00:00Former Penang Second Deputy Chief Minister P Ramasamy is expected to face 17 charges of
00:07criminal breach of trust involving RM850,000 when he is brought to court tomorrow, according
00:12to two sources. Sources from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Attorney General
00:17Chambers confirm that the charges will be brought under Section 409 of the Penal Code,
00:21which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, whipping, and a fine if found guilty.
00:26Thirteen of the charges are believed to be related to the procurement of a gold-clated
00:30chariot for the Takkisim celebration by the Penang Hindu Endowment's Board in 2019 during
00:35Ramasamy's tenure as chairman. The remaining four charges are said to involve charitable
00:40payments made to external parties, two for educational sponsorships, and two for medical
00:44expenses. Earlier today, Ramasamy's lawyer, Shamsher Singtin, said the 76-year-old will
00:50be brought before the Sessions Court in Butterworth to face charges under the MUCC Act of 2009 for
00:55alleged abuse of power. Ramasamy has denied all allegations, describing the case as politically
01:01motivated. Last year, MACC opened an investigation into the 2019 purchase of a gold-clated chariot
01:07for RM800,000 following a complaint that PHEB had overpaid for substandard work. Ramasamy
01:13insisted that it was always gold-clated, not solid gold. He also said the deal went through
01:18an open tender, board approvals, and auditor general oversight.
