Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed his Asean counterparts on Monday (May 26) at the start of the 46th summit in Kuala Lumpur.

Southeast Asia's leaders will try again to bring Myanmar's military government into talks to end a protracted civil war and will seek ways to offset global trade uncertainty from US President Donald Trump's tariff threats.

00:00Southeast Asian leaders gathered in the Malaysian capital on Monday to deliberate on regional
00:07matters at the 46th ASEAN Summit and related summits.
00:11Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed his foreign counterparts at a special podium
00:16located at the entrance of the KL Convention Center.
00:20The leaders were Timor-Leste Prime Minister K.
00:23Rala Zanana Guzmau, Thailand Prime Minister Paitong Tharn Shinawat, Singapore Prime Minister
00:29Lawrence Wong, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto,
00:36Laos Prime Minister Sonsai Sipandon, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Vietnam Prime
00:43Minister Pham Minh Chin, and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
00:47Anwar delivered his opening remarks followed by a closed-door retreat session.
00:51We are thankful for the spirit of centrality and the fraternity among ASEAN member states
00:56in being able to come together to forge a common front in dealing with these challenges,
01:02including the recent initiative or pronouncement on unilateral tariffs in the United States.
01:12He added that Malaysia, this year's ASEAN chair, would continue speaking separately to
01:18Myanmar's military junta and its armed opposition groups to try to foster direct talks between
01:23the warring sides.
01:24As for Myanmar, we have been able to take positive steps within the formation of an informal advisory
01:31group for Malaysia, the ASEAN chair for 2025.
01:36I'm going to thank all leaders for giving this tacit approval for the setting up of this informal
01:45group under former Prime Minister Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra.
01:48I strongly believe in the fortitude and staying power of ASEAN to withstand the heat winds and
02:11weather the storms of the challenges and ascendancies facing us.
02:14The highlight of the 46th summit on Monday would be the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration
02:20on ASEAN 2045, our shared future, a strategic milestone that will shape the next phase of
02:28community building.
02:29ASEAN leaders are expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Tuesday, along with counterparts
02:35from Middle East countries.
