00:00Donald Trump will soon declare Syria as a state that does not sponsor terrorism.
00:07And that's according to America's new special envoy to the Middle Eastern country.
00:11Clearly forgetting that the interim government has a rather dark past.
00:16Thomas Barak says that the move will supposedly help Washington combat terror.
00:23Meeting President al-Shara in the presidential palace
00:26to launch a new phase in our relationship based on mutual respect and mutual interests.
00:31While the stars and stripes fly again in the Damascus sky,
00:35is a testament to the power of Trump's vision
00:37and Rubio's decisive execution of steps to allow Syria and the region to determine their own future.
00:44It is also a commitment to the integrity of America's primary objective,
00:47the enduring defeat of ISIS.
00:49The thaw in relationship between Washington and, well, now Damascus,
00:53it has been quite spectacular.
00:55I mean, Donald Trump has already met the new president of Free Syria, or as they call it.
01:04They have already promised to lift sanctions.
01:07And in general, right now, according to the ambassador, to the American ambassador to Syria,
01:12well, the United States is ready to strike Syria out of their list of bad guys
01:17and strike them out from the list of states that sponsor terrorists.
01:23And that's after a dude who has been leading the al-Nusra front,
01:26rebranded as the Hayat Pahrir al-Sham, for years, literally.
01:31But right now, if you were to listen to Donald Trump,
01:34that would be, well, he has nothing but praise for the guy.
01:38How did you find the Syrian president?
01:40Great.
01:41Right.
01:42I think very good.
01:43Young, attractive guy.
01:45Tough guy.
01:46You know, strong pass.
01:48Very strong pass fighter.
01:50Does that hurt you?
01:51But he's got a real shot at pulling it together.
01:55I spoke with President Erdogan, who I'm very friendly with him.
01:59He feels he's got a shot.
02:02Unbelievable.
02:03He's a really attractive guy.
02:06He's such an attractive guy.
02:07He's a strong fighter.
02:10This guy is formerly Al-Qaeda, HTS, links to ISIS.
02:15I don't understand any American president describing this man like that.
02:19Is Jelani as great as Trump says?
02:22Well, it depends on which perspective you look at it from, I guess.
02:26And to understand this, we have to go way, way back to back to 2003.
02:30That's when Jelani's, well, political career began.
02:35And that's when he traveled to Iraq shortly before the American invasion, joined Al-Qaeda
02:40in Iraq, one of its most brutal and, well, one of its most radical offshoots and, well,
02:49just departments, if I may say so.
02:52Basically, that variant of Al-Qaeda that was festering in Iraq, it was among some of the
02:58worst, and it shared some of the worst and most radical and extremist ideas.
03:01In fact, Jelani, back then, he ended up, his support and his active fighting against
03:08American troops in Iraq.
03:10He, over that, he served time in prison.
03:13And he openly, he makes no secret, and he's not denying his involvement in the physical
03:20fight against the American troops in Iraq.
03:22The leader, the very infamous leader of ISIL, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the man who pretty much
03:39the whole world tried to hunt him down, he handpicked Jelani to travel to Syria.
03:46Of course, if you were to read some of the, some of the modern, more of a newer assessments
03:51of Jelani's days back then, they would have you and try to have you believe that he had
03:58a sort of a fall, had a falling out with ISIL, with Al-Qaeda, that he dropped all ties with
04:04them.
04:04In fact, he became the head of the al-Nusra Front, which is, was an Al-Qaeda offshoot back
04:10in the time.
04:11And they began the infighting between jihadi groups.
04:14Those were just different flavors of jihadism, who really just, they couldn't really agree
04:20on how they would discriminate and exterminate their religious and political opponents.
04:26But clearly he's a changed man, this Jelani guy.
04:29You know, if you've been involved in choreographing suicide bombings or doing IED attacks across
04:34the Middle East, but you want to be born again, all you've got to do is get a Western suit
04:37in a haircut and you're good to go because the American president says, you're so sexy
04:41now, you're so handsome.
04:42Apparently Jelani is a changed man.
04:45Well, it works for him, doesn't it?
04:47Minorities and especially the Alawite minority, they have felt the full force of Jelani's
04:53governance in Syria from Damascus.
04:56And I mean, these pictures, they really, they speak for themselves.
04:59Yeah.
05:07There was a city in Syria called Banias.
05:15It was half sunny, half Alawite.
05:17And now it is half sunny and half dead.
05:20Brutal pictures there and true, totally heart-wrenching and really viewer discretion is advised here.
05:40And if you were to listen to other minorities, like the Druze minority in Syria, they have
05:45been, they have been literally taking up arms and trying to defend their homes with, you
05:52know, bearing their own arms.
05:54This is how far they were ready to go when they learned that now Al-Nusra and Jelani and
05:59well, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rather, and a direct Al-Qaeda descendant is now in power
06:06in Syria, but it is evident based on what Turkey has been saying and what the United
06:11States have been saying that, well, Jelani now is in a very good place and there could
06:17be, there could be a future for him envisioned in Washington.
06:22Now, in one of the most controversial moves in the U.S. foreign policy in decades, Donald
06:28Trump recently announced plans to lift all sanctions on Syria, some of which have been
06:33in place since the 80s.
06:36Now, the president claimed that in return, Damascus pledged to prevent a resurgence of
06:41Islamic State.
06:42Now, for a deep dive into just what it could mean and where it could all go, you can head
