Transkrip
00:00The Summer of Gravel begins.
00:30Raleigh Portugal, a classic on the motorsports calendar.
00:35Now, we've been to Portugal many, many times.
00:39Yeah, I mean, Raleigh Portugal is in the calendar since I joined.
00:43I just like the feeling. The states are really nice.
00:47Massive crowds around the stage. It's a big party for a whole week over there.
00:53Last time out was a nightmare for Hyundai.
00:56A complete lack of pace on the new tarmac of Islas Canarias.
01:01But it's on gravel. This championship will be won and lost.
01:06It's the first proper gravel rally of the season.
01:09Predominantly, our season is on gravel.
01:11The key is to have this good base car to start going to the rallies where the pace is really important.
01:18I think, yeah, you need a lot of things to work well, of course.
01:22Starting with the right height, the springs, the damper whirling, the whole bar settings, the pitch, the rig.
01:29We want the setup, you know, where the car is easy to handle and easy to drive.
01:34So it's very, very clear what is needed.
01:37Just to trust the car. You know what it's doing and you have a good grip to go fast.
01:44And yeah, last year's mistake was also a bit stupid one.
01:49So I hope we have learned not to make more stupid mistakes.
02:00Portugal, the first of seven events on gravel, including a first visit to Raleigh Paraguay.
02:06Back on tarmac for Central Europe and Japan and a new finale to the season, Saudi Arabia in November.
02:13The start ramp in front of the former capital, Coimbra.
02:28Elvin Evans' two wins, backed up with another two podiums, gives him a strong 43-point lead in the Drivers' Championship.
02:35Double world champion Kalibov Mpera kickstarted his season with a maximum 35 points on the last rally.
02:41Defending champ, Thierry Neville, third in the driver's standings.
02:45His and his team's struggles will be helped with a car that has pace on gravel.
02:52The first stage, Thursday night's Figuera da Foz super special on the seafront.
02:57Toyota have won all four rallies so far this season and have a 51-point lead in the Manufacturers' Championship.
03:04Hyundai will be hoping to close the gap here, hence for Ford in third.
03:08The big challenge starts out in the forests.
03:12Familiar tracks, unfamiliar tyres as they enter the gravel phase of the season.
03:17Give us a few words on getting through tomorrow. What's it going to take?
03:20A lot of energy, a long day, 13 hours in the car. So, yeah, we'll have to be well awake 7.30 for the first stage after the last one in the evening because day one always crucial in rally on gravel. So, yeah, hopefully we have some decent set-up to have a good face.
03:36Last night was for the fans. It's out on Friday, stages where the real hard work begins. An early start, long day. The first task, survive.
03:46Elvin Evans with an impressive championship lead, but it means he has to start first on the slippery stages for the next couple of rallies at least.
03:57Winner here four years ago, but sure to suffer, cleaning a narrow, grippier and faster line for the cars behind, Elvin could be a second a kilometre slower than his rivals.
04:10But after such a strong start to the campaign, good points rather than victory could be a good weekend's work. And a tidy start.
04:31Cala Rovenpera, Winniherr twice before utterly dominant last time out on the tarmac of Gran Canaria. Playing down prospects of a repeat performance, but promising early signs quicker than Evans by more than two seconds.
04:54World champion Thierry Nabil, Hyundai's only winner here in Portugal, but that was seven years ago. A moment early on, clipping a bank, half a dozen seconds lost.
05:12Not quite the start he was hoping for on the back of that frustrating weekend last time out.
05:17What happened in there just towards the end? Yeah, just, uh, I lost the rear and, uh, maybe I could have done, but there were three, so I stopped that he was and I go again.
05:33Rally Portugal's most successful driver, a record breaking sixth win here a year ago. Being in the shadow of a young Rovenpera last time out, not where the eight time champion is used to being and admitting it will take time to get used to the new hand-cooked tyres on his first gravel event since Chile last year.
05:53OJ not on the base here.
05:57You're 5.9 down.
05:59Slow start or something wrong?
06:01Something wrong.
06:04Setup is not good.
06:05In what way?
06:07Sorry?
06:08The setup's no good.
06:09Way too soft.
06:12What could Oitanak do to bring some renewed confidence back to Hyundai?
06:16A lot as it happened.
06:20The Estonian quickly in the groove on the Portuguese gravel,
06:23taking full advantage of his start position back in fifth.
06:28Tanak posting the quickest stage time.
06:30A long way to go, but an encouraging start.
06:35Unlike Martins Cesks, the Latvian rookie back in the Emsfield Puma,
06:39barely three kilometres into the stage, hitting a rock.
06:46Out of the car to change a wheel.
06:51Early signs of the hazards ahead on these rocky stages.
06:55Teammate Josh McElaine approaching quickly.
06:58Cesks pulling over to let the Irishman through.
07:03Tanak and Hyundai will be relieved to be back on the pace.
07:07He assumes the early rally lead.
07:08Kala Rothenpera just over a second behind.
07:11Championship leader Evans will be happy to be in touch.
07:14He's in third.
07:16So, it's Tanak in the lead.
07:21Great news for Hyundai.
07:23Can they keep the Toyotas behind?
07:28Oh, he's gone!
07:29Just looked like he'd lost it.
07:30This is a disaster.
07:32Just put it in the sky.
07:32Oh, fuck!
07:32We're in Portugal for round five of the World Rally Championship.
07:41Friday, a busy start to the gravel phase of the campaign,
07:45continuing with a triple burst of back-to-back stages.
07:48A cool new livery for the Toyotas for the summer of gravel, painted silver in an attempt to keep the temperature down on board the Yaris.
07:57With two wins and two podiums this year, Elvin Evans has the championship under control in his early days.
08:04Recent rain, damp in places, little surface dust, making his job a little easier.
08:10Meekly does it.
08:11Cala Rova-Pera, second in the championship, second in the rally, second on the road.
08:20But struggling for grip, he said.
08:23Taking another second out of teammate Evans, though.
08:25Thierry Neville, carrying number one on his door as the reigning champion.
08:33Happy with his stage, but losing more time.
08:36Not sure why, he said.
08:37It's a very long day, remember.
08:39All about staying in contention at this early stage.
08:46Sébastien Auger has said you need a good Friday to be in with a chance of winning here.
08:51Not happy with his opening stage.
08:53Dropping another two seconds to teammate Rovan Pera in here.
08:59A better feeling, he said, but still looking for that set-up sweet spot.
09:06Bright start from Oyt Tanak, early rally leader and more encouraging signs here in stage three.
09:12Another stage win.
09:13An early boost for Hayanda after the disappointments of the Canaries.
09:18Oyt content with his morning so far.
09:23I try, I try to enjoy.
09:30Quite okay stages, some surprises with the muddy places, which not dried out as much as we expected.
09:36But, yeah, overall still, the grip quite okay for this station.
09:42And, yeah, we try our best.
09:45Behind Oyt Tanak, teammate Adrian Formeau.
09:47His first season with Hyundai and continuing to make his mark.
09:51Less than a second behind Tanak, overtaking Elvin Evans for third place in the process.
09:56The briefest of stops between stages to check the cars over, swap tyres around and move swiftly to the start for the next in this punishing loop of stages before remote service.
10:13Goish, drier, rougher, more pressure on the tyres.
10:20The front runners sticking with the soft option.
10:23How would they hold up on the rockier terrain?
10:28Adrian Formeau finding his rhythm.
10:30Stage winner, up to second.
10:33More promising signs for Hyundai.
10:34Elvin Evans suffering from road-sweeping duties as anticipated, dropping down to sixth, all part of the downside of being championship leader, opening the road.
10:55Agony for the Welshman.
10:57The sand's compacted with the rain and it's like a glass top, so I don't know if that'll break through, but it's so slippy and so difficult to judge at the moment.
11:12Yeah, I drove quite frustratingly as well, like sliding a lot, but I don't think it was efficient enough, so let's see.
11:21You were punished the most in this one?
11:22I don't know how it's going to evolve, to be honest, it's very difficult to know, but chances are it's going to break up and should improve.
11:30Kalarov and Pera, another struggling for grip.
11:32Argonil much smoother than usual, he said, super slick.
11:36The Finns suggesting he may have made the wrong tyre choice with those softs.
11:46Sebastian Auger beginning to find his form and pace.
11:50Strong through Goish and here again in Argonil.
11:52Second quickest, the six-time Portugal winner, loves these stages, take note.
12:04You don't need to shake your head because it's a very good time, it's quickest through by 7.4.
12:08Ah, okay, I didn't understand, someone is faster by 7.
12:13And it's good to see it's me here.
12:16Rally leader Oip Tanak approaching the end of a strong morning.
12:19Fraction off stage winning pace here, but he'll head back to remote service, satisfied with his I-20's return to competitive pace.
12:28Yeah, we put the hard tyre on this one and it was clearly not the good choice, it was very damp and slippy, so we had to hassle with the car quite a bit.
12:43Enjoying the battle at the front?
12:45Yeah, the battle is intense.
12:47Andrew and Formel very much at home in his I-20, a big push in Argonil, very happy with his tyre choice and why not back-to-back stage wins for the Frenchman.
12:59Hyundai clean sweep this morning, just what they needed after Gran Canaria.
13:10Two stage wins each for Tanak and Formel reflected on the leaderboard.
13:14Auger third, overnight leader Evans, down in sixth.
13:21Rally Portugal, special, spectacular, as always.
13:25Rally Portugal, special, small, small, small, small, small, small...
13:33Heart 5,000 o'clock, special!
13:35...mine in fourth.
13:36The step over 2, right off, straight up.
13:41On the left.
13:45Yeah!
13:50Plan for the remote service?
13:52Eh, some water, some food and go again.
13:55Only a remote service today
13:58A limit of three mechanics
14:00Means no rest for the drivers
14:01They'll have to help prepare the cars
14:03For the afternoon loop
14:04For me the car balance is okay
14:07With the car I'm quite happy
14:09The grip is changing quite a lot
14:11So it's not easy also to make the tire choice
14:13It's really new for all the drivers
14:15We discussed with the engineer
14:18What's the best for the afternoon
14:20For me a very long time
14:21Without driving on gravel
14:22And maybe paying a bit the price
14:25So that I never did any development test
14:28Of these tires
14:28It made my start of the rally complicated
14:31There was 100 cars going through the stages
14:34So we can expect it really rough
14:35With some big wads
14:37Maybe some humidity also coming from the ground
14:40So it's going to be interesting to see the tire choice
14:42For the drivers
14:42So definitely we'll have to do some changing
14:45On the setup
14:46And go for it
14:49Into the afternoon
14:55Suffering in sixth place
14:57Championship leader Elvin Evans
14:5921 seconds off the lead
15:00No need to panic
15:02This is very much a long game
15:04All about getting a good road position
15:06For tomorrow
15:07Also suffering with a slippery road position
15:12Galarov and Pera
15:14Slightly better feeling in the Yaris
15:18On this second pass
15:19But still struggling for grip
15:21Thierry Neville
15:25Outpaced by his teammates this morning
15:27But taking the fight to the competition this afternoon
15:30Improved pace
15:32Faster than the Toyota so far
15:34That's better
15:35You are back now
15:46The quickest Toyota
15:49On unfamiliar hard rubber
15:50Understanding the tires
15:52Fundamental to performance of course
15:53And Sébastien Auger is a quick learner
15:56A first stage win
15:57For the Frenchman
15:58Happy days are here again
16:06For Oik Tanak
16:07Fastest man overall this morning
16:09Now to build on that
16:10Taking two soft tires
16:12Possibly not the wisest choice
16:14He said
16:15On the second abrasive pass
16:17Slower than Séb
16:18In fourth place
16:23Takemoto Katsuta
16:24Looking to capitalise
16:25On a good road position
16:27Starting from
16:27From a grippier 7th place
16:29And making the most of it
16:31Stage winner in the afternoon
16:32Chasing a podium place
16:34More evidence of Hyundai's return to form
16:39Thierry Neville
16:40Far happier in his I-20
16:42And it shows
16:43Turning on the style
16:45On the spectacular mountaintop roads
16:47Defending a slender half-second lead
16:56Going into the afternoon loop
16:57Oik Tanak
16:58Unlike teammate Neville
16:59Not happy on this second pass
17:02Yeah, I don't know
17:05I have a messy struggle
17:07So
17:07With what?
17:10With the guard
17:11Balance again, yeah?
17:13The action continued
17:21Relentless final stage
17:23Of this loop of three
17:24Sébastien Auger
17:26In a tight battle
17:26With teammate Takemoto Katsuta
17:28For the last podium place
17:30Intriguing in-house battle over at Hyundai
17:42On the side too
17:43Oik Tanak said he was struggling on the last stage
17:45The Estonian still holding on to the lead
17:48But only by a fraction of a second
17:50Until
17:51Adrien Formo
17:54Impressive so far
17:56Only eight tenths of a second off the lead
17:58Attacking a series of sweeping uphill bends
18:01Midway through Arganil
18:03Disaster
18:04Oh, he spun!
18:07Oh, he spun!
18:08I was going to say
18:09He just looked like he'd lost it
18:10On the face angle there
18:12This is a disaster
18:13Just when it was so close
18:14I mean
18:14Adrien really needs to get it
18:16Going again
18:18What's going on?
18:18It's taking it
18:19I know, hold on
18:20Has he damaged?
18:21Oh, no!
18:22Has he damaged something here
18:23That we're not seeing on the other side of the car maybe?
18:25Well, maybe he's clipped something on the inside of that corner
18:27Because we thought it was just a spin
18:28Formo sucked into the ditch on the inside
18:32The i20 clearly damaged
18:34Going nowhere
18:36Co-driver Alex Correa
18:40Warning Takemoto Katsuta
18:41To stay in
18:42Safely through
18:44Happy Taka
18:45The fastest Toyota this afternoon
18:47All change in Arganil
18:51Formo's exit
18:52Sees Katsuta move up to second
18:54Behind Tanak
18:55Auger third
18:56The top three covered by less than four seconds
18:58Rovampera
18:59Neville
19:00And Evans
19:01Completing the top six
19:02Coming up

20:33Just feels good
20:34Next loop
20:35We have two new stages
20:36So I don't know
20:37It's going to be quite tricky
20:38Any changes to be made now?
20:41Yeah a few
20:41A few I think
20:42At highest
20:43You're not going to tell me
20:45Are you what they are?
20:46Thank you
20:47Into the final loop
20:50Of three stages
20:51A return to Motagua

21:02For the championship leader
21:04Kalorov and Perra
21:08Will feel pretty much the same
21:09Never totally happy
21:11With the feeling
21:11In his Yaris today
21:12But on the pace
21:13Staying in contention
21:15Also looking forward
21:16To a better start position
21:17Tomorrow
21:18Sebastian Auger
21:21Frustrated
21:22First run through
21:22Mortagua this morning
21:24Rougher and looser
21:25Than he expected
21:26This time round
21:27But happier
21:28All the same
21:28Portugal's record breaker
21:30Nicely poised
21:31To chase another victory
21:33Rally leader
21:37Oytanak continuing to set the pace
21:39Another stage win
21:40To add to his two quickest times
21:42This morning
21:42Extending his lead
21:44To almost seven seconds
21:45In the process
21:46Tricky condition actually
21:53One of the roughest
21:53To see today
21:54Lots of blue stones
21:56And I guess
21:57It's just getting worse
21:58By every go
21:59You must be happy though
22:01With the pace
22:01Yeah
22:02Yeah we try at least
22:03Second place
22:06Takemoto Katsuta
22:07Losing time
22:08On the rough stuff
22:09Conceding more than
22:10Five seconds
22:11To Tanak

22:12Behind team mate
22:14Ogier
22:14Taka
22:15Not happy
22:16Yeah it's bad driving
22:20So I was not happy
22:22My driving was quite bad
22:23Yeah I think
22:25Yeah I was trying to
22:28Avoid the locks
22:28And then
22:29Distable too much
22:31Like a reason
22:32It's not there
22:32And so many mistakes
22:34And quite bad
22:35Elsewhere
22:37The battle of the youngsters
22:39Sammy Piari
22:40Completing Toyota's
22:41Five strong line-up

23:07For Friday honours
23:08With team mate
23:09Josh McAlehan
23:10Overtaking Munster
23:11For eighth place
23:12The day ending
23:16As it started
23:16For Martins Cesks
23:18Another brush
23:18With the terrain
23:19He too
23:24Learning his trade
23:25At this level
23:26A new stage ten
23:33Finishing on a rallycross circuit
23:35With its mix of
23:36Tarmac and gravel
23:37Quickest through
23:43Sebastien Auger
23:44Tanac still leads
23:525.8 seconds ahead of Auger
