Curious residents in and around the Japanese coastal city of Tateyama, south of Tokyo, gathered to look at the carcasses of four beached whales on Thursday (July 31).

The sperm whales were stranded on the beach a day before one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck Russia's Far East causing tsunamis across the Pacific.
