00:00:00So the car's heading out now onto the formation lap.
00:00:03Jules Gounod, having in only his fourth qualifying session,
00:00:07got his first pole position in DTM, will lead them around.
00:00:10Jordan Pepper has been second in free practice one,
00:00:13second in free practice two,
00:00:15second in both qualifying sessions,
00:00:17second in the race yesterday,
00:00:18and he'd quite like to move one step forward.
00:00:21But I'll tell you what, if he finishes second again,
00:00:23if he keeps finishing second all year, Brian,
00:00:24he's going to win the championship.
00:00:25He's been super consistent.
00:00:27We've discovered in the last few years
00:00:28that it is consistency,
00:00:30not necessarily race wins that wins championships.
00:00:33And if he can finish in second place a little bit more,
00:00:35then he certainly is a contender for the championship.
00:00:39As you say, he would dearly love to take a first win
00:00:42on his debut weekend on his first full season in DTM.
00:00:46But at the moment, you can see from the graphic,
00:00:49there's Lucas Auer who leads the way,
00:00:51courtesy of that win yesterday.
00:00:54But Jordan Pepper, just four points adrift in second place.
00:00:58Yeah, and you get three points for qualifying on pole,
00:01:00two for qualifying second, and a point for third,
00:01:02which is why that gap is down to four points,
00:01:05because Jordan Pepper got into the top three again
00:01:07in qualifying, and Zhuge Liang
00:01:09picked up an additional three points for his pole position.
00:01:11So he's level on points now with Tommy Pryning,
00:01:14who's a bit further back on the fourth row of the grid.
00:01:18So they're about to get going.
00:01:20In terms of the other championships,
00:01:22the rookie standings are being led by Ben Durr
00:01:24after round one from Maurice Schuring,
00:01:2635 points to 29, Tom Cullen to third.
00:01:28The Manufacturer's Championship
00:01:30being led by the current Manufacturer champions.
00:01:33There's Michelle Gatting, who used to be on the DTM package
00:01:36when she was a frontrunner in the Scirocco R Cup.
00:01:38She's the partner of the pole sitter, Jules Gounon.
00:01:41Great racer herself.
00:01:42Mercedes lead the Manufacturer's Championships
00:01:44from Lamborghini, and Wynwood Racing
00:01:46lead the team's championship
00:01:48after the first round of the championship yesterday.
00:01:51So rolling start, the safety car now starting
00:01:54to bunch everybody back up together.
00:01:56We've got these great onboards.
00:01:57Here's Pryning.
00:01:58I will give you an aircon reminder at a later stage.
00:02:03And all sounding calm.
00:02:05Take a breath, everybody.
00:02:06Get ready to go racing once again in the DTM.
00:02:09It's a voyage into the unknown with this additional pit
00:02:12stop that we've got.
00:02:13Remember, 10 to 25 minutes for pit stop one,
00:02:17and then between 39 and 45 minutes
00:02:19is the window for the second pit stop.
00:02:21They've all got to come in and change
00:02:22tires during those pit stops.
00:02:24The top 10 on the grid have to start
00:02:26the race on the newer tire in which they qualified.
00:02:28The revs rise then, and we go racing once again here
00:02:31at Oslo-Sleben.
00:02:32And it looks like another really good start
00:02:34for a pole sitter in a Mercedes.
00:02:35But today, it's Jules Gounon rather than Lukas Sauer.
00:02:37Jordan Pepper can't find a way through.
00:02:39Porsche trying to get into third place there.
00:02:41It's Anjoun Gouhon going side by side with Thierry Vermeulen.
00:02:44He's got the inside line through turn two.
00:02:45Vermeulen out wide in the Ferrari.
00:02:47He's got nowhere to go, so the Turkish driver
00:02:49should be able to squeeze his way through.
00:02:51Vermeulen, he's almost on the grass.
00:02:52Definitely on the grass is Maro Engel a few positions back.
00:02:55He had to back off out of it there.
00:02:57But still forcing his way to the inside, he's Gouhon.
00:03:00He's definitely got third place.
00:03:01Vermeulen might drop back one or two more places
00:03:03if he's not careful because of the Audi of Ricciardo Fella.
00:03:06That's already got him.
00:03:07He's up to fourth.
00:03:08There's Anjoun Baini on the grass as well
00:03:10in the Mustang trying to make his way through.
00:03:11The smoke pouring from the back of Maro Engel's Mercedes
00:03:14lurking around about ninth place.
00:03:16So he's got damage.
00:03:17Hopefully, it's nothing too bad.
00:03:18Bodywork rubbing on the tire could be OK with that
00:03:20as they go through the chicane for the first time.
00:03:22Look at them thundering fast.
00:03:24These cars can do over 160 miles an hour, 260 kilometers an hour.
00:03:29Onto the back straight.
00:03:30There you go.
00:03:30And it is Jules Gouhon that leads the way.
00:03:32Second place, Jordan Pepper.
00:03:33Up to third, Anjoun Gouhon.
00:03:35A great start for Ricciardo Fella, up to fourth place.
00:03:37Thierry Vermeulen loses, too.
00:03:39He's down to fifth place.
00:03:40Thomas Preinig is behind him in sixth next to the Porsches.
00:03:44Then it's Luca Engsler in seventh place.
00:03:46And Lukas Auer, yesterday's winner,
00:03:48right behind him in eighth position.
00:03:51They make their way out through the final corner.
00:03:53Looks like Reni Rastad, the big blue BMW,
00:03:55has made a good start as his compatriot there
00:03:57and teammate gets a bit of a tap.
00:04:00That's the green Chevrolet-backed BMW
00:04:02of Marco Wittmann being edged out wide
00:04:05as he came through by Maurice Schurig,
00:04:06who's not shy of getting his elbows out
00:04:08on his debut this weekend.
00:04:09But at the end of the first lap of the race,
00:04:11as they go through turn two now, it is Jules Gouhon
00:04:14who's done the job.
00:04:15He's turned pole position into the race lead.
00:04:17Pepper is going with him.
00:04:18But the best of starts, really,
00:04:19coming from Gouhon and Feller, Brian.
00:04:21That was a feisty start from many drivers.
00:04:25As we look down on Arjen Mijni,
00:04:27trying to work his way forwards.
00:04:28Just ahead of him is Jack Aitken.
00:04:30Ricciardo Feller was really giving it some
00:04:33along the pit straight for the first time
00:04:35in a round turns one and two.
00:04:36He made up a position, but he was pushing really hard.
00:04:39But looking there from the perspective of Timo Glocken,
00:04:42Arjen Mijni just experiencing a little bit of the dirt,
00:04:44but a lot of drivers getting their elbows out
00:04:47on a circuit where overtaking is so difficult
00:04:50when they're all bunched together at the start.
00:04:52Picking up the pace is a good opportunity
00:04:54to try and pick up those places.
00:04:56Yes, there were three places gained
00:04:58on that first lap for René Rast.
00:05:00So I think he had the better of the starts,
00:05:02perhaps more than anybody else managed to do.
00:05:04Team Radio.
00:05:06The rear right seems to be a little bit smoky.
00:05:08We have to survive.
00:05:09Maybe I try to bring you on the first opportunity.
00:05:11Watch the tire pressures.
00:05:12I don't have telemetry, so watch the tire pressures.
00:05:14Yeah.
00:05:16Yeah, Maro Engels, race engineer, saying,
00:05:18confirm you got damage, there's smoke coming from it.
00:05:20Although that's lessened now, I would say, on this second lap.
00:05:23But just keep an eye on the tire pressures.
00:05:25They get that information in the cockpit
00:05:27because it can cause a slow puncture
00:05:30if the bodywork is rubbing on the tire.
00:05:31But for now, the right rear looks okay on Maro Engels' car.
00:05:34He has lost a place off the start,
00:05:36a couple of places off the start of the race.
00:05:38He's got René Rast there right behind him as well,
00:05:39which means René's gained more positions.
00:05:41He's up to 11th now.
00:05:42He got ahead of the McLaren of Ben Durr.
00:05:44So from 15th on the grid, the blue Schubert BMW
00:05:47up four places just outside the top ten.
00:05:49Replay of the start.
00:05:50Keep an eye on the silver Audi and the bright green Porsche
00:05:53making the best of the starts.
00:05:54Gouin getting the inside there
00:05:56and kind of hung out to dry, really, was Vermeulen.
00:05:59He had nowhere to go other than staying on the outside line.
00:06:01He tried to keep it on the kerbs there
00:06:03so he'd get the inside line for the next corner.
00:06:05The left-hander at turn three, but he kicked up the dust,
00:06:08lost a bit of traction, bit of grip.
00:06:10There it is, kicking up the dust,
00:06:11and that then allows the Audi to get alongside him.
00:06:14And Fabio put me in the grass.
00:06:19That was, I think, Arjun Meini saying,
00:06:21yeah, Fabio put me on the grass.
00:06:23Fabio being his teammate, Fabio Scherrer.
00:06:26Yeah, awkward match.
00:06:27Yeah, that's the one person you really do want
00:06:29to be put on the grass.
00:06:29A great on-board shot.
00:06:30That was Mirko Borgelotti.
00:06:32And it takes a bit of courage just
00:06:34to keep your foot buried on it as you're
00:06:35going through the dust there.
00:06:37Ben Durr looking racier than I can remember him for ages.
00:06:40I mean, at the moment, he has been passed by Rene Rasmussen.
00:06:42He was really fighting early on in the race.
00:06:45The view from Lukas Auer as we went into the hotel
00:06:48turn on the inside.
00:06:50Yesterday's winner giving the pinch on the exit.
00:06:53It's all that dust rising up into the air.
00:06:55Incident between Lukas Auer and Mauro Engel at turn two,
00:06:59lap one under investigation.
00:07:01That's the one that caused the smoke to Mauro Engel's car.
00:07:04The RRDB, those two are pretty good mates,
00:07:06and also teammates that in GT World Challenge last year
00:07:10won the GT World Challenge Sprint Cup together.
00:07:13But there's not much room out there
00:07:14on this tight, twisty run through the first sector
00:07:17on lap one.
00:07:17So making contact with somebody else is fairly easy.
00:07:20And if you can see where you're going,
00:07:21if you're poor old Jack Aitken, look at him widening the eyes.
00:07:24Where the hell's the track gone, he says?
00:07:26I can't see a thing.
00:07:27Absolutely covered in dust from everybody running
00:07:29wide in front of him.
00:07:30And look how bad that smoke was at one stage
00:07:32on the Mauro Engel Mercedes.
00:07:34The team Wynwood car, though, looks
00:07:36like the bodywork has rubbed away.
00:07:38And he's OK.
00:07:39He certainly doesn't look like he's
00:07:40got a puncture at the moment.
00:07:41Although he has dropped back, hasn't he,
00:07:42Mauro Engel, from the packet.
00:07:44He's lost another place to René Rast.
00:07:46And yeah, he's maybe struggling with that car.
00:07:48He's lost a big gap.
00:07:49He's got Ben Dern, Nicky Tim, Ben Green,
00:07:51and a whole queue of cars.
00:07:53And his teammate, Marco Wittmann,
00:07:54queued up behind him now.
00:07:55His pace is not good, sorry.
00:07:57He's a good second slower than the cars around him.
00:08:00Yeah, it's a bit like René Rast yesterday, wasn't it?
00:08:02A bit of a mobile chicane at the moment.
00:08:04Right, race controls got involved.
00:08:06Lucas Hauer to fall back behind the car of Mauro Engel,
00:08:09having forced him off the track by their decision.
00:08:13So Lucas Hauer picking up the first penalty of the race.
00:08:17Yeah, he's currently in eighth place.
00:08:19Mauro Engel is in 11th.
00:08:21So if he lets Mauro Engel past, he's
00:08:22also got to let pass Mirko Bortolotti and René Rast.
00:08:25René Rast only did about half the race yesterday,
00:08:28or less than half of the race yesterday.
00:08:30When he retired, the car was struggling in qualifying,
00:08:32struggling more in the race.
00:08:33An engine sensor issue, not just the sensor,
00:08:36but probably a problem with the engine.
00:08:37They retired the car, but also saved tires.
00:08:40You get here at Oschersleben four sets of new Pirelli slicks
00:08:43to last two qualifyings on Saturday and Sunday
00:08:46and two races on Saturday and Sunday.
00:08:48He didn't qualify in the top 10, René Rast.
00:08:50I presume he started on the older tire yesterday.
00:08:52It's a guess, but I think an educated guess,
00:08:54which means he's got more fresh tires than most out there.
00:08:57And I guess he's got a pair of them on at the moment
00:08:59because the set of slicks looking good.
00:09:02Oh, the Aston Martin off, I'm afraid,
00:09:04of the number eight car, Nicolas Barthes.
00:09:06Hope he's OK, but that's got him pretty heavily.
00:09:08And the safety car is coming out.
00:09:10That is the exit to turn three, I think.
00:09:13It's gone into the gravel trap and straight on there.
00:09:16And a fair bit of damage to the front right corner
00:09:19of the Aston and elsewhere.
00:09:21There'll probably be some more damage.
00:09:22The gravel trap hopefully did its job
00:09:24and dissipated some of the speed,
00:09:25but he has made it as far as the tire barrier.
00:09:28It's in a precarious position.
00:09:30And so the safety car is deployed,
00:09:32much to the annoyance, I'm sure, of Jean Gunon,
00:09:34who had built up a one and a half second lead.
00:09:37Yes, so that is on Hasserud.
00:09:39That is the middle of turn three.
00:09:42So immediately, the calculations are being made.
00:09:46This race may well go a little bit further
00:09:49than the 55 minutes because we have the option,
00:09:51if the safety car comes out,
00:09:53of having additional Joker laps added to the race.
00:09:58But at the moment, the top priority
00:10:00is to get the cherry picker there.
00:10:02Nicola Barthes, hopefully all OK.
00:10:04Get the car removed, get everything to safety.
00:10:06But at the moment, strictly no overtaking.
00:10:08The car is single file behind the safety car.
00:10:11So at the moment, Jean Gunon leading the race.
00:10:13He's on course to pick up 25 points.
00:10:17Lucas Auer is eighth.
00:10:18He's the championship leader as it stands.
00:10:20Only going to pick up eight points for eighth,
00:10:22but he's going to have to drop back,
00:10:24as we've heard, to Maro Engels.
00:10:25So he's going to lose several positions.
00:10:27Jordan Pepper is second, like he's been all weekend.
00:10:29So second would give him 20 points.
00:10:34So he is going to move ahead of Lucas Auer.
00:10:37Jean Gunon is going to move ahead of Lucas Auer as well.
00:10:41So as it stands, Jordan Pepper, I
00:10:42think, will be the championship leader.
00:10:44I know it's early to talk about the championship,
00:10:46but it's on everybody's mind at some point or another.
00:10:49Maro Engels back in 11th place.
00:10:51He's third in the championship before today.
00:10:52He's only going to pick up five points.
00:10:54Thomas Pryning is sixth, and will pick up
00:10:5710 points as it stands.
00:11:00So it will be 44 points as it stands to Jordan Pepper,
00:11:0439 Jean Gunon, and 36 Lucas Auer will be the top three.
00:11:09But Auer is almost certainly going to lose more points.
00:11:11We get to look now on board the safety car, the Cupra safety
00:11:16car, both in the cockpit and looking back from it
00:11:18to the pole sitter and race leader.
00:11:21The first pit stop window will be postponed.
00:11:24That is the news from race control.
00:11:26This may yet be a one-stop race.
00:11:28You never know.
00:11:29So pit stop window postponed.
00:11:31It was originally scheduled to open 15 minutes into the race.
00:11:34So just hold station at the moment, everybody.
00:11:37It could all change.
00:11:39We're circulating behind the safety car
00:11:41until they're able to get the number eight car to safety.
00:11:46Yeah, and if there is a full course yellow or a safety
00:11:48car in the DTM, you can't pit during it.
00:11:51Once the window open, you can pit, but you can't pit.
00:11:53And it won't count as a mandatory stop,
00:11:55even if the windows open.
00:11:57So they delay the window, if that's the case.
00:12:00And they can push it back by three minutes.
00:12:04Now, if there's a really long delay,
00:12:06and the first pit stop today doesn't
00:12:08happen before minute 25 in the race,
00:12:10then they would turn it into a one-pit stop race.
00:12:13You would board that second pit stop.
00:12:15So that's the situation.
00:12:17But it should be OK.
00:12:18They're already towing the Aston Martin away,
00:12:20and we're only, what, 10 minutes into the race.
00:12:22The other thing to bear in mind is
00:12:23that you can extend the race distance by up to two laps,
00:12:27called two joker laps now in the regulations,
00:12:30if laps are lost to a safety car.
00:12:32So the original race distance, 55 minutes plus one lap,
00:12:35now becomes a 55-minute plus three-lap race.
00:12:38They had those two laps on, but it's capped at two laps.
00:12:41It doesn't keep adding them on.
00:12:43So it is going to be a slightly longer race.
00:12:45So again, all the calculations, Brian, the team's had.
00:12:49This is what we're going to pit this lap.
00:12:50This is what's happening.
00:12:52That's how much fuel we need.
00:12:55That's how many racing laps we're probably going to do.
00:12:57That's where we put the tires on.
00:12:58That's where we're going to save the new tires.
00:13:01We're going to look at page 19 of the spreadsheet
00:13:03now, because it's all changed.
00:13:04Yeah, get your abacus out, everybody.
00:13:06It's good.
00:13:06It keeps them on their toes, doesn't it?
00:13:08You may wonder why the races are five minutes shorter
00:13:11this year.
00:13:12That's because the ADAC brought in a new synthetic fuel
00:13:16called DTM Pro Climate that reduces CO2 emissions about 75%
00:13:22less emissions, thinking of the environment
00:13:25very much at the forefront of the minds of the ADAC.
00:13:29The only thing is that the synthetic fuel is a slightly
00:13:31higher consumption.
00:13:32So the races are shortened by about five minutes.
00:13:35But they're running behind the safety car.
00:13:38They use a lot less fuel, which is
00:13:39why we're able to add those additional two Joker laps.
00:13:43I'll tell you somebody who's probably
00:13:44pleased about the safety car.
00:13:46Well, two people, Rene Rast, because he's been flying.
00:13:49He's gone 15th to 10th.
00:13:51And now the safety car's queued everybody up
00:13:53right in front of him.
00:13:55And he's saving the tires as well,
00:13:57because I'm pretty sure he's got a brand new set of tires
00:14:00on, the Pirellis.
00:14:01Safety car's coming in this lap.
00:14:03They're just coming out of turn three.
00:14:04The other person that, for a different reason,
00:14:06is probably pleased about all of this
00:14:08is Maro Engel, because that car was struggling.
00:14:10And the more laps behind the safety car,
00:14:11the less he has to defend in the first stint.
00:14:13Sounds like the plan will probably
00:14:15be to bring him in early.
00:14:18At the safety car restart, you have to take care.
00:14:21Because the hour in front has to give back the position
00:14:26to car number 24, which is Maro Engel,
00:14:29which is directly behind you.
00:14:33All very complicated, isn't it?
00:14:34Rene Rast aware of the situation.
00:14:35Meanwhile, let's hear from Farina.
00:14:38And I'm now here with Francois Feblis.
00:14:41Let's just find out from Nico.
00:14:43Obviously, it looks like he lost control.
00:14:46What happened?
00:14:46And I guess everything is OK with him, right?
00:14:48Yeah, sure.
00:14:49Even the car.
00:14:49I think it's just a mistake.
00:14:51It was really dusty after the start.
00:14:53I think the second lap, he already
00:14:55mentioned that it needs to stay on track.
00:14:57And he outbraked a bit at the braking point.
00:14:59And then he went to the gravel.
00:15:00But the car is fine.
00:15:01Driver is fine.
00:15:02No problem.
00:15:03So it's just a shame.
00:15:06One race less, but we are here to learn.
00:15:08So it's not a big deal.
00:15:09All OK.
00:15:09Thank you so much, Francois.
00:15:11Back to you.
00:15:12Thanks very much.
00:15:12Great to hear from Francois.
00:15:14Trying to learn and develop.
00:15:15And both cars were several tenths quicker in qualifying
00:15:17today than they were yesterday.
00:15:19As we pull the pin and go racing flat out once again.
00:15:22Over the line for the restart, then.
00:15:24Jul Guenon leads Jordan Pepper, who I reckon
00:15:26has got his mirrors full of a Porsche at the moment.
00:15:28Hasn't he yet?
00:15:29Pretty close to him.
00:15:30His i-Engine, Guenon, had a good restart there.
00:15:32Guenon sees it as an opportunity.
00:15:34Pepper knows what might be coming.
00:15:35So holds the tight line on the way through the hotel curb
00:15:38as they go through turn two.
00:15:39Pick up speed from 90 kilometers an hour.
00:15:41They'll head now rattling towards the chicane.
00:15:43It turns six, seven, and eight.
00:15:46Oh, that's the nightmare.
00:15:49Because he's got to let three pass and build up the speed
00:15:52and make sure nobody else comes past him as well.
00:15:54He's let Engel pass.
00:15:55He's managed to close the door.
00:15:57Has he?
00:15:58Because Ben Durr is thinking about trying
00:16:00to go up the inside.
00:16:01No, he doesn't.
00:16:02But that was well done.
00:16:03I thought it was a bit risky doing it that early
00:16:05with everybody queued up.
00:16:06He had to let two others through, Bortolotti and Rast,
00:16:09before he could let Engel through,
00:16:10because he's been instructed to let Engel back through.
00:16:13But I thought with everybody being queued up like that,
00:16:15he was in danger of maybe losing more places.
00:16:17But he got away with it.
00:16:18Yeah, always that risk of getting hung out to dry.
00:16:20He did think about it, about where
00:16:21he was going to let them through at a point in the track
00:16:23where it wasn't going to let too many people through.
00:16:26Right, the first pit window is open.
00:16:28So the pits are open for the next 15 minutes
00:16:31for drivers to come in for their mandatory stop,
00:16:33as Marco Wittmann continues to push his way forward,
00:16:37moving up the field.
00:16:39Yeah, Marco Wittmann looking good at the moment in this.
00:16:42He didn't have a great start to the race,
00:16:44but looking good at this stage of the race,
00:16:46trying to get back at the order.
00:16:47Rennie Rast, definitely looking good
00:16:49at the first stage of the race.
00:16:50He comes over the line now.
00:16:52Bortolotti's eighth, Rast is ninth, Engel is 10th,
00:16:55Ben Durr is 11th.
00:16:56Lucas Sauer has come into the pits.
00:16:58Max Powell has come into the pits.
00:16:59Ben Green and Arjun Maini coming right
00:17:01at the top of the pit window, opening as well then.
00:17:04So 15-minute pit window, this first pit window.
00:17:07And these are the four coming in,
00:17:10Auer, Powell, Green, and Maini opting for the early stop.
00:17:13Makes sense, really, for Lucas Sauer,
00:17:15doesn't it, because he then got involved in a queue of cars,
00:17:18having had to let three past him?
00:17:21Yes, so keeping to the speed limit
00:17:23as he comes into the pits, the team
00:17:24having to think on their feet here.
00:17:26So once again, starting with the rear wheels,
00:17:29it's a bit difficult getting that left rear on,
00:17:32but they've got it all done.
00:17:33Now the front's off the jacks, it will go.
00:17:36Not especially quick, I don't think, from the team there,
00:17:38but he's out onto the pit lane and back out
00:17:40to rejoin the race.
00:17:42Yeah, so the amended pit stop time,
00:17:44it's the same length window, 15 minutes.
00:17:46It's from 1.46 until 2.01 now.
00:17:50So just shifted it back because of that safety car period.
00:17:56Look at Arjun Maini breathing down the neck of Ben
00:17:58Green, itching to pull the pin on that V8 Mustang,
00:18:02but can't yet find a way through.
00:18:04Max Powell has ended up at the back of that group,
00:18:06though, which is unfortunate for him.
00:18:07So the Power Motorsport team with a slower pit stop.
00:18:11And he didn't actually get time for his stationary time.
00:18:14Lucas Sauer, he's only registered as nine
00:18:15and a half seconds as well, which is given they did 6.3
00:18:18yesterday, pretty slow for the team by comparison.
00:18:21Arjun Maini still itching to get past Ben Green
00:18:24in the 296 Ferrari.
00:18:26And they're both on cold tires as well.
00:18:28And Arjun Maini gets alongside.
00:18:30Ben Green said to us last night, that Mustang
00:18:32is mighty in a straight line.
00:18:33So he gets the power down into the pits.
00:18:35Then comes Maro Engel.
00:18:37Jack Aitken is coming in as well.
00:18:39Remember, two of the Ferraris have to share the same box
00:18:42because there are three Ferraris,
00:18:43and you get two spaces in the pit lane.
00:18:45So they have to really think about how
00:18:47they did their pit stop when there's only a six-minute
00:18:49window for the second period.
00:18:51So the British driver in, a race winner here last year,
00:18:55won the opening round of the season from pole position.
00:18:58Maro Engel at a podium last year, at a podium yesterday.
00:19:00Gets on pretty well around Oschersleben.
00:19:03Lights up the tires.
00:19:04Away he goes.
00:19:05Win would have been excellent at pit stops
00:19:07in the last couple of years as well.
00:19:08So Maro Engel now kind of going to be back in a race
00:19:11with his friend, Lukas Sauer, and brand mate as well.
00:19:16Because the Mercedes of Lukas Sauer
00:19:17should see popping into the camera now.
00:19:19There he is coming out of the last corner.
00:19:22He's a whole straight length back on Maro Engel.
00:19:24But Maro's got cold tires.
00:19:26And Jack Aitken is going to be just in front of Lukas Sauer
00:19:30as well.
00:19:30But can he keep him behind?
00:19:32So Auer is the first at the pit stop,
00:19:34as he's left behind the rest of them, including Arjun Maini.
00:19:37You can see now he's definitely ahead of Ben Green.
00:19:39It looked like he was about to pounce when we cut away from him.
00:19:42He's left him for dead.
00:19:43So going well, Arjun Maini.
00:19:45Now here is Jack Aitken being sucked up by the tire.
00:19:48More warm tires of the Mercedes of the winner of race one
00:19:53yesterday, Lukas Sauer.
00:19:54He just drives past him with more grip
00:19:55as the Ferrari struggles to get its tires up to temperature.
00:19:58Takes everybody about a lap to get them going
00:20:00with no tire heaters allowed.
00:20:02So now Lukas Sauer starts to home in on the driver
00:20:05that he had to let past earlier on, had contact with,
00:20:08Maro Engel, who's also on cold tires,
00:20:11but a bit further up the road.
00:20:12So Auer is catching him.
00:20:14You can see how quickly, look, he's left behind the Ferrari.
00:20:16But he might be just a bit too far back
00:20:18to do anything about Engel, who will have the tires up
00:20:20to temperature pretty well by the end of this lap.
00:20:23Six cars have been in for their pit stop,
00:20:25but this car we're riding on board with now
00:20:28has just recorded the fastest lap.
00:20:30And not just recorded, but he holds
00:20:32the fastest lap of this race.
00:20:33So 123.066 for Rene Rast.
00:20:37He actually recorded it back on lap four,
00:20:39but there's a lot of pace in that BMW.
00:20:41At the moment, Jules Gounon has extended his lead once again
00:20:44to just a little over half a second.
00:20:47In fact, Jordan Pebbs just pegged it back a tad
00:20:49by about a tenth, so a little under now.
00:20:520.413, the gap between first and second.
00:20:54Now, Luca Engstad peels off into the pits
00:20:57as one of the dual motorsport McLarens as well.
00:20:59That is Ben, isn't it?
00:21:00Also, Tom Callender coming in for his stop as well.
00:21:04Yeah, so they come in to go.
00:21:05This is busy. Wait till we get to the second window.
00:21:07They've got basically about three laps to come in.
00:21:09Six minutes, maybe four laps.
00:21:11That's not much choice.
00:21:12So there's going to be a lot of people
00:21:13tripping over one another.
00:21:14It's all about trying to avoid the traffic in the pit lane.
00:21:17Got nine and a half minutes to the pit window still to go.
00:21:19So we're not yet halfway through this window.
00:21:22So these three come in on track.
00:21:24Jürgen on leading the way still.
00:21:27He is about half a second clear of Jordan Pepper
00:21:29in the Lamborghini.
00:21:30Aung San Suu Kyi in the Porsche, third.
00:21:31Ricciardo Feller in the Audi, fourth.
00:21:34Thierry Vermeulen, who lost a couple of places
00:21:35at the start, is fifth.
00:21:36Thomas Preining is there in sixth place.
00:21:38Mirko Bortolotti, René Rast, Marco Wittmann,
00:21:40and Niki Thiem in the top ten.
00:21:42But of course, others have made their pit stop,
00:21:44including Mauro Engel, who was in the top ten,
00:21:46and Lucas Auer, who was just outside the top ten
00:21:49before then.
00:21:50Engel came across the line about 1.8 seconds ahead of Auer,
00:21:53but still being caught.
00:21:55Right.
00:21:56This is tight, isn't it?
00:21:57It is, isn't it?
00:21:58Just it's such a well-orchestrated,
00:22:00very restricted, though, the pit stop.
00:22:02So they have to get it right.
00:22:04While that's been going on, Jordan Pepper
00:22:06has taken about another half a tenth out
00:22:08of Jürgen Aung's lead.
00:22:10So Pepper's not allowing Aung San Suu Kyi
00:22:12to get away here at the front of the field.
00:22:140.359 is the gap now.
00:22:18So Mauro Engel there is the leading pit stopper,
00:22:20followed by the pink and red Mercedes of Lucas Auer.
00:22:23The three coming out of the pits about to be gobbled up,
00:22:25or at least Tom Callender is, although Tom Callender's
00:22:27not going to be that far behind them by the end of the lap.
00:22:30This is Ricciardo Fellow pit bound.
00:22:32Tommo Preining pit bound is coming in as well,
00:22:34and the Porsche, and Niki Thiem.
00:22:36He's also on his way into the pits.
00:22:37They're doing it kind of in threes at the moment,
00:22:39aren't they?
00:22:40Not too many people coming in at the same time,
00:22:42and I'm afraid through the gravel trap
00:22:43has gone Tom Callender on the cold tires.
00:22:46So he's got out of it, but he's lost
00:22:48a ton of opportunities there.
00:22:50More cars come past him.
00:22:51Hankins come past him.
00:22:52Green has come past him.
00:22:53So the two Ferraris together.
00:22:54Max Pell comes past him as well.
00:22:56And that's, again, just trying to get those tires up
00:23:00to temperature with all that horsepower, 550-plus brake
00:23:03horsepower.
00:23:04More than orchestrated chaos in the pit lane.
00:23:07Oh, look at that.
00:23:08How tight it is between the Audi of Fellow.
00:23:10And Preining's got something attached to the car, has he,
00:23:12on the right rear side?
00:23:15Was it just the shadows?
00:23:16It was just the shadow, I thought, for a moment.
00:23:18He picked up something, some mechanical piece
00:23:20from the pit rigs, but it's just a shadow
00:23:23playing a trick in the eyes.
00:23:24But I tell you what, that was tight.
00:23:26Fellow initially had his nose in front,
00:23:28but Preining said, no, I'm going out of the pits first
00:23:31and gets ahead.
00:23:32So this could be a place gain if you keep him
00:23:35behind on the cold tires.
00:23:37So they're making their way through turn two.
00:23:39You've got Niki Tim about to come out of the pits,
00:23:41probably right into the path of Luca Enxler, who's
00:23:44the leading pit stopper up until this point.
00:23:46And he's got Mario Engel right behind him.
00:23:48So Enxler's come out of this still ahead of Engel,
00:23:51as he should have.
00:23:51But Engel's much closer to him than he was, I think,
00:23:54before the pit stop window happened.
00:23:55So as it stands, these two are the leading pit stoppers,
00:23:58but they are probably going to be caught up
00:24:01by the end of the lap.
00:24:02They've still got a healthy gap, haven't they,
00:24:03as they go through turns four and five.
00:24:05But they are being caught, Preining and Fellow,
00:24:08by Enxler, Engel, and Auer.
00:24:11No surprises that, well, car 84 under investigation
00:24:14for not respecting the blue flag.
00:24:16That's Tom Callender.
00:24:17Also under investigation, Thomas Preining and Ricciardo
00:24:20Fellow for the pit stop.
00:24:22I think drag racing in the pit lane
00:24:23is not normally permitted, as Thierry Vermeulen
00:24:26completes his first pit stop.
00:24:28Here's Mirko Portolotti in as well.
00:24:30The Abt Sports Line team getting to work on that car
00:24:33is off the jacks.
00:24:34He rejoins.
00:24:34No dramas there.
00:24:35Nice gap to slot into as well.
00:24:37Manti EMA won the pit stop challenge last year,
00:24:40the fastest three pit stops in each race get awarded points.
00:24:44They've just had the fastest pit stop by a mile.
00:24:46I mean, most people have been a bit off it in this pit stops,
00:24:49because under seven seconds, very good.
00:24:51Under seven and a half, good as well.
00:24:53But you see lots of pit stops in the low sevens
00:24:56or six and a halves.
00:24:57But today, they've been eight and a half-ish seconds,
00:25:00a lot of the good ones, except for Manti,
00:25:02which is why Preining has rocketed up the order,
00:25:05because they had a 6.7 second pit stop.
00:25:07And there is the yellow Porsche trying, trying,
00:25:09trying to squeeze out the inside of Mirko Bortolotti.
00:25:11Two champions going side by side.
00:25:13There's a 2023 champion on the warm tires, though,
00:25:16that gets out ahead as Bortolotti still trying to get his tires up to temperature.
00:25:20Feller then switches past him.
00:25:22Axe ex-Abt employee getting past the Abt Lamborghini.
00:25:25Audi going well.
00:25:26Ricciardo Feller doing a great job here with Land.
00:25:29So he's put himself back in the mix.
00:25:32There is Bortolotti, the number one,
00:25:33proudly emblazoned upon the side of the car,
00:25:36still trying to fend them off.
00:25:37Now he's got Engler and Engler behind him.
00:25:39They're on warmer tires trying to bounce as well.
00:25:41And this is Vermeulen losing out to Preining.
00:25:44It's all kicking off here in the DTM.
00:25:46There's another round of pit stops to come, everybody, as well.
00:25:49So hold on to your hats as out of the pits now
00:25:52goes the grass racing Lamborghini of Jordan Pepper.
00:25:55Got Fabio Schaerer in as well.
00:25:56So Pepper about to come out of the pits.
00:25:59Preining, who's the leading pit stopper,
00:26:00is just about to come out of Turn 12.
00:26:03He's still got Feller fending off Vermeulen.
00:26:06So great battles going on here.
00:26:08So the leading pit stopper into the last corner now
00:26:11is Thomas Preining.
00:26:12And then, according to the track map behind him,
00:26:15Ricciardo Feller will be next,
00:26:16Thierry Vermeulen third, Luca Exler fourth,
00:26:19Mauro Engel fifth, Lucas Auer in sixth.
00:26:21Niki Thiem has appeared up in seventh of the pit stoppers.
00:26:25And they're about to go, as you can see,
00:26:27through Turn 1 right now
00:26:29as the Mustang of Fabio Schaerer comes out of the pits.
00:26:32But they're now trying to catch Jordan Pepper,
00:26:35who's emerged in front of all of them.
00:26:36He's just up at Turn 3, the Lamborghini.
00:26:38So the gold and black Grasser Lamborghini,
00:26:41he's just adding a shot at the moment.
00:26:42Gounod's in.
00:26:43And Gounod has come in the race leader
00:26:45before all of this chaos kicked off.
00:26:48So he's going to get into the mix as well.
00:26:50And Marko Wittbert is coming with him.
00:26:52But at the moment, the leading pit stopper down at Turn 7,
00:26:55but being caught because he's on cold tires,
00:26:57is the Grasser car of the South African Jordan Pepper.
00:27:01This is going to be significant.
00:27:02So Gounod keeping to the speed limit into his pit box.
00:27:05At the moment, Jordan Pepper will
00:27:07be trying to generate as much heat as quickly as possible
00:27:10into the tires of that car.
00:27:12Because this will be a great opportunity
00:27:14to potentially do an undercut on the yellow Mamba.
00:27:16But it's all gone very well down in the Mercedes-AMG team
00:27:20man filter crew.
00:27:22There is a great helmet cam working on Marko Wittbert's car,
00:27:26Schuberth Motorsport.
00:27:27That was the perspective from one of the mechanics.
00:27:29You can see how frantic it is as the BMW fires back up
00:27:33into life.
00:27:33That's a good pit stop, wasn't it?
00:27:35It looked like it for Schuberth.
00:27:36Yes, 6.2 seconds.
00:27:38He's going to be in the mix, you know.
00:27:39So Gounod about to leave the pits.
00:27:41And Wittbert, there is your old track leader still ahead.
00:27:45So Jordan Pepper, as we kept himself ahead of Pryning,
00:27:48now his target is to get past the BMW quickly
00:27:51of Marko Wittbert, which he should be able to do.
00:27:53Marko on the cold tires.
00:27:55And then he's got to catch and pass this man, the driver
00:27:57that he was following, Jules Gounod in the Mercedes,
00:28:00before the pit stop window opened.
00:28:02So on track, the leading pit stopper
00:28:04is Gounod, just out of his shot.
00:28:06Then the green BMW of Wittbert.
00:28:08But he's on cold tires, as is Gounod.
00:28:10And then the Lamborghini, the TGI team Lamborghini,
00:28:14ran by Grasser of Jordan Pepper, nips up the inside
00:28:16and splits the pair of them.
00:28:17He's got his tires up to temperature.
00:28:19He needed to get past Wittbert quickly,
00:28:21because now he's got his eyes set on Gounod.
00:28:23This is his chance.
00:28:24Pryning gets past Wittbert as well.
00:28:25So Pryning is a net third now.
00:28:27All going well for the driver that
00:28:29led this race two years ago.
00:28:31Ended up on the podium because of a pit stop infringement.
00:28:34So what can he do?
00:28:35He's been there or thereabouts all weekend long.
00:28:39And then Wittbert in fourth place,
00:28:41just about hanging on at the moment, as his teammate,
00:28:43René Rast, comes in.
00:28:44And more wild onboards on our pit crew.
00:28:46That gives you a sense, Pryning, of just how quickly they do it.
00:28:49It's so rapid, isn't it?
00:28:50Yeah, that's astonishing.
00:28:52That is their hard work.
00:28:54The helmet cam just showing us what
00:28:56it actually looks like there.
00:28:57But now everybody has or is pitting.
00:29:00Here come the final runners to have done their first pit stop.
00:29:03Coming out of the pit lane.
00:29:04Looks painfully slow to the speed limit.
00:29:06And then the pit exit depositing them
00:29:09right on the racing line on the exit of turn one
00:29:11into turn two.
00:29:12Here come the rest of the crew.
00:29:14Here's Jules Gounod.
00:29:15There's Jordan Pepper.
00:29:16Look how close he is.
00:29:17Thomas Pryning's up with him as well.
00:29:201, 2, 3.
00:29:21Now all riding together on the track.
00:29:23Look how hard Jordan Pepper is fighting the wheel of that car.
00:29:27And they're trying to catch the two ahead who
00:29:29are ahead of them in the race.
00:29:30But on cold tires, Gouen and Rast.
00:29:33So the two in front are being reeled in.
00:29:35They're on cold tires.
00:29:36The green Porsche, the blue BMW.
00:29:38Gounod is effectively, was the leader before all of this.
00:29:41He's the net leader if he can get
00:29:44past the BMW and the Porsche before the end of the lap,
00:29:47really, while they're still on cold tires.
00:29:48But he's got to be careful because he's
00:29:50got, as you say, Pepper in the Lamborghini
00:29:52and Pryning in the Porsche breathing down his neck.
00:29:54We're getting a replay of this side-by-side incident
00:29:58from earlier on between the Audi of Ricciardo Fella
00:30:00and the Porsche of Thomas Pryning,
00:30:03which is under investigation.
00:30:04This is for an unsafe release.
00:30:06And the unsafe release, you would say,
00:30:08would be for Land Motorsport because Pryning was already
00:30:10down the pit lane apron, wasn't he?
00:30:12So the Pryning said, well, I was here first.
00:30:14I'm going to make sure I'm ahead.
00:30:16Even though he was slightly behind at this phase,
00:30:18he was the first one in the pit lane.
00:30:19So they're looking at that now.
00:30:21And we're getting replays of it.
00:30:22We'll let you know as soon as we know
00:30:24if there is a penalty to be had.
00:30:26Gouin is still ahead.
00:30:27Rast is still second.
00:30:28Now they're queued up behind him, though.
00:30:30And look at the Grasa Lamborghini of Jordan Pepper
00:30:33trying to go around the outside somehow.
00:30:34Then he switches to the inside.
00:30:35Then he goes to the outside again,
00:30:37swarming around like an angry wasp
00:30:39all over the back of the Mercedes.
00:30:40But he cannot find a way past.
00:30:42And he's got to defend from Thomas Pryning
00:30:44as well, who's now trying to inch around
00:30:45the outside of Turn 2 to get the inside line for Turn 3.
00:30:49And he's got eyes everywhere.
00:30:51He could name he's Jordan Pepper at the moment.
00:30:53Well, Thomas Pryning is a bit of a gift for Jules Gouinon
00:30:55because now suddenly the attacker is having to defend.
00:30:58That's allowing Jules Gouinon just to break clear a bit.
00:31:01But the car that has been leading the race up until now
00:31:04suddenly down in third place.
00:31:06A masterstroke by Ian Changun and René Rast.
00:31:09They've got the jump through the pit stop sequence.
00:31:12Our pole sitter and early race leaders down into third.
00:31:15I spoke to Ian, Jen, yesterday.
00:31:17Sorry, this morning, about yesterday.
00:31:19I said, have you changed the setup?
00:31:20You didn't qualify as well yesterday.
00:31:21You qualified fourth today.
00:31:23He said, no, not really.
00:31:24He said it was just a bit of a mistake from me in qualifying.
00:31:27Doesn't take much to lose positions in the DTM.
00:31:30So we've been happy with the car all weekend long.
00:31:33I said, you're overdue a win in the DTM.
00:31:34He said, well, I'm not really thinking about race wins.
00:31:36I'm just trying to think about being consistent this year.
00:31:39That's been our problem for the last two years.
00:31:41I haven't had consistency throughout the course
00:31:43of a season.
00:31:44Well, rethink, Ian, Jen, because you are leading the DTM race.
00:31:48And you've got your nose in front.
00:31:50And we know it's not easy to get past here.
00:31:52There is one small issue, though,
00:31:54and that's that we've got another round of pit stops
00:31:55to come.
00:31:56But great to see the Turkish driver,
00:31:58former double French Porsche champion,
00:32:01as we see Niki Thiem off the road.
00:32:04And now, is that a mechanical?
00:32:06Has he gone off?
00:32:07Looks like he might have just parked the car, doesn't it?
00:32:08Yeah, it does, doesn't it?
00:32:09Let's have a look here.
00:32:10One of the McLarens that he was running with, that was Bendur.
00:32:14So he goes out wide, out of the corner,
00:32:16a contact between the two.
00:32:17So I'm wondering whether something
00:32:19has broken on that car.
00:32:20I'm just looking at the right rear.
00:32:22If that had already started to go,
00:32:23I think it's down on the right rear.
00:32:25Yeah, it was already down, wasn't it?
00:32:26Yeah, so he's either got a right rear puncture
00:32:28or suspension is puncture-like.
00:32:29That was why he went wide in the first place.
00:32:31So it wasn't because of that contact
00:32:33on the way out of the corner.
00:32:34It had already started to go from him.
00:32:36So then he's parked it up at the next corner.
00:32:38Oh, Niki Thiem.
00:32:39Oh, and then that is Gilles Magnus
00:32:41in the other Aston Martin, the sole remaining Aston Martin,
00:32:45destroying the circuit furniture
00:32:47and also destroying the circuit furniture is Timo Glock.
00:32:49There goes another of the bottle artists with a chicane.
00:32:51And then, oh, my goodness me,
00:32:53Maurice Schuring, no idea where he's going, I shouldn't think,
00:32:55because he's absolutely covered in dust.
00:32:57And that was where the Aston Martin then went wide.
00:32:59You see that so often.
00:33:00Somebody who runs wide, they're bringing dust onto the track.
00:33:02And then others behind them have no grip and run wide.
00:33:05And that wasn't the end of the battles and wars
00:33:07and battle scars for Timo Glock, was it?
00:33:09He went then, contacted through the gravel.
00:33:11Welcome back, Timo.
00:33:12No respect here, is there, in the DTM
00:33:14for a five-time DTM winner
00:33:15and a three-time podium finisher in Formula 1.
00:33:18Guen leads.
00:33:19Rast, remember, started 15th, Brian, second in the race.
00:33:24Yes, there's a man on a mission,
00:33:26and they really worked the pit stop strategy
00:33:28to absolute perfection there, didn't they?
00:33:31We all thought they were going to get caught and passed
00:33:33by Jules Guenon and Jordan Pepper,
00:33:34but they've got the heat into the tires
00:33:36and were able to hold on to that first and second.
00:33:39Right, incident between 84 and 16 under investigation.
00:33:43Well, that'll be Tom Callender and Timo Glock,
00:33:45so that's under investigation by the race stewards as well.
00:33:48Here's our race leader, Ian Chenguun,
00:33:501.6 seconds clear of second place, Rene Rast.
00:33:55According to our timing screen,
00:33:56Ian Chenguun had a 9.4-second stationary time
00:33:59at his pit stop, which is not good,
00:34:01but he's leading the race.
00:34:03So if that stat is correct,
00:34:05he must have had one heck of an in-lap
00:34:06and one heck of an out-lap to still get in front,
00:34:09having given away a few seconds at the pit stop
00:34:11and pulled away. Brilliant.
00:34:13Yeah, absolutely brilliant.
00:34:15And it's those in-laps and out-laps
00:34:17that really count, isn't it?
00:34:18And Rene Rast as well.
00:34:20But look at the gap he's already pulling.
00:34:22So penalty lap three times for Tom Callender
00:34:26for causing a collision with Timo Glock.
00:34:28So he will have to visit the penalty box
00:34:30on the exit of Turn 3 is to drive through that
00:34:32at no more than 50 kilometers an hour.
00:34:34It is a 50-meter box.
00:34:35It's going to be the equivalent to adding about 15 seconds
00:34:38to the time of Tom Callender.
00:34:41Youngest driver and the oldest driver in the field
00:34:42coming together.
00:34:44Last time Timo Glock was racing in the DTM,
00:34:47Tom Callender was 13 years old.
00:34:49He's only 17 now.
00:34:50But that's going to be, yeah,
00:34:53going to cost him 15 seconds, essentially.
00:34:56He's going to drop Tom Callender right down the order.
00:34:59Right, let's take a breather
00:35:00and get some reaction in the pit lane with Verena.
00:35:04I'm here with Martin Tomczyk from ABT.
00:35:06Can you tell us what exactly happened with Niki Thiem?
00:35:09Any news you already got?
00:35:11Well, Niki got a push from the back on the rear right tyre
00:35:16and obviously already mid-corner,
00:35:18he got a puncture of this push.
00:35:22And obviously when he came back from the kerb,
00:35:25the car was not really controllable
00:35:27and then it was a contact there,
00:35:29but it already happened earlier in the corner.
00:35:32Thank you very much, Martin. Back to you.
00:35:34Thanks very much, Verena. Good to hear that.
00:35:36Martin Tomczyk, ex-DTM champion himself,
00:35:38team principal at ABT,
00:35:40serving one of his three runs through that penalty box.
00:35:43On the exit to turn three, it's marked out.
00:35:45You have to go through it at 50 kilometers an hour
00:35:48and it all told costs you five seconds.
00:35:51So three visits through there.
00:35:53But great pit stop by Mantae for Thomas Pryning
00:35:56and he was really battling away, wasn't he, trying to get through.
00:35:59But ultimately, didn't quite manage
00:36:03to get as high up the order as he might have.
00:36:04And the same is probably true of Ricciardo Fella.
00:36:06For a moment, it looked like he might be knocking on the door of the podium
00:36:09through that end of the pit stop phase.
00:36:12But it's Guen that leads, Rast in second.
00:36:14Gunon will be miffed to be back in third.
00:36:16Pepper is fourth. He's lost two places.
00:36:18Pryning, fifth. He gained one over all of that.
00:36:21Wittmann, sixth place.
00:36:23The BMWs have done really well there
00:36:24thanks to Schubert's pit stop strategy.
00:36:26Ricciardo Fella, Luca Engster,
00:36:27Thierry Vermeulen and Mauro Engel round out the top ten.
00:36:30The defending champion, Mirko Bortolotti, is back in 12th place.
00:36:34This is where he started yesterday's race.
00:36:37We saw some shots there of poor old Niki Thiem
00:36:39looking pretty forlorn.
00:36:41It wasn't too kind to him this circuit last year, was it, Brian?
00:36:44He had a big crash in qualifying here 12 months ago.
00:36:47Yeah, he'll be pleased to move on to Lausitzring, won't he?
00:36:50As far as our race leader goes,
00:36:51Ayan Cangguun now 2.352 clear.
00:36:54We've been saying all along since we got here, actually,
00:36:58how confident Ayan Cangguun has been looking,
00:37:00how dialed in.
00:37:02He just needed to maybe just raise his game a bit
00:37:05from last year.
00:37:06He had a lot of bad luck last year,
00:37:07but he really has been looking dialed in
00:37:10in every session we've had.
00:37:11Now extending his legs at the front,
00:37:14but really good to see the very likable driver
00:37:18just pushing it at the front.
00:37:19René Rast, not really able to do anything about it at the moment.
00:37:23Jean Gounon, our pole sitter, in third place.
00:37:25Jordan Pepper, who was challenging for the lead just now,
00:37:28is in fourth with Thomas Prine in for company.
00:37:31Ben Durr under investigation,
00:37:33involved in that incident with Niki Thiem.
00:37:35So both drivers under investigation.
00:37:37Obviously, Niki's out of the race anyway.
00:37:39And let's get some team radio.
00:37:42OK, we have to do three times the penalty lip,
00:37:46and now 11th drive.
00:37:47Three times penalty lip.
00:37:49That was not my fault.
00:37:52Not my fault, says Tom Cullander.
00:37:54But the officials have spoken, I'm afraid,
00:37:57so he feels a bit miffed about that.
00:37:59Still sounds very laid back, doesn't he?
00:38:01He's a super chilled out guy.
00:38:03We haven't had any swearing on team radio so far this year.
00:38:05Fingers crossed.
00:38:06Very well behaved.
00:38:08Now, further back, just a quick mention for Arjun Maini.
00:38:12He's back in the points, despite starting
00:38:13near the back of the grid.
00:38:14He's in 14th place, got the first point
00:38:17for the Ford Mustang yesterday on its debut.
00:38:19And Jack Aitken came out of all that pretty well.
00:38:22He's up to 15, so he's got one point.
00:38:25Of course, won't be happy to be 15th,
00:38:26but given where he was, he actually
00:38:28lost places on that first lap of the race as well.
00:38:30He was back, I think, to 20th or 21st place
00:38:33at the end of lap one.
00:38:34So he might get something out of this yet.
00:38:36His Ferrari compatriot, Ben Green, is with him as well.
00:38:3916th.
00:38:41The other Ferrari was another one
00:38:43that dropped back in that pit stop phase, wasn't it?
00:38:44Thierry Vermeulen, third on the grid,
00:38:46dropped to fifth on lap one.
00:38:47After the pit stop phase, he's dropped to ninth place now.
00:38:50The battle for second place is, well,
00:38:53I should think that quite a few of these drivers
00:38:54are suddenly thinking, hmm, the second pit stop
00:38:56might just work in my favor.
00:38:58Look at that.
00:38:58Second, third, fourth, and fifth.
00:39:00You've got Rast, you've got Gunon, you've got Pepper,
00:39:03you've got an Aston Martin there with a wing mirror trailing.
00:39:07That calls Gilles Magnus in the Come to You Racing Aston Martin.
00:39:11It's been a steep learning curve for the team.
00:39:14Great to have them here this weekend on their debut in DTM,
00:39:17but a bit of damage there to the sole remaining Aston Martin.
00:39:20But the fight for second place also there in that queue
00:39:25is Thomas Pryning, then a gap back to Marco Wittmann.
00:39:28But this is quite interesting, this fight for second.
00:39:31Gottfried Grasser who runs the Grasser Racing team,
00:39:33the two Lamborghinis of Jordan Pepper and Luca Engster
00:39:37set before this weekend.
00:39:39With this second pit stop strategy,
00:39:40there are 18 different pit stop strategies that you can have.
00:39:44One of these drivers trying to force his way through there
00:39:46is Jordan Pepper, trying almost alongside Gilles Gunon
00:39:49on the exit to the previous corner.
00:39:51Right behind them with the on-board camera
00:39:52is Thomas Pryning.
00:39:53But Gunon is controlling the race.
00:39:55The Turkish driver.
00:39:56Could we have history?
00:39:57A first-ever Turkish winner in the DTM.
00:39:59Rennie Rast in second place.
00:40:00Julgen on third.
00:40:02Fourth Pepper, fifth Pryning, sixth Wittmann
00:40:04having a pretty good weekend here.
00:40:06Feller in seventh.
00:40:07Engsler eighth.
00:40:08Vermeulen ninth.
00:40:09Engel tenth.
00:40:09And Auri's eleventh.
00:40:10Bortolotti twelfth.
00:40:11Dürer is thirteenth.
00:40:13Meini fourteenth.
00:40:14And Aitken in fifteenth.
00:40:15The other drivers in the points.
00:40:16And we're a minute or so away from the second pit window
00:40:20opening, and that's just going to be for six minutes.
00:40:23And after that, we'll only have 10 minutes plus three
00:40:26laps of racing, effectively.
00:40:27So it's going to be a sprint to the flag.
00:40:29I don't want to tell you, I'm actually
00:40:30a bit nervous about this second window.
00:40:33I think everybody is a little bit.
00:40:35What some great shots of our drone
00:40:36here heading out towards Hasselrode turn three.
00:40:40There is the gap evolution between second and third.
00:40:43Rennie Rast and Julgen.
00:40:44I still feel as Gunon is probably
00:40:45thinking, what just happened?
00:40:47Because I was leading this.
00:40:49How am I in third place?
00:40:52Yeah, but there's an opportunity
00:40:53to turn it around again in the next pit stop,
00:40:55isn't there?
00:40:56Which is where we're headed now.
00:40:57Let's hear from Verena.
00:40:59It's very unfortunate for Timo Glock.
00:41:02Timo, we just found out Tom Callender
00:41:03got a three time penalty lap.
00:41:06I guess that was one of the reasons
00:41:07why you had to end the race.
00:41:11Actually, I don't know who hit me.
00:41:13I got a couple of hits, and it felt
00:41:15like the second race here was more like a war
00:41:17than anything else out there.
00:41:20But I just wanted to keep my car clean,
00:41:24because it was anyway clear that we're not
00:41:26going to finish the race.
00:41:27We wanted to do two pit stops for the guys
00:41:29and then stop the car.
00:41:30Because the car is just such a fundamental problem
00:41:33that it doesn't make any sense to drive
00:41:35in circles for nothing.
00:41:37And yeah, after I got hit twice or three times,
00:41:41we decided to stop already.
00:41:42So yeah, not an easy weekend for us.
00:41:47Not the comeback I wanted to have,
00:41:49but I think we have a clear plan and a clear strategy
00:41:52to sort out the car, the problem we have with it,
00:41:55which is pretty fundamental, as I said.
00:41:57I mean, on the other side, Ben, and this
00:42:01was planned to understand where we are.
00:42:03I got a new car last week, and he rolled it out on Friday,
00:42:06and it works.
00:42:07So in my car, it doesn't work at all like a race car
00:42:10should work, and that's where we need to get on top of it.
00:42:13All right.
00:42:13Thank you very much, Timo.
00:42:15Back to you.
00:42:15Yeah, very disappointing for Timo Glock.
00:42:18So we can just use it as a pit stop practice.
00:42:20We didn't even get to do that.
00:42:20We saw an Aston Martin wing mirror
00:42:22from the number seven Aston of Gilles Magnus
00:42:26has detached itself from the car.
00:42:27It's in the middle of the track, and the second pit window
00:42:29is now open.
00:42:30Lucas Sauer was the first one in.
00:42:32You got Jack Aitken and Gilles Magnus in as well.
00:42:34So a roll of the dice here, really, from Lucas Sauer.
00:42:38And he might as well, because he's the championship leader
00:42:40coming into this race, but he's back out of the top 10
00:42:43before this window.
00:42:44And the good thing about coming into the pits
00:42:47first where he was in the order is
00:42:49that he knows he's going to come out with a completely
00:42:51clear track in front of him, because everybody else
00:42:53is around about 2 thirds of a lap ahead of him.
00:42:55There should be nothing behind him.
00:42:57But the issue might be when he's flying,
00:42:58once he's got his tires up to temperature,
00:43:00he might have cars coming out in front of him
00:43:02about that pit lane exit with cold tires getting in his way.
00:43:05This is a sticky pit stop, isn't it,
00:43:07for come to your racing, the rears, then the front.
00:43:09But it has got a bit of damage to that car
00:43:12with that wing mirror and that run across the gravel.
00:43:14So that's taken a bit of time.
00:43:15But the Aston Martin is now on its way.
00:43:18So Lucas Sauer is the leading pit stopper by some distance.
00:43:22He's just headed towards turn four.
00:43:25Jack Aitken has come out as the second of the pit stoppers.
00:43:28He's just coming through turn three at the moment.
00:43:31And then third in the order, but still to make
00:43:34it his pit stop, of course, is the number 90
00:43:36car of Iain Gingouin.
00:43:38Yeah, of course, Edmund Frey Racing
00:43:40have got an additional problem of three cars
00:43:42to filter through the pit box in the six-minute windows.
00:43:45They've got rid of one-third of the problem.
00:43:47The other two-thirds still to come.
00:43:48Right, Mauro Engel, who still holds
00:43:51the record for the fastest lap, was back on lap 13.
00:43:53But there's a lot of speed in that Mercedes.
00:43:56He has his change.
00:43:57That's still ongoing.
00:43:59Out comes the Lamborghini as well.
00:44:01So out into the pit lane they come.
00:44:04That wasn't a good stop for Engel, was it?
00:44:0511.1 seconds.
00:44:07So Bortolotti's leapfrogged him.
00:44:09Yeah, absolutely.
00:44:10So Mirko Bortolotti out.
00:44:12Into the pit lane, he's going to join.
00:44:14And is that Lucas Auer coming along the pit straight?
00:44:17It might just be.
00:44:19So the first of the pitters, he's
00:44:21going to have his tires well up to temperature.
00:44:23And he's going to catch the other two fairly
00:44:25quickly in the background.
00:44:26Our current leader, Iain Gingouin.
00:44:28There's Rene Rast a little way back.
00:44:30There's Jack Aitken in between them.
00:44:32But don't forget that all of them, apart from Jack Aitken,
00:44:34still have to stop.
00:44:35Avoid the wing mirror, please.
00:44:36We don't need more damage.
00:44:37Thank you very much.
00:44:38Yeah, it was important for Iain Gingouin
00:44:40to get past Jack Aitken.
00:44:41He was on cold tires, pretty sharp.
00:44:43It's Lucas Auer doesn't have any trouble getting past Maro
00:44:46Engel, who's getting his tires up to temperature as well.
00:44:49So the leading pit stopper is Mirko Bortolotti.
00:44:54Lucas Auer is coming after him.
00:44:56He's bringing with him just behind Maro Engel,
00:44:58who's on cold tires as well.
00:45:00And there's a big gap back to the actual race leader.
00:45:02They're at turn seven.
00:45:03Coming into turn five now, Iain Gingouin, Rene Rast,
00:45:07and Juergen on the top three.
00:45:09This is the car in fifth place, Thomas Pryning.
00:45:11He's as quick as those in front, but he
00:45:13can't find a way past.
00:45:14With only two minutes, 10 seconds of the pit window
00:45:17remaining, still an awful lot of cars to come in.
00:45:19It's going to get very busy in the next couple of minutes,
00:45:22isn't it?
00:45:22Including all the lead pack on board with Thomas Pryning.
00:45:26So both of the, well, the two of the Mantai cars
00:45:29have got to come in.
00:45:31There is Fabio Scherrer.
00:45:33He's all done and dusted for the day.
00:45:35But it's all still yet to happen for quite a few of the,
00:45:39well, 14 of the cars that are out on track.
00:45:41Right.
00:45:42Any of our leaders going to come in?
00:45:43Gingouin, no.
00:45:44What about Rast?
00:45:46No.
00:45:47No.
00:45:48Yes for Thomas Pryning.
00:45:49Yes for Marco Wittmann.
00:45:51Yes for Ricciardo, fella.
00:45:53And in as well, right, I mean, right behind him
00:45:56is Luca Engsler.
00:45:57Hello.
00:45:57Give you a little tap on the shoulder, I will.
00:46:00Could you please get into the pit lane as quickly as possible?
00:46:02Because I want to get past you.
00:46:04So Engsler, as close as he possibly
00:46:06can be to the back of the Audi.
00:46:08Ricciardo glances in the mirror.
00:46:10Oh, hello, Luca, he says.
00:46:11You're with me, are you?
00:46:12I see.
00:46:13So here he comes.
00:46:14You've also got Vermeulen, Doerr, Meini, Powell,
00:46:17and Schöring in.
00:46:17So you're right.
00:46:18It's going to be busy.
00:46:18It could be even busier on the next lap, isn't it?
00:46:21Yeah, we'll have some coming in, some coming out.
00:46:23They've got a minute.
00:46:23Of course, any mistakes on the lap for those out on track
00:46:26and they don't get back in time, there'd be a penalty.
00:46:29But here we go.
00:46:29There's Luc Engsler into the pit as well.
00:46:33Thomas Pryning having his change done.
00:46:35There's Thierry Vermeulen off the jack.
00:46:37So he rejoins, finds a gap out in the fast lane.
00:46:39Marco Wittmann, there's our helmet cam once again.
00:46:42The brake dust comes pouring out.
00:46:44The tire goes on.
00:46:45He is released, and away goes Marco Wittmann.
00:46:48So Bortolotti, who's the leading pit stopper,
00:46:50just coming out of turn 12, looking at the track map.
00:46:53He's got Lucas Auer breathing down his neck.
00:46:55And about a second or so back, Maro Engel.
00:46:58And then behind them, the on-track race leader,
00:47:00yet to pit but about to, I think.
00:47:02He's going to have to, isn't he?
00:47:03Because we're 25 seconds away from the pit window closing.
00:47:06His engine, Gouen.
00:47:07Jack Aitken is behind him, but a lap down.
00:47:10And then you've got René Rast.
00:47:12And they're all about to come diving in.
00:47:15Chaos is about to ensue, because you've
00:47:18got some coming out of the pits.
00:47:19You've got a train of them about to come into the pits.
00:47:21They're all diving now.
00:47:22Gouen has come into the pits.
00:47:24Here is Marco Bortolotti versus Lucas Auer.
00:47:27And in front of them, they're going
00:47:28to try and catch that group up.
00:47:30They're on the cold tires, and they're
00:47:32being led, those that have made their second pit
00:47:34stop by Thomas Pryning.
00:47:35This is Bender and Thierry Vermeulen,
00:47:37two young drivers going side by side.
00:47:39Nice move.
00:47:40And out wide goes the Ferrari.
00:47:43Thierry Vermeulen skids wide, skids through the gravel trap,
00:47:46just about drags it back.
00:47:47But he's lost a ton of time.
00:47:49And here is your race leader in.
00:47:50Rears changed first, then the fronts.
00:47:53Manti, another good pit stop from them.
00:47:55Jules Gounon comes in as well.
00:47:57He's got to make the stop for Gouen.
00:47:59The pit stop was pretty good.
00:48:00Not quite as good as the first one, but 7.2 seconds.
00:48:03This is really significant now.
00:48:05There's René Rast's crew on to work as well on that car.
00:48:08Gets that front wheel bolted up and ready and released.
00:48:11But you'd already seen Ainshane Gouen coming past
00:48:14when Jules Gounon was pulling into his pit box.
00:48:16So Jordan Pepper right up behind Jules Gounon now.
00:48:20They both got ahead of Rastler in the pits.
00:48:22Rastler's lost out to both Gounon
00:48:24and the Lamborghini of Pepper.
00:48:26We've got a potential for a Manti 1-2
00:48:28here because the leading pit stopper about to scream
00:48:30into turn one is Thomas Pryning.
00:48:32Here he comes.
00:48:33The Grelo missile is on its way.
00:48:35His teammate on cold tires is just about to go to turn three.
00:48:39And in between them, three cars.
00:48:42So it is still leading the race.
00:48:44But on cold tires, the Turkish driver,
00:48:46looking to make history here in the DTM.
00:48:48The green Porsche makes its way through to turn four.
00:48:52Ainshane Gouen followed by Jules Gounon,
00:48:54followed by Jordan Pepper, followed by René Rastler
00:48:56coming after them all on warm tires.
00:48:58Now it's Thomas Pryning on board with Rast.
00:49:01Still a great result from where he started,
00:49:02but a podium, maybe a second,
00:49:04maybe a win was on the cards before all of this.
00:49:06But here comes Thomas Pryning on grippier, warmer tires
00:49:10all the way around the outside.
00:49:12And four championship titles between them.
00:49:14But Pryning's done it again.
00:49:15And now he wants to get past the Grasa Lamborghini.
00:49:18He's going to have to wait, wait, wait,
00:49:19get on the throttle, get through now.
00:49:21Pepper desperately trying to control all that horsepower
00:49:24and get the traction laid.
00:49:25And now going defensive, really defensive,
00:49:27still trying to generate heat into the tires.
00:49:29Has Pryning got through or not?
00:49:31Yes, he has.
00:49:32Thomas Pryning gets past the Lamborghini as well.
00:49:34Wow.
00:49:35Mantai 1-3 after the pit stop sequence.
00:49:38Jules Gounon's managed to move back up into that second place.
00:49:41But Thomas Pryning pouncing.
00:49:43He had the heat in the tires.
00:49:45Everybody else desperately weaving,
00:49:47trying to generate the heat.
00:49:48But it was advantage, Thomas Pryning,
00:49:50as he moves up to third place on Team Radio.
00:49:53Good job, good job.
00:49:54Come on, come on.
00:49:56You don't need to motivate Thomas Pryning, let me tell you.
00:49:59One of the most determined characters I've ever met.
00:50:01So the Austrian.
00:50:02At the start of the weekend, I reckon
00:50:04they would have been thinking we should be getting a race win
00:50:06here, because the quickest in the practice session,
00:50:08the test session here, Andre Slaven.
00:50:10Hasn't quite happened for Tommy yet.
00:50:12But could he at least get a podium out of this?
00:50:15And his teammate is on course for a race win, a maiden
00:50:19victory in the championship.
00:50:20Engine Gou and Leeds.
00:50:21In between them is the Mercedes of Jules Gounon.
00:50:24Started first, he dropped to third in the first pit stop.
00:50:27He's got one of them back.
00:50:28So second place.
00:50:29But Gounon, when you start on pole,
00:50:31he's still not going to be happy.
00:50:32He's going to be second in the race.
00:50:33But he also said to me earlier on,
00:50:36I know it's about consistency as well.
00:50:37It's not just about trying to win races.
00:50:40And it looks like he is going to be super consistent.
00:50:42Jules Gounon is a huge fan of DTM racing and racing.
00:50:45He showed me earlier on a photograph
00:50:47of his collection of race suits, including some DTM race suits.
00:50:51He's got over 50 race suits from racing drivers.
00:50:54While we were talking, Mike Rockenfeller,
00:50:56ex-DTM champion, 2013 champion, who is doing TV coverage here
00:51:00for German television, rocked up and said, oh,
00:51:03you haven't got mine.
00:51:03Would you like it?
00:51:05Yes, please.
00:51:05And Mike said, only if I can have one of yours in return.
00:51:08Send me a text.
00:51:10He might be up to 51 race suits soon.
00:51:12Amazing.
00:51:13But Jules says they're running out of space.
00:51:15And his partner, Michelle, is saying, you need to stop this.
00:51:18There's no more room in the house.
00:51:20We need to move into a warehouse there.
00:51:23Jordan Peppers had a warning from race control
00:51:26for more than one change of direction
00:51:27to defend his position.
00:51:29We saw that a little bit earlier.
00:51:31So black and white flag has been shown to him.
00:51:33Jules Gounod with a teeny bit of damage to the car.
00:51:36Just saw some, you can see some bodywork
00:51:38trailing a little bit lower down at the side of the car.
00:51:41But doesn't seem to be slowing him too much.
00:51:43But Thomas Breining, man on a mission last time around,
00:51:48was significantly faster than Jules Gounod.
00:51:51So Thomas Breining is not done yet.
00:51:53You said, could it be a Manta EMA 1-2?
00:51:56Thomas Breining very much would like
00:51:58to do something about that.
00:51:59He's got five and a half minutes to get past the yellow Mamba.
00:52:02Jules Gounod making that Mercedes AMG as wide as he can,
00:52:05bumping across the chicane, but still in that second place.
00:52:10Mario Engels' race has sort of fallen away, hasn't it?
00:52:12He's back in 12th.
00:52:13The pit stops didn't do him any favor.
00:52:15The first one was looking OK, but that just
00:52:17lost about three seconds in that second pit stop.
00:52:19So it has fallen away from him a bit.
00:52:21The Ferraris are all in the points now.
00:52:23Albeit, Vermeulen's had a really rough race, hasn't he,
00:52:25from third on the grid.
00:52:26He's back in 13th.
00:52:27He's back in 14th, which is a bit of a save from where
00:52:29he was after lap one.
00:52:31And Green is in the points as well,
00:52:32about to pick up potentially his first DTM point,
00:52:35having thought he was going to start on pole yesterday
00:52:37until he was disqualified for being underweight.
00:52:39Had to start at the back, got through to 18th.
00:52:41But he's on course at least to try and get a point if he can.
00:52:46In terms of the championship, then, by quick calculations,
00:52:50it would be 37 points for Jordan Pepper.
00:52:53Oh, here we go.
00:52:54Or would it?
00:52:56I was going to say 34 apiece for Gunnar.
00:52:58And no, fends him off as it stands.
00:53:00He holds on to it.
00:53:01So 34 points apiece for Gunnar and Auer.
00:53:04And then Pryning's going to be on 30 points as it stands.
00:53:08I know you talk about the championship,
00:53:09but it shows how close it's going to be this season.
00:53:12Gunnar just about fended off Pryning there.
00:53:14They've left Pepper, haven't they?
00:53:16He's dropped back from them.
00:53:17Rast in fifth, Wittmann in sixth.
00:53:19If you'd sent to René Rast and Marco Wittmann
00:53:20at the start of the race, you'd be fifth and sixth.
00:53:22They've definitely taken that.
00:53:23Although René Rast will be thinking,
00:53:25I was running a bit further forward than that just now.
00:53:27I think we can say the second pit stop certainly
00:53:30has added a bit of excitement to the race.
00:53:32Julgunon would love it if the race was a little bit shorter.
00:53:35To remind you, we've got a couple of additional laps
00:53:38to the 55 plus 1 lap.
00:53:41We've got two laps on top of that, courtesy of the safety car.
00:53:44You saw that damage, a little bit low down
00:53:46on the right rear of Julgunon's car.
00:53:48You can see that's just flapping in the breeze a little bit.
00:53:51He's fended off Thomas Pryning for the time being.
00:53:53He had the nose on the inside for a bit,
00:53:56but now Thomas Pryning has backed out of it.
00:53:58Is he winding himself up for one more attack?
00:54:01Time's starting to run out.
00:54:02It is less than three and a half minutes
00:54:04plus three laps remaining in this race.
00:54:07Guen leads. He's going to get 25 points for the win.
00:54:09He'd be on 34 points as well.
00:54:11I reckon it's going to be 37 for Pepe.
00:54:12He'd be the championship leader after the first weekend.
00:54:15And we'd have three drivers,
00:54:17Auer, Gunon, and also Guen,
00:54:20also on 34 points, tied for second in the championship.
00:54:25So brilliant stuff.
00:54:26It would also mean in six GT3 class races for DTM here,
00:54:31this was how close it was with Pryning and Gunon.
00:54:33Might have been a helping hand there, don't you?
00:54:34Yeah, in six races in the GT3 era,
00:54:37we'd have had six different winners as it stands.
00:54:40And Guen, looking like being the latest of them,
00:54:43he looks completely in control to me at the front of the field,
00:54:45looking for his maiden victory in the DTM
00:54:48from a Benelux Porsche champion,
00:54:49Porsche French champion twice as well.
00:54:52Third season of DTM, third full season of DTM for him.
00:54:57And it would be fantastic to see
00:54:58because we always knew the potential was there.
00:55:00He's got a great record coming into this.
00:55:02He knows Porsche's inside, out, and backwards.
00:55:04But he's had some bad luck over the last couple of years.
00:55:07And the results really have reflected how good a driver he is.
00:55:10It's nice to see Guen leading the race.
00:55:13Turkey will be tuned in,
00:55:15the whole of the country watching this
00:55:17and praying for these laps to go as quickly as possible
00:55:19because their man is on his way to victory.
00:55:21Two minutes, five seconds plus three laps remaining of this race.
00:55:26Ayn Can Guen from Turkey leading the way.
00:55:28What is the gap between first and second?
00:55:30It is 3.6 seconds.
00:55:32So, Guen just stretching his legs at the front,
00:55:35looks to have it all under control.
00:55:37Jorgunon looking a little bit more vulnerable
00:55:40in that second place.
00:55:41Thomas Pryning, teammate to the race leader in third place.
00:55:44Jordan Pepper not out of it either at the moment.
00:55:47He's still got them in sight.
00:55:48Rene Rast is there.
00:55:49Marco Wittmann, Luca Engster.
00:55:51Remember, he won here this time last year.
00:55:53Ben Durr, great job in eighth place.
00:55:56Defending champion, Mirko Bortolotti in ninth.
00:55:58And yesterday's winner, Lucas Auer,
00:56:00rounding out the top ten.
00:56:02Ben Green's got some clear track in front of him.
00:56:04And he's the quickest man on the circuit at the moment.
00:56:06He's just done a 1.23.2.
00:56:08The race leader was slower than all those behind him,
00:56:10but Guen's got an advantage.
00:56:13A 1.24.0 for Guenon.
00:56:161.23.9 for Pryning and Pepper and Rast.
00:56:20So it's edging up slightly.
00:56:22Guenon is not going to have an easy run to the flag here.
00:56:24Definitely not with Thomas Pryning behind him.
00:56:26But Pryning, a fair driver.
00:56:28He wouldn't do anything reckless.
00:56:29And he's also got this points record to think about as well.
00:56:33Because every race in 2024, every race in 2023,
00:56:37and every race so far this year, he's finished in the points.
00:56:39It's a record.
00:56:41And this would be his 34th consecutive race
00:56:44finishing in the points, extending the record
00:56:46that he has developed over the last two years, a DTM record.
00:56:49So he knows points matter as well.
00:56:52He's already on the podium.
00:56:54Is it going to be worth the risk to get
00:56:55a few more points in second place?
00:56:57You don't want to take each other out, do you?
00:56:59So he really hasn't got an opportunity yet.
00:57:02He had that one half chance, didn't he, a couple of laps ago.
00:57:04But Guenon's not really making any mistakes.
00:57:06It's just about time management now.
00:57:08Yeah, have we seen the best from Thomas Pryning
00:57:10in this race now?
00:57:11Has Jules Guenon got this under control?
00:57:13There are 47,000 spectators on the bankings
00:57:17and on the grandstands having a look,
00:57:19watching down at this unique old school circuit
00:57:22to see whether Thomas Pryning can steal away
00:57:25second place from Jules Guenon.
00:57:27At the moment, Ian Chang-Kuen, barring mistakes
00:57:30and mechanical failures, looks to have this under control.
00:57:333.298 is the gap between first and second.
00:57:37So all in control at the front.
00:57:39But this is the fight for second place.
00:57:41It's not over yet.
00:57:43Gottfried Grasser's team are going to walk away
00:57:45from the weekend with a championship leader
00:57:47like they did with Luca Encksel last year.
00:57:48But this time, it's going to be Jordan Pepe.
00:57:50It's ironically going to be his worst resort
00:57:53of the weekend so far
00:57:54because he's been second in every single session,
00:57:56qualifying, his free practices, races.
00:57:58He's fourth at the moment, but a second and a fourth,
00:58:01plus the points he picked up in qualifying,
00:58:03another four from two front row starts,
00:58:05means he's going to be the championship leader, by my maths,
00:58:08as we go on board with Ricciardo Fella,
00:58:10who, again, in the middle of the race,
00:58:12after that first pit stop,
00:58:13like he might be on for a top four,
00:58:15but he's back out of the top ten.
00:58:18They focus, maybe they do a mistake.
00:58:22Ninth place for Mirko Bortolotti,
00:58:24where he ended up yesterday's race,
00:58:25so a couple of ninths.
00:58:27But the team said to me,
00:58:29they can't, the fundamental issue they've got,
00:58:31they can't change it here.
00:58:32So it's damage limitation here.
00:58:34They're going to have to go away and get it sorted.
00:58:35But remember Kelvin van der Linde,
00:58:37the cracked chassis here last year,
00:58:39which they didn't discover until afterwards.
00:58:41It's not, that's not the issue for them at the moment
00:58:42with the Lamborghini,
00:58:43but they had a bad start to the season.
00:58:45They still wound up really fighting for the championship
00:58:48and almost winning it.
00:58:49So long way to go.
00:58:51They won't panic yet at Abt,
00:58:52but not the start to the season they wanted.
00:58:54Certainly not for Niki Thiem.
00:58:55He's had four races in the DTM at this circuit now.
00:58:58None of them have been in the points, three retirements
00:59:00and a non-point scoring result as well yesterday.
00:59:03So real frustration for Niki Thiem
00:59:06and for the team in general.
00:59:08But again, Bortolotti very good at picking up points
00:59:10when things aren't quite going his way.
00:59:12So he's ninth at the moment.
00:59:14He's behind Ben Durr,
00:59:15who's on course to better yesterday's results.
00:59:17He's in eighth place in the McLaren.
00:59:19He already got his best result in DTM yesterday
00:59:21with an 11th, now eighth.
00:59:22He's going to extend his lead in the rookie championship,
00:59:25which he qualifies for and doing a fantastic job.
00:59:28And that shows that if they can get this fundamental issue
00:59:30sorted on Timo Glock's car,
00:59:33then he could be competitive as well
00:59:34because that McLaren and Durr Motorsport
00:59:36have made a massive step forward compared to last year.
00:59:38Yes, so they are learning and they are moving forward.
00:59:41So behind Mirko Bortolotti is Lukas Auer
00:59:44and behind Lukas Auer is Ricciardo Fella.
00:59:46He fancies breaking into the top ten.
00:59:48So Fella in that 11th place.
00:59:50You've seen him for the last couple of laps
00:59:51just putting the pressure onto yesterday's winner.
00:59:54Remember, Lukas Auer is carrying
00:59:56that additional success ballast of 20 kilos as well.
00:59:59That won't be helping him.
01:00:00As we look down on the hotel turn,
01:00:02Ricciardo Fella having a look on the outside,
01:00:05ducking back to the inside.
01:00:06Now out towards Hasaroda, turn three.
01:00:09Lukas Auer has that 10th place covered off at the moment,
01:00:12but Ricciardo Fella just seemingly to have
01:00:14a little bit more pace, a little bit more grip.
01:00:17Yes, when you've got that ballast on,
01:00:18you need to get a good qualifying, don't you?
01:00:20You can still get a decent result then,
01:00:21but with Auer not qualifying great
01:00:24and then also having to give up places
01:00:26at the start of the race after the contact with Engel,
01:00:28it's curtailed his race.
01:00:29And of course, Pepper's got 10 kilograms on the Lamborghini
01:00:31after finishing second yesterday.
01:00:33So it's actually a really good result to be in fourth place.
01:00:35It won't feel like it.
01:00:36It'll be a bit frustrated.
01:00:38But with the weight on the car, fourth place,
01:00:40so much potential for things to go wrong
01:00:42with those two pit stops, Brian.
01:00:43It's the sort of race where you think,
01:00:44do you know what, actually, fourth place is OK
01:00:46because it could have been a lot worse.
01:00:48Yes, just absolute survival, isn't it?
01:00:50Right, Ricciardo Fella on team radio.
01:00:57Don't apologize, mate.
01:00:58You're doing a great job and you're entertaining us,
01:01:00so thank you.
01:01:01Sorry, no way to overtake, he said.
01:01:03I wonder if he had an issue there
01:01:04because before he had the team radio,
01:01:05he was putting cables on his radio connection, wasn't he?
01:01:07But he's OK.
01:01:08So final lap of the race here at Oschersleben.
01:01:11Another 3.7 kilometers is all that separates
01:01:16Eugen Guggen, the Turkish driver,
01:01:18with a victory in the DTM and a famous historic victory.
01:01:23It will be.
01:01:24It's going to feel like the longest lap of his life,
01:01:27but he's doing a great job.
01:01:29Guggen is nearly three seconds back in second place,
01:01:32Pryning in third.
01:01:34Just bring it home now.
01:01:35You can cruise around and still take the victory here,
01:01:38Eugen.
01:01:39There's going to be some huge celebrations.
01:01:41He's a really nice guy.
01:01:42He's been here this weekend as well.
01:01:44Manta did a fantastic job in the pit stops
01:01:46to help him and help Thomas Pryning get through the order.
01:01:49So from fourth on the grid, he leads the way,
01:01:52goes through the chicane for the final time, Brian.
01:01:55Absolutely, holding together the very last few corners
01:01:58of this race.
01:01:59And he heads out towards turn 11 and turn 12
01:02:02for the very last time.
01:02:03I should think the heart is racing.
01:02:05The palms will be sweaty.
01:02:07He'll be trying to keep hold of his emotions
01:02:09because Eugen Guggen is on the crest of a first ever win.
01:02:14Out of turn 13, Eugen Guggen into the final corner,
01:02:19about to become a winner in the DTM for the first time.
01:02:22A Turkish driver wins in DTM.
01:02:25Eugen Guggen, you are the victor.
01:02:30DTM race winner, my friend.
01:02:32DTM race winner.
01:02:34Good job, P1.
01:02:38Absolutely fantastic.
01:02:42Sounds chilled.
01:02:44Good job, guys.
01:02:45Good job.
01:02:46Sounds super chilled out, doesn't he?
01:02:48Good job, Eugen.
01:02:49That was brilliant.
01:02:50Absolutely brilliant.
01:02:53Everything that was thrown at him, he dealt with.
01:02:55What was so impressive was his pace on the out lap, wasn't it?
01:02:58The way he was able to keep eating the tires.
01:03:00And there is his teammate, Tommy Pryning,
01:03:02coming straight alongside to say, well done, mate.
01:03:05You got a win.
01:03:06Great day for Mantai, first and third.
01:03:09And Eugen Guggen, victorious.
01:03:11And just like last year, two races, two different winners.
01:03:15DTM continues to deliver.
01:03:17Guggen, Gunon, and Pryning, your top three.
01:03:20Pepper in fourth, though, I reckon,
01:03:21the championship leader at the end of the first weekend.
01:03:24I don't know what you think, Brian,
01:03:25but I think the two-pit stop format works.
01:03:28Oh, I like it.
01:03:29I was a fan from the word go, I have to tell you.
01:03:31But as is always the way, Saturday and Sunday,
01:03:35they may as well be different circuits in different years.
01:03:38I mean, completely different results,
01:03:39and that's what we love.
01:03:40But the second pit stop, yeah, I'm loving it already.
01:03:43I'm a fan.
01:03:45Well done.
01:03:45Thoroughly deserved.
01:03:46Eugen Guggen is the winner.
01:03:48Brilliant.
01:03:49After 40 chaotic, hectic laps of racing,
01:03:53he comes through all of it to win the race by just over 2
01:03:56and 1⁄2 seconds from Eugen Guggen, who
01:03:58is on the podium, remember.
01:04:00So Eugen Guggen gets his first podium in the DTM,
01:04:03only his second weekend at DTM.
01:04:05Tommy Pryning on the podium in third.
01:04:07Jordan Pepper fourth.
01:04:08René Rast, great job from 15th to fifth.
01:04:10Could have been even better at one stage.
01:04:12Marco Wittmann, a really solid weekend with that sixth
01:04:15and the eighth he got yesterday.
01:04:16Luca Engstler, likewise, solid weekend.
01:04:17Seventh, Ben Durr, brilliant in eighth
01:04:19for his best result in DTM.
01:04:21Mirko Bortolotti and Luca Sauer, ninth and 10th.
01:04:24Riccardo Fella, Mauro Engel, Thierry Vermeulen, Jack Aitken,
01:04:26and Ben Green were the other ones to finish.
