00:00Next up, we're going to be talking about how to refresh the data in your flow.
00:05If data changes while building a flow, you can refresh during the input stage using several methods.
00:12First, you can refresh the data using your refresh buttons.
00:17This option can be done at the top of your screen with your refresh icon,
00:21or it can be done by clicking on your input step and choosing refresh.
00:25Note that this option works for file connections, but not necessarily database connections.
00:31For database connections, you're going to want to use option 2.
00:35Now in this option, you're going to go over to the left-hand side connections pane,
00:39click on your data source, and choose edit.
00:42When you edit the data connection and return to the flow, your data should refresh.
00:47This will cause you to reconnect to your database and repoint to the file location where your data is stored.
00:54Note that if your data is sampled, you may not see new data right away.
00:59You should try changing your sampling type to get the new data into your flow.
01:04Now if these two options don't work, there is a third option,
01:08although I would say that we should only use this as a last resort.
01:12Reason being is that option 3 is to remove your input step completely and re-add it.
01:18You'll right-click on your input step, choose remove,
01:20you'll reconnect to your data source and drag it back into the flow.
01:24The upside is this will definitely refresh your data.
01:28The downside is that you're going to lose all of your cleaning step
01:32and other modifications that you may have made to your input step.
01:36So I would suggest choosing option 1 and option 2 first,
01:40and if those really don't work, try option 3.
01:43We know that option 3 will always work,
01:45but you don't want to lose the work you've done if you don't have to.
01:49Please note that if you do choose option 3,
01:52your flow will temporarily show an error
01:54because you've pulled out an important part of your flow,
01:57but once you drag your input step back in to where it should be,
02:00it will reconnect and everything will work again.
02:03Now that we've talked about how to refresh your data,
02:05let's go into our own flow in Tableau Prep and test these options out.
02:10So we're back in Tableau Prep.
02:12Let's try and refresh some of the data connections that we have.
02:15First up, let's use the refresh option at the top of our page.
02:19You'll see that we can refresh individual inputs here,
02:23or we can click the refresh button
02:25and it will refresh all of our data inputs.
02:28Let's go ahead and try a single input refresh first.
02:31We'll try and refresh plan of high school graduates.
02:34We'll select it and you'll see that our plan for high school graduates
02:38will cycle through for a moment
02:40and we'll get a preview of the data once it's been refreshed.
02:44Now let's try and go and refresh all of our data sets at once.
02:48We'll click the main refresh data icon
02:50and all of our data will start cycling through and refreshing.
02:55You'll see this on the left-hand side in our connections pane
02:58and you'll see the data come in to our main flow.
03:00After each is refreshed, you'll see it cycle through
03:04and once it's completed,
03:06all of your flow updates will appear complete and static.
03:10All right, now all of our connections are refreshed.
03:13Now that we've tested out option one,
03:16let's go to option two and try and edit our data connection.
03:19Let's click on teacher data
03:21and then we'll go over to the left-hand side of our connections pane
03:24and choose edit.
03:25This will take us to our file location where we connected to our data.
03:29All we have to do is hit open again
03:31and our data should refresh based on that reconnection.
03:35We should note that if you're connecting to an Excel file
03:38and you've used data interpreter,
03:39that will get reset based on you reconnecting to that data source.
03:44So you'll notice that our checkbox is gone
03:46now that we've reconnected to our data source here.
03:49We're going to check it again
03:51because we've been getting a little bit of an error over here
03:53because it doesn't recognize our fields anymore.
03:56Now if we click off of our data source and click back in,
03:59you'll see that all of our fields are back
04:01and our changes are still applied.
04:04Now as for option three,
04:05we can always remove and re-add a data source.
04:09So let's go ahead and right-click and choose remove
04:12and then we'll go back
04:14and we'll choose teacher salaries
04:16and we'll bring the table back into the view.
04:18Now again, this would not be ideal for a data source
04:22that you've already connected to and done some changes to,
04:25but if nothing else works, then you can choose option three.
04:29Now I'm just going to hit undo a couple times
04:31to get my original back
04:33because we did make some changes there.
04:36So if you've followed along
04:37and done these refreshes on your own,
04:40feel free to hit undo
04:41to get our original teacher salaries data source back.
04:44That includes some of the changes that we made.
04:46So we've successfully learned
04:48how to refresh our data inputs.
04:51Let's go ahead and hit save to save our flow.
