00:00so thank you so much once again joining Abhinash Benji from England it's a
00:14wonderful possibility for the platform of research to have you on board and you
00:19are an academician a researcher a PhD and at the same time a wonderful profile
00:24in research and a lot of other social activities such a wonderful possibility
00:28for us to have you on board ma'am and you're also heading one of the
00:32organization which is into social work and research and academic activities
00:36iskama global and we've heard about it and it is certainly a wonderful platform
00:42for researchers academicians and people who want to make change in social
00:47dimension thanks a lot once again ma'am joining so we've got to cover a topic with
00:52you which is certainly a very important topic because many of us many of us no
00:57matter how qualified and what's a merit and what's our education we do
01:01struggle with this kind of problem the topic is very comprehensive the silent
01:06epidemic understanding stress and mental health in a fast-paced world no matter
01:12whether we are lettered unlettered educated semi-educated we all struggle
01:17with this problem this is certainly an epidemic so thanks a lot ma'am joining
01:21this is certainly going to be an important discussion with you so would like to
01:25move on to my first question which is very important question says hidden
01:30science of chronic stress would you please throw a comment as you know
01:36people sometimes don't even realize they're going through stress all right
01:42because the science could be so you know we tend to ignore them you know and but
01:47it can show up in so many different ways like people start feeling tired you know you
01:52might have pains in the legs and you know just feeling like something bad is
01:58about to happen and you know that sometimes after a good night's sleep this
02:04is why sleep is important my late mother used to say sleep can cure most
02:09problems you know it's like when we were young myself or my brother if we were sick
02:14she used to say instead of medication let them sleep as long as they can the body
02:19will heal itself or when you you know your your gut sometimes feels like you know
02:26like your stomach or you feel like that you're about to you know it's like that
02:31sinking feeling yeah and or and these can be some of the signs and if you find
02:39yourself getting irritated at the slightest thing if somebody says to you even if
02:44they're not being you know nasty or rude you just get you know it's like you don't
02:50want to listen to people it's like you feel irritated and for no reasons you know
02:56that you can see for yourself also if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by small
03:03things like you know something happens out of the blue like say you were supposed to
03:09meet someone and they cancel at the last minute and you get irritated because you think oh i've
03:15i made plans to meet them now i have to rechange my plans or somebody's a worker is meant to come
03:21in and you get irritated because your work is behind and these are the red flags that you have
03:28to watch out for you know so and hopefully do something more to um or you know detress by yourself
03:37taking some deep breaths and meditation but i'll get into that later on and also sometimes you have
03:43you're talking to somebody but your train of thought disappears you know you forget what you're saying
03:49or and then you're thinking what am i talking about because they don't understand what you're saying
03:53because you've gone off the track and that's stress creeping in so recognizing these signs early on
04:00is important because then you can recover or put steps in in place to get rid of that stress or deal
04:10with it so i mean you're you're also the you know expert so i'm willing to listen and learn from
04:19yourself as well because learning to recognize your stress early on before it gets too much
04:26is most important thank you so much i understand like sleeping problems and sometimes we forget
04:33because our train of thoughts simply disappearing a lot of psychological conditions that's important
04:39narrative that we've shared with our audience would like to move on to my second question again one
04:44question says impact of stress on mental and physical health please throw your lights you know stress
04:52like that can it can be like a friend or things getting out of your control again or somebody
05:00doesn't leave you alone you know you get persistent people ringing you up asking you you know same
05:05question again and again and you get you get kind of tired of answering again and again and over it
05:13over time it can really wear you down or if you're always the one that people come to for help and
05:20you are expected to be this kind calm person which is i mean i hear a lot from um you know families
05:29where you know whether it's the mother or the you know the daughter and all and but the thing is men go
05:36through that as well but because our men are taught to be have that stiff upper lip you don't share your
05:41feelings all right and uh so in those cases it may take to drink or or other forms and and this can
05:50wear you down i mean if you don't if you don't um say learn to say no and this is why we always say
05:56that it is okay to say no to something you don't have to be that good person and that's always uh gonna
06:05be you know uh the one that's gonna be doing everything you know uh be in charge um mentally
06:13it can lead to anxiety depression and making it hard to enjoy life you know everyday things in life
06:20and and it can and connecting with others and physically it can affect you because you don't
06:26feel like doing anything you don't feel like doing any exercise you don't feel like doing the housework or
06:31anything else and it can also interfere with your sleep because if you're feeling so run down and so
06:41worked up every nerve in your body is so tensed up that you you can't relax so if you're not relaxed
06:47you can't go to sleep so making you feel more and more stressed and run down and even lead to
06:54serious issues like heart disease stroke and so on so think of stress as a thief who's gradually
07:02stealing into your life taking away your happiness and health from under your nose so learn to
07:10recognize the science and learn and one of the biggest things we find is saying no to people we
07:17take on more and more and i mean i'm just going to give you a little example here dr sunanji that
07:23when people we were stuck indoors and um you're stuck indoors you know people were relaxing because
07:31there was nothing i mean there was different form of stress i being a typical person i'm a doer
07:36you know i like to do things so i started doing counseling because there were people asking look
07:42people are stressed and depressed would you be willing to offer counseling over the phone and
07:50before i knew it was meant to be two hours a day which is okay and i was like doing 12 hours you know
07:58and i was getting supervision myself so learning to but then not just this uh friends would ring up
08:04others would ring up so you find at the end of the day i was getting stressed out because i i woke up
08:12one day and thought why am i so tired and i realized because i wasn't having my sleep
08:17so once i realized that was my trigger trigger i started cutting down on my my you know commitments
08:29and taking stock on myself because i thought well when we come out of problem i'll be the one that
08:34needs help this is certainly very important area that you talked about like your first mental
08:39physical health now i would like to move on to my third question
08:43says effective strategies to manage stress when life gets hectic we need to take some solid
08:52you know plans to handle stress one of the best ways to in my opinion um is to take regular breaks
09:02you know do something that you enjoy i actually like maybe because i i was born in a you know come from a
09:09small village in punjab i love greenery and i don't know if you heard this saying if you get stressed
09:16up walk barefoot on sand or on grass you know because mother earth comes and heals you i actually
09:25walk barefoot all the time all right and um you know not outside not when i go for meetings obviously
09:32but at home i don't wear shoes because i you know because we were taught that we take our shoes off at the
09:39front door so don't bring the you know germs from outside and so we walk barefoot at home i don't
09:46even wear slippers inside and i i have natural grass so i walk on that you know in the morning or
09:52whenever i get the time and also to you know kind of take a deep breath and i find that the best thing
10:01for me because i i do have a stressful life in some ways but then i think being a stress management
10:08consultant myself i should be able to deal with it so one of the things i do is i i tend to give myself
10:16so uh self hypnotherapy because i'm qualified a hypnotherapy service and i take a few minutes
10:24and the best way for me is i start the day as i mean to in the morning i make myself cup of tea
10:31and i mean i'm sure people who will read this might think it's funny i make a cup of tea i take it back
10:38to my bed and i put it on my side table and then i read a chapter of a book not something too intensive
10:47something light-hearted it could be a mystery novel it could be a romance novel just one chapter
10:53that for me sets my day off and then i come out of it and i i haven't noticed that if i that's my
11:00my me time that's 15 minutes in the morning before i'm rushing around and sorry and and i find that
11:08that's one of it and the other thing is say it throughout the day if i'm rushing around
11:14and from one meeting to another i tend to take time out close my eyes for five minutes and i take
11:22deep breaths which is the you know for just a few minutes and then keep on at the same time saying to
11:29myself calm you know letting go of the tension and that for me works quite good the other thing is
11:37what we forget is exercise because that has two benefits physical as well as mental
11:45i'm not one of these people who likes to be in a gym you know in a room even if they've got the tv
11:51there or something because i don't find that relaxing for me to be honest dr synergy i like to
11:58walk i like to walk look around and you could say i'm a bit of a you know kind of being nosy
12:06looking at people's garden because i love i love plants i love flowers so the best thing is you've
12:13got a partner you walk in a park but if not even walking down a road is walking and you can see
12:20things all right if you don't have a quiet free line road even walking past shops you could look
12:26at what people you i'm i used to make up stories for my children even my grandchildren and we walk down
12:32there we say oh this person and we say what do you think he is you know like making other stories
12:37for them and that for me is relaxing and or practicing meditation mindfulness you know any of these things
12:49will stay with and help you i mean you see how much people uh 30 years ago didn't think yoga was a big
12:57deal now everybody knows that people are paying loads of money to attend but we already know those
13:05it's just taking time out in this stressful life now and don't underestimate the time like in the old
13:13days people you know women used to get together chit chat and have you noticed and i'm sure this is
13:20what we pay professional counselors to do here are problems but having a good set of friends that you
13:26can talk to you know and you find that your attention goes not only you feel more relaxed after
13:33talking to your friends even if it's gossip but sometimes you may have a business idea and you
13:38exchange ideas that's that that helps you as well and
13:43and you know for me this having good friends and good colleagues around means a lot this is why i think
13:55more stress came when people were sitting at home now after the lockdown because they don't have
14:01you know whereas if you went into an office you were with people you had a tea break you could talk
14:07around you know have a little chat and that's why we need friends we need isolation and this is what
14:13people you know we don't need isolation because people sometimes them don't have anywhere to burn
14:19their uh stress or their uh feelings of loneliness lots it seems like more of a naturopathy you've
14:27talked about like walking barefoot and reading a book the chapter and then yeah taking it because i
14:33to be honest i mean i suppose if you go so much down to stress or mental health you become depressed
14:39you do need traditional medicine medicine yeah but i think the best idea is to avoid because then you
14:48can become dependent on them because you might start on a low dose and if you're still not getting
14:55out of it you feel more and more you know depressed then the doses goes up so i always think try the
15:02natural way first like it's like more of a naturopathy walking barefoot taking a book taking a deep breath
15:10deep breath and doing some exercise talking to your friends can certainly be very much instrumental
15:16and natural ways to cut short your uh and mitigate your stress level which is very healthy for a human
15:24possibility to happen in a much better way would like to move on to my fourth question which is again
15:29rapid question also uh so it's like sociological and cultural influences on mental health you would
15:36like to have your perceptions well as you know different cultures view mental health in different
15:41ways and i sometimes you know one of the things that comes to mind i like i said i come from a small
15:48village well not so i mean you know my father's village was very small limited number of people my
15:56mother's was the big almost like a town and i remember in my mom's uh town kind of thing there
16:03was one child not child a person young person whose parents had died and and now i realize he was
16:12probably suffering from you know mental health all right but people you know he lived in a house you
16:20know and there was the window and sometimes people would tease him and it stayed in my mind for a long
16:24times uh dr sunday maybe that's why i went into uh you know um alternative healings and so on
16:32because as i grew older you know you realize that when people don't have children don't have someone
16:38to look after them especially in india at that time we are talking back what nearly 60 years ago
16:45they didn't understand so people would you know he's mad he's that so it's it's taken in different
16:51places in different ways like in the west would be in traditionally even in the west if people had
16:58mental um issues they were put away in um hospitals and given shock treatments electric shock treatments
17:06but now as time has gone on we have understood more and more and i think that even in the east i mean in
17:13in in india i think before the families used to take care of their own you know grandparents and so on
17:20and i think it was less mental stress in those days because grandparents had you know children to
17:27talk to grandchildren to talk to and now and now that we are all becoming isolated it has gone on
17:33the increase and in some places i still remember i'll be honest enough to tell you this i had a very
17:41serious accident which was one of the reasons i lost my job that i was doing very well climbing the
17:47letter very much in the school service i had an accident and that left me with a physical
17:53and a head injury right i didn't know i had a head injury nobody understood even the doctors
17:58didn't see it first you know and it was early because my own occupational health doctor who after
18:06four years thought this is not the woman we know and it was a lady doctor so nothing against the
18:12doctors but it was a lady doctor and she actually called you know checked out on the straight way
18:17so and then you talk you know people talk about stress talk about mental health but there's no shame in it
18:26we all go through depression you can you can go through uh you know stress because if you lose a job
18:32you have marriage problems or you're upset because uh you know uh things don't work out at home
18:39so there is no shame and we shouldn't label people that they're depressed all right and you know
18:46because it could because people assume if you're suffering from stress or you know or the labor gets
18:52depression people think it's a sign of weakness it's not a sign of weakness all right in fact i think
18:59it takes more courage to admit you need help you need advice than to keep on hiding and hiding
19:08until it becomes a boiling point and then you lose all track and this can and because people think
19:17it's you know either it's going to affect their jobs or it's going to affect their relationship with others
19:22they're reluctant to admit that they need help and so which makes it worse again so social media
19:30also plays a big role in this because it sometimes glamorizes people who might be actors famous people
19:41but if somebody normal uh ordinary human being is going through that they're considered crazy
19:48which doesn't make sense you know so sometimes we need to create a situation that everybody feels
19:57that they have a right to talk we're in the west are very lucky we have our samaritans which you can
20:03ring up it's you know you can pick up a phone and ring them 24 hours seven days a week you don't have
20:10to give your name you can just uh talk to somebody who's at the other end of the phone who's qualified
20:16and experienced and they are not there to judge you and also we need to understand that our environment
20:23can also influence how we deal and this is why i'm a great believer that we need to create
20:32uh you know an environment where it's a natural um you know uh environment plays a part like
20:40encourage more flowers because have you noticed that if you see flowers growing and you know trees
20:48coming up you feel more relaxed and i'm a great believer that the color green is actually a healing color
20:54and whenever i'm dealing with clients i will say to them imagine because green is also the color
21:01in chakras of the heart which is a growing so you say and and you need to open your heart to accept help
21:08and to give help and to accept love and receive love and also we need to create a um a kind of
21:16giving environment a supportive environment for people to feel free to seek help i mean in one
21:23comments from your end you talked about like the silent epidemic understanding of stress mental
21:28health in a fast-paced world you talked about like you know how to manage stress stress and mental
21:34physical health effective strategies to manage stress and social and cultural influences on
21:40mental health what i understand is like walking the talk because you walk the talk and you're a person
21:46of courage and dedication and commitment you've also mentioned you've had an accident and then
21:51recuperation and recovery is sometimes very difficult i've also heard had some uh detail that we were
21:59also at one point of time a serious candidate aspirant of civil services here in india gps union public
22:05service commission is that right sorry say that again dr mr what i'm saying like there was a time
22:14i figured out that you were also a serious aspirant of civil services uh women public yeah yeah it was uh
22:20with the what became the well it started in the education department and went into uh job centers benefits
22:28and so on and then dwp department for works and pension and and i think it's a good grounding for
22:34any anybody and but originally i started at 16 i started work at 16 in the private sector again you
22:42know climbed their ladder very quickly and and got married at 20 a day before my 21st birthday so
22:49being in the was in the civil service and after i after my accident when they medically retired me
22:55and because they didn't see uh i mean at that time because of the head injury and the physical
23:00injury you know after five years they didn't see that be coming back because i had to learn to
23:05speech you know speech and learn i mean i still sometimes if i'm stressed to get headaches you know
23:11which is as a result but you see you learn to cope with it i mean i received a lot of
23:16good therapy and song and that's why i trained i trained in hypnotherapy to understand why i trained in
23:22reiki i'm a reiki master three times over and because i was looking for answers you know we
23:29all look for answers don't we and um and but like my father said you know look for the answers deep
23:35within yourself and the only person that cannot help you is the god almighty and i'm a great believer in
23:41god and i think whatever life throws i mean you know if if we are given if something's taken away from
23:49us if we are clear of mind body and we are willing to help those around us our communities and others
23:57i think fate or the universe will always help us to achieve our dreams and and i think life is too
24:06short we only know this life i mean i do leave believe there is life after death but we none of us
24:13have seen that so i think we must do the best we can in the life that we have here and now be the
24:20best role model for our children our communities and help those that we can thank you so much
24:26ma'am once again responding these four important questions and it was a wonderful possibility i'm
24:30sure that a major chunk of your answers and narratives would be certainly instrumental and
24:36beneficial for uh audience at the platform of visa it was a wonderful possibility for us to have you on
24:42this uh platform ma'am thank you so much once again joining us thank you
