King Charles III opened Canada’s new parliamentary session with a rare “speech from the throne”—only the third such address by a reigning monarch in Canadian history. In a powerful and symbolic gesture, the King began with a land acknowledgement, honoring the Algonquin and Anishinaabeg peoples, and called for deeper understanding and action on truth and reconciliation. It was his 20th visit to Canada, but his first as King. The ceremony blended Commonwealth traditions with Indigenous representation unique to Canada’s identity.

00:00I would like to acknowledge that we are gathered on the unceded territory of the Algonquin and the

00:17While continuing to deepen my own understanding, it is my great hope that in each of your communities
00:24and collectively as a country. Honourable Senators, members of the House of Commons,
00:33it is with a deep sense of pride and pleasure that my wife and I join you here today as we witness
00:41Canadians coming together in a renewed sense of national pride, unity and hope. I would like to

01:01This land acknowledgement is a recognition of shared history as a nation.
01:07While continuing to deepen my own understanding, it is my great hope that in each of your communities
01:15and collectively as a country, a path is found toward truth and reconciliation in both word and deed.
01:27This is my 20th visit to Canada, spread over the course of more than half a century,
01:34country and my first as sovereign. As I've said before, every time I come to Canada,
01:44a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream and from there straight to my heart.
01:50I've always had the greatest admiration for Canada's unique identity, which is recognised across the world
02:02for bravery and sacrifice in defence of national values and for the diversity and kindness of Canadians.
02:10To the First Nations, Inuit and Miti peoples, you have welcomed my family and myself to your traditional lands
02:23with great warmth and hospitality, for which I am humbly grateful.
02:28This year, we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day. On Juneau Beach, at Dieppe, on the Somme,
02:44at Beaumont-Amelle, at Ypres, and on Vimy Ridge. At those places and many others, forever etched into our memories,
02:55Canadians fought and died alongside our closest allies.
