00:02Last season, during Game 2 of the Western Conference Championship

00:05between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves,

00:07controversy broke out.

00:09With just 47 seconds and a 2-point Timberwolf lead,

00:12forward Jaden McDaniel makes a nice save to prevent the ball from going out of bounds

00:16before having it poked away by Kyrie Irving.

00:18On the floor, the call is Timberwolves' ball,

00:21but Mavs coach Jason Kidd decides to challenge the possession,

00:24saying that Kyrie Irving never touched the ball.

00:27And while the review would show that to be true,

00:29it also showed a clear foul by Irving on McDaniels.

00:33However, because Jason Kidd specifically challenged the possession of the ball,

00:37all the refs could look at is who knocked the ball out of bounds,

00:40not rule on the foul call.

00:42So they rule Mavericks' ball, and just 30 seconds later, this happens.

00:52That offseason, the NBA changed the rules.

00:55Now, refs can review fouls even on out-of-bounds calls.

00:59But luckily for the Timberwolves, what goes around, comes around.

01:02In Game 4 of their current series against the Lakers,

01:05with a 1-point lead and just 10 seconds left,

01:07Anthony Edwards attempts to drive the lean on LeBron James

01:10when he slips and loses the ball out of bounds.

01:13Wolves head coach Chris Finch challenges the out-of-bounds call,

01:16saying that it was out off James.

01:17And while replay did show the ball going off Edwards,

01:21it also revealed a reach-in foul by LeBron.

01:24And thanks to the Jaden McDaniels rule,

01:26the refs were able to call the foul on James.

01:29Edwards would hit both of its free throws,

01:31and this time, with a 3-point lead,

01:33the Timberwolves would hold on,

01:34giving them a 3-1 series advantage.
