00:00Now for Middlesbrough, obviously a disappointing end to the championship campaign.
00:06The likes of them and West Bromwich Albion as well, so disappointed with how they ended the season
00:12because they were in and around the top six for the majority of the campaign.
00:17And Middlesbrough obviously falling short, really disappointing because Michael Carrick's side were really pressing.
00:25They were making sure that they had a top six challenge.
00:29They had clear goals to go and get in those playoff spots.
00:32Falling short, finishing 10th in the end as well.
00:35Just falling short at the very back end of the season as well.
00:38You look at the loss to Leeds at home, Millwall away, Sheffield Wednesday away, Coventry away as well
00:45who obviously did get a spot in the playoffs as well.
00:50So certainly there was momentum throughout the season but it just sort of faded away
00:55and really made it difficult for Michael Carrick's side to go there.
00:59But they have got that strong call.
01:01They have got a base to go and rely on and maybe a few summer investments this time around
01:07should help them out in terms of their goals for next season.
01:10So, Dan, what's your thoughts on Middlesbrough's season on how they sort of tailed off?
01:15How disappointed will they be with that?
01:17But how important is it also that they move on and they sort of quickly have to forget it and go again?
01:23And, you know, the championship is so relentless as well.
01:26And it will be back sooner rather than later.
01:28So, you know, what are the goals for Middlesbrough and how they sort of attack the summer ahead of their massive campaign?
01:35You have to say, because promotion will be probably the goal for Michael Carrick's side next season.
01:43Well, Charles, I have to agree with you.
01:44Yes, I think it is a huge year coming up for Middlesbrough.
01:47And I think that depends on what happens with Michael Carrick, to be honest.
01:52Does Steve Gibson, the chairman and the owner, stay with him or does he plump for someone new?
01:56The early indications are, according to sources, is that Carrick will probably stay with Middlesbrough at the moment.
02:03I think that's looking more likely than not.
02:06Steve Gibson tends to be quite loyal with his managers.
02:09He tends to give them a chance.
02:11Carrick, of course, going into his third full season as Middlesbrough head coach.
02:16But having missed out on the playoffs for the second year running, it's not ideal for Middlesbrough.
02:21Of course, in his first half a year there, because, of course, he only joined halfway through the first season.
02:29He got them into the playoffs and the next two has failed to do so for the next two full seasons.
02:35So going into his third full season, yeah, it's not great.
02:39The fact that he's only got them in once and that was only in his first half of the season as well.
02:44So not great for Middlesbrough in terms of what's just happened this season.
02:48And as you say there, you've rattled off some of the results.
02:51Not brilliant to be losing to teams around them.
02:53That's what's done for them.
02:55Obviously, they did go into the last game of the season against Coventry, still with an opportunity of getting into the playoffs.
03:02But they never really looked like getting anything in that game at all, to be honest.
03:05They looked devoid of ideas for most of it.
03:08They had the odd moment, but Coventry were always the better side.
03:10And, of course, Coventry now had themselves out of the playoffs at the hands of Sunderland and with the Wearsiders going to Wembley in the playoff final.
03:17But for Middlesbrough, real disappointment after that game.
03:20Obviously, Carrick, you know, he was quite positive after it, which surprised me a little bit because I honestly didn't think they were that great in that game.
03:27And yet he saw the positives.
03:29And I suppose it is.
03:31I suppose the positives he probably was seeing was that it was a learning experience for a lot of his young players.
03:35And even more experienced ones as well, that they have to use that emotion and the fact that they didn't really get over the line.
03:41And, yes, they had some great results throughout the season.
03:43There was a time where they were free scoring, but at other times they just looked like they couldn't buy a win.
03:48And that was one of those days on the last day of the season against Coventry.
03:51So, big summer to come.
03:53Of course, you could argue that the season just gone might have been different had Emmanuel Latte-Lath not been sold in January.
04:01Their main striker, of course, their main source of goals.
04:04And, well, that probably is mostly true because, of course, he was one of the ones who was scoring most of Middlesbrough's goals for most of the season just gone.
04:13And the loss of him made it really difficult for Middlesbrough to pick off where they'd left off after January as well.
04:18And supporters were clearly frustrated that he was gone off to the MLS to Atlanta United.
04:24But I think for Steve Gibson, it was an offer he just couldn't refuse the money that was on the table.
04:28So, they had to take it and hopefully that money gets reinvested into the Riverside this summer.
04:33And therefore, they can have a good summer, a productive summer and hit the ground running in the championship next season when it starts in August to come.
