00:00Am I ever going to love again?
00:12Am I ever going to love again?
00:18Couples in love make promises, in sickness and in health, to have and to hold.
00:23But when the past catches up to you, a couple can find the real meaning of the phrase, love you to death.
00:28Am I ever going to love, going to love, going to love again?
00:33Am I ever going to love, going to love, going to love again?
00:41When she was found, they were planning a wedding.
00:44And that wedding was less than 48 hours away.
00:48Never would have thought that I would have been going to her funeral that next week instead of her wedding.
00:52Never would have thought it.
00:55She's come in the door and she said, I'm here to get a marriage license.
00:59A lot of things happened after that.
01:04I don't want to cry.
01:05Hours away from becoming a bride, Molly Watson's story takes a tragic turn when a stranger makes a discovery on a country road.
01:16April 27th of 2018, it was a Friday night.
01:25Glenn McSperrin is taking a shortcut from his mother's home there in Monroe County.
01:38Didn't really think nothing of it, just a typical night.
01:40It's remote.
01:41It's really grown up.
01:42You're driving in between trees and horseweeds down to the creek.
01:47You got to turn as you go down into it and go across it because the road kind of curves.
01:58That night, he says, he saw headlights.
02:01He saw a car come up and kind of cut him off, put their headlights right into his view.
02:07Once I got a little bit closer, I could see that there was a car and I thought that they wanted past me.
02:13So I pulled over to the side of the road and I could see another car parked over on the right facing away from me.
02:20He said he saw a short white guy driving the car.
02:24Glenn McSperrin described the car with the older white man as an old grandma car.
02:31I couldn't hardly see him because of all the glare.
02:35And I just kind of turned my head towards the window and I said, hey, is somebody stuck down there?
02:40And how did he say that?
02:42He said, I don't know where they're at. It's going to be a while.
02:46Glenn McSperrin had a brief verbal exchange with this older white male.
02:51And the other individual indicated that Glenn needed to go around a different way.
02:56So I just backed my truck up a little bit and went back to the west.
03:01The more I thought about it, I was like, that's just, it doesn't, something's not right.
03:05I talked to my mom, my brother for a minute and I told him, I said, I'm going to go back through there.
03:09On his way back, just 30 minutes later, a horrific scene, a body in his headlights.
03:19I stayed in my truck and I called 911.
03:22I don't know what the hell's going on here.
03:24They wanted me to just make sure if she was alive or not.
03:28Ma'am. Ma'am. Oh my God. I don't think she's alive, no.
03:36I seen if she was cold to the touch or if she had a pulse and she did not.
03:41And I looked in her eyes and I could tell that, that she was gone.
03:45Her eyes are open. She, I swear to God, she's dead.
03:47She was essentially shot execution style.
03:54She had been shot once in the back of the head at point blank range.
04:02The idea that it never happens here in this country corner of Missouri is pretty much right.
04:10Police go into full investigative mode and there's evidence to be found.
04:15In the muddy crime scene, they find tire tracks remarkably well preserved.
04:21And there appeared to be markings that looked like two O's.
04:26I think everybody looking thought that it was probably a Goodyear tire.
04:30I came upon this shirt laying in the road, went around the shirt and passed it.
04:36And then I stopped and I'm thinking, we're kind of close to the crime scene here.
04:42I probably better pick that up just in case.
04:46That t-shirt, we later learned had gunshot residue on it, had Molly Watson's blood.
04:53On a road leading away from the scene, they find an empty box.
04:59It was an empty .22 caliber ammunition box.
05:01The .22 would be considered a small caliber firearm, along with several other calibers.
05:08An autopsy later recovers a bullet.
05:11It revealed that it was a small caliber weapon that was used to kill her.
05:15The bullet that they found was too damaged to be able to match it up with any particular firearm.
05:22All we can say about the projectile is that it would be consistent with a small caliber ammunition.
05:27We initially run the vehicle registration, things of that nature.
05:36We were eventually able to figure out that the victim was Molly Watson.
05:41Police wake up the family in the middle of the night with some pretty bad news.
05:48My wife woke me up, said, your dad's on the phone.
05:53He doesn't sound good. Something happened.
05:57I'll never forget my dad.
05:59He said, Timmy, he said the highway patrol just left our house.
06:02I was like, what happened?
06:05He said they found Molly dead in the road.
06:09I was like, what?
06:12Do you know how old she is now?
06:13Police want to know what brought Molly to this dark, desolate place.
06:17And even more puzzling, who'd have a reason to kill her?
06:21Molly Watson's body was found
06:23Wearing her engagement ring
06:25On her left ring finger
06:27They were planning a wedding
06:28Wedding of her dreams
06:29That wedding was less than 48 hours away
06:31We always heard about the wedding.
06:47We were very excited about the wedding.
06:50You know, the colors, the theme, the decorations.
06:53Molly has a wedding planner who's working on the details.
07:03There's a lot of burgundy and gold.
07:05Kind of reminded me of like a Renaissance kind of theme.
07:09Two dresses she could not make up her mind.
07:12This dress, as you will see with it on me, I show it with me wearing one ball gown crinoline.
07:21Molly Watson is 35.
07:23Her friends describe her as sweet, creative, bubbly.
07:27Me and Molly were both kind of goofballs, but she was like my best friend.
07:31Lots of artwork, costuming, and she was really good at that.
07:37She has a YouTube channel.
07:39She plays with makeup and shows off her sewing.
07:42She wanted to start like a weekly vlog where she would, you know, just talk about herself or what's going on in her life.
07:50I work in education right now.
07:52I have two degrees in psychology, a bachelor's and a master's.
07:57She wanted to be a singer for a long time and she had a really good singing voice.
08:01I am going to sing the healing incantation from Tangled.
08:07Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine.
08:15Molly was married in her early twenties.
08:18The relationship didn't last more than a few years.
08:21During the breakup, she's pregnant and has a son.
08:24Declan was her world.
08:26She would take him to the zoo.
08:27You know, she would take him about anywhere with her.
08:30That was just her world right there.
08:33Later, she dates a woman she'd known since they were in kindergarten together.
08:39But that relationship falls apart when Molly meets somebody new at the prison where she works as a corrections officer.
08:46A lieutenant named James Addy.
08:49He's 16 years older than she is.
08:51And Molly's brother says the couple doesn't spend much time with her family.
08:55There was definitely an age gap there.
08:58At first, you know, it was weird for us.
09:01But, you know, everybody kind of got past it.
09:03I asked her, you know, what does your family think about him?
09:07And she was really kind of hesitant.
09:09And she said, you know, my family doesn't really like him.
09:12They've only met him a few times.
09:14But Addy's brother looked up to him.
09:16Growing up, Jim, he was a role model and example.
09:19He was in the Marine Corps.
09:21And then from the Marine Corps, he got out after Desert Storm and just created a life.
09:28Molly told her brother that James mentioned he'd been married a few times.
09:33One marriage to a woman named Melanie resulted in two children, Ben and Emma.
09:38I loved Melanie.
09:40She was always nice, always kind, funny.
09:43It was just Melanie.
09:44The type of women that Jim liked were very, very nice, very kind.
09:50At this point, James and Molly seem to be a couple.
09:53And he's quite the romantic.
09:55He writes, you're truly the love of my life now and forever.
09:59You are my everything.
10:01I adore you.
10:02After seven years of having this relationship with James,
10:07Well, she surprises her family.
10:10She suddenly announces, I'm engaged.
10:15You were booked for her makeup and hair three years ago.
10:19Yes.
10:20What did you know about Molly and the wedding and her fiance?
10:23I remember meeting her.
10:25She was so excited.
10:27She wanted a Disney theme.
10:29A very wonderful wedding had been planned at the Stony Creek Inn.
10:34Molly had invited her family here to come to this event.
10:38It was bubbly.
10:39She was happy.
10:40She enjoyed talking about her wedding.
10:42James was kind of the opposite of Molly.
10:44He was very quiet.
10:46Didn't show much enthusiasm.
10:48I just thought he was just a groom along for the ride.
10:54And then, according to Molly's brother, in the middle of planning the wedding,
10:58James gives Molly some terrible news about Melanie, the mother of his children.
11:03James had told Molly, who told me that Melanie was involved in December in a really bad car wreck,
11:11and that she was on life support.
11:13And they didn't think she was going to make it.
11:16When I was reaching out to Molly to try to get a meeting scheduled, she had mentioned that James' ex-wife had passed away from a car accident over the holidays.
11:30So he had to go do a funeral stuff with his kids when we were trying to meet.
11:36There are some last-minute changes.
11:38James and Molly cut their guest list in half.
11:41And it turns out his daughter, Emma, won't need the hair and makeup team.
11:45The plan was that she had a stepdaughter who she was planning to do hair and makeup on.
11:53I did also want to let you know that it is just going to be me getting hair and makeup done.
11:59My soon-to-be-stepdaughter has decided she and a friend are going to do each other's hair and makeup.
12:06And so we're just going to go that route.
12:10Molly worries that her fiancé may be getting cold feet.
12:14Are you changing your mind?
12:16Not at all.
12:17Then what?
12:18It worries me that you were changing yours.
12:20I wasn't.
12:21Good.
12:22Two days to go till the wedding.
12:27The couple are meeting at the county recorder's office to get their marriage license.
12:32He remembers Molly well.
12:34The cameras I got in the back of my office for security filmed all that.
12:41Molly Watson come in the door just shortly before 4 o'clock and she said,
12:45I'm here to get a marriage license.
12:47And she was quite pleasant to talk to.
12:50We had a good time.
12:51You can see James there in his uniform, running late, hurrying inside.
12:58And then Mr. Addy walked in the door and he was not smiling.
13:03He was acting like this was not the place he wanted to be in.
13:08She reached right over to him and was touching his arm and stuff.
13:13And she would pat him on the back and she would lean into him a little bit.
13:17He watches as they leave the office hand in hand.
13:22That's just tough.
13:23It really is.
13:24Because she was a sweet girl.
13:26A lot of things happened after that.
13:29I don't want to cry.
13:44Just hours later, that marriage certificate is found at the crime scene.
13:50Her marriage certificate was located in her car.
13:53That had her name in there as well as her fiance's name.
13:57Now, in the middle of the night, there's something they've got to do right away.
14:02They head to her fiance's house.
14:04So they went to his house that evening.
14:08While the trooper is there in the home, he makes a startling discovery.
14:13There's another woman in James Addy's house.
14:16She asked the trooper, what are you doing here?
14:19And I imagine the trooper probably felt much of the same thing.
14:24What are you doing here?
14:26It turns out the woman who was there is James Addy's wife, Melanie Addy.
14:32She's his wife?
14:34The guy's living a complete double life.
14:37What is going on here?
14:49When police show up at James Addy's door to tell him that Molly, his fiance, is dead,
14:55his wife is a surprise to see them as they are to see her.
15:03About 2.30, I think, I saw police car lights out my window.
15:08It was very strange to see that.
15:11I didn't know what was happening.
15:16She wasn't ready for everything that was about to come.
15:19She wasn't prepared that he had this whole other life that was happening without her.
15:24He admits that he was cheating on Melanie with Molly and that, yes, they had been engaged to be married.
15:37Mr. Addy became visibly hot and uncomfortable during that interview.
15:43So hot and uncomfortable that he actually walked over to his window, opened it, and put a box fan there to blow the cool air in.
15:52James Addy volunteered that the last time he had spoken with Molly Watson was earlier in that evening and showed the police a screenshot of a 22-minute phone call from her to him.
16:09For police, everything has changed since that very first moment that they walked into the Addy's house.
16:18This man has a wife. He was sweating in the interview. He's got phone and text messages that seem ever so suspicious.
16:27So for police, there's plenty. What do they do? They arrest him. They charge him with first-degree murder.
16:34Now the trick is building a case.
16:40Watching your husband loaded into a police car has to be hard for Melanie when you think about the snapshots of her life before.
16:57Tell me about meeting James Addy.
17:00I was working at a convenience store, and he was a customer. He came in a lot and finally asked me out.
17:06And once you two hit it off, did he pop the question pretty soon?
17:10Very quickly. Maybe six months.
17:12That's the wedding.
17:14That's the wedding.
17:16You look so young, both of you.
17:19We didn't have a lot of money, and we had Ben on the way very quickly.
17:24When Ben came into the picture, man, I remember going up to their house.
17:28It was always fun. So happy.
17:32A few years later, Emma comes along.
17:34Mm-hmm. So your family's growing.
17:37It was exactly what we wanted.
17:39We had these two great kids. I was a stay-at-home mom.
17:42He went to work. It was a very traditional way to do things.
17:46I thought it was very good.
17:49I love that picture, yeah. All of us together at Christmas time.
17:56As the years go on, their lives seem so normal.
17:59James clashes with his teen son, but Melanie says she felt her husband was dedicated to his family and very loyal.
18:07She never suspected that he was being unfaithful.
18:10Did you get any sense of whether he was contented and happy in the marriage?
18:16He seemed the same all the time.
18:19Melanie did admit that the marriage had its ups and downs, but in her mind, they had always been able to work through whatever the issues were.
18:29This was her reality. Everything was the same. But the fact is, it wasn't. James Addy was in a completely different place.
18:42He was over it. He was done. He didn't love her anymore.
18:47James Addy, for the past seven years, had been living two lives.
18:52How was he able to separate both of these lives?
18:56He's a very good liar.
18:59At one point, he takes a trip to Florida on his own. What was that trip about?
19:05He told me it was a trip related to his work, where they were doing some training.
19:11He took the extra step and printed out what looked like a business letter, made it look official that that's what he was doing.
19:19But he was taking the trip to Florida with Molly.
19:23As I talked to Melanie, knowing where this is going, it's hard not to be a little incredulous.
19:29But no matter what I ask, she's consistent. She did not know the truth about what was going on.
19:36He would get off work at 3 and usually he would get home at 5.
19:43And I would say, well, why are you always so late? And that would be an argument. He didn't want to tell me anything.
19:49Any suspicions?
19:51Not about an affair. No.
19:54So let's go back then to April 27, 2018. Any strange behavior on his part?
20:00No, not at all. Nothing. He just seemed like he always did.
20:05About 7 o'clock, he came in to the living room where I was and said he was going to a friend's house.
20:12Did it strike you as unusual or odd?
20:15I remember being irritated that I wanted him to just be home. And he had a hard time staying home.
20:22Do you remember when he came home?
20:24I was asleep.
20:26And whatever time James Addie got home? Well, Melanie says that she woke up at 2 in the morning to the sound of his snoring.
20:38And she says she did what she normally does, move to the couch in the living room.
20:43The police tell you?
20:45Yes.
20:46That your husband has a dead fiancé?
20:49Yes.
20:50And he's engaged to the wife?
20:51Yeah.
20:52And you're learning all of this in one night?
20:54Immediately, yeah.
20:55And you've been married for 20?
20:5623 years.
20:57What did you think?
20:59I can't even tell you. It was just mind boggling. It made no sense at all. None.
21:05Were you angry? Were you hurt? What were you feeling?
21:10Probably just a disbelief in the beginning. It didn't seem right. This was not my life.
21:15Did you think that your husband was capable of murder?
21:20Yes. It just seemed like something he would do to fix a problem. He was a pretty selfish person.
21:30He could be controlling and intimidating and it could be challenging.
21:37Melanie Addie begins searching her house. She searches a loft type area above the garage which she rarely went into and found a photo album.
21:47She finds several photos of Jim and Molly together, smiling, a happy couple.
21:54She found the photos of them in Florida on this trip that she had thought was a harmless business trip for him to go on,
22:01that he was actually there with his fiancé getting ready to get married.
22:05Were you asking yourself, how could I have missed this?
22:09Oh, absolutely. Every day. Every day. How do you not see this? I guess because I wasn't supposed to see it.
22:16So he's under arrest. He's in jail. Yes.
22:21Did you go visit him? The following week, we were both in tears. Both in tears.
22:28What is he saying to you? That he's sorry. He's very sorry for the affair, but he insists that he was not the killer, that he is not responsible for this.
22:40Was there a part of you that felt for him on any level?
22:45Absolutely. Because I felt like, oh, I have to take care of him. This is what we do. We take care of each other.
22:49Did you look at him suddenly as a stranger, as somebody you didn't know?
22:53I looked at him as someone I didn't want back.
22:57Now investigators have got to untangle this mess. They have to have evidence. They have a t-shirt, the ammunition box, and now there's one other item they find near that dirt road. A cell phone. Molly's cell phone.
23:16That phone now means that prosecutors can take the case to the courtroom. There's another voice that will be heard.
23:23Like they say, a deceased person doesn't speak, but it's almost like Molly was speaking from the grave.
23:37James Addy, the former prison guard, now under guard himself. At trial, lead investigator Bradley Ream takes the stand to testify about that jaw-dropping moment in the Addy home.
23:50I asked her who she was. She replied, I am his wife. I was like, whoa. I was wondering what was going on. And he told me that I got myself involved in something I shouldn't have.
24:04Glenn McSperrin testifies about finding Molly.
24:07Glenn McSperrin testifies about seeing that man at the crime scene, but in a blow to the prosecution, he can't identify James Addy as the man he saw.
24:35I couldn't get a really 100% clear look at him.
24:38But McSperrin's description of the car that man was driving, that old grandma car, police say matches Addy's car. And then they take a good look at the tires.
24:50Prosecutors say one of the tires on Addy's car, a good year, is just the kind that could leave a double O impression like the one found near Molly Watson's body.
25:01It wasn't just that double O print from the side of the Goodyear tire. Officers have something more. What prosecutors call a perfect tire print in the mud, just a few feet from Molly's body.
25:18A state crime lab expert testifies that he compared the right rear tire on Addy's car to a cast that was made at the scene of the crime next to Molly's body.
25:31And what conclusion did you draw, if any, about the tire and the cast?
25:36My conclusion was that particular tire made that particular impression.
25:40Prosecutors are convinced that this tire track matches Addy's car. The defense is saying not so fast.
25:48All right. I'd like to talk to you about this comparison that we just had that state.
25:53There is no widely accepted scientific principle behind an examiner looking at one tire and looking at a cast and saying they look the same to me.
26:07States exhibit 67. Could you explain to the jury what they're looking at here?
26:11That is an empty ammo box of .22 caliber.
26:16A prosecution witness testifies that bullets found in the .22 caliber rifle found in James Addy's home are consistent with the Thunderbolt ammunition, the kind that came in that empty ammo box they found.
26:30Even so, that doesn't prove that it's the murder weapon.
26:34Prosecutors call a long parade of highway patrol investigators and criminalists and then they introduce a key item of evidence.
26:43A cell phone. Molly's cell phone.
26:47Molly Watson's cell phone was a vital link in the chain of evidence for prosecutors.
26:52Information from her cell phone did tell us that she had driven from her home to this location while she was on the phone with James Addy.
27:01Investigators are pouring over all these text messages between James and Molly and what they're hoping to do is reconstruct the events leading up to her killing.
27:11And maybe they'll find even a triggering moment that caused it to happen.
27:16And investigators say there's a reference to that story about Addy's wife Melanie dying after a car crash.
27:23Prosecutors say Addy texted Molly that his ex-wife's funeral was happening the day before their wedding.
27:30The funeral is tomorrow.
27:32I'm sorry, sweetness.
27:33I love you so, so much.
27:35Why would James Addy lie?
27:38Why tell Molly that his ex-wife Melanie was dead?
27:42Some speculate that maybe he hoped the story about the car crash would cause his fiance to postpone the wedding and the collision of his two lives.
27:51But instead, it may have sped up his day of reckoning.
27:55Molly at a certain point did try to look into this and question this according to some of the things brought up in court.
28:02Forensic searches of Molly's phones indicated that the day before she was murdered she was looking for Melanie Addy's obituary.
28:10Was obviously unable to find an obituary for Melanie Addy.
28:14Prosecutors point out that Molly's online search happens the day before her murder and argue this theory.
28:22Molly figures out that James' wife isn't dead and confronts him and they say that's what led him to kill her.
28:30Did James Addy have a plan to see Molly that night?
28:35As stated here in the exhibit, the text message says, I think I'm going to see you tonight.
28:41And that was sent from James' purple phone to Molly.
28:45He knew.
28:46He knew.
28:47He knew what was going to happen.
28:49He knew how that day was going to end.
28:52Earlier in the evening of April 27th, before James Addy departed his home, he had sent text messages from himself to himself.
29:02Have a meeting tonight at 8, normal place.
29:05You have to be there.
29:07James Addy seems to be almost firing himself up to do something drastic.
29:15Don't be a f**k again.
29:17Let's go, man.
29:18It was as if one part of him was telling the other to, come on, we can do this.
29:24Let's go.
29:25Trying to psych himself up for something.
29:27Obviously now we know what it is.
29:29Don't be a f**k, man.
29:30Let's go, man.
29:32He's talking himself into it.
29:34He's getting himself ready.
29:35Molly was lured to this Monroe County road.
29:40A 22-minute phone call and a 22-minute drive to her death.
29:46For the next 30 minutes or so, police say that Addy's phones, both of them are silent.
29:53No calls, no texting.
29:56That is when he killed Molly Watson.
30:02What could have or would have been James Addy's closest allies as a criminal defendant, his wife and his daughter, are now actually going to take the stand against him.
30:13Were you aware that you were on a guest list to attend your dad's wedding?
30:17Will you please state your name and spell it for the court reporter?
30:30Emma Addy, E-M-M-A-A-D-D-I-E.
30:35The evidence at trial showed that Emma Addy had actually met Molly Watson previously.
30:41James' daughter, Emma, needed a costume.
30:45And Dad said that he knew somebody who did that kind of thing.
30:48And that person was Molly and he took me to go meet her and she made a costume for me.
30:55James had introduced Molly as a friend from work.
30:58Did you know about his relationship with Molly?
31:01No.
31:05She articulated to the jury what she saw and heard and remembered from that night.
31:10I was still up doing homework at around 10 p.m.
31:15And that's when, that's around the time that Dad came home.
31:19On cross-examination, the defense really tries to create some doubt with timing.
31:24Maybe he was in the garage working on his car.
31:27Maybe she didn't know.
31:28You'd agree with me that back in this timeframe that your dad would frequently be in the garage, correct?
31:34Yes.
31:36Emma's most damaging testimony may be about that bloody T-shirt.
31:42Remember the one that was found in the road near the crime scene?
31:45The T-shirt becomes so important to this case because it's a one-of-a-kind T-shirt.
31:51And here's the kicker.
31:52It was made by James Addy's daughter, Emma.
31:56Do you recognize that shirt?
31:58Yes.
31:59Right.
32:00How do you recognize that shirt?
32:02She was able to identify it because she made it as a part of one of her classes.
32:07And so she was able to affirmatively say that is the T-shirt that I made.
32:12Okay, I know that's my shirt.
32:14She gave it to her father.
32:16I brought them home that day after the contest.
32:19And dad said that he would take one to the garage just to use his rags.
32:26Addie's defense says that's not proof that maybe Addie had just given the T-shirt to Molly.
32:32Is it so implausible that one fiancé has a shirt that belonged to their fiancé?
32:42As far as your marriage with James Addie, can you describe it for the jury?
32:46Testifying next, the woman James Addie allegedly said was dead, his now ex-wife Melanie Addie.
32:53She filed for divorce soon after his arrest.
32:56It was good sometimes, it was bad sometimes, I thought we both tried to make it work.
33:04You were called to testify.
33:06Mm-hmm.
33:07How hard was that?
33:08It's horrible.
33:09It's just horrible.
33:10You don't want to be there.
33:11I don't want to be in a position where I'm hurting him.
33:13I don't want to do that.
33:15So in April of 2018, were you still married to Mr. Addie and living in that same home?
33:21Yes.
33:22Did you have any plans to divorce at that point?
33:25No.
33:27He'd always been very hard on me about, you know, how a wife should act and how a wife should be.
33:34And then he did this.
33:36He had an affair and that's okay.
33:39No, we were done.
33:41We were done.
33:42James Addie didn't react to his ex-wife taking the stand, but everybody else did.
33:50Anybody watching was riveted.
33:53Prosecutors also ask Melanie about that outrageous story, the one they say James told Molly that Melanie was dead.
34:02Were you in a horrible car crash in October of 2017 around Christmas or New Year's?
34:08No.
34:09And is it fair to say you did not pass away in April of 2018?
34:15That's correct.
34:20After calling nearly 20 witnesses, the state rests its case.
34:24Thank you, sir. You mentioned him down.
34:26And now it's time for the defense to take its turn.
34:28All kinds of options here.
34:30They could introduce evidence.
34:31They could call witnesses.
34:33Or they could put James Addie himself on the stand.
34:37Instead, they do none of the above.
34:40Not putting up a case for the defense is fairly common because the argument is it's the state's burden to prove something beyond a reasonable doubt.
34:51Once my client puts a witness on the stand, now we're in competition for who is more likable, for who do we believe more.
35:02You lose the state's burden and you take on a burden yourself.
35:05The evidence will show that the state does not have proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
35:12Your doubts are reasonable.
35:14Your doubts are reasonable because Jim did not kill Molly.
35:19They attempted to raise enough reasonable doubt about the things that weren't there.
35:24There was no murder weapon.
35:26What would be the motive of a man in love killing his fiancée?
35:31He was in love with Molly, was the defense.
35:34And he was having an affair, but that didn't necessarily mean that he was the killer.
35:40Closing arguments in this case ended up being on what would have been James and Molly's three-year anniversary.
35:47Molly Watson does not get to celebrate her three-year wedding anniversary today.
35:55But you have the power to give her justice.
36:05The jury deliberated about two and a half hours the fate of James Addy and announced they had reached a unanimous decision.
36:13All right then, my understanding the jury has reached a verdict. Do I have a foreperson?
36:17Yes, sir.
36:18When the jury walked in, like five of the jury members looked at us.
36:22Like they glanced over and I thought, okay, I don't know if it's a good sign or not.
36:27Verdict reads as follows as to count one.
36:30We, the jury, find the defendant James Addy guilty of murder in the first degree.
36:38The jury found James Addy guilty of first degree murder in the death of Molly Watson and armed criminal action.
36:44Oh, I was happy. I was so happy to hear that because my sister got justice.
36:50Did you feel that your husband should have been found guilty of murder?
36:53Absolutely. Yeah.
36:56Is he a killer?
36:58Apparently.
36:59You asked me earlier what I was surprised at during the trial.
37:06During the entire course of the trial, I failed to represent anything that I brought forward.
37:14Up until this point, James Addy has fully exercised his right to remain silent throughout the trial.
37:21But now he's ready to open up and give the court his version of what he says really happened.
37:28There was no way that I could have done this crime.
37:31And he's going to point to someone he says is the true killer.
37:36Thank you and have a seat.
37:49We're here today on 18AC-CR-01983.
37:53State Police is James Addy.
37:55The matter comes on today for flannel disposition.
37:58Two months after his conviction, James Addy is formally sentenced.
38:03Mr. Addy, having been convicted by a jury of your peers in charge of murder in the first degree,
38:07I hereby sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole,
38:12that being the sentence mandated by law.
38:15Once sentencing is over, the judge wants to hear from Addy about why he now claims his lawyer did not do a good job.
38:23Anyone expecting regrets or remorse is in for quite a surprise.
38:28Normally, criminal defendants keep their mouth shut.
38:33They say yes when they're supposed to, and they move on their way to get their appeal going.
38:38Not James Addy.
38:39He is scheduled to spend the rest of his life in prison.
38:43But he's got plenty to say, beginning by reading a love letter to the woman he's convicted of killing.
38:49Molly had the love of mother.
38:54Addy insists that Molly was the love of his life.
38:58He says he misses her terribly and would have done anything to keep her happy.
39:04Addy is now asking for a new trial.
39:08He's complaining to the judge that his defense counsel was ineffective.
39:13Honestly, let his defense attorney have it.
39:15He said that he did not think that T.J. did a great job.
39:19Can you give me an idea of what kind of stuff you wanted him to bring forward?
39:23The cell phone records, Facebook posts that were in discovery that showed the moment that somebody else was doing it.
39:37Molly had an ex who, according to him, had stalked her.
39:42Very much so had a motive to do harm to Molly as her wedding was approaching.
39:47We reviewed all of the evidence collected during this investigation and presented the relevant and miscible evidence at trial.
39:54And there was no evidence of any other person with a direct connection to Molly Watson's death.
39:59That evidence pointed to one person, James Addy, who had the motive means an opportunity to take Molly Watson's life.
40:06I would like to see him and ask him, what were you thinking? Why did you do this to us? Why did you do this to you?
40:18You don't see yourself as a victim?
40:20Not at all. Molly's the victim.
40:23She does. She's not here. She lost her life.
40:28You just think of the lyrics of that song that Molly loved so much from the movie Tangled.
40:35Bring back what once was mine. What once was mine.
40:47Just a couple of days ago at work, I'm a mechanic, and we have our bay doors open.
40:52And out of the blue, this balloon came right up to me.
40:58And it says, we love you. We miss you.
41:01And that was Molly telling me, hey, we're watching you.
41:06So it definitely felt good.
41:31You're watching me.
41:32That's a great one, so we kind of went to the sky, and you might find the stars that you're always looking at.
41:36Let's go.
41:37And that's the band.
41:38So we're on the same side as you can see.
41:41And how did you want to see your videos?
41:42Sure.
41:43So you want to see my videos.
41:45You'll see my videos.
41:47How did you do this?
41:48You look.
41:49I don't know your videos.
41:50You go.
41:51This is my video.
41:52This is my video.
41:53You look.
41:54It's not good.
41:55You're, I think, I'm not going to look.
