00:00Welcome to my van home.

00:03It really hadn't occurred to me to be in the van full time

00:07until I saw someone else doing it.

00:10My name is Beverly Brown, I'm 59 years old

00:13and I currently live in my 2004 Chevy Express 1500 van.

00:25There are definitely some challenges about van life

00:29and it is absolutely not for everyone.

00:37I get asked a lot about the bathroom situation in the van

00:41and this is my toilet, which is also my footstool

00:46and occasionally it's my guest chair.

00:49I don't tell them what they're sitting on

00:50and basically I made this pretty little cover for it

00:55but it's just a little cassette toilet.

00:59So it has a water tank on top and a holding tank on bottom.

01:03The lid pops up, I take care of business,

01:07shut the lid, press this, it puts water into the tank

01:12and then when I'm ready to flush it,

01:14I pull the handle right there

01:16and the liquid releases down into the tank

01:18and then at some point, which is the worst part of van life to me,

01:25is I just unlatch it and take this bottom tank off and empty it.

01:31And then there's the shower situation.

01:37Basically, I have a bucket here

01:39and it's a collapsible bucket that I fill up with water.

01:46I set that there.

01:48I have a hose here

01:51and I dip the hose down into the bucket of water.

01:55I pop that up

02:00and hook up the shower nozzle to it

02:02and then I take the shower curtain

02:13and string it across the doors here.

02:16I have a bag full of clips

02:20and I'll typically just clip it to the handles on the inside of the van

02:30and string it across like that

02:41and that's my temporary shower for outside.

02:48At some point in my journeys,

02:50it truly has become my little tiny house on wheels.

02:54So I gave the van a name.

02:56I call her Jennifer Vaniston

02:58and then to go with that name,

03:00I had to get a Brad Pitt pillow

03:02and I tease and I say we make Brad Pitt stops

03:05and then occasionally Brad and I get into a pillow fight.

03:11A lot of people have opinions about van life

03:18and living in the van

03:20and sometimes it's a little critical

03:23that like they feel like I've screwed up my life

03:27and now I'm stuck living in a van

03:29and it's not like that at all.

03:31I feel like in some ways I've been inspiring to a lot of people.

03:36I have a YouTube channel called Becoming Bev

03:39so I get a lot of feedback from the channel.

03:41I do instructions about van life and adventures in van life

03:46and I get a lot of people that are inspired by what I'm doing

03:50and crave that kind of adventure in their lives.

03:56The best thing about van life is the freedom that I feel

04:00and like I'll get questions sometimes like

04:04how can you live in such a small space

04:07and I'll say but have you seen my backyard?

04:10So I feel like my backyard is oceanfront property

04:16or it's a beautiful river like where we're parked here today

04:21or a wooded area or the mountains

04:24or the edge of the Badlands National Park.
