How has immigration enforcement in the EU evolved over the past year?

Over 120,000 non-EU nationals were refused entry in 2024, a number that has barely moved since the pandemic, while voluntary and forced returns are up 20%.

00:00How has immigration enforcement in the EU evolved over the past year?
00:08In 2024, the majority of third-country nationals who were refused entry in the EU
00:14were through the bloc's external land borders.
00:17This was followed by refusals at hair borders at 39.8% and at sea borders at 3.4%.
00:24The highest number of individuals denied entry into the EU were Ukrainians, Albanians and Moldovans.
00:31Almost 50% of the refusals of entry were made due to no explanation for the purpose of the visit or conditions of stay
00:38and absence of a valid visa or residence permit.
00:41Between 2023 and 2024, there was a 27.4% decrease in the number of third-country nationals found to be illegally present in the EU.
00:51Germany, France and Italy accounted for 54.4% of all third-country nationals identified as being illegally present.
00:59On the other hand, there was a substantial decrease in the number of third-country nationals found to be illegally present
01:06in Slovakia, Latvia, Hungary, Austria and Croatia.
01:10This led to nearly 255,000 fewer persons apprehended in these five countries compared to the previous year.
01:19In 2024, 53.8% of returns to third countries represented voluntary returns, while 46.2% were forced returns.
