During a House Democratic leadership press briefing on Wednesday, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) discussed the push to ban stock trading by lawmakers.
Transcript
00:00Mike Johnson said this morning that he supports a ban on stock trading by members.
00:05Jeffries has said the same.
00:07Do you think that's something now that should be moved on very swiftly,
00:11now that there's agreement from both parties' leaders?
00:14This has been a bipartisan issue.
00:16Members on both sides of the aisle have talked about this.
00:19There's a lot of details behind it.
00:21I support a ban personally,
00:23but there's a lot of details that would need to be worked out.
00:27But what is difficult for members to also comprehend is,
00:31yes, we believe that members should be trading.
00:35We don't believe that members should use any knowledge that they have in order to execute trades.
00:41Marjorie Taylor-Breen and the chairman of committees have recently engaged in some of this that is questionable.
00:48What is also questionable is the president of the United States
00:53being able to trade his likeness with meaning points.
00:57And he and his family profit to the tune of potentially hundreds of millions of dollars
01:02in order to continue this grift on the American public,
01:09and not just the American public,
01:11to be able to profit from people around the country.
01:13So I'm in favor of a ban.
01:16But let's not also lose sight that there are plenty of things
01:19in which we need to hold the executive to
01:22when it comes to conflicts of interest and trading as well.
01:26Thank you!
