During remarks on the Senate floor Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about proposed cuts to SNAP.

00:04So the Republicans' so-called Big Beautiful Bill

00:07is one of the most heinous, callous, and cruel proposals we've ever seen.

00:12Republicans don't want to axe health care for 14 million Americans,

00:16which is going to mean higher costs for even many more millions of Americans.

00:22They also want massive cuts to SNAP,

00:25the largest, most effective anti-hunger program in America.

00:29Republicans want to cut SNAP benefits by as much as $310 billion,

00:35the largest cuts to anti-hunger funding in history.

00:40This would mean the average person on SNAP would be left with just $5 a day for food.

00:48That is morally bankrupt.

00:50$5 a day for food.

00:53One dozen eggs alone cost more than that.

00:56Republicans are literally stealing food away from hungry kids,

01:02from seniors, from veterans,

01:04to finance tax breaks for the ultra-rich.

01:10This is cruel.

01:11This is mean, heartless, and counterproductive.

01:15You have a hungry child, can't learn.

01:18Often grows up to have a life that is not as productive as others who are fed can have.

01:27The Republican cuts to SNAP would cut 6 million Americans off from food.

01:33It would reduce food benefits for 5 million more Americans.

01:374 million children, 4 million children will go to bed hungry because of this cruelty

01:44to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

01:49I'd even like to ask these billionaires who are so hell-bent on reducing their own taxes

01:54if they're happy taking money away from hungry children and not feeding them.
