:08:45despite the near collapse
00:08:47of this fight just 24 hours ago.
00:08:49I asked him if the taunts, the insults,
00:08:52all the knockout talk was a ploy
00:08:54to make Corrales engage rather than box intelligently,
00:08:57as he did in the second fight,
00:08:59and he said, absolutely not.
00:09:01He said, it's all personal.
00:09:03And all along, Casemajor was calling Corrales a fake.
00:09:07And now, with the weight debacle,
00:09:09he feels kind of vindicated.
00:09:11There's only one thing he can do.
00:09:13There's only one thing left for Joel Casemajor,
00:09:16and that's sweet redemption.
00:09:22Now, a former world champion once told me
00:09:25it's a mistake to let emotions get in the way.
00:09:29But there's a deep rage burning within Joel Casemajor.
00:09:33He's very angry,
00:09:35as he returns to the scene of his first fight victory
00:09:38over Diego Corrales.
00:09:40It's a real catch-22 for this man.
00:09:43He does have all that emotion bubbling up in him.
00:09:46It's important, by the way,
00:09:48because he needs to punch more in this fight.
00:09:50He needs to not be such a technician.
00:09:52But I'll tell you what.
00:09:54He cannot let that emotion get the better of him,
00:09:56because, Steve, when it's all said and done,
00:09:58as I pointed out before,
00:10:00this man's a ring technician.
00:10:02That's the way he'll win tonight.
00:10:05As he continues to make his way slowly to the ring,
00:10:09getting some handshakes from his supporters in the crowd.
00:10:32A lot of emotions running through the mind of Joel Casemajor,
00:10:36able to let out a bit of a smile there.
00:10:38And he looks extremely confident.
00:10:42Just dancing around.
00:10:45Very, very eager to get this thing underway.
00:10:57There with boxing legend Roberto Duran,
00:11:00who is a huge supporter of Casemajor.
00:11:03Now former lightweight champ Diego Corrales
00:11:07coming to the scene of his greatest triumph,
00:11:09the first fight with Jose Luis Castillo,
00:11:12which made his name a metaphor for heart,
00:11:15courage, and fearlessness.
00:11:17But ironically, he's now in the same embarrassing position
00:11:20he criticized Castillo for back in June.
00:11:24Corrales prides himself on being professional,
00:11:27yet he committed what he considers a sin for a boxer.
00:11:31I know he's apologetic and claims responsibility,
00:11:35even as he admitted in his interview with Jim Gray earlier tonight.
00:11:40That's the definition of a hypocrite.
00:12:00It'll be interesting to see what kind of reaction
00:12:03he gets when he comes from the hallway there
00:12:06into full view of the crowd.
00:12:11Obviously because of what has transpired
00:12:13over the last 24 hours here in Las Vegas.
00:12:17And he's always been very popular here.
00:12:33Mostly cheers.
00:12:35Mostly cheers with a sprinkling of booze.
00:12:38My question to you, Al, can Corrales salvage his reputation
00:12:42and remove this blemish?
00:12:45Winning covers a multitude of sins.
00:12:48A big win, especially an exciting one here tonight,
00:12:51will go a long way toward it.
00:12:53There's no question about that.
00:12:55Point of note, Al, Corrales said he felt ten times worse
00:12:58than he did tonight.
00:13:01Point of note, Al, Corrales said he felt ten times worse
00:13:04yesterday than he did before the Floyd Mayweather fight
00:13:07when he struggled with his weight.
00:13:09You'll recall he got knocked down five times in that fight,
00:13:12en route to the worst defeat of his career.
00:13:16He's trying to drum up interest in this crowd,
00:13:18and he's not succeeding.
00:13:20They're more subdued in their reaction to him,
00:13:22and he gets a few boos.
00:13:24Yeah, he's trying to exhort the crowd.
00:13:28As you can obviously see,
00:13:31but it's a sprinkling of cheers and boos mixed together.
00:13:36He is a very resilient man mentally,
00:13:39has shown it in getting off the deck in fights,
00:13:42and now here he's gonna also have to respond mentally
00:13:45to the fact that he can see already
00:13:48that he has squandered a little bit of the goodwill
00:13:51that he normally feels here in Las Vegas.
00:13:55And we all know he knows he needs a spectacular win here
00:13:59to erase what happened at the weigh-in.
00:14:03Let's go to the tail of the tape.
00:14:05The numbers will favor Corrales.
00:14:08Big factor age, Castamayor listed at 35,
00:14:11six years older than Corrales,
00:14:13who is unusually tall and rangy for this weight, 5'10.5",
00:14:17a 3.5-inch height advantage, but just a 1-inch edge in reach.
00:14:21At the weigh-in, Corrales initially 139.5,
00:14:244.5 pounds over.
00:14:25Two hours later, he came in at 139.
00:14:28Castamayor right on target at 135.
00:14:31Key unified rules for this fight,
00:14:33there's no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
00:14:36A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:14:39If an accidental headbutt causes a fight to end within four rounds,
00:14:42it's a no decision.
00:14:43After four rounds, they go to the scorecards.
00:14:45If a punch causes a cut and the injured fighter can't continue,
00:14:48he loses by TKO.
00:14:54So here at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada,

00:18:51Once again, here's our referee in charge, Kenny Bayless.
00:18:56Okay, gentlemen, with all the rules in the dressing room,
00:18:58I want to caution, obey the commands at all times,
00:19:01and protect yourself at all times.
00:19:03Trunks are high here and are wide here.
00:19:06Punches thrown in the upper half is considered a clean punch.
00:19:09Lower half will be considered low.
00:19:11Now, gentlemen, good luck to both of you.
00:19:13Whatever I say, you must obey. Touchdown.
00:19:22I remember the words of Al Bernstein
00:19:24at the end of the second fight.
00:19:25Can you say trilogy?
00:19:27Well, 2 1⁄2 years later, here we are.
00:19:29Will Corrales be stronger, as Castillo was
00:19:32in their second fight, or weaker as a result
00:19:35of this latest addition of Wade Gate?
00:19:37Corrales' wife on hand to cheer him on.
00:19:40And you wonder if the emotions that are coursing
00:19:44through the veins of Joel Casemayor
00:19:46have a positive or negative or no effect on his performance.
00:19:50His wife, Michelle, very concerned that that weigh-in,
00:19:53as she watched him go through all that,
00:19:55and concerned that there might not be a fight.
00:19:58So a lot of emotion in the Corrales family.
00:20:00A lot of emotion in this building, too, right now.
00:20:02So here we go.
00:20:03Corrales wearing similar trunks from the first fight.
00:20:08The camouflage, Joel Casemayor in the white
00:20:12with the red and blue trim.
00:20:20Let's quickly get it over to Jim Cray.
00:20:23Jim?
00:20:24All right, Steve, you're talking about emotion.
00:20:26I've interviewed an awful lot of athletes, football,
00:20:28basketball, baseball, boxing, Olympians, golfers,
00:20:31everything before fights and so forth.
00:20:33I have never interviewed an athlete who, to me,
00:20:36was on the verge of tears, as was Diego Corrales.
00:20:39Steve?
00:20:40Incredibly emotional night here for both guys
00:20:44and for different reasons.
00:20:46Thank you very much, Jim.
00:20:48And you add to the equation that time may be running out
00:20:51for a very dramatic and highly combustible situation.
00:20:55And the question is, how much does each guy have left?
00:20:58And don't forget, Corrales hasn't fought in a year.
00:21:01Yeah, it's a very big point.
00:21:03And he suffered a crushing KO at his last fight.
00:21:06So we'll see if that factors in.
00:21:08Now, remember, when they last were in the ring together,
00:21:11there was a bout in which Diego Corrales, for the most part,
00:21:15boxed effectively, used the jab, which he's using early
00:21:19in this fight, and controlled the tempo.
00:21:22So far, it's looking like that fight again.
00:21:25Certainly not rushing in.
00:21:27The first fight, the first encounter,
00:21:30it was a lot of hitting.
00:21:32There were three knockdowns.
00:21:34And the second fight was much more technical.
00:21:38And the pace, at least the first half,
00:21:41well, really the most of the fight, was dictated by Corrales.
00:21:44The first half was controlled by Corrales.
00:21:47The second half by Casemayor.
00:21:49He scored a knockdown in the 10th.
00:21:51But then Corrales came back and rocked Casemayor in the 11th.
00:21:55But Casemayor has had Corrales down three times
00:21:58in the two fights, the 18 rounds of this series thus far.
00:22:02Casemayor moving to his right more than he did in the other fights.
00:22:07In other fights, he has tried to move to his right just a little,
00:22:10then always move back to the left so he could land the left hand.
00:22:13When he moves this much to the right,
00:22:16he can land a straight left hand.
00:22:20It's a very deliberate start here to this fight.
00:22:23The two previous encounters had very different auras, as mentioned.
00:22:26But the one constant throughout, Al, good back-and-forth action.
00:22:29A series where stereotypes have gone out the window,
00:22:32where you expect the unexpected.
00:22:34Because both these men have been able to adapt to different things.
00:22:37Listen to the crowd.
00:22:39They want more action.
00:22:41Too much of a feeling out process here in the opening round for them.
00:22:46Very close first round because there's a nice right hand by Corrales.
00:22:51And that's, as I pointed out, the keys could be a big weapon for him.
00:22:54And he lands another one when Casemayor comes inside.
00:22:57So a chess match. Two very cautious combatants, as Corrales looks back.
00:23:02Because Casemayor may have said something to him.
00:23:10As you look at common ground.
00:23:13Well, they've helped define the junior lightweight and lightweight division in the last years.
00:23:17And you can see the famous names on there.
00:23:19As they've both gone against the Castillos, the Freitas,
00:23:22Roberto Garcia, who was a champion.
00:23:25And don't be too misled by the fact that
00:23:28Casemayor doesn't have a win against either Freitas or Castillo.
00:23:31Because both those fights, very close, both fights that
00:23:34certainly Casemayor and his people could have made a case that he won.
00:23:38But as you look at those names, that also demonstrates
00:23:41how closely matched these two fighters are.
00:23:47And by the way, Asselino Freitas, of course, just announcing his retirement
00:23:50from the sport of boxing.
00:23:53Handed his only loss by Diego Corrales.
00:23:58Here we go, round two.
00:24:00The fans so accustomed to seeing so much more action from these two guys
00:24:04that they were very disappointed with the first round.
00:24:07And remember, Casemayor has, for the most of his career,
00:24:10been a more tactical fighter.
00:24:12But he's created knockdowns and excitement with Corrales.
00:24:15And part of the thing that he needs to do in this match,
00:24:18to make sure he doesn't walk away from here again,
00:24:21bemoaning a bad decision, he just needs to punch more, Steve.
00:24:24And we didn't see it in round one from him.
00:24:27Well, generally we think of Casemayor as just a slick boxer,
00:24:30but as we've seen in this series, he does have power.
00:24:33And one punch power with the left.
00:24:36But he knows he has to be careful early,
00:24:39particularly with Casemayor.
00:24:41That is when Casemayor is most vulnerable.
00:24:45Historically, he is not a fast starter.
00:24:48And he wants to take no chances with Corrales.
00:24:53Corrales, of course, made the adjustments in the second fight,
00:24:56discouraging Casemayor with the effective jab
00:25:00and just enough with his left hook.
00:25:02So now a lot of people feel that the ball
00:25:04is now in Casemayor's court.
00:25:06Will he find ways to land his straight left?
00:25:09And the crowd continues to show displeasure here.
00:25:12This is not what they expected.
00:25:14Now, there's two things important to note.
00:25:16David Corrales, remember, in their second fight,
00:25:18did fight a more measured fight,
00:25:20but he was active while he was in the outside.
00:25:22He's been a little less active in this fight.
00:25:24Let's remember, again, the issues with weight,
00:25:28how much does he weigh,
00:25:30how much did he plead himself coming in,
00:25:33does he feel like he needs to conserve even more energy
00:25:36as we move through this fight?
00:25:38That's a possible question.
00:25:40That could be in the mind of Joel Casemayor,
00:25:44but Casemayor was all week building up the fact
00:25:47he wants to get at this guy, he wants to knock him out.
00:25:50But now, it's early, but it looks like he's of a different mindset,
00:25:55that he wants to take this thing deep
00:25:57and do exactly what you said,
00:26:00because Corrales is probably depleted
00:26:02and he'll have a better chance
00:26:04with a drained Corrales in the later round.
00:26:06And from Corrales' standpoint,
00:26:08he wants to marshal his resources
00:26:10and fight similar to the fight he did in the second fight,
00:26:14but just throw a few less punches.
00:26:16And in truth, that's exactly what he's doing.
00:26:18And you can make the case,
00:26:20Corrales has been fairly effective
00:26:22in his first round and a half.
00:26:24And now he's starting to use the jab more,
00:26:26which is absolutely the key in this fight to Corrales.
00:26:28Because even when he doesn't land, he controls things.
00:26:30It was certainly the key in the second fight,
00:26:33which he won by split decision.
00:26:35But a disputed decision at that,
00:26:37in the eyes of Casemayor.
00:26:44So Corrales continues to measure Casemayor out,
00:26:47and the crowd continues to boo.
00:26:50Time!
00:26:52Neither one really taking any initiative.
00:26:59Okay, that's all you can expect.
00:27:01This guy keeps running for me, great.
00:27:03He's trying to pot shot you every so often
00:27:05when he slows down.
00:27:07He tries to take that little crack at you.
00:27:09Uh-huh.
00:27:11Take that right there.
00:27:13Um, you know what?
00:27:15D.
00:27:17Keep the feints going.
00:27:19Keep sliding over to his right a little bit now.
00:27:21What's gonna happen is he's gonna try to loop
00:27:23that left hand now if you move to your right.
00:27:25Okay?
00:27:27So just be aware of that.
00:27:29And that's the one you get under
00:27:31and you take a little body with that.
00:27:33But every so often, poke out that lead right hand
00:27:35and slide under if it doesn't connect.
00:27:37You know what I mean?
00:27:39Even if it does.
00:27:41That's right.
00:27:43Very good.
00:27:45You're putting the pressure on here.
00:27:47You're the one who looks like you want to fight.
00:27:49Okay?
00:27:51Let's go.
00:27:53Yep, we got it.
00:27:55There's probably no one, Al,
00:27:57who knows Joel Casemajor better
00:27:59than Joe Gerson,
00:28:01Corrales' trainer.
00:28:03He worked with, of course, Casemajor
00:28:05all the way through his career
00:28:07until the first time Corrales fought Casemajor.
00:28:09He had switched over already to Corrales.
00:28:11In one of the more dramatic switches
00:28:14boxing annals, switching over to Diego Corrales
00:28:16and guided him to the victory
00:28:18in fight number two.
00:28:20Now, the only interesting piece of advice
00:28:22that they kind of want Corrales
00:28:24is to step to the right and go under the looping left hand.
00:28:26I just worry that, from Corrales' standpoint,
00:28:28when you move to your right,
00:28:30you give Casemajor a better shot to land that right hand.
00:28:34Joel Casemajor, right now,
00:28:36needs to unload that left.
00:28:38He's got to start throwing it
00:28:40and touching Corrales.
00:28:42If Corrales wins any of these early rounds,
00:28:44he's going to be bemoaning the same fate
00:28:46that he had in the second fight
00:28:48and he'll be, again, complaining
00:28:50about a close decision loss
00:28:52if Corrales has the stamina in those later rounds.
00:28:54And just to remind the fans,
00:28:56all three knockouts scored against Corrales
00:28:58by Casemajor with the left hand.
00:29:04But you're right.
00:29:06There could be controversy after the fight
00:29:08as well if Corrales wins,
00:29:10particularly by knockout.
00:29:12Casemajor will scream it.
00:29:14Well, it's just like the second Corrales-Castillo fight,
00:29:16only this time it was Corrales with the extra damage.
00:29:18So it's unfair.
00:29:20Look out.
00:29:26Casemajor, who's been known to bend the rules
00:29:28just a bit, admits he's a dirty fighter.
00:29:32Had a point deducted at a terrible time
00:29:34in the first fight for holding Corrales' head down.
00:29:37Also, he opened up a cut on Corrales
00:29:39in the very first round of the first fight
00:29:41of this series with a headbutt.
00:29:43But if Corrales loses,
00:29:45Casemajor may not get the credit he deserves
00:29:47because people will say,
00:29:49hey, Corrales was weak
00:29:51with the weight problems.
00:29:53So it's a vicious cycle.
00:29:55There's the right hand by Corrales.
00:29:57That was one he should suggest.
00:29:59Now, in this round,
00:30:01Casemajor has thrown more left hands.
00:30:03It hasn't been dramatic,
00:30:05but in unloading that punch,
00:30:07it's been both to the body,
00:30:09as we just saw, and occasionally to the head.
00:30:11Casemajor scoring to the midsection there
00:30:13in that flurry,
00:30:15but then continues to stay away
00:30:17and dance around.
00:30:19The one missing ingredient, though,
00:30:21has been the consistent jab off Corrales.
00:30:23A left hand by Casemajor
00:30:25got through on the jaw of Corrales.
00:30:27He countered the right by Corrales.
00:30:29That's his best punch in the fight by far.
00:30:31And he is known as a pinpoint counterpunch.
00:30:33You got another left hand in.
00:30:35A return by Corrales,
00:30:37but it did not score.
00:30:41And a body punch there
00:30:43by Casemajor.
00:30:55It looks like Casemajor
00:30:57is beginning to eat the head here.
00:31:03The same thing.
00:31:05He's following you.
00:31:07He's following you around the ring.
00:31:09That's what you want.
00:31:11Okay?
00:31:13As long as you don't go in the ropes,
00:31:15you won't give the appearance
00:31:17that you're losing.
00:31:19Casemajor getting that left hand in.
00:31:21There it is.
00:31:23Kind of a looping left hand.
00:31:25And Corrales,
00:31:27he's got the jab.
00:31:29He's got the jab.
00:31:32Kind of a looping left hand.
00:31:34But he's landed from many different postures
00:31:36during the course of their series
00:31:38of first two fights.
00:31:40We see it from another angle.
00:31:42Now, even though the right hand was high
00:31:44for Corrales, he still got the punch in.
00:31:46And we saw in our replays before the fight
00:31:48during our piece to victory,
00:31:50he can even get that left hand in
00:31:52when he does that.
00:31:54Again, there's another left by
00:31:56Casemajor as he countered
00:31:58the right hand by Corrales.
00:32:02So for about
00:32:04three rounds, two-plus rounds,
00:32:06very tentative on both parts,
00:32:08but now Casemajor
00:32:10coming forth with more activity.
00:32:12There's a good straight left hand,
00:32:14and he throws that punch, it lands,
00:32:16and now he looks like he wants to get things going.
00:32:20Yeah, looks like
00:32:22Joe Casemajor has gotten a wake-up call,
00:32:24and we'll see how Corrales reacts
00:32:26if he can fend him off
00:32:28if he continues to use
00:32:30tactical measures, the jab,
00:32:32combinations.
00:32:34We really haven't seen
00:32:36the vaunted hook or double left hook
00:32:38of Corrales,
00:32:40which decked Casemajor
00:32:42in the first fight.
00:32:44I think Diego Corrales is almost
00:32:46willing this fight to be a
00:32:48slow-paced, even though Casemajor contributed
00:32:50greatly to that at the beginning,
00:32:52I think Corrales is happy with that if it would
00:32:54stay that way, and now Casemajor is being more
00:32:56aggressive. I think Diego wants a slow-paced
00:32:58fight.
00:33:00Nice straight left there by Casemajor to the head
00:33:02of Corrales.
00:33:04But it ain't happening right now.
00:33:06You asked Joe Goosen a very interesting question yesterday
00:33:08at the weigh-in, in light of what happened
00:33:10at the weigh-in, will they alter their strategy?
00:33:12He said we're in too deep, we can't
00:33:14alter it, and I think their strategy
00:33:16always was a tactical
00:33:18fight from the outside, but with more
00:33:20punches by Corrales, and I think mentally
00:33:22Corrales doesn't believe he can throw a lot of punches.
00:33:25Hold it, hold it! Step back, step back!
00:33:27There we go.
00:33:29Yeah, the busier he gets, the more worn out
00:33:31he may get as this fight goes
00:33:33on, and gets into the
00:33:35later rounds, perhaps.
00:33:40Hold it, fella! Stop, stop, stop!
00:33:42Listen, fellas, no wrestling!
00:33:44No wrestling, here we go!
00:33:46You worry about how well Casemajor can use his head,
00:33:48and we don't mean thinking.
00:33:50Now he is so known for
00:33:52his headbutting, and there's a
00:33:55left hook by Corrales,
00:33:57his best punch, and that got the attention
00:33:59of Casemajor. It spun him
00:34:01around a bit. Great move by
00:34:03Corrales, pushing Casemajor
00:34:05off, and getting that head away, and then landing
00:34:07a left hook to the head. The pace is picking
00:34:09up in this fight. Yeah, now Corrales beginning
00:34:11to impose his will a bit more,
00:34:13or at least starting.
00:34:15Casemajor comes back, snaps a leg.
00:34:19They're getting some decent exchanges now, after a
00:34:21very slow and tedious
00:34:24start. A good first part of this round
00:34:26for Casemajor, and that might be
00:34:28more than Corrales could
00:34:30handle trumping it, in terms of
00:34:32this later rally by Corrales.
00:34:34Although the Corrales left hook started to become
00:34:36a very important weapon. Starting to resemble
00:34:38more the first fight now.
00:34:40Good back and forth action.
00:34:42Two-way action.
00:34:46Final seconds of round four,
00:34:48the most entertaining of the fight
00:34:50so far. And the closest.
00:34:53Corrales missing with a
00:34:55sharp right cross there.
00:34:59And Casemajor with a stare down.
00:35:03See, you know what it is, D?
00:35:05Now, listen to me.
00:35:07Now you gotta press. Okay, hold on.
00:35:09No, it's good, Jack. Listen to me.
00:35:11You gotta press. You understand?
00:35:13I'm telling you. Because what happens
00:35:15is if we have too much time in between,
00:35:17he's able to reset, figure
00:35:19something out, touch and go. Okay, we don't need
00:35:21that. So what you gotta do is you gotta keep him
00:35:23on the defensive now. And that means
00:35:25this. If you're gonna walk him down
00:35:27with that... Diego Corrales
00:35:29landing that
00:35:31left hook. It wasn't a perfect left hook
00:35:33and it was immediately
00:35:35announced
00:35:37as not so good. But
00:35:39as we take a look from the top,
00:35:41you see that that left
00:35:43hand got in, despite the fact
00:35:45that Corrales wasn't in the perfect position
00:35:47to throw it.
00:35:49And very important
00:35:51announcement from Joe Gusin there and we'll
00:35:53see how it goes. Now, he thinks
00:35:55they've gotta be aggressive. We'll see.
00:35:57That's a key moment in this fight for him
00:35:59to tell Corrales to do that.
00:36:01So the complexion of this fight...
00:36:03Stop! Stop! Let him up! Hurry go!
00:36:05Beginning to turn.
00:36:07And by the way, the reasoning of Gusin
00:36:09is 100% accurate.
00:36:11Because Casemiro, when there's
00:36:13long time, can figure out ways
00:36:15to land that left hand. And the reason
00:36:17Corrales has to press is he's not
00:36:19using the jab as much from the outside.
00:36:21So it's giving all big uppercut
00:36:23by Corrales.
00:36:25And then
00:36:27Casemiro coming back.
00:36:33Both very
00:36:35measured.
00:36:37Extremely cautious.
00:36:42Seems like eats in every punch
00:36:44well thought out.
00:36:47When Casemiro comes
00:36:49in and lunges a little bit with that left hand,
00:36:51Corrales is now countering better with his
00:36:53right.
00:36:55Casemiro with a straight left hand
00:36:57to the jaw.
00:37:06The missing ingredient,
00:37:08we see the cross throw scoring there.
00:37:10Very close. I have a 39-38
00:37:12for Corrales with one round even.
00:37:14So thus far a majority
00:37:16decision for Joel Casemiro
00:37:18through four.
00:37:22Jeff Haney, Las Vegas
00:37:24son, Kieran Mulvaney, Reuters
00:37:26and James Smitty Smith from in this corner.
00:37:30Halfway through the fifth, scheduled for twelve.
00:37:32The rubber match.
00:37:35Corrales, Casemiro splitting the first two
00:37:37in very
00:37:39disputed, highly
00:37:41controversial fashion.
00:37:44And then the
00:37:46weigh-in controversy of yesterday
00:37:48when Diego Corrales came in
00:37:50four and a half pounds over at first.
00:37:59That noon today, Corrales
00:38:01was 145 and a half, Casemiro
00:38:03144 and a half.
00:38:05There's the jab of Corrales.
00:38:07And look how it sets things up
00:38:09when he uses that punch so much more
00:38:11effective.
00:38:14Watch the head, watch the head.
00:38:16Kenny Bayless, the third man of the ring
00:38:20with the caution about
00:38:22the noggins.
00:38:25Particularly to Joel Casemiro
00:38:27who has been
00:38:29penalized for that in this series.
00:38:34The latter part of this round
00:38:36Corrales has begun to use the jab more
00:38:38and has kept Casemiro at bay
00:38:40and made it harder for Casemiro to land shots.
00:38:42And the elusive Casemiro
00:38:44with some good defensive maneuvers there
00:38:46to get out of the way.
00:38:48And that left hand was blocked
00:38:50by Corrales.
00:38:52Let's see what they're going to call this.
00:38:54They're calling that a knockdown!
00:38:56It looked like a slip,
00:38:58was it a punch out?
00:39:00A punch landed, but the question is
00:39:02did it just knock him off balance or did he slip
00:39:04and shades of the freighter side now.
00:39:06Oh my goodness, Casemiro is beside himself.
00:39:08And Kenny Bayless
00:39:10says it's from a punch.
00:39:18When you come back
00:39:20you come back over here.
00:39:24It was nothing.
00:39:28When you use the jab
00:39:30Was there a punch
00:39:32that created the knockdown?
00:39:34A punch was thrown
00:39:36Absolutely not
00:39:38a knockdown.
00:39:40Absolutely not.
00:39:42And the feet got tangled up.
00:39:44Bad call for Joel Casemiro.
00:39:46A really tough one.
00:39:48The right
00:39:50the left hook was thrown
00:39:52but it only cuffed the head of him.
00:39:54He was pushed down
00:39:56and was pushed down by that.
00:39:58So the question is
00:40:00do you call it a legal punch?
00:40:02It really is more of a push though
00:40:04That's the reason he went down
00:40:06but you can't call it a punch
00:40:08so tough call for Casemiro.
00:40:10Big question will be how the official judges
00:40:12saw it. I wonder if they'll
00:40:14rule it a 10-8 round.
00:40:16I made it a 10-9 because of that
00:40:18to be perfectly candid.
00:40:20Clash of heads and a cut.
00:40:26And now the rubber match is really
00:40:28heating up. Casemiro goes
00:40:30right after Corrales
00:40:32And finally the Blues have turned to cheers.
00:40:38A straight left hand by Casemiro
00:40:42So a lot more sustained action
00:40:46If Joel Casemiro wants this
00:40:48he better go after it. And that's what he's doing now
00:40:50and you can make the case that
00:40:52I think Chico Corrales looks like
00:40:54a tentative fighter tonight. That's what he looks like.
00:40:56And if in fact he is
00:40:58Joel Casemiro should be able to expose
00:41:01that by going after him even though that's not
00:41:03his natural style.
00:41:07Corrales is just doing
00:41:09whatever he has to do
00:41:11to get by here.
00:41:13This is not the Corrales
00:41:15from the first or second fight or the Castillo
00:41:17series that's for sure.
00:41:21And with all that's happened
00:41:23leading into this fight not too surprised.
00:41:27Ultra cautious Diego
00:41:29Corrales. A little wilt beginning
00:41:31to form to the left
00:41:33side of Corrales'
00:41:35left arm.
00:41:37That came from that last banging of heads
00:41:39they had and now Casemiro
00:41:41doing some very very good work.
00:41:43So we'll see if that
00:41:45becomes a growing factor
00:41:47for Corrales.
00:41:53He's been involved in four cut
00:41:55situations in the two fights already
00:41:57of Corrales so
00:42:00here's number five.
00:42:07Left hand partially blocked by
00:42:09Corrales.
00:42:13More action from Casemiro
00:42:15and he missed widely with that
00:42:17one on the duck under move by Corrales.
00:42:19That eye
00:42:21may be
00:42:23starting to become a problem now
00:42:25for Corrales. He's blinking a little more
00:42:27heavily, the left eye.
00:42:30Maybe some blood getting in there.
00:42:33Casemiro needed to have a very
00:42:35very big round here to shake off
00:42:37the knockdown. He's doing it.
00:42:39And now he's looking cocky, brash
00:42:41showing bravado. Casemiro
00:42:43with the shoulder roll
00:42:45taunting Corrales
00:42:47as he had been doing all throughout
00:42:49the pre-fight build up
00:42:51but not in the ring.
00:42:53We remind you again of the one year
00:42:55layoff for Corrales
00:42:57which is enough to give you ring rust under any
00:42:59circumstances. Once again
00:43:01Casemiro
00:43:03showboating, taunting.
00:43:05That jive?
00:43:07You gotta get on his ass. Hold on, watch out.
00:43:09Get back here. No, it's not the duck.
00:43:11Watch out.
00:43:13It's like your daughter scratched you.
00:43:15Yeah, it's nothing.
00:43:17Okay, now
00:43:19Give me that answer, Jack.
00:43:21Alright.
00:43:23I honestly don't know what you're talking about.
00:43:25I don't know what you're talking about.
00:43:27I don't know what you're talking about.
00:43:29I don't know what you're talking about.
00:43:31I don't know what you're talking about.
00:43:33Stay back.
00:43:35Stay there. A little grease. Watch out, Ricky.
00:43:37Listen, get out.
00:43:39He came right on the headbutt of you, didn't he?
00:43:41Yeah.
00:43:43You know,
00:43:45when you were saying get the water out of him, he came right out
00:43:47and headbutted him right at the beginning of that round.
00:43:49Understand.
00:43:51The clash of heads that probably created
00:43:53that
00:43:55well, a little more than a clash of heads
00:43:57wasn't. He pretty much lowered the boom
00:43:59on Diego Corrales
00:44:01and
00:44:03That looked intentional.
00:44:05It did. And it wouldn't be the first time for him.
00:44:09And now as he works on the inside
00:44:11with good hand speed and combinations
00:44:13the irony is, of course, with his hands
00:44:15Casemiro did a lot of damage as well in that round.
00:44:17It didn't look all that bad
00:44:19in the corner of the cut.
00:44:21In fact, one of the assistants said
00:44:23it just looks like your daughter scratched you.
00:44:25In fact, he delivered
00:44:27his daughter.
00:44:29He did. Several months ago.
00:44:31Dalia.
00:44:35Which is phenomenal.
00:44:37Unbelievable.
00:44:39Round 7.
00:44:41In a fight that is
00:44:43becoming interesting after the
00:44:45very laborious start.
00:44:49There's Casemiro working the body, which also
00:44:51isn't a bad idea for him. Clearly
00:44:53what with the weight loss
00:44:55issues for Corrales
00:44:57and the question about his stamina as this fight
00:44:59goes on.
00:45:01First row scoring
00:45:03through 6.
00:45:07A split decision to Casemiro.
00:45:09Yeah, and you can make
00:45:11a strong case for either of those scores.
00:45:13The knockdown. I made it a
00:45:1510-9 round now
00:45:17for Corrales and troops
00:45:19simply because I just wasn't sure
00:45:21of the knockdown. The rest of the round was close.
00:45:23They gave the last round all to
00:45:25Casemiro.
00:45:27Round 5. All 10-8
00:45:29to
00:45:31Corrales.
00:45:33For the knockdown
00:45:35that really wasn't a knockdown.
00:45:41This is scheduled for 12.
00:45:45There's the right hand
00:45:47by Corrales that he needs to be
00:45:49thrown to the outside.
00:45:51It didn't land perfectly, but he threw it.
00:45:53Corrales looking a little more
00:45:55bold now all of a sudden.
00:45:57There's a look like combination upstairs by
00:45:59Chico Corrales.
00:46:01Chico Corrales.
00:46:03Casemiro had such a good round in the last
00:46:05round and in this round he's been a little more
00:46:07timid and Corrales has been a little bit more
00:46:09aggressive in terms of the punches he throws.
00:46:11There's the jab
00:46:13by Corrales.
00:46:15That's more of a balanced shot.
00:46:17It wasn't to set anything up.
00:46:19And then Corrales with an
00:46:21overhand right
00:46:23that nailed
00:46:25Casemiro.
00:46:27One of Corrales' better rounds actually
00:46:29coming off the not so good round
00:46:31in the last one.
00:46:37Quick counter left hook there by
00:46:39Corrales. He's been so much
00:46:41sharper in this round.
00:46:45Corrales continues to march forward, flips the jab,
00:46:47doubles up, misses with the right.
00:46:49Casemiro counters with the right but
00:46:53this is an important round for Corrales.
00:46:55He's done almost everything right in this round.
00:46:57Another straight right hand
00:46:59by Corrales.
00:47:02Yeah, much better round for Chico Corrales.
00:47:08And Casemiro going back to being tentative
00:47:10although he landed there
00:47:12right at the bell with a left hand.
00:47:14Well as part of our
00:47:16free preview weekend
00:47:18you have a chance to win
00:47:20an exciting trip each night.
00:47:22We'll give you a new code word

00:47:26Go to show.com or text message
00:47:28to 74688
00:47:30with tonight's code word DICE
00:47:32for a chance to win a trip
00:47:34to Las Vegas.
00:47:38Back. Don't give them that opportunity.
00:47:40You hear me?
00:47:42Okay, good, good, good.
00:47:44Keep that jab going. Keep that right hand up, chin tucked.
00:47:46And I want rhythm. As long as you keep that jab
00:47:48in his face, feigning, and you see what's happening
00:47:50that jab hook now
00:47:52is going to unlock that right hand off that hook.
00:47:54Okay? So keep that jab hook ready.
00:47:56Jab, uppercut, right. Okay?
00:47:58I'll wait and look for him to come back with a counter, baby.
00:48:02Uh-huh. I know that's nothing.
00:48:04You know when he stops, he's going to try to throw.
00:48:06Jack, give me a little tuck.
00:48:08Round 8.
00:48:10In round 7,
00:48:12Casemajor unable to do
00:48:14any additional damage
00:48:16to Corrales' left eye.
00:48:18He just couldn't sustain
00:48:20the momentum from round 6.
00:48:26There's Casemajor
00:48:28going down to the body. That helps him
00:48:30because it also lowers the guard
00:48:32of Diego Corrales.
00:48:34Oh, low blow.
00:48:37What a twist.
00:48:39It's from Corrales, not Casemajor.
00:48:45One of the few body punches
00:48:47Corrales has thrown in this fight.
00:48:49This is also interesting.
00:48:51They're allowed 5 minutes
00:48:53after a low blow
00:48:55to shake it off,
00:48:57but he just came right back
00:48:59and all the rough-out
00:49:01tactics. Here we go.
00:49:03Good work by Casemajor
00:49:05to go downstairs.
00:49:07I think it would behoove him,
00:49:09even though we're already in round 8,
00:49:11it would behoove him to go after the body
00:49:13of Corrales a little bit.
00:49:15We still don't know how Corrales
00:49:17is going to fare in those later rounds.
00:49:19And there is Casemajor again going downstairs.
00:49:21Should have done more of that earlier, really.
00:49:23Corrales giving Casemajor a little bit
00:49:25of his own medicine there.
00:49:27Suggesting one of those
00:49:29might stray low as we go?
00:49:31Just slightly.
00:49:33Casemajor aiming for the midsection.
00:49:35And look what that did.
00:49:37That set up that left hand to the head.
00:49:39And so, in this sequence,
00:49:41this minute sequence,
00:49:43Casemajor has found out a couple of things
00:49:45that he can make happen.
00:49:47He had kind of lulled Corrales momentarily.
00:49:49That's all he needed, because he's so fast.
00:49:51And more than anything,
00:49:53what's Casemajor doing in this round?
00:49:55He's throwing the left hand.
00:49:57And when he does that, good things happen for him.
00:49:59He's winning this round.
00:50:01And, of course, after Corrales looked good
00:50:03in the 7th round, now Casemajor
00:50:05takes over the 8.
00:50:11A right uppercut on the inside by Corrales
00:50:13and another couple of
00:50:15hot shots there by Corrales.
00:50:17Backhand Casemajor with a countering left.
00:50:19Casemajor thought Kenny Bayless
00:50:21was going to step in between, but their hands
00:50:23were free and Corrales threw
00:50:25that little short right hand.
00:50:27Casemajor was not hurt badly by that punch
00:50:29and that's staggering to me,
00:50:31because that was a tremendous right hand.
00:50:33Is Corrales turning the tide in this round
00:50:35and can he do enough in the last minute
00:50:37to not lose this round?
00:50:39Casemajor can take a hit.
00:50:41He's been down only three times in his career
00:50:43against Freitas, questionable,
00:50:45against Corrales in the first fight,
00:50:47and Daniel Sada in 2004.
00:50:51Another fight we did here in Chicago.
00:50:53Good left hand by Casemajor a moment ago.
00:50:55Straight right hand there by Corrales.
00:50:57He's been down eleven times in his career,
00:50:59three times against Casemajor,
00:51:01but he's climbed off the canvas ten
00:51:03of those eleven times.
00:51:08Final seconds of round eight
00:51:10as Casemajor comes back.
00:51:14Close round to judge, but
00:51:16Casemajor did so much in the first two minutes
00:51:18you have to feel like he might have won it.
00:51:21And the body shot by
00:51:23Corrales just before the bell.
00:51:27Nice and calm, nice and calm.
00:51:29Give me the bucket, give me the bucket.
00:51:33Listen to me.
00:51:35The last ten seconds
00:51:37you need a little more punch.
00:51:43Diego Corrales ripping
00:51:45a left hook to the body of...
00:51:47He's mad right there.
00:51:49He is mad about the head.
00:51:51That was deliberate by Diego Corrales.
00:51:53He was mad about the head
00:51:55work of Casemajor
00:51:57and then he said
00:51:59I'm going to show you,
00:52:01I got something for you.
00:52:03And that's what he did.
00:52:05Then later on
00:52:07as we mark the elbow
00:52:09of Corrales, I believe there was
00:52:11a little elbow activity as well by him.
00:52:13He brought that up
00:52:15and I think he was thinking about that too.
00:52:17So we have got
00:52:19an interesting battle going on.
00:52:21So far all the rough house
00:52:23stuff is deliberate.
00:52:25And there was one right on the
00:52:27belt line by Casemajor.
00:52:31But treacherously
00:52:33close to south of the border.
00:52:35Of course Kenny Bill is
00:52:37not in position to see that
00:52:39body shot by Corrales.
00:52:41The one that went very low
00:52:43and looked like it was measured.
00:52:45Round 9, a fight that is
00:52:47very close.
00:52:49Both a good hook
00:52:51by Corrales and a good left
00:52:53by Casemajor. Those are the two punches
00:52:55in the first fight that
00:52:57created knockdowns.
00:53:01They're going at it here in round 9.
00:53:03Some bigger punches being thrown and landed.
00:53:11Great right hand by Corrales.
00:53:13Casemajor
00:53:15shakes it up and dances away.
00:53:19Corrales
00:53:21on the march, the aggressor
00:53:23and then tied up by Casemajor.
00:53:25Wow, that's interesting.
00:53:27So we see the
00:53:29last couple rounds
00:53:31that we thought were close.
00:53:33Apparently the ringside scoring
00:53:35people certainly feeling more toward
00:53:37Casemajor. Yeah, unanimous decision
00:53:39but tight.
00:53:41You know,
00:53:43throughout all these two and a half
00:53:45fights between the two
00:53:47Corrales has still not figured out a way
00:53:49to step to his left and stop movement
00:53:51by Casemajor by hitting him
00:53:53with the left hook to the body and the head.
00:53:55Just hasn't quite gotten there.
00:53:57Corrales coming straight in right here.
00:53:59And part of that is because
00:54:01Corrales drifts to his right
00:54:03too much. It doesn't take a step
00:54:05to his left to stop him.
00:54:07Yeah, a lot more movement
00:54:09from Casemajor.
00:54:11See, you know, Corrales, when he approaches
00:54:13him, sometimes will veer off
00:54:15to his right and come back in, giving
00:54:17Casemajor the perfect angle to hit him
00:54:19with the straight left and we saw it just a moment ago.
00:54:27And of course a very effective punch
00:54:29in this series for Casemajor.
00:54:34Now in this round, some bigger, the showier
00:54:36punches landed by Corrales
00:54:38but what about the volume of
00:54:40punches in terms of things that are landed by
00:54:42Casemajor?
00:54:44Yeah, Casemajor the busier of the two
00:54:48here in round 9
00:54:50but a lot depends on how the judges
00:54:52see it. Sometimes they go for the heavier
00:54:54punch.
00:55:02Now Casemajor to the body.
00:55:04Let's see the phase
00:55:06Corrales.
00:55:08Good shot there by Corrales.
00:55:10Great left hook but
00:55:12not enough leverage on that punch.
00:55:14It was more of an arm punch but he's getting
00:55:16the left hook in a little more, Corrales.
00:55:18Is it a harbinger of things to come for Corrales?
00:55:28See what I mean? You gotta, hey look, if you don't
00:55:30make this guy fight, we're never gonna get the good shots in.
00:55:32Let me have some water real quick.
00:55:34You know when you throw, he gonna try to counter
00:55:36right hand.
00:55:38He gonna try to throw.
00:55:40You know that.
00:55:44Now, listen, two things I want you to remember.
00:55:46Keep that chin down, your hands up good.
00:55:50Joel Casemajor going to the body
00:55:52with that jab but taking a
00:55:54counter right hand by Corrales
00:55:56and so
00:55:58in that posture, Corrales able
00:56:00to counter him very well.
00:56:02Casemajor left hand, a very
00:56:04important weapon. He can get it in
00:56:06when he throws it. There was a perfect example
00:56:08of it. There's not created a
00:56:10knockdown in this fight yet for him as it did
00:56:12twice in the first fight and
00:56:14once in their second.
00:56:20With all the concern over Corrales'
00:56:22stamina, he hasn't faded
00:56:24yet. No.
00:56:26As you keep suggesting, with only
00:56:289 more minutes of action remaining
00:56:30we'll see if there are any
00:56:32late heroics here.
00:56:34Joe Gusu made the point to
00:56:36Corrales, you have to go
00:56:38to him or you won't land big shots.
00:56:40You have to create these
00:56:42little firefights with Casemajor.
00:56:44And of course if this is a
00:56:46very close
00:56:48decision in Corrales' favor
00:56:50it's like, here we go down that road
00:56:52again for Casemajor who
00:56:54is very upset with the scoring
00:56:56of the second fight. And this is a close
00:56:58fight, make no mistake about it. Tremendous
00:57:00right hand and hook by Corrales
00:57:02and then a left hand
00:57:04that's scored by Casemajor.
00:57:06Joe Casemajor can
00:57:08take a punch, we knew that already
00:57:10of course, from a body
00:57:12of work his whole career but tonight
00:57:14demonstrates the point even further.
00:57:18Yeah, he's not only a
00:57:20slickster, he's very rugged, very tough.
00:57:22Work out, work out.
00:57:24On the break
00:57:26he connected with a left hand, Casemajor
00:57:28and nothing
00:57:30in return from Corrales.
00:57:34Corrales
00:57:36coming forward
00:57:40but Casemajor too quick for him
00:57:42he's backpedaling but eluding
00:57:44the punches and he got a left hand in on
00:57:46Corrales there did Casemajor. We're
00:57:48halfway through this round and let me tell you
00:57:50tough round to score. Both men have done
00:57:52good work in this round.
00:57:54And Casemajor
00:57:56almost surgical here in round
00:57:5810. Picking his
00:58:00spots. Very sharp
00:58:03punches. The question is
00:58:05is he picking them too infrequently
00:58:07after Corrales had that
00:58:09first beginning stretch
00:58:11of this round. Well if this goes to the final
00:58:13final bell we'll soon find out
00:58:15how the judges are acting upon it.
00:58:17There's the jab of Corrales
00:58:19again not a punch he's used enough
00:58:21of in this fight. That was the difference between this
00:58:23fight and the second fight with Casemajor
00:58:25in which that jab was a very effective weapon.
00:58:30So after a slow start
00:58:32viewers across America
00:58:34enjoying some terrific boxing action
00:58:36here during this Showtime 3 preview
00:58:38weekend. Well we've had
00:58:40drama of every kind. We've had
00:58:42questionable tactics by both
00:58:44men here. We've had some very good punches
00:58:46landed and there's still
00:58:48drama in question.
00:58:50Corrales landing
00:58:52with a left hand
00:58:54a left hook to the jaw
00:58:56of Casemajor. That doesn't stop
00:58:58Casemajor though. Man is he landing
00:59:00that left hook and Casemajor is walking
00:59:02through those punches.
00:59:04Casemajor is sure going to hit
00:59:06better be careful.
00:59:13We head to the bell
00:59:15Corrales trying to end it on
00:59:17one punch.
00:59:23Well you go score that one.
00:59:25Oh wait I have to do it.
00:59:27No thanks.
00:59:30Go ahead.
00:59:36He said he got caught.
00:59:38You're good. You're good.
00:59:44Keep the 1-2.
00:59:46Keep the 1-2 going.
00:59:48Two more and we're the champions.
00:59:50Very entertaining
00:59:5210th round and here's part of the reason.
00:59:54Corrales landing
00:59:56that excellent straight right hand
00:59:58after the jab. Something he hasn't done
01:00:00enough of. Threw in a left hook
01:00:02for good measure.
01:00:06And later there's the right hand
01:00:08again by Corrales
01:00:10and landed the counter left hook.
01:00:12Later on Casemajor
01:00:14would have his moments as well
01:00:16in this
01:00:18round. The left hand always
01:00:20important and there it is again.
01:00:22When he throws the left
01:00:24it lands.
01:00:26It's been consistent for Casemajor throughout this fight.
01:00:28And their whole series.
01:00:30That straight left hand which has put Corrales
01:00:32down three times. He's looking
01:00:34for number four. Here are thanks
01:00:36to our translator Felix de
01:00:38Jesus in the Casemajor corner.
01:00:40Roger Bloodworth the trainer
01:00:42reunited with
01:00:44Joel Casemajor.
01:00:50Here we go round 11.
01:00:52We're in the championship rounds but of course
01:00:54if Corrales wins
01:00:56no championship
01:00:58for him. He has vacated the title.
01:01:00If Casemajor wins he's the
01:01:02champion. If he loses he's number one.
01:01:04He'll get an immediate fight with the
01:01:06interim champ David Diaz.
01:01:08He's a very good fighter and that
01:01:10would be an interesting match up. You know
01:01:12Daniel Corrales has said he's going to move
01:01:14all the way up to 147
01:01:16after this. Well there's an indication
01:01:18that Cressrow's scoring.
01:01:20I have a big left hand
01:01:22by Casemajor.
01:01:24Huge left hand.
01:01:28Astonishingly it didn't put
01:01:30Corrales down. I have
01:01:32it one point for
01:01:34Corrales at this point but
01:01:36you can make a strong case
01:01:38for Casemajor being ahead in this
01:01:40fight. Another
01:01:42hard left on the inside by
01:01:44Casemajor. I told him I won. Keep him in front.
01:01:46Don't reciprocate.
01:01:48You heard Teddy Bayless.
01:01:52There is irony in Casemajor
01:01:54complaining about him a little bit.
01:01:56But in his defense
01:01:58Corrales has not been a choir boy
01:02:00in this fight. Corrales doing a little
01:02:02rabbit punching there and holding behind
01:02:04the head which are
01:02:06characteristics of Casemajor.
01:02:16Well we're around 11 and
01:02:18while the fight was fought at a
01:02:20tragic pace early there have been
01:02:22certainly moments where it's heated
01:02:24up and Corrales has
01:02:26not faded completely as some might
01:02:28suspect if in fact he was
01:02:30in such dire physical straits
01:02:32as to be worried about fainting etc
01:02:34in the days leading up to the weigh in.
01:02:36No signs of that whatsoever.
01:02:38A chopping right
01:02:40missed by Corrales. Casemajor
01:02:42comes back with a straight left.
01:02:44A lot of people were wondering could
01:02:46Corrales under the circumstances make it
01:02:48deep into the fight. Well he seems to be
01:02:50having absolutely no problem whatsoever.
01:02:52And in fairness it will
01:02:54raise in cynics minds the question
01:02:56of whether he did complete himself
01:02:58to make the weight. Because that's
01:03:00the charge he made against Castillo. Castillo
01:03:02knocked him out.
01:03:04Good left hook there
01:03:06a moment ago by Corrales.
01:03:08Well on the left side of the head
01:03:10of Casemajor continues
01:03:12to grow.
01:03:14So they both have
01:03:16Welch now.
01:03:18Now grappling
01:03:20in the center of the ring is
01:03:22we are through 11.
01:03:24One to go.
01:03:26Another round for you. You won that round.
01:03:28There's no way they can score it
01:03:30any other way. Now listen
01:03:32this is the last round. He's got to go for broke
01:03:34as far as I'm concerned.
01:03:36Now here's what I need.
01:03:38I need real determination
01:03:40this round.
01:03:42Well Casemajor
01:03:44early in that
01:03:46round had some very good moments
01:03:48including that straight left hand.
01:03:54We take a peek at the left again
01:03:56when it's thrown by Casemajor it is
01:03:58effective. You can see that was a
01:04:00superb example of it. But of course
01:04:02as we also see there
01:04:04Casemajor seldom presses the attack
01:04:06after.
01:04:08Last round.
01:04:10The mouthpiece. You need the mouthpiece.
01:04:20Keep the gloves up.
01:04:22And here we go. The 12th and final round.
01:04:24They touch gloves
01:04:26and end game.
01:04:28Left hand got through by Casemajor.
01:04:30What's the key here
01:04:32to the final three minutes now?
01:04:34Well you know the key is exactly
01:04:36what we've seen before. For Casemajor
01:04:38it's to throw that straight left and throw it a lot
01:04:40and for Corrales it's to counter with the right hand
01:04:42and guess what? We saw that in the first
01:04:4445 seconds.
01:04:46And the other key I think is for one man
01:04:48to try his hand.
01:04:50He's got to be able to do it.
01:04:52He's got to be able to do it.
01:04:54He's got to be able to do it.
01:04:56And the other key I think is for one man
01:04:58to try his best to make a statement
01:05:00and I say it advisedly
01:05:02especially in the last half of the round
01:05:04because often judges remember it more.
01:05:06So a very close fight
01:05:08enters the 12th and final round
01:05:12and it could possibly come down
01:05:14to this round. There's your press roll scoring.
01:05:16One has it even.
01:05:18The other two to Casemajor.
01:05:20The majority decision to Casemajor.
01:05:22I've got it dead even
01:05:24Remember that knockdown early in the fight
01:05:26could be a key factor.
01:05:28A very disputed knockdown.
01:05:30It did not look like
01:05:32a real knockdown and Casemajor
01:05:34has a case.
01:05:40We approach the halfway point
01:05:42of the last round
01:05:44and again the showboating
01:05:46by Casemajor who thinks obviously
01:05:48he's ahead.
01:05:54Stop! Stop!
01:05:58So the rubber match between
01:06:00Corrales and Casemajor coming
01:06:02down to this.
01:06:06Again the left hand by Casemajor
01:06:08but Corrales does some nice work on the inside.
01:06:10This is just a very very difficult
01:06:12match to judge.
01:06:14Blood coming down the bridge of Casemajor's nose
01:06:16Now Casemajor said going into the fight
01:06:18he did not want to let this go
01:06:20to the judges.
01:06:24That's it!
01:06:34It looks like we're headed
01:06:36down the road to another
01:06:38very controversial decision.
01:06:40Unless something dramatic
01:06:42happens in these final 30 plus
01:06:44seconds.
01:06:50And this is a match that could go either way
01:06:52and I think this 12th round
01:06:54is a good indicator of that.
01:06:56Why we wanted to see if we could finally
01:06:58get a definitive and conclusive
01:07:00winner in this series and we're
01:07:02I don't know
01:07:04we're still going to be kind of left in the dark.
01:07:08Final 10 seconds
01:07:10of the fight.
01:07:13Corrales landed
01:07:15two nice right hands
01:07:17at the end. Is that enough?
01:07:19Not according to Joel Casemajor
01:07:21who's doing his celebrating early.
01:07:23Yeah the emotion
01:07:25the outburst by Casemajor
01:07:27who feels he's got this one in the bag
01:07:29as does Diego Corrales.
01:07:43Could these guys fight anything
01:07:45but a disputed
01:07:47or controversial fight?
01:07:49Apparently not and part of the reason
01:07:51for that is they both are tough enough
01:07:53not to be knocked out
01:07:55and they both have certain
01:07:57weapons that work against the other guy.
01:07:59Also interesting the corners
01:08:01kind of being a little more amicable.
01:08:03And after all the bad blood
01:08:05they come together.
01:08:13Red King
01:08:17Red King
01:08:19Nice words from Roger Bloodworth
01:08:21telling Corrales he's a warrior.
01:08:25Corrales' trainer Joe Gushin
01:08:27in the red shirt. But Casemajor
01:08:29no question he thinks it's his.
01:08:39So much for the bad blood.
01:08:43Some amigo now.
01:08:47A seminal moment in this fight
01:08:51occurred in round 5
01:08:53and we're going to look at it
01:08:55in a moment or two.
01:08:57The third embrace
01:09:01between two guys who engaged
01:09:03in a war of words throughout
01:09:05the fight build up
01:09:07and it was real. It was personal.
01:09:09Roberto Duran telling
01:09:11Casemajor he's got it.
01:09:13We look back at round 5
01:09:15perhaps the most important moment
01:09:17in this bout. A left hook
01:09:19not quite landed by
01:09:21Corrales. We look at the feet and watch
01:09:23how they get a little tangled up.
01:09:25He steps on the right foot of
01:09:27Corrales. Shades of Wepner Ali
01:09:29and because he was
01:09:31not in a good balanced position
01:09:33this left hook that swiped his
01:09:35head would knock him
01:09:37down. There is no question
01:09:39that the arm contact
01:09:41by Corrales knocked him down
01:09:43but do you call that a legal
01:09:45punch? I don't think it was.
01:09:47And the reason he went down is because
01:09:49of his foot being on the other
01:09:51Corrales' foot and his balance was
01:09:53betrayed.
01:09:55Casemajor was completely
01:09:57and utterly stunned
01:09:59by that call by Kenny Bayless.
01:10:05If you don't recall
01:10:07let's look at the scores from the first
01:10:09two encounters of this
01:10:11series.
01:10:15The first fight
01:10:17was October 4, 2003
01:10:19which was stopped after round 6
01:10:21controversially when the mouthpiece went through
01:10:23the lip of Diego
01:10:25Corrales and the very close disputed
01:10:27split decision for Corrales
01:10:29in the second fight March 6
01:10:31of 2004 and now
01:10:33here we are again Al with another
01:10:35controversial
01:10:37decision that we are
01:10:39waiting for from our man Jimmy
01:10:41Lennon Jr. And the reason we can say it's controversial
01:10:43is because either way it goes we
01:10:45know that somebody's going to be
01:10:47upset. There is absolutely no question
01:10:49about that.
01:10:59So coming up don't miss the next edition
01:11:01of America's Fight Night
01:11:03Saturday November 4th at 9 p.m.
01:11:05It's the WBO Heavyweight Championship
01:11:07as Sergey Lehovich battles
01:11:09Shannon Briggs
01:11:11and then
01:11:13later tonight we'll have
01:11:15the results and best fight
01:11:17nominees on our
01:11:19Showtime Championship boxing 20th
01:11:21anniversary. Stay tuned for all of that
01:11:23stuff coming up here on America's
01:11:25Fight Night. Right now let's
01:11:27go up to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
01:11:29for the particulars.
01:11:33Ladies and
01:11:35gentlemen after 12 rounds
01:11:37of boxing we have a
01:11:39split decision. Here are the
01:11:41score totals.
01:11:43Judge at ringside
01:11:45Jerry Roth scores about
01:11:47114 to 113
01:11:49in favor of
01:11:51Diego Corrales.
01:11:55Judge at ringside
01:11:57Nobuaki Uratani scores about
01:11:59115 to
01:12:01112 in favor
01:12:03of Joel Casamajor.
01:12:07And judge at ringside Adelaide
01:12:09Byrd scores about
01:12:11116 to
01:12:13111
01:12:15in favor of the winner
01:12:17and the new
01:12:19WBC Lightweight Champion
01:12:21of the world
01:12:23Joel Ezequiel
01:12:25Casamajor.
01:12:31It is sweet redemption
01:12:33for Joel Casamajor
01:12:35and you have to wonder
01:12:37how much the judges may
01:12:39have been influenced, not trying to start
01:12:41anything, but influenced by
01:12:43the weigh in controversy.
01:12:45Well it's interesting because as you look
01:12:47at these scores I think part of the
01:12:49one thing that the Corrales
01:12:51people and their fans will look at and wonder
01:12:53about is the 116-111 spread.
01:12:55That's enormously big
01:12:57especially in a fight in which
01:12:59Corrales scored a knockdown even though it wasn't
01:13:01an official knockdown.
01:13:03That's part of the scoring that's kind of intriguing.
01:13:05It should I think be a two point
01:13:07fight one way or the other at one point.
01:13:09What a wide margin. Adelaide Byrd having it
01:13:11by five points in favor of Casamajor.
01:13:13That's staggering.
01:13:15It is more so when you think that one of the other
01:13:17judges, Jerry Roth, had Corrales
01:13:19winning. So a split
01:13:21decision to Joel Casamajor.
01:13:23Let's get it up to Jim Gray in the ring.
01:13:25Jim. Alright, thank you very much.
01:13:27Roberto Duran in here
01:13:29shaking the hands and hugging Diego
01:13:31Corrales. First let me
01:13:33start over here with you first
01:13:35Diego. Your thoughts on
01:13:37this decision. I thought I won it.
01:13:39I thought I won. I thought I won.
01:13:41I have to go back and
01:13:43watch tape. I mean if I lost it
01:13:45I'll say I lost it. But
01:13:47I thought I won. Were you as sharp as
01:13:49you have been in prior fights?
01:13:51I thought I was pretty sharp.
01:13:53I boxed pretty well. I mean
01:13:55used a good jab, used some good feints
01:13:57started adding combinations later on in the fight but
01:13:59I thought I boxed pretty well.
01:14:01You never seem to tire or be
01:14:03fatigued so was this weight issue
01:14:05as much of an issue other than the fact
01:14:07that you didn't make weight?
01:14:09Nobody knows how tired
01:14:11I really am so
01:14:13I'm pretty tired.
01:14:15My body's, you know, it's running on fumes right now
01:14:17but I'm okay.
01:14:19Did you believe that you knocked him down in the
01:14:21fifth round or did you believe that that was a slip?
01:14:23I knew it was a left hook but I tell you what it wasn't
01:14:25a solid knockdown. It was one of those things
01:14:27where I caught him off balance. I mean it's a knockdown
01:14:29because I connect the punch but
01:14:31to say it's a legit knockdown, no it wasn't a legit
01:14:33knockdown because of the fact that I hit him while
01:14:35he was off balance. He fell over.
01:14:37It's a knockdown because he went down and my punch did
01:14:39but that's still, it wasn't one of those legit
01:14:41one of the aerial crowd's knockdowns. It wasn't one of those.
01:14:43Were you emotionally
01:14:45prepared and stable if that's
01:14:47the right word for this fight? Yeah I was fine.
01:14:49I mean I came out of the box well.
01:14:51I did everything I was supposed to do.
01:14:53Executed to
01:14:55the way we were supposed to execute my plan.
01:14:57I have nothing to be worried about Ocean
01:14:59but I came out of here like I said.
01:15:01Basically running on fumes. I'm going to go home
01:15:03and get some rest and
01:15:05take a look at this fight. And what will you do next?
01:15:09I assume we've seen the end of you at 135.
01:15:11Yeah you've seen the end of me at 135
01:15:13and as of right now it's time to go home
01:15:15and sign up for the end of me period.
01:15:17I mean, I don't know.
01:15:21Does that mean you're retiring?
01:15:23I haven't said that. I simply said
01:15:25it's time for me to go home and think about what I'm going to do.
01:15:27Appreciate you taking the time Diego.
01:15:31Joel, if you can stay with us
01:15:33for a moment here.
01:15:37What was your impression of
01:15:39the decision?
01:15:51Oh yeah.
01:15:55Well thank God.
01:15:57You know he won the fight clearly.
01:15:59He's very thankful that the judges
01:16:01saw it this way instead of the last three performances.
01:16:03You know you want to, but this time the judges
01:16:05were right by the decision.
01:16:07He's very happy about that.
01:16:09When you knew that you didn't knock him out
01:16:11and he didn't knock you out and it was going to the judges
01:16:13were you concerned about hearing the scores?
01:16:15You didn't knock him out and he didn't knock you out
01:16:17and you knew the decision was going to the judges
01:16:19and you were a little nervous.
01:16:21No.
01:16:23I was nervous, but yeah.
01:16:25It's like everything.
01:16:27I was nervous
01:16:29because they had already stolen my fight.
01:16:31And it was a very close fight.
01:16:33But I'm happy
01:16:35because it's my world title.
01:16:37I'm a champion for my people
01:16:39from Cuba, Miami
01:16:41and thank you to Chotan and Gary Chavez.
01:16:45I had three other fights that didn't go his way.
01:16:47The Freitas, the Corrales
01:16:49and the Castillo fight didn't go his way.
01:16:51The judges gave it to the other guys
01:16:53who was very, very concerned.
01:16:55But he knew they weren't going to take this one away from him
01:16:57because he won clearly.
01:16:59He just wants to thank all the people in Miami,
01:17:01all the Cubans and everybody all over the country and the world.
01:17:03Absolutely a convincing scoring
01:17:05when you take into account that it was ruled
01:17:07a knockdown in the fifth round.
01:17:09Did you feel you were knocked down?
01:17:11You protested and appeared not to think that that was the case.
01:17:13No.
01:17:15No, he never went down.
01:17:17He got pushed down.
01:17:19Everybody saw it when they showed the replays.
01:17:21He pushed him down.
01:17:23It was clear there was no knockdown.
01:17:25When we interviewed you before the fight, this was your quote.
01:17:27I'm his daddy.
01:17:29He needs to come to me and beg for forgiveness.
01:17:31How much of that do you hold?
01:17:33How much disdain do you hold for Diego Corrales?
01:17:43He says, you know, it's just, you know, before the fight,
01:17:45Diego's a great guy, you know.
01:17:47He's got a family like he does.
01:17:49They're all in the same business.
01:17:51You know, to win, they're going to do whatever they've got to do
01:17:53before the fight and get into another man's mind,
01:17:55they've got to do.
01:17:57But, you know, he's a great guy, and, you know, what can he say,
01:17:59you know, about Diego Corrales?
01:18:01How much were you unhappy with the fact
01:18:03that he didn't make weight?
01:18:06How much were you unhappy with the fact
01:18:08that he didn't make weight?
01:18:26You know, of course, he was a little disappointed,
01:18:28you know, for the commission, the fans, everybody came in,
01:18:30but, you know, he wasn't going to let his fans down.
01:18:32He was going to fight, you know, the same way, you know,
01:18:34Corrales did the second one against Castillo,
01:18:36but thank God, boxing is hit, not be hit,
01:18:38and that's why he took charge,
01:18:40established the jab from the beginning.
01:18:42Final thought, what now?
01:18:44Now that you have the title, what will you do?
01:18:58He says, you know, right now, he just wants to, you know,
01:19:00he wants to just be away with his family for a while,
01:19:02you know, and have a good time.
01:19:05Yeah, and the first time he ever got, he told me,
01:19:07the first time he got to the United States
01:19:09after he came over, you know, from the Cuban national team,
01:19:11we were out one night, and he goes to me,
01:19:13you know what, put me Barrera right now.
01:19:15Now maybe Barrera will come to him now.
01:19:17And Joe Goosland said something to you in your ear.
01:19:19There had obviously been, you know,
01:19:21a very changed position from when he was your former trainer
01:19:24and he had taken you in the first fight
01:19:26and then went with Corrales in the second fight.
01:19:28What did he whisper to you into your ear when this was over?
01:19:34He said, Joe Goosland knows I'm a great warrior,
01:19:36a great champion, you know, and, you know,
01:19:38he knows he's a warrior, you know, he knows that.
01:19:40You are indeed. Congratulations, Joel.
01:19:42Thank you very much. Thank you.
01:19:44Let's go back to you, Steve.
01:19:46Hi, Jim. Thanks very much.
01:19:48So I guess it's forgive and forget
01:19:50as far as Joel Casamayor is concerned.
01:19:52At first, Diego Corrales loses the battle to the scale,
01:19:54then he loses the battle to Joel Casamayor.
01:19:56And here are the scores.
01:19:58Yeah, and obviously, the one score
01:20:00You can make a strong case for Casamayor winning this fight.
01:20:02I just don't know if you can make a case for a 5-point win.
01:20:04Yeah, quite a margin there by Adelaide Byrd,
01:20:06particularly when one of the other judges,
01:20:08Jerry Roth, has Corrales winning.
01:20:10Here's the press row scoring.
01:20:12Let's see.
01:20:14Jeff Haney had Casamayor winning by 5.
01:20:16Kieran Mulvaney had Casamayor by just 1.
01:20:18And James Smitty-Smith had Casamayor by 3.
01:20:20A unanimous decision for Casamayor,
01:20:22but here's the score.
01:20:24And here's the score.
01:20:26And James Smitty-Smith had Casamayor by 3.
01:20:28A unanimous decision for Casamayor.
