Youth meets: How did German colonialism affect Namibian culture?

During colonial rule, German forces committed the Herero and Nama genocide (1904–1908). German settlers also left cultural marks, such as European-style buildings and clothing that remain part of Namibian traditions today. High school students from Berlin and Namibia ask each other if traces of colonialism still exist in their respective communities.

00:17wardrobe. For my tribe, we used to dress in like animal skins and everything, as

00:23well as basically never used to wear shoes.

00:26I feel a connection because like there are a lot of buildings in Namibia that are built by the Germans.

00:33You would have to ask a lot of heteros. There will be a lot that were like mixed with Germans as well

00:40because of our ancestors. A grandfather's mother is actually a German.

00:44Most of like our grandparents, they can now speak German, not fluently, but some of the like the basics they can understand.
