AccuWeather's long-range expert Joe Lundberg was live on the AccuWeather Network on May 30 with a look at what's in store for the United States in the first week of June.
Transcript
00:00Joining me right now is AccuWeather, long-range expert, meteorologist Joe Lumberg.
00:03The wet weather that we highlighted for this week, last week, from Texas to the southeast
00:09wasn't the only thing that we were keeping an eye on, Joe.
00:13No, it wasn't.
00:13Let's roll the tape.
00:16Joe, that dip in the jet stream across the central U.S. starts to head toward the coast
00:20over the weekend, and then you have to wonder, do we get a storm to form along the east coast
00:26late next week?
00:27Yeah, and I think that that's going to be very much tied to more disturbances trying
00:31to come down from the northwest in this general fashion.
00:34Does it pick this up, pull it northeastered into a storm system that would mean more rain
00:39for these areas, or does it push it out to sea?
00:43Regardless, there's going to be another shot of cool air that comes in behind this feature
00:46for the end of next week and the start of June.
00:51And, of course, the answer is, Joe, we do have that coastal storm with more rain.
00:56Yeah, indeed we do.
00:58That thing's going to come out of Kentucky, and it's going to produce a lot of rain across
01:01portions of the mid-Atlantic and up into New England over the next 36 hours.
01:06All right, what are the three things to know about next week?
01:08Well, as we take a look at it, we're going to see warmer weather early next week, and
01:12then maybe later in the week, as a front presses in from the north and west, you could deal
01:16with some thunderstorms.
01:17That severe weather threat is really going to strike early to midweek from Texas up into
01:21the Midwest, and we're going to keep an eye on the tropics next weekend and beyond, believe
01:25it or not.
01:26Take a look at the U.S. Drought Monitor.
01:28That's one thing I want to focus in on.
01:30There's still some areas here in the Mid-Atlantic that have abnormally dry to moderate drought
01:35conditions.
01:35This storm system over the next 36 hours, Bernie, I think, should wipe out most of this.
01:40There could be one to two inches of rain in that particular area as this storm moves
01:44on through tonight and early tomorrow.
01:45You know, it's interesting because we highlighted from Texas to the southeast what was going
01:49to be a wet week, and you'll notice from Texas to the southeast, virtually no drought
01:53good shape, except Florida, where we've been getting some rains, and that was something else
01:59that you guys highlighted in the Long Range team, that there would be some beneficial rains
02:04coming to Florida.
02:05There would be, and eventually you're going to have to start dealing with the tropics.
02:08We'll touch on that point in a moment.
02:09Here's the general overview of next week, and it's probably a little different than I was looking
02:13at a couple of days ago.
02:14It does look like there's going to be a trough that comes in and through the west early
02:17next week, but it probably comes in two pieces.
02:21One piece comes through.
02:22A second piece comes around the bend.
02:24Regardless of how it plays out, it's going to cause some severe weather in the nation's
02:29midsection early to midweek, Monday, Tuesday, and into Wednesday.
02:32You're going to finally start to pull a lot of tropical moisture up from the Gulf of America
02:36into the nation's midsection.
02:38I think that that's going to be the fuel for those thunderstorms.
02:40Meanwhile, as this ridge develops downstream, you're going to see warmer weather,
02:44especially away from the coast through the early and midweek period.
02:48Yeah, and you know, this is a part of the country, Joe, that's been, boy, we've had a lot
02:51of severe weather this year.
02:53And, you know, we're starting to get into the tail end of the height of the severe weather
02:59season.
03:00That's true.
03:01But, you know, unfortunately, the pattern remains very amplified.
03:03So this is the area that we're targeting late Monday night, Tuesday, and into Wednesday.
03:08And I think it doesn't end there.
03:09I think that this front continues to progress eastward in areas downstream into the Ohio Valley,
03:14Tennessee Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast have to deal with it late next week.
03:18AccuWeather long-range expert meteorologist Joe Lumber.
03:20Joe will be back with us at 9.15.
03:23Joe, thanks for joining us here.
03:24You're welcome.
03:24On AccuWeather Early.
