00:00This policy includes sex offenders and domestic abusers being released early.
00:06This is a little bit of where this backlash is coming from.
00:10How will the government actually guarantee safety in the community?
00:14Because that would be frightening, Shane, as you said, for the victims.
00:18Yeah, I mean, in short, they can't.
00:20There can't be any guarantees there.
00:22And, yeah, especially for victims who are most likely to be female.
00:26The only way to protect the community from sex offenders, and it really depends if you believe that they can be rehabilitated.
00:37But chemical castration, it only works for as long as the medication is taken.
00:43So there's so many aspects around this.
00:46So, first of all, you're trusting that the person is taking the medicine on a regular basis.
00:51And secondly, there has been research into the use of these drugs.
00:58And the research, it's still quite small, to be honest.
01:03But it said that it's only really effective when done with psychotherapy as well, quite intense psychotherapy.
01:13So, again, this is where the can they be rehabilitated kind of question comes in.
