During a Senate Education Committee hearing last week, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) discussed President Trump's cuts to the Office of Civil Rights.

00:21Thank you so much. I really appreciate it and I want to call up Murray Amendment number one

00:25and speak in favor of my amendment. It is very simple.

00:28It would require the Secretary of Education to restore staffing levels for the investigative staff at the Office for Civil Rights

00:36and restore the regional office structure that existed before Trump took Hatchett to that office.

00:42Trump has fired nearly half the agency and shuttered more than half of the OCR offices.

00:47These actions have thrown 6,000 cases into question and left students in 28 states without the necessary resources to fight back.

00:57We cannot protect students on campus if we do not have the necessary staff at OCR.

01:03If we are serious about fighting anti-Semitism, if we are serious about protecting students from illegal discrimination,

01:10we need to get serious about staffing at the OCR and I request the A's and A's on my amendment.

01:16We are following the staffing and organizational changes at the Department of Ed, but this legislation is not the place to consider that.
