00:00let's first get to online casino gaming pad you have a story currently up that can be read

00:04for those people in the state of ohio there's a chance that online casino gaming could be coming

00:09to a city in ohio near you yeah i mean we'll see we'll pump the brakes on soon uh because you know

00:18it does take a long time for things in ohio it seems like but yes a representative the chair

00:23of the house finance committee who's very involved in the budget negotiation situation

00:27there in ohio has confirmed to local media he will be uh is working on online casino legislation and

00:35will likely introduce it this year of course the ohio legislator goes all year so they've got lots

00:40of time to kind of discuss this and figure it out um and it does just kind of build on a couple of

00:46things we've talked about at least over the last couple of months one of course is the sports betting

00:52tax hike that governor mike dewine proposed heading into this year he said you know let's

00:57double uh the tax rate from 20 to 40 on online sports betting and that of course was building

01:04on the 2023 doubling from 10 to 20 so lawmakers didn't really like that because they said you

01:11know what that's two hikes in two years that's a lot uh let's not do that they also said no to a

01:17bunch of other uh tax hikes in the budget proposal by dewine and so this proposal is potentially looking

01:24to generate more tax revenue for the state of course that would be a lot coming from online

01:28casino all you have to do is look at the figures from michigan uh where i'm located and see how much

01:34more uh online casino brings in for the state versus sports betting but this also builds on two things

01:41from last year one was a report uh from the legislative study legislative study commission that said

01:47that kind of came back and had multiple lawmakers saying yeah let's go ahead and look at legalizing

01:53this let's do it the right way and probably tether it to casinos uh there's 11 land-based casinos in

01:58ohio that are uh you know active and and they don't want to cannibalize any sort of revenue from them

02:06so that is likely going to be in the bill um of course it does you know have a few other concerns

02:13along with that the lottery is concerned about it they're worried about consumer protections and

02:17problem gambling so of course the bills will probably address those kind of things as well

02:22that also builds on a legislation that was filed in the fall by a former senator who was key in the

02:30sports betting discussion and he was like you know what i'm just trying to get the discussion started

02:35it took three years and more than 30 bill iterations to get sports betting off the ground

02:40in ohio so let's just start familiarizing ourselves with it now talking about it and getting it going

02:45so again this is just kind of building on a couple of things first that study report

02:49from last year that said let's start to look at this let's bring in more revenue for the state

02:53but let's do it right then that bill from the fall that said let's start talking about it let's

02:58familiarize ourselves with it and let's go check it out and then of course the sports betting tax hike

03:04that did not happen so again as states have been looking at trying to figure out how to get bring in

03:09more revenue um you know in budget shortfalls so this is just another way to do it and we've seen

03:16several other states consider it this year of course there's only a few states in the in the

03:20country that have full online casino um michigan pennsylvania being ohio neighbors are two of them

03:26indiana's been thinking about it they've of course had a big hiccup uh a couple years ago with some

03:31some law funny business going on in there um they they talked about it and this year and are gonna

03:38continue to be a leading runner uh uh to be the one of the next states to do it so ohio is at least

03:46surrounded by states that that might prompt it to to go ahead but there's lots of concerns many of

03:51which cannibalization of of brick and mortar and problem gambling so but ohio is at least talking about

03:58it and could be a likely candidate in the future
