00:00The studio, delighted to say, by the former Attorney-General, Sir Michael Ellis.
00:05It's delighted to have you. I can believe you can see live pictures on our screens here now.
00:09Of course, the world-famous Mount is there, resplendent in their red jackets.
00:14And there we have the King and Queen.
00:17Absolutely, the King and Queen. Hello, Martin.
00:19And this is a very special and actually historic event.
00:23You can see them in the state land aisle there.
00:26Now, that's a carriage that actually began its life in Australia, as it happens.
00:31It was then bought by the Governor-General of Canada in 1911 from the Australians
00:38and gifted to Canada in perpetuity.
00:42And it's not the first time that the King has been in that carriage,
00:46but they've just arrived now, having been escorted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
00:51It's 14 police officers, they are, on horseback, 14 in front and 14 behind.
00:58And they've just brought them to the Senate of Canada building.
01:01And the Senate of Canada building actually is a temporary house for the upper chamber in Canada
01:10because it's a former railway station.
01:12They are undergoing repairs at the moment with their main Parliament building.
01:18He appears to have been greeted there by Black Rod,
01:21the Canadian equivalent of our Black Rod here in Parliament.
01:26And he's now standing on a dais where he's going to take a salute, I think.
01:31Chris?
01:31Michael, as I've seen many state opens to Parliament here,
01:34why is the King of Canada not wearing a crown?
01:37Well, I think that is, it's interesting to see that if you look at the old footage from 1957
01:44and also from 1977, crowns weren't worn then either.
01:49So, although Prince Philip was in military uniform in 1977, certainly, and I think in 57 too,
01:57but here they've decided clearly that a lounge suit is appropriate.
02:03Although I think we can see His Majesty wearing Canadian honours there
02:07while the National Anthem is being played.
02:11And this court joy to arrive, of course, the inspection of the guard.
02:15You can hear in the background there, Sir Michael, the gun, salute.
02:19It's wonderful to see, actually, an example of a Commonwealth nation saying,
02:25actually, we love the Commonwealth, we love the King.
02:28Come hither.
02:30Absolutely, Martin.
02:30We hear so much there, but let's have a moment to leave the Commonwealth.
02:34Let's have a listen here.
