00:00Look up, look down, look all around. Up in the air, or on the ground. Come for a walk, come for a ride. There's so much to see, so come outside.
00:28We stand in the streets, all in a row. When it starts to get dark, we're ready to go. All through the night, we shine, beam and glow. What are we? We're street lamps.
00:58Look at the lights, Pippin. Aren't they pretty? Hello, my dears. We've got a wonderful view of the street lights, shining and twinkling below us.
01:13We've been shopping with my sister Edie. She's so slow, it took all day. Nearly home now, Pippin.
01:24.
01:25.
01:29.
01:33.
01:41.
01:42Pippin! Wait for me!
02:12Oh no! The bulb's worn out. They've got a torch somewhere. Oh! Oh, what's that? Oh, dear. Oops! Pippin, go and find the torch before I do any more damage.
02:42Oh, good! You've got it. Now, you hold it for me. I've got a new bulb here somewhere. Ah, here it is.
03:01Hold the torch still, Pippin. I can't see what I'm doing. Now, take out the old bulb and put in the new one.
03:23That's better. Now, we can see where we're going. Oh. Thank you, Pippin. Oh, dear. What'd it do?
03:45What's the matter, Pippin?
04:14Oh, you want your evening walk, don't you? It was a bit late, but... Oh, come on, then. It won't take long.
04:29Oh, come on, then, Pippin.
04:59Oh! What was that? A bag of rubbish. I didn't see it in the dark. Oh dear. The street lamp
05:19isn't on. We'd better go very carefully, Pippin. I'll report it in the morning.
05:29Shhh!
05:59One's been hit. A lorry did that. But it didn't fall down. See them by the side of the motorway. All in a line they stand, silent and tall. Short ones too. We need them all. Our street lamps.
06:11Good morning, Pippin.
06:18Short ones too. We need them all. Our street lamps.
06:25Good morning, Pippin.
06:32Rise and shine.
06:35Hello. Is that the council?
06:39I'd like to report a street lamp in a case you're rogue that isn't working. It's near the corner of Wood Street.
06:50Right. Thank you. Goodbye.
06:59Come on, Pippin. We've got a busy day today.
07:05First we'll go to the library. Then the dry cleaners. And I must pick up those shoes from the menders.
07:12Oh, look. They've come to repair that lamp.
07:27Hello, Dave. Hello, Uncle Mabel.
07:42It was me who reported the lamp. It wasn't working last night and I nearly fell over in the dark.
07:48Well, we'll soon get it going again.
07:54He's checking the electricity. The lamp post has wires in it which carry electricity from cables under the ground.
08:04If ever you see the side of a lamp post open like this, don't touch it.
08:12Electricity is very dangerous.
08:18That's all working. So I'll go up and check the lamp.
08:21Can I go with you?
08:22Yes, of course.
08:24You stay here, Pippin. Stay on the pavement now.
08:48It could be that the lamp's worn out. Just like my bulb at home.
08:59So Dave's putting a new one in.
09:08Have you ever wondered who turns the street lamps on?
09:11This little sensor does. It can tell when it's getting dark.
09:19We're going to play a trick on it to find out whether the lamp's working now.
09:24Cover it up. It'll think it's gone dark and turn the lamp on.
09:29It takes a little while to warm up.
09:32Are you alright, Pippin?
09:36Look, it's working.
09:41It's working.
09:44So it did need a new bulb.
09:48Now we know it's working, we can take the cover off so the sensor can see daylight and it'll turn the lamp off again.
09:57Isn't it clever?
10:00Street lamps haven't always worked like this.
10:03Oh, no.
10:04Years ago, they used gas instead of electricity.
10:08And there were people whose job it was to go round lighting them one by one.
10:14They were called lamp lighters.
10:17I know a story about one of them.
10:19A hundred years ago, there lived a lamp lighter and his son, Albert.
10:26Every evening, as it began to get dark, Albert would play while his father lit all the lamps in the town.
10:34One day, Albert's father wasn't very well.
10:39He worried about the lamps.
10:42Who would turn them on?
10:44If they weren't lit, people might hurt themselves in the dark.
10:49I can light them, said Albert.
10:52I know what to do.
10:54He picked up a pole which his father used to light the lamps.
10:59It was called a torch.
11:02And then off he went.
11:04Now Albert was much shorter than his father.
11:08And even though the torch was on a long pole, he couldn't reach the lamp.
11:14So he went home to fetch a ladder.
11:16He picked up the heavy ladder and the torch and carried them both back to the lamp.
11:23He climbed the ladder and held the torch up to the lamp.
11:28But nothing happened.
11:30Then he remembered a pole with a hook on it.
11:36So he went home to fetch it.
11:39He picked up the pole, the heavy ladder, and the torch, and made his way back to the lamp.
11:46He climbed the ladder and tried again.
11:51He hooked the pole round a chain and pulled it to turn on the gas.
11:57Then he lit the gas with the torch and the lamp began to shine brightly.
12:03Done it, said Albert.
12:07All night he struggled with the heavy ladder, the pole, and the torch.
12:14Just as Albert had finished lighting all the street lamps, the sun came up and it was morning.
12:21Now all he had to do was put them all out again.
12:27Oh, what a busy day. I'm glad to get home.
12:36Oh, Pippin, look.
12:39The street lamps working.
12:42So I won't fall over the rubbish bag, which I notice is still there.
12:46Ah, my new bulbs working well.
13:06We don't need the torch anymore, Pippin.
13:09Where are you going?
13:10Oh, you're putting it away.
13:18Thank you, Pippin.
13:20You are a clever dog.
13:40Bye.
13:54Bye.
