00:00:00Welcome back. It has been a pretty wild weekend here at Hidden Valley in terms of racing anyway.
00:00:06We've had fantastic weather, huge crowds. They've seen some awesome racing.
00:00:11Those two guys that we just saw there, James Courtney and Craig Lowndes,
00:00:14had a cracking battle at the end of that race.
00:00:17And James came up to me in pit lane a short time ago and said,
00:00:21was that good fun for you guys to watch? I said, you are crazy.
00:00:25So he really enjoyed the back end of that race and he's having a good run this weekend.
00:00:29And two times, rather, he has been on the podium.
00:00:34Let's check in with Larko, who's down at Erebus Motorsport.
00:00:37Yeah, Matty, and they're really busy down here.
00:00:38We've talked about some of the heat issues that they've had down here at Erebus Motorsport.
00:00:42We actually looked at them yesterday. I mean, we said these cars, and they are, they're a heat pump.
00:00:46And one of the really big challenges they've got here at Erebus,
00:00:49and there's not really much they can do about it, have a look inside the bonnet area here.
00:00:54There is just no room down in here for airflow.
00:00:57So as a consequence of that, a lot of this heat comes back into the firewall of the car.
00:01:02And you might recall I showed you the Nissan out on the grid yesterday.
00:01:04By comparison, it has this massive hole, if you like, this gap of airflow
00:01:09because of where its engine is relative to the body work around it.
00:01:13So that's a real battle.
00:01:14Now, Lee Holdsworth, there's his car just over there.
00:01:17They're having a bit of a battle with him at the moment.
00:01:18He's now got his bottom of his foot is literally burnt because that heat goes through the firewall.
00:01:24There's no carpet.
00:01:25There's some insulation.
00:01:26They've put some extra ducting there.
00:01:27And they've even got these insulators.
00:01:28That's a fibre insulator that goes between his foot and the accelerator brake pedal.
00:01:33But even so with that, the heat's going through the metal firewall,
00:01:37through the pedals, which are metal, up and into the base of his foot.
00:01:40And it's a real drama.
00:01:41And to give you an idea of the temperatures, we'll just review them again.
00:01:43And water temperature in here, I was watching it actually during that last race,
00:01:47114 degrees water temperature they were running.
00:01:50That's centigrade.
00:01:51Engine oil temperature would get anywhere up around 130, 140 degrees.
00:01:54The same with the gearbox back in the car inside the cockpit.
00:01:58We already know we see around the 50 degrees centigrade.
00:02:00The front brakes here, 1,000 degrees.
00:02:03Now, I want to show you whilst I'm here,
00:02:05I've grabbed some brakes off a road-going,
00:02:07some road-going Commodores and bits and pieces.
00:02:09Now, there you are.
00:02:11V8 supercar front brake disc and bell.
00:02:13Nearly 400 mil.
00:02:15There's your road car one.
00:02:16That's off a Commodore.
00:02:17And you can see just the massive difference.
00:02:19And that's how this thing handles the 1,000 degrees
00:02:22and pulling up that tonne and a half of car.
00:02:24There's a pad.
00:02:25There's your road-going Commodore brake pad.
00:02:28There's your V8 supercar pad.
00:02:29By the way, that's a used one.
00:02:31So you can see the massive difference.
00:02:32And there's a fundamental difference also.
00:02:34Look at those three circles there.
00:02:36If we look at a road-going caliper,
00:02:39that's your front brake caliper that pushes those pads onto the disc.
00:02:41See there?
00:02:42Two pistons.
00:02:43Now, if I pick up a V8 supercar one,
00:02:45this is one everyone has to use, control component,
00:02:47you'll see one, two, three, four, five, six pistons pushing from both sides.
00:02:52And what that means, as you can see there,
00:02:54it means a nice equalisation of pressure of the pad onto the disc face.
00:03:00Now, very quickly, the Erebus guys,
00:03:01I showed you the airbox under here before,
00:03:03this is their latest development.
00:03:04You might remember from Germany,
00:03:05the cars actually had two inlets, if you like.
00:03:09Now, we did some calcs,
00:03:10and we worked out that this thing needs to suck the volume of air per minute,
00:03:15the equivalent, the size of a normal-sized bathroom.
00:03:17So, by doing this, making this plenum bigger,
00:03:19this area here, the filter air,
00:03:21there's a filter just under there to capture the dirt coming in,
00:03:23is two and a half times bigger than what they had.
00:03:26Now, more air in means more air out.
00:03:28So, what they've done,
00:03:29I don't know if you can just see it under here,
00:03:30brand new exhaust system, secondary exhaust system.
00:03:33So, from the engine comes out,
00:03:34underneath all new secondary exhaust system
00:03:37to make a lot of power.
00:03:38So, really good,
00:03:39and that's been vindicated
00:03:40because we've seen an absolute improvement in performance
00:03:42this weekend by these Erebus AMG Mercedes-Benz cars.
00:03:46Great work.
00:03:48Well, Larko, I'm up at the pit lane entry area at the moment.
00:03:50It was fascinating to listen to some of that stuff,
00:03:52and how beautiful is it out here at the moment?
00:03:54We're in winter on the top end
00:03:57of this beautiful country of ours in Darwin.
00:03:59It's more than 30 degrees.
00:04:00There's tens of thousands of race fans over there in the stands,
00:04:02and there's some great spot over there in the shade.
00:04:05And I'm at the pit lane entry, as I said,
00:04:06and we spoke about this earlier in the commentary
00:04:09about how to negotiate this little chicane here for pit end.
00:04:12Remember, there's turn 14 up here,
00:04:13and when the cars cross that yellow control line there,
00:04:16they've got to be back at 40 kilometres an hour
00:04:18for the run down the pit lane.
00:04:20This is very, very tight,
00:04:21and we've seen over the years
00:04:22several people make mistakes as they enter in here.
00:04:24While I'm here, you look at these things on television,
00:04:27these tyres and these tyre barriers,
00:04:29and they don't kind of look too scientific.
00:04:31But I know from having spent time
00:04:33as the driver's safety representative in years gone by,
00:04:35there's an enormous amount of time, money and effort
00:04:37that goes into actually putting these things
00:04:39all around the circuit to enhance safety.
00:04:41See, they're all interlaced,
00:04:43and no, I'm not going to stick my hand down in there
00:04:44because I dare say there's some reptilian friends
00:04:47that might come up and say g'day.
00:04:49And yellow flag here, by the way,
00:04:51which we'll pull out on occasion
00:04:52when my colleagues in the commentary box give us a bad time.
00:04:55Quick shout-out for the hundreds, if not thousands,
00:04:58of officials that work very hard at these race meetings.

00:05:02Flaggies, fireys, whole pile of people
00:05:03that make this whole thing glue together.
00:05:05And because I've got a little bit of time up my sleeve here,
00:05:07we'll go wandering.
00:05:08What I would like to do,
00:05:09because we haven't done a lot of it for 2013
00:05:11in this championship season,
00:05:13is just show you this fantastic V8 supercar circus
00:05:16that travels all over Australasia
00:05:18and most recently to Austin in Texas.
00:05:21And just one aspect alone that I always find fascinating,
00:05:23definitely gets the heart rate up,
00:05:25is to look at these fantastic transporters.
00:05:27Millions of dollars worth of equipment
00:05:29in the A and the B trailer,
00:05:31and they extend all the way down to pit out.
00:05:34And at the other end, you've got Red Bull Racing.
00:05:35So clearly, as you can see by the signage,
00:05:38Norton, Nissan are lined up there.
00:05:40Up above here, corporate suites,
00:05:41and there's thousands of people up there
00:05:43enjoying their afternoon.
00:05:44And it is gorgeous out here at the moment.
00:05:46Those pit reporters,
00:05:47they're always whinging and moaning
00:05:48about how tough it is out here.
00:05:50It's gorgeous.
00:05:51So these fellas here,
00:05:52James Moffat and Michael Caruso,
00:05:54have not had the best of weekends.

00:06:15and move on to Townsville.
00:06:17Mark and I have spoken on occasion over the weekend.
00:06:19There are some tracks where drivers just click
00:06:21and there are others where they don't.
00:06:23Sadly, this has been a tough track for you
00:06:24for a few years, hasn't it?
00:06:25Yeah, you're right, Crumpo.
00:06:26So not something that I'm proud of.
00:06:29But yeah, clearly there are paces in the cars
00:06:31because Rick had a great day yesterday
00:06:33and Todd's up there today.
00:06:34So not so good for our side of the garage,
00:06:37but we'll work hard between the break
00:06:39and make sure we come back strong at Townsville.

00:07:40and not quite as good today,

00:08:03but yesterday was fantastic for us.
00:08:05I think the key to our success
00:08:06is to be able to qualify up the front
00:08:07and then try and hold our position
00:08:08because we're not capable yet of moving through the field
00:08:11if we have a tough day.
00:08:12So hopefully luck goes our way in this one.

00:08:22and the amount of time, effort, money

00:08:29and continue to go for a little bit of a walk.

00:08:34and an alternate strategy helped his cause.

00:08:42The different strategy certainly had you up there
00:08:44and charging in the first part of the race, Dino,
00:08:46but when you had to go back onto the hard tyre,
00:08:48it was tougher.
00:08:48Yeah, a hard tyre pace we've just been struggling with.
00:08:51It was really good fun at the start, I tell you what.
00:08:53It was awesome cutting through,
00:08:54but I had a bit of a drama in the pit stop as well,
00:08:56which didn't help.
00:08:57So, yeah, to be fair,
00:08:59I thought we were going to actually wind up
00:09:00a little bit further up than that.
00:09:01So I was a little bit disappointed,
00:09:03but another one today.
00:09:03Well, at least we got to see you
00:09:05and have a good run this afternoon.

00:13:22and probably achieved things that a lot of people
00:13:25that are driving these 28 cars up and down pit lane
00:13:27won't experience, so, mate, I can't complain, you know?

00:14:59to ensure that the cars are all
00:15:00at their 1,400 kilogram minimum with the driver,
00:15:04and it's very important, obviously,
00:15:06that the drivers maintain communication with their teams
00:15:08so that when they get the call to go to the scales,
00:15:11they can do that.
00:15:11We've had a bit of a chat to Gizzy so far this weekend.

00:15:51to get through the pack
00:15:52and not get caught up in any mid-pack shenanigans.

00:16:59Earlier today, there was a huge crash in the V8 utes.
00:17:02Not only tore apart a few cars,
00:17:04but also this safety wall and tyre bundle
00:17:07down there at turns two and three.
00:17:10So the crew were quick at it.
00:17:12It's been pieced together,
00:17:13and it's all ready to rumble for our final race.
00:17:16And as the grid starts to take shape,
00:17:19let's check in down there with Mark Barretta.

01:02:39reynolds winterbottom got as close as he's been this race to overtaking david reynolds
01:02:45and now the pressure is well and truly on
01:02:50and all this is good news for craig lowndes who's now 1.7 seconds clear
01:02:57it's the sort of thing that happens all the time matt as soon as there's a dice like that and you're
01:03:01leading you always want those guys to get caught up in this dice down the inside winterbottom good
01:03:07pass we saw the drama yesterday that's a much better decision for both these guys to get on with
01:03:14it dave reynolds knows that mark winterbottom's got car speed he's let him go and what and what
01:03:20actually happens now is you hook up behind and you go and find craig lowndes and with the cars out of
01:03:26breath down there in top gear at 7 500 revs being the follower actually serves you a little bit better
01:03:32because when you pop out behind the slipstream you get a couple of extra revs when you're david in
01:03:36you're just on the hard cup there's just nowhere to go no there's you can't produce any more
01:03:40performance now he's after lounge here with the bottom we'll see what the sector splits looked
01:03:48like he was two tenths quicker in the first sector than craig he had to pass a car obviously in the
01:03:54process this next lap will be telling because they'll both get a good clean lap and we'll focus
01:03:59carefully on the lap speed davy's under threat now from jonathan webb it's the techno auto sports entry
01:04:05behind so lounge had the gap of 0.96 he's now got a gap of 1.99 whilst the two fpr cars sorted
01:04:15themselves out now winterbottom's on the trail so this is the indicative lap and he did the same lap
01:04:20time mark winterbottom as craig lowndes and that included passing a car which you know is going to
01:04:26take some time away from you now we heard fabian coulthard from out there a minute ago saying about
01:04:30just how hot his car was now this is typical of any team this is erebus but you can see the the bank
01:04:34of data and data engineers here looking and typically you'll have strategy type screens if
01:04:39i duck under here these sorts of black screens and these screens over here will be data-type
01:04:43screenshots to do with car performance here's some engine guys and they'll be looking at engine type
01:04:47data now i can see down here they're running at about 100 degrees centigrade i looked at fabian
01:04:51coulthard's over there i'm not even going to tell you because you won't believe me it was off the dial i can't

01:04:59didn't find some cooler air he wasn't going to make it to the end of the race funny thing happened
01:05:03yesterday with will davison when it plucked the lower radiator hose off it when they spit all the
01:05:08water out you don't get a temperature alarm because there's nothing to read so there is no alarm for too
01:05:13cold even though it's actually the opposite the thing was melting itself so they did an engine change
01:05:18on car six last night and they had no choice so there is courtard still stuck behind rick kelly
01:05:26so under three minutes remember a time finish here
01:05:31the clock counting down to the checkered flag
01:05:34when we find the leaders again i think we'll find that jonathan webb is knocking on the door of
01:05:44david reynolds webb is yet to stand on the podium this season he's had three fourth place finishes
01:05:51daryl lee entry has been right in the mix this weekend so there's our race leader
01:05:55craig lowndes five-time race winner at this circuit the gap is 1.4 seconds now to mark winterbottom so
01:06:03he's chipped half a second away on the podium provisionally david reynolds
01:06:09webb tucked in behind him only two or three laps left in this one and frosty you can just even see
01:06:18as he came off turn 10 there he's driving it like a qualifying lap at the moment he has to
01:06:22he's got no choice three laps to go 1.5 go behind mate so let's do a lap speed check here
01:06:30up the inside is mostard he's given todd kelly a push now lounge has done 11-3 the pushing continues
01:06:35and continues and continues and todd feeds him off the road sends him to the grass for his trouble
01:06:40so 11-3 and around they go
01:06:45that was just tit for tat dodge and cast up all the way down the bottom of the hill most that started it
01:06:51they continue to keep on bumping and that's todd parked off the road point four point four faster
01:06:57on the last lap winterbottom than lounge he did a 10-9 on the last lap frosty here it is the run into 10
01:07:02most it on the inside gives todd a clobbering todd doesn't like that idea puts a bit of left lock on
01:07:07it sends him to the grass and then it continues down here on the run to the final corner and finally ends
01:07:12up in the side of it here's another angle you can see them both wrestling the wheel chas had nowhere else
01:07:19to go and then he gives him a tagging for his trouble and um they sort of self-cancelled each
01:07:25other in the end didn't they look at this it's getting close this is great stuff so while all
01:07:31that nonsense was going on back in the field it was 0.4 was what i was trying to spit out the game
01:07:39it's a big chunk that he's making you can see it on the graphic at the bottom of screen
01:07:43the lap speed this time round for lounge is 11.7 half a second gain by winterbottom at 111.2
01:07:49frosty's on the charge how's the encouragement from james small his engineer a bit more mate a bit more
01:07:58driving tight and straight and neat lounge will begin to feel the pressure here because he'll see
01:08:04that car in the mirror and the harder he pushes the more his car will slide he's vulnerable here at the
01:08:10moment lounge this matters frosty's had a shocker of a start to the season a terrible day yesterday
01:08:16he's recorded a win he'll be hungry for another
01:08:24one and a half laps left in this one this car looks good get the lights on but it just looks
01:08:29good doesn't it it's sitting straight craig's going to have to make sure that he doesn't excite
01:08:34the loaded rear tire here the right rear would be very very easy to overheat it at this point
01:08:38we're so used to seeing craig lounge do so many remarkable things but this weekend
01:08:44the highlights have been the poor efforts the tiny little mistakes so this has got to be mistake free
01:08:51much better corner exit for winterbottom he doesn't need to use as much road at the moment he squares
01:08:56off the exits and loads both rear tires he's now well and truly in the draft and lounge is going to have
01:09:02to make sure that he drives this car ultra straight we are just about out of time this is this is the
01:09:08last lap so it's now or never in turn five he's sliding craig lounge so watch winterbottom he's on him
01:09:13he's going to hurry him along through the esses look for him to dive to the inside but lounge has done it
01:09:18many times and he goes to the inside to cover covers at five frosty will push him all the way up to turn six
01:09:27a little bit of a lockup gets it sideways has to go wide around the valley where the crowd is going nuts
01:09:34holding it forward at the front of this field are duelling to the very end
01:09:38crowds loving it next critical corner is turn 10 can frosty get up the inside all the last corner at 14.
01:09:45it's what a quick exit would also make a big difference on the run to the flag they get
01:09:50through 10 cleanly lounge just trips over the curving slightly and so does frosty he drives shallow into
01:09:5514 frosty's looking for the fast exit if he gets a better exit it might be on watch this it'll be very
01:10:01close at the line lounge is going to hold you're unreal fantastic job he holds off a fast finishing
01:10:10thank you thank you not much left with nothing left what a great finish
01:10:20david reynolds holds on to third and jonathan webb in fourth that is skill that is class
01:10:28and that is v8 supercar racing at its best good race right when it finally got all tidied up and
01:10:35went into normal mode the back end of that was very enjoyable wasn't it great exchange between those
01:10:41two very professional good racing between red bull racing and pepsi max ford performance racing
01:10:49lounge prevailing frosty got a ripper exit there and it wouldn't have needed to be another 100 meters long
01:10:55well he was done it was the end of the race it was one more lap he was gone yeah

01:11:15it's a good thing he knows his way around here he's done every event here since 1998
01:11:21because the visibility wouldn't be too high for the cockpit of car triple eight at the moment

01:11:33shane van gisberg and sixth and there's scott mclaughlin a great effort from morrow engel so
01:11:38mercedes inside the top 10 and those two nissons just outside of it
01:11:42chas mostard in 17th so jamie winkup finishes in 19th position that hurts his championship lead
01:11:49especially with craig lowndes who was 224 points adrift of him coming in here
01:11:55closing that gap by winning this race the third time that lounge has won a race this season
01:12:00he started the weekend with some mistakes costing him dearly and now he's answered back so it really
01:12:10has been a day of redemption hasn't it for performance racing earlier with mark winterbottom winning
01:12:16and effectively clearing up the mess that was created in the 60 60 super sprint and likewise
01:12:22on a personal level for this man
01:12:26the smoke it's time to quit the habit lounges

01:12:40so popular wasn't that great to see the crowd up around turn 10 and along there just going berserk

01:14:28really really pleased for the guys they've had a great weekend um tim's tim's done a great job
01:14:33unlucky in the last one um and to come away with two top tens is definitely a big credit and and a
01:14:37boost to the team and i see your team owner betty clemenco she was just on screen they came and gave
01:14:41you a great big hub i mean she's put it hugs she's given you a lot of support in this team and uh
01:14:46great way to reward her i know there's a long way to go yet but it's quite clear this team this
01:14:51weekend has really started to state its case hasn't i mean with some development
01:14:55absolutely i mean you know uh typically for the first rounds we struggled when it was hot
01:14:59um it was hot darwin was hot for us um and and we went well so that's a good sign definitely

01:16:59win number 92 for craig lowndes and the first time this year that ford has had two drivers on
01:17:09the podium davy reynolds first trip up there so a pretty good weekend and he will celebrate
01:17:15the only way that he can after the break we'll run you through all the highlights some enormous crashes
01:17:21plenty of incidents amazing race
01:17:36it's fair to say there was a fair bit going on today boys
01:17:40race 19 of the championship by the time it actually got into full swing especially after that huge
01:17:46incident on the first lap this is what we were left with what we want a jewel right to the checkered flag
01:17:54and it was quite some story craig lowndes holding off a fast finishing
01:17:59mark winter bottom with one more lap would have got him
01:18:03craig had to use every last millimeter of road in that last lap just to keep it glued together there
01:18:08with the kids and uh gee it was a great race i thought that stuff at the end the way in which frosty
01:18:13responded day on day was fantastic but what about the stuff at the start i mean how do we explain
01:18:17what went on there it was just absolutely chaotic so this is what happened david reynolds starts from
01:18:23pole position for the second time this weekend garth tander here makes a really bold move at this first
01:18:29start he took a big lunge on the inside there he goes and we thought that would be the drama of lap
01:18:35one no wrong watch this jason bright gets pushed out wide this is the first signal that something's about
01:18:41to go horribly wrong somehow bright goes through but plenty of others don't tim slade david wall
01:18:48dean fiori up on two james moffitt in there lee holdsworth as well alex premer
01:18:55man this was a big one this is on board with fabian coulter that's the bumping between bright
01:19:00slade and mclaughlin they go off to the right he gets through but look at the chaos behind there were
01:19:06so many cars caught up in this and very lucky not to have more damage the car's doing 190 kilometers
01:19:13an hour that was alex premer that's all the corrective surgery that needed to be done on
01:19:17the wall and this is the restart very good start again for dave reynolds but they left him out one
01:19:22lap longer to put soft tires on yeah that was the story of the race and rod nash was saying it might
01:19:27have been in the pits but it was clearly the on-track difference of performance between a soft and a hard
01:19:31tire and that's what gave lounge the advantage to clear him in the pit stop look at this for tank
01:19:36slapper that is a good save young scott mclaughlin with davison makes contact at turn four and this
01:19:42is the wheel spin so they had the wheel spin as the car was being dropped this is james courtney
01:19:49pulling off to the side of the road robbie star looking on not happy about that courtney takes it in
01:19:55his stride he's had a very good weekend real resurgence for them but wing cup was penalized a 50-point
01:20:00penalty so remember that was a critical championship moment and that could have been
01:20:05a catastrophic moment will davison and garth tander touching down the front straight so win cup's day
01:20:13was done at dust before performance racing boys didn't mind that at all and this is where frosty
01:20:19started to charge so he knew that he could get past david reynolds on pace and unlike yesterday when
01:20:27it ended in tears winter bottom went through however this would end in tears and had been brewing all
01:20:32weekend chas mostard and todd kelly push and sharpen their turn and spin and nobody wins out of that one
01:20:40and then this gripping finale we thought that uh mark winter bottom could have got him down to turn five but
01:20:49the wily old fox that is craig lounge has seen turn five once or twice in his lifetime and he knows exactly where
01:20:55to go and he covered beautifully but that's a good result all around obviously for red bull racing
01:21:02australia to get another win again uh two victories out of the three this weekend with mark winter bottom
01:21:07the other one but that's been the talking point the ford performance racing comeback there's quite
01:21:11a bit to talk about there's quite a bit coming your way highlights tonight on seven mate or seven
01:21:17at 11 30 and then we have replays tomorrow race 17 and then tuesday you can catch races 18 and 19 the
01:21:24slot for that one o'clock in the afternoon on seven mate v8 extra next saturday a review of what's going
01:21:30on around here and everything else that's going on in the v8 supercar world and then of course our next
01:21:35event the sucrage in townsville 400 making up races 20 and 21 so two 200k races out there the great street
01:21:43circuit of uh townsville so really looking forward to that one but isn't it interesting i mean we look
01:21:48up and down the field here and it was the case for all three races that their stories left right and
01:21:53center not just at the front not just at the back mercedes great fpr fight back i mean what are the
01:21:58highlights oh we haven't had it we have not had a dud race at this place and the quality of racing all
01:22:05year this year has been extraordinary the number of winners i mean we only had four winners in 30 races
01:22:09last year we've had eight already from the same two teams yeah and so this year it's been spiced up
01:22:14enormously david reynolds two pole positions here he has had a pole position coming into this weekend
01:22:19we saw his brilliant drive last year up at bathurst to finish on the podium but still can't get that
01:22:25breakthrough win scaphie you've done it you've seen it you know how to do it you had a chat to
01:22:30him today what advice do you give to a young bloke like this to get that breakthrough i reckon he's
01:22:35just got to be a bit harder at it i'm i think he's really fast he's got great talent i just said
01:22:40have a bit more mongrel about you mate and that's what it took me i mean seriously at this level you've
01:22:44got to have it hey that's a surprise isn't it yeah imagine that talk about talk about leading with
