00:00Welcome back to Newswire here on SportsGrid. Great to have
00:06SportsGrid NFL insider Adam Kaplan back with us here on the
00:09show. He's gonna be super busy over the next month traveling
00:13all across the country doing his training camp tour, but we're
00:16fortunate enough to get him on one of the easier stops right
00:19in his backyard. The Philadelphia Eagles. It is
00:22great Adam to see you again. It's like when seeing I see you
00:25here on our network and I see you here on the show. I know
00:27it's almost time for football season. Thanks again for coming
00:30on. Yeah, you're right. It's that time of year. I'm gonna be
00:35away for a better part of three or four weeks. As you said, it
00:38started with my hometown Eagles in terms of that's the team
00:41that's here and then of course, I see the Giants and Jets and
00:44see your Dolphins later this week in Miami. I look forward
00:47to that, but yeah, it it's really been interesting with
00:49the Eagles Greg because two years ago, they shot the world
00:53made the Super Bowl probably had the best team in the
00:54National Football League. They didn't beat the Chiefs. I get
00:57it. It didn't happen. I know they were really dejected within
01:00the within the organization, but they took a step back last
01:03season after choking that that big lead ten and one. What a
01:06great record best record in the National Football League then
01:08losing six out of seven and that culminated with two
01:12coordinators on offensive defense and really a new look
01:14team to be honest with you. Yeah, and I and I think you
01:17know, as always, Howie very busy on Howie Roseman very busy
01:21on draft day making all kinds of changes to the team and
01:25you're right Adam. It's it's like it's hard to remember
01:28every NFL season, but that's the one thing I do remember
01:30about the Eagles is thinking halfway through. They're
01:32probably going to win the Super Bowl or get there and it
01:34was like nowhere close. I was just so stunned at their
01:37complete collapse, but they are essentially running it back as
01:41far as the coaching staff is concerned. Let's take a look at
01:44some of the additions that they've added to the team this
01:47year and the biggest one is the biggest name. But in this day
01:51and age Adam of the NFL, I mean if we were doing this 10 years
01:54ago, it would definitely would be Saquon Barkley, but this
01:57day and age with running backs. I don't think it's fair to say
02:00that you probably have a much better read on this. You know
02:03team than I do as far as where they're headed fantasy
02:06purposes. Of course, Saquon Barkley is a big name, but what
02:08about reality? How do how do we separate that? Yeah. So let's
02:12look at Barkley and in Thursday's practice at Lincoln
02:14Financial Stadium, Craig, I thought it was really
02:16interesting because with Kellen Moore and I've studied
02:18Kellen Moore. He's a new offensive coordinator and I've
02:20talked to people who work with him. The backs catch the
02:23football. Tony Pollard caught the ball very well for the
02:25Cowboys when Kellen was there and when you really look at it,
02:28Barkley has caught a lot of passes in training camp. We
02:31know we saw this last summer with a different play caller
02:34and Brian Johnson is now with Washington with Deandre Swift
02:37and Swift wind up not catching a lot of passes in the regular
02:39season, but Kellen Moore and running backs, the backs catch
02:43the football. So Barkley is a good, but you saw that chart up
02:46there. This is a big story with a big guy. I I this is this.
02:50This has been like the stunner of their offseason, Craig, but
02:53Kai Bacton is not currently lining up a tackle, not left
02:56tackle at right tackle. So he'd line up earlier in training
02:59camp at right tackle. He's been lining up at right guard. He
03:02started actually their OTAs when they after he signed after
03:05the draft, Craig. At guard, it's been he's guys never played
03:09guard in his life. So Jeff Stoutland, their offensive line
03:12coach is really really good. One of the best of the National
03:13Football League. He thinks he could play it. I can tell you
03:16this without it without a doubt. If Bacton lines up week
03:19one in San in San Paolo against the Packers, if he lines up at
03:23right guard, they will have the biggest offensive line in NFL
03:26history. They have three guys six seven or taller three guys
03:30probably 340 or bigger one guy Jordan Milata who's 375 380.
03:36Now again, let's not run with it here. Tyler Steen was hand
03:39picked by the Eagles to play right guard. Unfortunately,
03:42he's dealing with an ankle injury, but Bacton's been an
03:44amazing story one that no one saw coming, but right now he's
03:47been lining up at guard. Yeah, I mean really, I mean his
03:51career has gone up and down constantly in and out injuries
03:54everything else. Maybe this is the new lease on life with the
03:56Eagles and you know the Eagles wasted no time on draft day
03:59reshaping that defense Adam and and look the offense was
04:02capable down the stretch, but the defense just completely
04:05fell apart. They drafted a cornerback a defensive lineman
04:08and an outside linebacker with their first second and third
04:11round picks and even took a linebacker in the fifth round as
04:14well. I think everyone is familiar with Quentin Mitchell
04:16and he was drafted, but educate us Adam beyond that who the
04:20impact players were from that draft. Yeah, and Craig Cooper
04:22Dejean, unfortunately, who's their second round pick out of
04:25Iowa to play corner and safety. He suffered a hamstring injury
04:29away from the team, so he's on the active non football injury
04:31list. They feel like he can be back in the middle of August
04:35here, but him not getting valuable reps under Vic Fangio,
04:38their new defensive coordinator that that's a shame because
04:41the Eagles had a first round grade on on this player Dejean
04:44and he's a multiple position player. You can also return
04:47punts or kicks really big time athlete mentioned Mitchell.
04:50Now this is again. I get it's training camp. You never know
04:53what's going to happen the regular season. We turn to
04:55defense. Mitchell has been lining up inside a lot. This is
04:59not something that he did a lot in college, but to get him on
05:01the field early, they've lined him up as a nickel slot corner.
05:04He's done a very good job watching him go up against AJ
05:07Brown and practiced it's been kind of surprising what these
05:09coaches have done, but again, yes, Nick Sirianni is back, but
05:13he's got two new coordinators and it certainly shows. Yeah,
05:16and and I think that you mentioned Nick Sirianni, who
05:19was the darling of of coaches in the NFL just 2 years ago,
05:22but in this what have you done for me lately sport as the
05:25season collapsed last year and went to an end. There was that
05:27pause at the end of the season Adam for about a day or two
05:30where we didn't know if Sirianni would be back now. I
05:34think it's fair to say that Howie Roseman has proven
05:37everything that he possibly can in the NFL. So you know he's
05:39going to be making that final decision. They're bringing
05:41Sirianni back again. I would ask you Adam going into the
05:45upcoming NFL season. Certainly Sala with the Jets has pressure
05:48too, but Sirianni has gotta be up there as far as having to at
05:52least not fall apart like they did last year. Yeah, I would
05:55put him. I'll put Nick Sirianni, Doug Peterson, Robert
05:58Sala. You know they all have to prove themselves with coaches.
06:00Yes, Nick Sirianni, the Eagles head coach has been to the
06:03playoffs all three years. He's been the head coach, but
06:06historic collapse Doug Peterson. As I said with
06:09Burrell, they gotta win this division. They had a the
06:12Jaguars choke down the stretch where he's got pressure on
06:14him. You're absolutely right. Nick Sirianni has a ton of
06:17pressure on him and by the way, they've had a good offseason
06:19Eagles. They've had a lot of new players as you saw in those
06:21charts. Alright. Finally, their season win total look the
06:25Eagles are going to be really good. I know that it's just
06:27it's not going to be good enough as you mentioned.
06:29They'll probably win 910 11 games get to the postseason,
06:32but Adam over on FanDuel. That's where the slant is is
06:35about 11. I mean minus 172 yikes like I don't even know
06:40that I'm interested in doing anything like that. I may try
06:42to find 11 somewhere else. Do they come close to that over
06:46under or does that seem about right to you? I like the over
06:49two years ago. I have them at fourteen and three. I did get
06:51that one right. It's not easy to pick those win totals. I do
06:54like slightly the over ten and a half because they are the
06:57cream of the crop of that division and by the way, no
06:59one's had it back to back divisional championship of the
07:02NFC since 2004 when the Eagles were in the midst of winning
07:05four divisions in a row. Alright. Thanks Adam for
07:08coming on. Good luck with the tour. We'll catch up when you
07:10get back.
