At a House Democratic press briefing on Tuesday, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) slammed charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) for assaulting federal agents during a confrontation outside an immigration detention center in New Jersey.

00:06members Kim Schreier and Chantal Brown. First I'd like to talk about the
00:10charges against Congresswoman LaMonica MacGyver. Those charges are baseless
00:15and politically motivated. Three reasons why. First, Congresswoman MacGyver had a
00:21statutory authority to be at that detention center. She was conducting her
00:25oversight duties. Second, if what she did was purportedly so awful that it results
00:32in criminal charges, how is it possible they literally gave her a tour of the
00:37facility afterwards? They escorted her around and gave her a tour of that
00:42facility while she was conducting oversight. And third, she was trying to
00:46prevent the unlawful arrest of the mayor of Newark. And guess what? She was right
00:50because the Trump Justice Department dropped all charges against the mayor
00:55Newark. So we asked them to also drop charges against LaMonica. This is a
01:00baseless, politically motivated distraction. And what are they
01:03distracting from? This big ugly bill that they're gonna have a meeting on at 1 a.m.
01:10in the morning. I mean, who does that? Right? You do that because you don't want
01:13the American public to know what's in your big ugly bill. But we know what's in it.
01:17It has the largest cut to health care in U.S. history. About a trillion dollars. It then
01:25also is going to kick off approximately 14 million people off of health care. And
01:29why are they doing this? To impose the largest tax cut for billionaires in U.S.
01:34history. So that's basically what this big ugly bill does. And they're trying to move
01:39it through in the dead of night at 1 a.m. We asked the Republicans to list American
01:44people and work on what Democrats are trying to work on, which is lowering the
01:48costs of rent and groceries and consumer products. That's what we should be focused on.
