01:31oh my goodness welcome to the wilson security sand down 500 where this year the stakes have never
01:39been higher the v8 supercars only on seven
01:43for more than 40 years sand down international motor raceway has had a very special place
01:56in australian motorsport it is the traditional home of the 500 the lead up to the big one at bathurst
02:02and we're set for a thrilling weekend 28 cars 56 drivers four manufacturers 161 laps tomorrow
02:10as we welcome you to the wilson security sand down 500 the first of three events to make up the
02:15pertech enduro cup so who will reign this weekend who will be best placed to conquer the mountain in a
02:21few weeks who will wrap up the inaugural pertech enduro cup on the streets of surface paradise so much to
02:28look forward to and it all begins with qualifying which is a unique format a three-step process we
02:34have a 20-minute qualifying session to get underway shortly then to sprint for the grids the co-drivers
02:41go first how they finish determines how the regular series drivers jump in and then how they finish is
02:47the starting order for the sand down 500 tomorrow alongside me in commentary as always mark scaife and
02:53neil crompton as we take a look at this circuit the 10th event on the 2013 calendar it will make up
03:00race 28 of the series tomorrow and sand down is 3.1 kilometers and this is a wild ride around here
03:06with a top speed of about 265 kilometers an hour on both straights a lot of variety in the track surface
03:12here quite a lot of bumps it's a very difficult track to master it's got a great average speed of
03:16about 160 kilometers an hour and around about half of the lap is 100 flat out throttle the three sectors
03:23that we'll make reference to in qualifying the first one ends exiting the back straight at turn
03:27four and really sector two is all about the drag strip run that takes you to the fast left-hander at
03:32the end of the back straight turn six cars rolling out now all 28 of them in preparation for qualifying
03:38this is going to be a great session we've got some wonderful story lines to follow across the course
03:45of the weekend of course the big feature is the new 28 drivers that come and join us not only for
03:51this event but for bathurst and surfers paradise so that's a first normally it's just for the two big
03:57enduros and then we have gotten used to welcoming international drivers for the armor or gold coast
04:02600 but this is a real chance for these combinations to bed down over three massive events and it all
04:09starts here can craig lounge collect his ninth 500 victory he's won five out of his eight at this
04:17circuit and that would put him equal if he can get to number nine with the great peter brock it's just
04:22laced with history this place you go up and down the winner's board you see the great names brock
04:28goss moffatt johnson they're all there as i mentioned more than 40 years worth of history a little bit of
04:37resurfacing to this circuit since we were last here so it is made for some super fast times and a new
04:46record for a v8 supercar set in the previous session the fourth and final practice session earlier today
04:52belongs to jamie wing cup now 108.666 that's fast it certainly is man and the previous record was a
05:009-3 with will davison here last year so to do an 8-6 as you said not only is it some resurfacing and
05:09some higher grip levels but the new generation cars for the first time at sand down and one of the things
05:15also about this we've said it all year that everybody's been a pioneer with these new cars
05:19on these new surfaces to understand what makes them work ride the curbs ride the bumps
05:25negotiate this patchwork quilt that is such a different style of circuit compared to anywhere
05:31else and remember nobody tests here so everybody's there's wing cup sideways again he went off before
05:37in that exact same spot at turn two you see wing cup there absolutely out of control right out
05:43sideways and again coming onto the back straight that would have hurt his corner exit speed there he
05:48actually ended up on the crown of the curve wheel spinning a lot in second gear and that surface
05:54variation is trapping drivers right at the point of exit because it returns to the old surface
05:58here's his teammate craig lowndes reigning champion together with warren luff 2012 going back on board here
06:07at turn nine with win cup reigning bathurst champion paired up again with paul dumbrell
06:12unusual set of numbers out of red bull racing australia if you go back 12 months ago where
06:17win cup finished third or win cup and dumbrell finished third in this race and first at bathurst
06:22and lowndes and luff finished first in this race and third at bathurst
06:27jamie wasn't that thrilled about his run here last year because if you recall there was that
06:32vigorous exchange between he and mark winterbottom caused a bit of friction between the teams where
06:37frosty did the dive bomb move down the inside of turn nine so they were playing for a spot on the podium
06:43is chas most at car number 12 supercar winner one of many 12 of them in total for 2013 made his mark
06:52beginning in the perth round of the championship and has really electrified the campaign for dick johnson
06:57racing this year he took over the seat that johnny reed had so remember the main game drivers will be
07:02in the seat for this qualifying session you can use whatever drivers you want but obviously they'll go
07:07with the main guys then two sprint for the grids the co-drivers go first all 28 of them out there
07:14together and then the regular series drivers chas most it has dale wood in his corner this weekend
07:20and here's the sister car of tim blanchard and ash walsh
07:24this is a 20 minute session we've already burnt near enough to four of those minutes
07:33so it's going to be about the usual deal in qualifying and getting yourself some elbow room
07:39finding a little bit of space and getting the job done we go on board now with david reynolds
07:42sitting up on top of the concrete on the exit of the final corner turn 13 he's in the draft
07:48i just love it crompo how everything changes meanwhile wind cups on 108.9 there's dean canto
07:55remember back at bathurst mount panorama 2012 a remarkable day in the history of our sport and
08:04in the lives of those two drivers dean canto and david reynolds the closest finish at the mountain
08:09they were literally a whisker away from being bathurst champions and they're back together again
08:14bright's gone position two in hospital last weekend with tonsillitis i had a quick word to him in the
08:19brad jones racing garage before says he's feeling okay now but he was in dire straits just seven days
08:25ago so the first real indicative lap is wink up with an 8.9 remember an 8.66 in the previous session
08:32fastest lap time ever that's the really first indication in this session of someone doing a
08:38good job you'll probably have to do a similar time except that it's a little bit warmer
08:42and more sunlight than the previous session and a tiny bit more of a southerly now than it was in
08:48practice four so a bit more of a headwind on the run to turn one a lot has been made about red bull
08:53racing australia in particular over the last few events winton was an absolute disaster yesterday
08:59jamie wink up with his brand new car he's got a brand new car number one for this weekend wasn't
09:06happy at all he was on the 18th fastest with paul d'umbrel and within the space of 12 hours they've
09:13managed to turn that around so let's continue to ride here with chas moston as crompo mentioned
09:19one of 12 different winners in season 2013
09:22fascinating statistic for me is that 14 of the 28 drivers that regularly contest the series have
09:29actually been on the podium so i think anytime you get 50 of your field to take home a bit of
09:33glassware or tin cup is good because the good news on teams it gives them a drink gives them an
09:38opportunity it's like when you connect nicely when you're playing tennis or golf and that one good
09:42shot keeps you going so when everybody gets a little bit of sugar it really helps the cause
09:47bit of glassware or tin cup does make a difference lunatic well johnny winkup is about to deliver a second
09:54ace well in fact he's bailed out of that one so two green boxes david reynolds has the same
10:01most it up to second matt that was a very good job we were on board there before we saw that there
10:06was a nine dead and prema with a nine zero six into third position there's rod nash alongside dean
10:14canto so that's the bottle ford entries brains trust and driver lineup for the pertech enduro cup
10:22which is now officially underway here at the wilson security sand down 500
10:26you're watching the wilson security sand down 500 qualifying here light splashing for craig lowndes
10:39and with good reason he's gone second on the list behind his teammate jamie winkup so this is the
10:46first of a three-part qualifying format with two sprint for the grid qualifying racers to come
10:54after this lee holdsworth with the owen tools erebus mercedes amg is showing good pace as well he's up in
11:01the third with a green box next to his name and if they can continue the pace that we've had throughout
11:08the practice sessions we're going to have to factor in these guys in our form guide because lee is paired
11:14with craig baird a wealth of experience he got a he got a toe then also so up that back straight he got
11:19a very very good toe in the slipstream of david wall that was very smart it would be one or two tenths of a
11:28second in that straight away let's just see what this has done for holdsworth he's already
11:31in third position with an eight nine seven what's it done no not quite good enough so the tire quality
11:37not quite good enough team owner betty clemenco always a colorful presence check this out car 36 and
11:47michael caruso wow wickedly fast that's a big catch he had a huge amount of steering lock on them to catch
11:53that and fortunately it bit here's the other angle it's all crossed up and he popped out the other
11:58side and turn nine was where it was meant to be a lot of debris on the road as a result here it is
12:04again in replay from the rear that's a lot of attitude on that car it's virtually on the lock
12:07stops in terms of steering angle and he's gathered it up and popped out the other side wow so it's that
12:14there it meant that it followed the front wheels he was out sideways to the left and then he had that
12:21correction on he couldn't get the correction off fast enough and it flicked the other way
12:24let's have another look so he's right out sideways at 190 kilometers an hour then it follows the right
12:30hand front wheel and it arrows towards the fence he would have thought when that happened there right
12:35there that he was going straight in the guard rail that is a massive moment and his co-driver
12:40daniel baunt would have held his breath as the norton hornet went flying through the grass so jamie
12:46wing cup leads the way here it's a red bull racing australia one two crazy stuff to start qualifying
12:52day here at sand down
12:53time is ticking away here in this first qualifying session for the wilson security sand down 500
13:07will davison ford performance racing the pepsi max crew leads the way with a 108.886
13:13but david reynolds is closing in on and he goes to second
13:17108.89
13:19so the pace is coming as always at the back end of this 20 minute session under five minutes to go
13:26here comes mark winterbottom
13:27great way for david reynolds to be celebrating inking that new deal with rod nash in fourth
13:34performance racing he's definitely got great endurance form and confidence so it's davison in a
13:39forward reynolds in a forward and will's come into the pit lane from wing cup in a hold and
13:43mostard in a falcon there's a great mix lee holdsworth is in the 10 in the erebus mercedes in car number
13:49four he's eighth at the moment and the extraordinary thing is and we talked about this earlier in
13:53practice four on v8 superview and it's got bigger it's 0.3 of a second covering the top 17 cars
14:01yeah and if we look at jamie wink up on screen now one of the clever little tuning devices that
14:05they've just done on this car they've got the race tape and they've blanked off his front brake
14:09ducts they're the inlets at the very front of that car down low you can see and what that does
14:14it's very hard to get front tire temperature here at sand down so to trade off for that they need
14:19some more downforce some more front aero and the brakes won't get hot in qualifying so they've
14:24blanked them off let's see how it works right now
14:26well there's some pace to burn out there these green boxes are lining up like a christmas tree
14:31on the timing sheet at the moment will davison's time continues to stand because win cup couldn't
14:36better at that time around there'll be some very nervous co-drivers watching on because remember
14:41how they finish this qualifying session is how they hand over the cars to the first sprint for the grid
14:46for the co-drivers statie said earlier in the call he thought that he heard a rev limiter at the end of
14:51the front straight when we're on board with win cup then i saw all the lights illuminated on the
14:56steering wheel which means it is out of breath in top gear so that's extraordinary i i we've never
15:02seen a time before where with this gearing oh and on the rev limiter again at the end of the back
15:06straight for david reynolds so they're making great pace in a straight line there's very little wind out
15:11there in fact if anything even by comparison to my earlier comment about the southerly the flags outside
15:17the commentary box at the moment are flat there's nothing going on and as always it's this part of the
15:21circuit that has been hardest for most of the drivers in the last five minutes boys
15:25to master so two green boxes ultimate pace down the back straight for davy reynolds down along down
15:32to dong road across the finish line reynolds stays in second i've never seen it before there's one
15:37tenth of a second in the nine cars one tenth of a second it's crazy well larko played stopwatch
15:46grand prix at winton i recall and it sort of showed us that it's just basically a tiny click
15:50and it's not done yet we've still got a little over two minutes remaining here
15:55lounge stays in fifth holdsworth crosses the line in eighth mclaughlin in seventh
16:00still a couple of minutes to go again two green boxes in the first sector for garth tander but not
16:07in the third traffic's playing a part as well tander's got the lights on him and nick perkatt back
16:13together again win cup that's the best first sector of actually ever 25.99 now the interesting
16:21thing also is that courtney is down in 18th at the moment 0.38 away so the pace they showed in
16:27practice isn't evident right at the moment when they need to have it in qualifying in fact it's
16:30tander who's 12th as we go back to david reynolds two green boxes one corner remaining for him didn't
16:36look tidy at the final corner he's running into the second last corner too fast he ran wide he
16:41couldn't get it at it so he's lost time every lap on the last sector wink up now there's bright
16:47this might have cost him a little bit wink up there's another 42-2 to the second sector let's have a look
16:52look at what it does yes goes to the top of that 862 that's the fastest time ever at this racetrack
16:58and he did it with the track over a minute remaining watching the cars on flies behind
17:04did it with the team boc car to the right with jason bright there so any and he had a lot of second
17:08gear wheels spin off turn 13 brett right down pit lane you can hear the cheer from team red bull
17:13right at that moment but mark winterbottom has just come in he's picked up two green rear tires
17:18and he's back out and chas mostard has just gone to position two the margin is just 0.09 of a second
17:24and tander's jumped up to three courtney's now sixth so scratch those remarks from earlier
17:30about the holden racing team cars not being in there they are when i said there was one tenth of a
17:35second for the top 10 cars when wink up did that lap it was 0.26 faster than the next car

17:48lounge bright mclaughlin that's your 10. riding with will davison and remember as brett's just
17:54updated us mark winterbottom has gone back out there with some green tires so he will need to
18:00make sure that he gets a full crack at a lap here and a reminder that this sets the starting order
18:06for the co-driver sprint for the grid coming up this afternoon in our telecast so paul d'umbrell's
18:11feeling pretty good about himself chas mostard is going to deliver his car beautifully to dale wood
18:16but it's not done with yet there are still those to complete laps
18:20lounge just jumped so lounge has moved up to fifth glachlan p3 tander now p4
18:26what a session so the question is about mark winterbottom did he get enough time to take a
18:33full flying lap it doesn't look like it he's backed it off so he was just outside the top 10 which is
18:40where he remains in 12th there's a lot of garbage coming out of van gisbergen's car there and he's
18:46down the order in 16th remember had a scrappy practice for earlier here's the man of the moment
18:51yesterday afternoon jamie winkup jumped out of car number one and he was not a happy camper but
18:57today it's a different story he's found so much more pace what about the effort from chas mostard
19:02delivering the car to his co-driver in second as we take a look along 11th through to 20th which is
19:09where we find james moffat and then down the back end of the grid jonathan webb heading that list tim
19:15lanchard in 24th and rick kelly in the nissan ultimate last another fantastic day for young chas
19:23that was his dad eddie who's always in his corner he's already a race winner in this series
19:28and right now he is on the charge here at the wilson security sand down 500
19:34there is pace to burn here this weekend the jamie winkup with a brand new commodore
19:48has lowered the lap time for a v8 supercar at sand down 108.620 is the fastest lap ever around here
19:56he will hand over this car to paul dumbrell to lead it out for the first sprint for the grid
20:01and we want to try and just jump in here sorry to interrupt boys having a deep breath i hate doing
20:07this mate now with all this money around here jamie there was the trick tuning device mode i saw the
20:12guys tape up your front brake ducts i thought good move on cold front tires around here wasn't exactly
20:17there's a little bit more technology going on but um yeah no the car was better we've improved the car
20:23as the day's gone on um and got a little bit of a tow which is now everyone it's always handy around
20:28here so um combine the the tow with a good car we're um we're happy unfortunately it's not a
20:33stat i wish it was a pole position stat but it's sort of um it's just like another practice session
20:37but it gives paul a good opportunity in this first race it was a great time well done mate yeah thank
20:41you cheers hey chas mostard you haven't done a lot of time here in the last couple of years but boy
20:45you've made up for lost ground that was impressive yeah no we had a bit of an up and down day yesterday
20:50in practice and um yeah i kind of think we just uh went into the qualifying with a bit of a wing
20:54it set up and um yeah you know my engineer gave me a great car and now i guess all the pressure's
20:58on dale good work you've handed him over a good car yeah i think so i think the the best the car's
21:03been is all weekend was in that qualifying session obviously being at the front as well always um
21:07also helps that to confirm it but yeah no um you know it's a little bit uh tail at the moment so
21:12might do find a couple of you know little adjustments here and there but it's all up to him
