Caption: Merseyside Police describes the circumstances that led to 50 people being injured after a car drove into a Liverpool FC victory parade hitting several pedestrians. Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims says it is believed that the car “was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street after the road-block was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack”. 00:00The atmosphere was electric but sadly just after 6pm the joy of the day dissipated quickly
00:07after more than 50 people were injured when a car collided with people gathered on Water Street.
00:15It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car involved in this incident was able to follow
00:22an ambulance onto Water Street after the roadblock was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew
00:29could attend to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack.
00:34There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place
00:39and as we've previously stated the incident is not being treated as terrorism.
00:45I have no doubt regarding the impact that this appalling incident has had on those who are injured,
00:52their family and friends and for those who witnessed the incident unfolding in front of them.
00:58I want to reassure the public of Merseyside that detectives are making significant progress
01:03as we seek to establish the full circumstances that led to this awful incident
01:08and bring the person responsible to justice.
01:11We have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of attempted murder,
01:18dangerous driving offences and driving whilst unfit through drugs.
01:22He remains in custody where he is being interviewed.
