00:17by fake or explicit content we've all heard about defect it's called the take it down act and at
00:22its core it's about consent this law makes it a crime to post intimate images or videos of someone
00:28whether they are real or ai generated without that person's permission that includes deepfake
00:33pornography which uses artificial intelligence to paste someone's face onto explicit material
00:38they take horrible pictures and i guess sometimes even make up the pictures and they post it without
00:44consent or anything else under the law platforms like google meta and tick tock must remove such
00:50content within 48 hours of being notified if they don't they could face serious penalties and anyone
00:56caught sharing such content could be sent to jail for up to three years melania called it a national
01:00victory and said that it would help families feel more in control of their children's digital lives
01:06this is the sixth law trump has signed in his second term he's otherwise relied heavily on executive
01:11orders but this one got near unanimous support in congress passing 409 to 2 in the house and clearing
01:17the senate without a single objection the law has big names behind it paris hilton a big-time advocate
01:23for online safety called it a crucial step tech giants publicly endorsed it as well but not everyone's
01:29cheering groups like the electronic frontier foundation and the internet society say the law is too broad
01:35they concern it could open the door to censorship removing not just harmful content but also legal
01:40pornography lgbtq content or even political dissent one thing is clear in a rare moment of agreement
01:46washington decided that protecting people's images real or fake matters the question is what comes next
