00:00A stunning victory in Siena not so long ago.
00:02If he does a good time trial here, we'll really know that Wout Venat is back.
00:05In the meantime, though, it's the end of the road for Ethan Hayter's brief race lead here
00:09in the individual time trial in Pisa,
00:11because Dan Hu is going to take the hot seat by 10 seconds from Ethan Hayter.
00:1632.30 is the new time to beat.
00:20Very good performance.
00:25Stage 11 and a trip to the seaside.
00:27186 kilometres getting harder and harder.
00:31Departing from Via Reggio, but up and over a massive Category 1 climb
00:35and another couple of difficulties before a finish in Castel Novo de Monti.
00:40Could be a day for a breakaway.
00:42Could be a day for the Maglia Rosa to extend his lead.
00:45Could be a GC battle.
00:47Everything right in the balance as Isaac del Toro rolled off the start line in the sun in Via Reggio
00:54and the flag dropped immediately.
00:56And no sooner had that flag dropped than Wout Venat went on the offensive,
01:00joined eventually and almost inevitably with Amalia Ciclamino, Maz Pedersen.
01:05Those two riders made it extremely hard at the beginning
01:08as the expected battle to get in the breakaway of the day went on with a tailwind for a long time.
01:14Matteo Catanio and Yanis Voizard were one of a number of duos of riders who got off the front
01:20and eventually were reeled in.
01:23The first appearance on this year's Giro of the pink train carrying the Trofeo Centafini
01:27and the next pair to go were Stephen Kreisweig and Javier Asperan.
01:32They went through the first sprint of the day together and then there was even an appearance
01:37of Isaac del Toro in the Maglia Rosa in the company of Antonio Tiberi before he sat up and went back.
01:42The attacks came thick and fast and everybody was waiting until the foot of the massive Cat 1 climb to go.
01:52White Pools then and Wilco Kelderman were the next duo to hold a slender advantage
01:56but Maz Pedersen brought them back and a huge group of some 35-40 riders broke free
02:03just before the big Cat 1 climb of the day, Lorenzo Fortunato being one of them
02:07and he attacked with over 10 kilometres and went off in pursuit of 40 King of the Mountains points.
02:13Behind him, the big breakaway shredded and the strongest riders started to emerge from the pack
02:18including Luke Plapp once again seeking out the opportunity.
02:22Egan Bernal from the GC group attacked but was marked by Juan Ayuso and Isaac del Toro
02:26At the front of the race, Nairo Quintana, rolling back the years, was in second place on the road
02:32but it was Lorenzo Fortunato, the King of the Mountains, who went over the top of the Alpe San Pellegrino
02:38in first place and added another 40 points to his tally in the King of the Mountains competition.
02:44A group went clear over the top, not many riders remaining from the original breakaway
02:48but a five-rider group of Plapp, Bilbao, Pools, Quintana and Fortunato established itself.
02:54Everything was right in the balance though, the gap between them and the peloton was pretty insubstantial
03:01as they headed through the second sprint of the day with a diminishing advantage
03:05and then Lorenzo Fortunato took a further 18 points over the Category 2 Toano climb,
03:10the penultimate categorised climb of the day.
03:14Nairo Quintana took the bonus seconds and the prize money at the Red Bull sprint
03:18as the five riders were still off the front by only about a minute
03:22but then a number of teams, including EF and Lidl Trek, started riding hard
03:26to the foot of the final climb of Bismantova.
03:30Canapaz though opens up a little bit of a gap
03:32and Rafa Maika, as he's done some Olympic champion, Canapaz at his best.
03:36As they looked behind to see who would ride to bring him back,
03:42it was Isaac del Toro briefly who went off in pursuit before thinking better of it
03:46and then sitting on the wheels of his teammates.
03:48Canapaz then soloing over the top of the final categorised climb
03:51with five kilometres of the race remaining with a 30-second advantage.
03:55He's going to take ten bonus seconds and he is back in this race.
04:01Richard Canapaz, reckoned with another name.
04:05He is not done yet.
04:06Much more to come from Canapaz.
04:08That was a sensational victory.
04:10As we look down the road, see the size of the gap
04:12and watch the sprint for second place
04:14and Del Toro cruises over the line to take six seconds ahead of Giulio Ciccone and Tom Pidcock.
04:19A masterful performance from the Ecuadorian champion,
04:25the former Olympic road race champion,
04:28a GC racer with a one-day racer's heart.
04:30Richard Canapaz back to close to his best
04:32and the promise of things to come in the general classification
04:36when we get to the altitude of the third week.
04:39Class performance from Richard Canapaz and EF Education.
04:42Easy Post opened their account at the Giro.
04:45The champagne corks popping for the American team for the first time
04:48and Canapaz announcing himself at this Giro,
04:51ahead of Del Toro in second and Giulio Ciccone in third.
04:57Isaac Del Toro's second place, though, in his six-second time bonus
04:59hands him an extended advantage over his teammate,
05:03Juan Ayuso, while Canapaz catapults himself up to sixth place.
05:07Not much change in the Mali of Ciclamino,
05:10although Alessandro Tonelli picked up a couple of points
05:12and closed the gap, but it's still huge.
05:16And the same is true of the King of the Mountains competition.
05:18Lorenzo Fortunato picking up 58 further points
05:22to extend his lead to 102 over Juan Ayuso.
05:25And Del Toro continues in the white jersey
05:28with the same advantage over Ayuso and Tiberi as on GC.
