A Welcome Home for the Ages For These Amazing Little Piglets

Visayan warty pigs are critically endangered, so the birth of these energetic piglets is especially important.

00:00Here at the San Diego Zoo, we have two Visayan warty piglets.

00:13Like most pigs, when they're born, they're precocious.

00:17And that means that they're running around almost immediately after birth.

00:21They're extremely energetic, and they engage in a lot of play behavior.

00:26Now, the group that you see out here is a sounder.

00:29And that's part of their social structure, the social unit.

00:33And it's important for them to be able to interact with each of them.

00:37And they're learning new skills right now.

00:39They're learning to climb.

00:40They're learning to jump.

00:41They're learning to run.

00:42They're learning to interact with each other.

00:44They're learning to forage for food.

00:45They're learning all these great behaviors, and they're having fun at the same time.

00:49So they're quite a joy to watch.

00:55Visayan warty pigs in the wild are critically endangered.

00:59And that makes the birth of these two piglets extremely important.

01:03Here in the United States, zoos take part in species survival programs in order to help

01:09Visayan warty pigs.

01:12San Diego Zoo is also proud because we're one of the originators of that program.

01:16And we work with the Philippine government to help this species here in zoos so that we can help

01:24the species in the wild.

01:25The piglets are on exhibit with their parents and their sounder.

01:33And guests can enjoy watching them play just about at any time unless they're asleep or nursing

01:40on mom.

01:40But chances are if they come down here to the canyon, they'll be able to get a really good

01:45view of the piglets at play.
