Former Test cricketer avoids jail over drug supply involvement

Former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill has avoided jail after being found guilty of taking part in the supply of cocaine in Sydney. The 54-year-old went on trial over allegations he participated in the supply of a large commercial quantity of the prohibited drug, after he introduced his cocaine dealer to his partner's brother in 2021.

00:00Well, Judge Nicole Noman sentenced Stuart McGill to a one-year and 10-month imprisonment

00:08to be served in the community by way of an intensive correction order.

00:13Now, the court was told that Mr McGill's introduction of his dealer to his then partner's brother

00:19led to the exchange of $330,000 for a kilogram of cocaine.

00:25Now, that deal was later linked to the very violent kidnapping of Mr McGill.

00:30Now, the judge said that although his knowledge was limited, his conduct resulted in the supply

00:36of that one kilogram of cocaine.

00:39Now, the judge also described his offending as a colossal lapse of judgment and said that

00:44his testimony was implausible.

00:47Now, we heard from his barrister, Toss Hodgson, outside the court this morning.

00:52He described it as a win of sorts, that sentencing, but he also signalled that there was more

00:57to come.

00:58Here's what he had to say.

00:59Mr McGill's avoided a custodial sentence.

01:02However, consideration will be given to an appeal, certainly in relation to both sentence

01:07and conviction.

01:10Now, as he was listening to the sentencing inside the courtroom, Mr McGill showed little

01:14to no emotion as he also left the court.

01:17He did not speak to the media pack.

01:19But when we spoke to his barrister, he did say that he also found that the sentencing

01:23was a win of sorts.
