Remembering George Floyd: 5-year anniversary events
Transcript
00:00Well, this Sunday marks five years since George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police.
00:05We know several events are planned this weekend.
00:07One, in fact, set to begin really any minute.
00:09Saquon joins us live at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis with more on what to expect the next couple of days.
00:15Good morning.
00:16Hey, good morning to you.
00:17Yeah, five years ago, this intersection here at 38th and Chicago forever changed.
00:21When George Floyd was murdered at the hands of Minneapolis police,
00:25everyone around the world watched as this area turned into the site of protests and unrest.
00:29Before turning into what it is today, of course, a sacred memorial, a space to reflect and remember.
00:35As you mentioned there, though, Kelly, there are several events that are happening.
00:38In fact, I want to take you live to the first remembrance event that's happening right now.
00:43It's happening at Minneapolis City Hall.
00:45And if you take a live look there at the rotunda, you can see there are leaders and a bunch of other people
00:50starting to gather here for prayer in a shared moment of reflection and unity.
00:55This event is supposed to kick off at 8 o'clock, so it's supposed to happen two minutes ago.
01:00I'm sure this will be happening just about any second at this point.
01:03Again, this is a live look for you at City Hall for prayer.
01:07Back here at George Floyd Square, though, we have seen people from all over the world stop by George Floyd Square in the last couple of years.
01:13In fact, I'll step out of the way here as we give you a closer look at what the site looks like today.
01:17We saw even as early as about 6 o'clock this morning, maybe even just a little bit before, a woman dropping off fresh flowers.
01:24She was praying here at this memorial just outside of what is now, of course, Unity Foods.
01:30But you can see murals here as well.
01:32That mural of George Floyd, a very iconic one.
01:35We remember a lot of local artists coming out together to make sure people don't forget George Floyd and his story
01:40as activists were fighting for racial justice and policing changes.
01:44And then, of course, to the left a little bit, you can see this iconic fist sculpture right in the middle of George Floyd Square,
01:50a very powerful visual that symbolizes resistance and solidarity.
01:54There are several other events planned at George Floyd Square starting today, including a moment of silence.
02:00That's starting at 1230.
02:02There will also be a two-day festival.
02:04It's being put on by the Rise and Remember organization.
02:07That's happening from 10 to 6 tomorrow and 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
02:10You can also come out here to George Floyd Square for a candlelight visual.
02:14That's going to be from 8 to 9 on Sunday night.
02:17We do have a full list of all the events that are happening throughout the weekend on our website right now.
02:21You can find that on fox9.com.
