00:00Welcome back to Newswire here on SportsGrid. I feel like I think I did this last week. I'm going to do it again here as we bring in Adam Kaplan. So 51% is what the Twitter X handle tells us is through the NFL offseason. We have reached more than the halfway point. And I think honestly, you get to August, it's here at that point, you know, with the preseason and everything else. So for me, it's just like a couple months, Adam. Like, really? I mean, think about it. I mean, look, training camp, I know that you love it and you go to all of them.
00:27To me, it's, you know, insignificant as far as news and betting and sports is concerned. But we are less than two months for this really becoming real.
00:36Well, a couple things about training camp. First of all, for fantasy, it's huge because you finally get an idea, apparently to OTAs. Or OTAs, you can't touch anyone. There's no physicality. And training camp, guys are in pads. You can tackle if you want. It's physical. You start learning who's going to be starting and who's not. So that's very important for training camp battles.
00:55But this time of year, OTAs, I'm talking to coaches and front office people, correct, over the years. This is the learning part about it. It's not about who stands out. I dismiss that stuff. I always laugh when a running back's doing well. Oh, really? The guy's in a t-shirt and shorts. You can't touch him. He's doing well. That's not exactly breaking news. So everyone should do well in OTAs in terms of looking good.
01:15But it's really the mental part of it, learning and not getting behind. And then you hope that the player builds on the OTAs and it gets a training camp. By the way, the OTAs are done in about a week and a half. So you're right, man. Before we know it, it's going to be late July and we're at training camp.
01:30Yeah, I would agree. All right. So there was one piece of news, I guess, that slipped by me this weekend. So you can fill me in here. The 49ers get Bryce Huff from the Eagles and a third round pick is the trade here.
01:44So, like, it does seem, I got to say, a little bizarre to me that we're getting a late May, June trade, like, kind of out of nowhere here. Fill me in.
01:52Yeah, it was supposed to be a third day pick, which could be, you know, could be a fourth round pick. But the bottom line is, so here's what happened. Let's go to Bryce Huff, then we'll get to the 49ers, who had a lot of interest in the player for a variety of reasons.
02:03So Bryce Huff comes over from the Jets, right? He was a 2020 undrafted free agent out of Memphis. So why was he not drafted? So many, so few teams were interested in Bryce Huff. He was not even invited to the senior ball. So what does that mean?
02:17He's from Mobile, Alabama. That's where the senior ball is, and he's not even invited, okay? So that tells you that he was probably not going to get drafted. He wasn't.
02:26So the Jets signed him. He works his way up. It becomes, to be honest with you, in 2023, probably the NFL's best sub-package rusher, which means best guy coming in on third down as a pass rusher. Did a great job.
02:40He parlayed that in to a three-year, $51 million contract with the Eagles. The first two years of $34 million, fully guaranteed. And boy, he did not get off to a good start with Vic Fangio.
02:51He was playing a scheme he was not familiar with. He was never really a stand-up pass rusher with the Jets. He played it with his hand down under Robert Sala.
03:00The Jets had coached then, who's now with the Niners. We'll get to that in a second. And it just never worked.
03:04He wound up having a wrist injury. Then he had surgery. He came back late in the season. He was a healthy and active in the Super Bowl.
03:12The word around the league was they were trying to trade him, beginning at the combine. They didn't get a trade done before the draft.
03:19They just agreed to one. It'll be official. Now we pass June 1st for cap purposes, and plus he's got to pass the physical with the 49ers.
03:26That's a mere formality. He'll pass it. And the bottom line is, Craig, it didn't work.
03:30They're going to wind up paying him over $24 million for one season, but they're going to get a draft pick.
03:35They didn't have to pay the full $34 million. The Niners are going to pick up the rest of it.
03:39And then the guarantee money's out after the season. But going to the 49ers, he most likely will be a backup there.
03:47He'll make around $7 million from them. The Eagles are picking up the rest of it for the season.
03:51But the bottom line is, they need a depth behind Nick Bosa.
03:55Mike Hill-Williams is the first-round pick, but they have very little depth.
03:58And he's back. Not only is he back with Robert Salick, he's playing in that wide nine where the ends get up the field.
04:05That's how he starred with the Jets in that wide nine.
04:09Before we go, you know, Jalen Ramsey, still a good player, not a great player, but a lot of money.
04:15Dolphins trying to clear that, Adam. I sense that one way or the other, he won't be a Dolphin.
04:19He'll be on another team, right? Like this is the posturing until probably they have to.
04:23I mean, I know right now it doesn't seem like they're going to cut him, but I mean, they will if they don't trade him, right?
04:30Well, they're going to trade him. Yeah, they have no plans to cut him. Trust me.
04:33It's over $25 million, I fully guarantee that they owe him.
04:36The Rams won him. They had to get past June 1st for cap purposes.
04:40Now it's a – I never say anything's easy, but it's easier to facilitate a trade.
04:44I expect this to get done. It could happen any time this week.
04:47It could happen closer to training camp.
04:49Both sides have agreed he's going to move on. It didn't work.
04:52Why, though, the question was, and a lot of people in the league have it,
04:56why did the Dolphins extend his contract last fall and are going to trade him less than a year later?
05:02That's just not good management, but they're going to get something back for him.
05:05They're going to clear some cash, but sometimes you've just got to move on,
05:08just like the Eagles did and the Dolphins are going to do with Jalen Ramsey.
05:1120 seconds. Tyreek Hill is a Dolphin, first game of the season. Yes or no?
05:17Yes, because the contract, it's just too rich to trade right now.
