Next up, we're going to be talking about how to refresh the data in your flow.
00:05
If data changes while building a flow, you can refresh during the input stage using several methods.
00:12
First, you can refresh the data using your refresh buttons.
00:17
This option can be done at the top of your screen with your refresh icon,
00:21
or it can be done by clicking on your input step and choosing refresh.
00:25
Note that this option works for file connections, but not necessarily database connections.
00:31
For database connections, you're going to want to use option 2.
00:35
Now in this option, you're going to go over to the left-hand side connections pane,
00:39
click on your data source, and choose edit.
00:42
When you edit the data connection and return to the flow, your data should refresh.
00:47
This will cause you to reconnect to your database and repoint to the file location where your data is stored.
00:54
Note that if your data is sampled, you may not see new data right away.
00:59
You should try changing your sampling type to get the new data into your flow.
01:04
Now if these two options don't work, there is a third option,
01:08
although I would say that we should only use this as a last resort.
01:12
Reason being is that option 3 is to remove your input step completely and re-add it.
01:18
You'll right-click on your input step, choose remove,
01:20
you'll reconnect to your data source and drag it back into the flow.
01:24
The upside is this will definitely refresh your data.
01:28
The downside is that you're going to lose all of your cleaning step
01:32
and other modifications that you may have made to your input step.
01:36
So I would suggest choosing option 1 and option 2 first,
01:40
and if those really don't work, try option 3.
01:43
We know that option 3 will always work,
01:45
but you don't want to lose the work you've done if you don't have to.
01:49
Please note that if you do choose option 3,
01:52
your flow will temporarily show an error
01:54
because you've pulled out an important part of your flow,
01:57
but once you drag your input step back in to where it should be,
02:00
it will reconnect and everything will work again.
02:03
Now that we've talked about how to refresh your data,
02:05
let's go into our own flow in Tableau Prep and test these options out.
02:10
So we're back in Tableau Prep.
02:12
Let's try and refresh some of the data connections that we have.
02:15
First up, let's use the refresh option at the top of our page.
02:19
You'll see that we can refresh individual inputs here,
02:23
or we can click the refresh button
02:25
and it will refresh all of our data inputs.
02:28
Let's go ahead and try a single input refresh first.
02:31
We'll try and refresh plan of high school graduates.
02:34
We'll select it and you'll see that our plan for high school graduates
02:38
will cycle through for a moment
02:40
and we'll get a preview of the data once it's been refreshed.
02:44
Now let's try and go and refresh all of our data sets at once.
02:48
We'll click the main refresh data icon
02:50
and all of our data will start cycling through and refreshing.
02:55
You'll see this on the left-hand side in our connections pane
02:58
and you'll see the data come in to our main flow.
03:00
After each is refreshed, you'll see it cycle through
03:04
and once it's completed,
03:06
all of your flow updates will appear complete and static.
03:10
All right, now all of our connections are refreshed.
03:13
Now that we've tested out option one,
03:16
let's go to option two and try and edit our data connection.
03:19
Let's click on teacher data
03:21
and then we'll go over to the left-hand side of our connections pane
03:24
and choose edit.
03:25
This will take us to our file location where we connected to our data.
03:29
All we have to do is hit open again
03:31
and our data should refresh based on that reconnection.
03:35
We should note that if you're connecting to an Excel file
03:38
and you've used data interpreter,
03:39
that will get reset based on you reconnecting to that data source.
03:44
So you'll notice that our checkbox is gone
03:46
now that we've reconnected to our data source here.
03:49
We're going to check it again
03:51
because we've been getting a little bit of an error over here
03:53
because it doesn't recognize our fields anymore.
03:56
Now if we click off of our data source and click back in,
03:59
you'll see that all of our fields are back
04:01
and our changes are still applied.
04:04
Now as for option three,
04:05
we can always remove and re-add a data source.
04:09
So let's go ahead and right-click and choose remove
04:12
and then we'll go back
04:14
and we'll choose teacher salaries
04:16
and we'll bring the table back into the view.
04:18
Now again, this would not be ideal for a data source
04:22
that you've already connected to and done some changes to,
04:25
but if nothing else works, then you can choose option three.
04:29
Now I'm just going to hit undo a couple times
04:31
to get my original back
04:33
because we did make some changes there.
04:36
So if you've followed along
04:37
and done these refreshes on your own,
04:40
feel free to hit undo
04:41
to get our original teacher salaries data source back.
04:44
That includes some of the changes that we made.
04:46
So we've successfully learned
04:48
how to refresh our data inputs.
04:51
Let's go ahead and hit save to save our flow.
04:54
And this is the last lesson in this section of the course.
04:58
So up next, we'll be moving on
04:59
to our connecting to data homework lesson.
05:02
See you on the next section.
05:02
So trace to date 9.
05:05
Let's go ahead and hit save our data in the first section.
05:06
Let's go ahead and di confirming it –
05:07
see open textiles
05:07
Made in the first section.
05:08
So let's see.
05:08
We'll be following the following section.
