00:00First-time asylum applications in the EU went down in 2024.

00:09The latest Eurostat data says that first-time asylum applications decreased by 13% compared to 2023,

00:19totaling 912,000.

00:22Most of them, 25%, were registered in Germany.

00:26The second highest rate was reported in Spain, 18%, followed by Italy, 17%, France and Greece.

00:36Cyprus, however, faced the highest pressure with 7.2 first-time applicants per 1,000 people.

00:45The EU average is 2.

00:47Cyprus was followed by Greece with 6.6, Ireland and Spain, 3.4 each,

00:54and Luxembourg with 3.2.

00:57Syrians are still the largest group seeking asylum,

01:01accounting for 148,000 first-time applications or 16% of the EU's total.

01:11Venezuelans were next with nearly 73,000 applications,

01:16followed by Afghans with just over 72,000.

01:20Applications also included more than 36,000 unaccompanied minors,

01:26most of them from Syria, Afghanistan and Egypt.
