00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and in this week's show, we'll be reflecting on Brighton & Hove Albion's 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers before we look ahead to the home match versus newly crowned Premier League champions Liverpool.
00:48First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:52A woman has been arrested after a stabbing in Worthing. Photos taken on Wednesday morning showed multiple police vehicles and ambulances in Broadwater Street West.
01:02Sussex Police confirmed a 22-year-old woman was arrested in a suspicion of attempted GBH.
01:06A 28-year-old man who was known to the suspect was taken to hospital for treatment.
01:10His injuries are not believed to be life-restening or life-changing.
01:14An investigation is underway and anyone with information about the incident is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting Serial 398, at the 14th of May.
01:23A man has been jailed for assaulting two police officers.
01:27Sussex Police has confirmed that Andrew Hipkiss was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting emergency workers after an incident in London Road, Brighton, at 9.08am on Thursday, April 10th.
01:36Police said they were called to report of an intoxicated man shouting abuse at members of the public.
01:43Officers promptly attended the location and found the man who refused to provide his details.
01:47He then resisted arrest, being verbally and physically violent towards officers, and ran off.
01:51A nearby member of the public witnessed the pursuit and stuck out his leg in a bid to stop him, allowing officers to make an arrest.
01:57During the struggle, Hipkiss managed to punch and spit at both officers and bite one of them.
02:02They were both taken to hospital to be checked and treated for their injuries.
02:0540-year-old Hipkiss, of no fixed address, appeared before Brighton Magistrates Court on April 11th, where he pleaded guilty to three charges of resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.
02:16He was sentenced to 26 weeks in custody and ordered to pay £200 in compensation.
02:21A wildfire that impacted approximately 8 hectares of Sussex Heathland was likely started by a campfire, the fire service has said.
02:31West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to report for fire at Chapel Common near Milland at 7.50am on Sunday.
02:38Nine fire engines from across West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire attended the incident and remained at the scene until 11pm.
02:44Firefighters returned to the scene on Monday morning to carry out a re-inspection and continued to dampen down the area to ensure there were no further hot spots.
02:53Lane closures on the A27 in East Sussex, which caused weeks of delays for motorists, had been lifted earlier than planned.
03:00National Highway said its work on the A27 in Stammer to improve the drainage, replace barriers and resurfacing progressed well.
03:07The original completion date was June 6th, 10 weeks after the works began, but the works had been finished more than three weeks early.
03:14National Highway said this was by working both day and night shifts, staff were able to reduce the duration of the work and were able to finish early than originally planned.
03:21With the barrier work completed, a series of overnight closures were used to remove the temporary barrier in stages.
03:27This allowed both lanes to open on the westbound A27 on Sunday May 11th and both lanes on the eastbound on Wednesday May 14th.
03:34To remove the temporary barriers, the A27 was closed overnight between 8pm on May 13th and 6am on May 14th.
03:41The final resurfacing work was due to be carried out overnight on Friday May 16th.
03:47A fully signed diversion route was due to be in place by the A23 and the A270.
03:52A luxury beachside property in West Sussex could be won as part of a new prize draw.
03:56One lucky person is guaranteed to win the property, which is worth £4m along with the £250,000 cash prize as part of a new prize draw, raising funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
04:09The property is based in the Arran district of West Sussex, a short stroll away from the villages of East Preston and Rustington.
04:15A spokesperson for fundraising company Omaze said the winner of the Omaze million-pound house draw in Sussex will get the keys to an exquisite four-bedroom property offering panoramic sea views, direct beach access and a hot tub, all set in a desirable coastal setting.
04:30The property comes mortgage-free with all stamp duty and legal fees covered.
04:33The winner was also given a whopping £250,000 in cash to help them settle in and then decide to either live in the house, rent it out for a supplementary income or sell it whenever they wish to become a cash multi-millionaire.
04:45As well as making its grand prize winner a multi-millionaire, the Omaze million-pound house draw will raise funds for the M&D Association.
04:52The partnership with Omaze is backed by actor and the M&D Association patron Eddie Redmayne, who won an Academy Award for his betrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
05:01Okay, we're just outside Bolling You after Brighton's 2-0 victory against Wolves.
05:09Kicks them in the hunt for European position, moves them up to Knight in the tape after a 2-0 victory.
05:16Danny Welbeck put them ahead for the penalty spot in the first half.
05:20A really coolly taken penalty after Matt Swiffer had been fouled by Matthias Kuhner.
05:27A good performance by Matt Swiffer, actually.
05:29He played at right back, but did very well today.
05:32Probably his best game in the Brighton shirt, really, since he joined last summer.
05:39And then it was quite edgy in the second half.
05:43Wolves had their moments.
05:45Barber Bruggan stood up quite well.
05:47Made one good save in particular, very low down to deny Kuhner a leveller.
05:54And at Brighton, they made their changes.
05:57Simon Odingra came off the bench and Brejeg Bruder also came off the bench on the hour.
06:02And it was the two of those that combined to let Albion's decisive second goal in the later stages.
06:10A lovely goal, actually.
06:11Odingra ran at the heart and Wolves' defence teed up Brian Bruder.
06:16And the German dinked it over the keeper for his first goal in a Brighton shirt since joining from German club Maines last summer.
06:26So Fabian Herzella was delighted for Gruder.
06:28He spoke about the tough season that he's had, really.
06:32He hasn't always been in the starting line-up.
06:34He hasn't played that regularly since joining.
06:38And he praised his attitude and his commitment to keep going, even when times were pretty tough for him.
06:45So, all in all, a good performance from Brighton.
06:48They've got two matches left of the season to go.
06:50They welcomed Liverpool to the Amex Stadium.
06:53And then they're away at Tottenham to finish the season.
06:56And a couple of good results could see them up to around about eighth position in the league, which should see them qualify for the conference league football next season.
07:06So, still all to play for for Brighton.
07:09Today's performance keeps them in the hunt for Europe.
07:11And take a look at all the reaction on the Sussex World website, including what Fabian Herzella had to say about the likes of Brasio Gruder,
07:20the brilliant travelling away supporters, and also our player ratings as well will be on the website.
07:24So, thanks for watching. Cheers.
07:27Stay tuned for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
07:54Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
08:08We have a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton and Hove, Albion and Crawley Town.
08:13I'm Matt Poulton.
08:13This week, I'm joined by Brighter Wright and Darren Howard.
08:16Sam Morton, who covers both Seagulls and Crawley Town, as well as Red Devils expert Mark Dunford.
08:21Brighton maintain their push for a place in Europe next season with a 2-0 win over Wolves at Molyneux.
08:26We'll look back at that victory.
08:27Plus, we'll bring you all the latest team news ahead of Albion's home clash with recently crowned champions Liverpool,
08:32as well as all the latest from Crawley Town.
08:34You can read all the stories we were talking about, videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport.
08:39And you can check out other great videos on Shotztv.com and the Freeview Channel 262.
08:43You may also be watching on latest TV, so thank you very much for tuning in.
08:46But we'll start at Molyneux, where Danny Welbeck scored from the penalty spot before half-time.
08:50And substitute Brian Gruda grabbed his first goal from the club late in the second half to keep Albion's European push on track.
08:56By all accounts, Darren, it seemed like a good result and good performance against an informal side.
09:01What did you make of it?
09:02Yeah, they did pretty well.
09:04It was a good result, as you say, and it keeps them in the mix for European football now.
09:10It keeps them up in ninth place, two games to go, and they need eighth place, probably, to get the conference league spot.
09:18So in that respect, it was a good result and a good day for Brighton.
09:22The performance was a little bit patchy.
09:23They just don't seem to be quite at their best at the moment.
09:26They're not controlling the games as they do when they're at their best.
09:31The second half in particular was like, oh, we'll have the ball, we'll give it away.
09:35Wolves will have the ball, they'll give it away.
09:37And it was just, the ball just kept on being turned over and it was all a little bit scrappy and a bit messy.
09:43But in the key moments, Brighton did very well.
09:47And credit to Bart Verbruggen as well, because he made a couple of really good saves,
09:51particularly in the second half, to keep the score, to keep Brighton in the lead,
09:57which allowed them then to go on and get the winner through Brian Gruda.
10:02So it was a good performance.
10:04And Danny Welbeck, again, he played quite well up front in Giao Pedro's absence.
10:09He served the last of his three-match suspension against Wolves.
10:14And Welbeck, you know, he did the business again.
10:17It was his tenth goal of the Premier League campaign for Brighton.
10:21And the first time he's ever reached double figures, which is quite a surprising statistic,
10:26considering how long he's been in the game.
10:27And he's played for the likes of Man United and Arsenal as well.
10:31So, yeah, fair play to him.
10:33All credit to Danny Welbeck.
10:35And a special mention to Adam Webster as well.
10:37Lewis Dunk was a late absentee due to injury.
10:40Webster played his first match in about six or seven games,
10:44slotted in really well at centre-back.
10:46He played with a composure and a control,
10:50which Brighton had been lacking, you know, a lot this season.
10:54And a lot of credit goes to him for Brighton keeping a clean sheet.
10:58And it's now a big decision to make because Dunk is probably going to be fit
11:02to face Liverpool and Tottenham.
11:06But there's a big argument now for Webster to keep his spot after that one.
11:12Absolutely.
11:12As you mentioned there, Darren, Welbeck has hit double figures for the first time
11:17in a single Premier League season.
11:19And he is now one goal away from matching his most productive season
11:21across all competitions, where he scored 12 times for Man United in 2011-2012.
11:26Great moment for him, Sam.
11:27How big of a part has Welbeck played in Albion's upward trajectory since he arrived?
11:32He's been dogged without injury throughout his career, isn't he?
11:35It's good to see that he's kind of avoided that.
11:37Yeah, 100%.
11:38And Herzler made that point, actually, when he was asked about Welbeck.
11:41He just wanted to personally thank the medical team that managed to keep him fit
11:46for so long.
11:47And he's played more games in the season than ever before.
11:50And he described him as a special character, a role model for the young players
11:54on the pitch and beside the pitch.
11:56And he's just really happy for him to have reached this record.
11:58And it's not the first time that I've been asked to talk about Welbeck
12:01in the podcast.
12:02I think it just goes to show how often Welbeck is making himself a talking point.
12:06And it's great to see him reach double figures for Premier League goals.
12:10Obviously, he's been scoring goals for 17 years, and he's now up to 77 in the Premier League.
12:16So, fingers crossed, he can get to 100.
12:18But I don't see why not, really, in the kind of the trajectory and form that he's on this season.
12:25He seems to be getting better with age.
12:27So, yeah, it's fantastic to see.
12:29And Welbeck, when he was asked about it, he said it's a good milestone to have.
12:33He feels like it could have been more.
12:35Because he scored his Premier League debut for many nights as a 17-year-old in November 2008.
12:41So, he probably feels in that time he could have scored even more goals.
12:44And, yeah, I think he's looking forward to improving even further.
12:47And he's looking forward to getting more goals even this season in the final two games.
12:52Just rearing off those stats there and those dates, Sam, just makes me feel incredibly old.
12:55Where does the time go?
12:57Mad.
12:58Another two who started in the win at Wolves was midfield pair Mats Vifa and Brian Gruder.
13:02Both have struggled since their £25 million moves from final and mince, respectively.
13:07But Vifa now has three assists in his past four appearances.
13:10While Gruder's goal at Mourinhoe follows his two assists in the win over West Ham.
13:14Darren, how impressed have you been with those two in the past recent weeks?
13:17And have they suggested that they could potentially become key players next season for Albion?
13:22Yeah, it's been good to see.
13:24And I said in the piece afterwards, I did a piece on the video.
13:29And I think it's the best game that Vifa's had in the Brighton shirt since he joined from final.
13:36He's had so many injuries since he's arrived.
13:38Not major injuries, but real sort of niggling injuries which have prevented him from finding a rhythm
13:44and getting on a consistent run since his arrival.
13:49But I think in the last few games he's been playing at right back.
13:52He's obviously naturally a midfielder, but they've, due to the injuries, he's slotted in at right back.
13:58And he's doing okay.
14:00There's some games he admitted he's struggled, particularly when he's been caught out of position.
14:06He said he's adapting to the new role at right back.
14:09And he's very honest in his assessments of his own performances.
14:14And he's getting better.
14:16He's getting better in the right back position.
14:18And I think against Wolves he defended well, but also importantly he was a threat going forward as well.
14:25He won the penalty which Welbeck converted because he was pressing so high up the pitch.
14:32And then he forced the error and then was brought down in the box.
14:36So, yeah, credit to Wifa for that.
14:38And I think you're right.
14:40He is going to be a key player for Brighton next season.
14:44And I think you'll probably see him playing more in the midfield role next season as long as he can stay fit.
14:51And as for Gruda, yeah, it was a really good goal as well.
14:57So, a nice way to get off for the mark.
15:00He's had troubles again.
15:01He's had injuries as well.
15:03Still very young.
15:05But it was a good goal.
15:06It was the two substitutes that made the difference.
15:08Adinga came on, ran at the heart of the defence and just slipped in Gruda.
15:13And he was so composed just to dink the ball over Jose Sarr, who was closing him down.
15:19And then he just collapsed on the floor.
15:21It was such a contrast between the composure he showed for the finish and then the outpouring of emotion afterwards that he saw.
15:30And it just shows what it means to him to get his first goal for Brighton after a tricky first season in the Premier League.
15:37And again, Herzella spoke about his resilience that he's shown to find his best form despite a lot of challenges this season.
15:47So, interesting to see what happens to him next year.
15:51There is some fans think he should maybe have a loan elsewhere to, you know, to get up to speed like Nciso has or like Guanonate has.
16:00But my hunch is that he'll be in and around the first team again next season and become more of an influence on the first team.
16:09He's a class act.
16:11Well, that result leaves ninth place Brighton hopeful of a second European campaign with two league games of the season remaining, as well as much depending on results elsewhere.
16:19Sam, what are the permutations for European qualification?
16:22And with Crystal Palace winning the FA Cup, potentially you see a team miss out on Europe.
16:26How does that work?
16:28Yeah, so it's a little bit complicated.
16:30So, the Conference League spot is currently held by Newcastle for winning the League Cup.
16:35But if Eddie Howe's team finish the top six, which seems very likely, the Conference League spot would go to the highest placed team that hasn't yet reached Europe,
16:42which could be as low as eighth if Manchester City win the FA Cup.
16:46But of course, if Palace were to cause an upset there, that rules that possibility out.
16:50So, another reason why Brighton wouldn't want Palace to win the FA Cup if there wasn't a big enough reason already.
16:57And if Chelsea finish outside the top six and win the Conference League, there will be three Europa League places, but no Conference League spot.
17:04So, yeah, a bit complicated.
17:06I think Brighton just had to make sure they do the business on the pitch in the final two games and finish as high as they can and see where that takes them.
17:14Absolutely.
17:15It makes for a thrilling end to the season.
17:16And finally, Brighton host recently crowned Champions Liverpool Monday night.
17:20In their final home game of the season, the Reds haven't been at their best since winning the title, losing to Chelsea and then letting a two goalie slip in last weekend's home draw with Arsenal.
17:28How do you see this one going, Darren?
17:30And what's the latest injury news from the Albion camp as things stand?
17:35Yeah, you're right.
17:36Liverpool seem to have, as you'd probably expect, taken their foot off the gas a bit.
17:40And again, when you play these teams, it's often about the right time, you know, picking them at the right time and getting these teams hopefully win there in a downward dipper form.
17:49And I think that could be the case for Liverpool.
17:52And hopefully Brighton will be, you know, really fired up for this one to their last home game of the season.
17:58So they're going to want to finish strongly at the Amex Stadium.
18:02And I think a real boost for them is having Jao Pedro back.
18:06It was a bit of a needless red card that he picked up at Brentford and he's missed the last three matches.
18:12And I thought they've done pretty well without him.
18:15But against Newcastle, against the top teams, they really missed his presence against Newcastle, I thought, in the second half.
18:24And I think having him back and available for selection will be a big boost for Brighton.
18:29And just take a little bit of pressure off Danny Welbeck, who's played a lot of minutes in Pedro's absence.
18:34So I think that's a major plus for Brighton.
18:37Jorginho could also be an option as well.
18:39He's been struggling with an ankle injury since the FA Cup exit to Nottingham Forest.
18:44He hasn't played since then.
18:46And he's building up his recovery as well from there.
18:51And we'll get more of an idea.
18:52I think the press conference before the match will be on Friday afternoon.
18:56So we'll get more of a better indication of the team news then where the likes of Joel Veltman were hoped to be available.
19:02And also Lewis Dunk will be assessed as we touched on earlier.
19:06He picked up a small injury ahead of Wolves.
19:08So a few decisions to make, but some promising signs on the injury front for the last two matches of the season.
19:15And Brighton will be keen to finish with a good victory at the Amex in their final home game of the season against the champions.
19:23Thank you for watching latest TV news.
