00:55le persone siano unicentemente in loro sviluppo.

02:31next upcoming years is not anymore the center left where i would hope that socialists are becoming

02:39again the workers party of europe you know close to the car manufacturers and so on which are not yet

02:45the case in this moment of time so the main competitor for us for the next years are the populists and

02:51the extremists we have we are facing an authoritarian wave all over the world and it is also coming and

02:57arriving in europe and that's why the biggest job for us is biggest party of europe as center-right

03:03party as epp is to protect our way of life to protect our our democracy in the european union and

03:10there valencia is a starting point for creating such a vision on the long run that's very interesting

03:15that you say that you have to fight populist instead of let's say the the middle ground of the

03:21politics but how you will get out the message because people consider epp people like bureaucrats

03:28in brussels isn't it so you have to be more loud maybe what we have to do is is to have again a

03:35convincing narrative a convincing story a convincing understanding about where is the future of our

03:41societies for example on the question of defense union we speak currently about comment procurement

03:47but other now the gasperi and schumanns they spoke about lasting peace in europe's forgiveness

03:58economy it's not so much only about startups and about the number of jobs we create that's important

05:14and pro europe that are fundamental things for us so you can name them it's le pen in france

05:19it's it's afd in germany there will be never a structured cooperation with them for us as epp

05:25so we are ready to include the serious conservative parties in europe for example george meloni showed in

05:32italy together with antonio tayane that they are credible that they are center-based

05:36petra fiala in czech republic is fighting against babish and he's a conservative politician and

05:40he should be part of a team of a broader team on european level that's why i work together

05:44with the serious ones but with those who are really taking europe into question like

05:49vital and afd or le pen is no cooperation possible at all but do you think that the epp

05:55right now is more right wing than it was let's say three years ago when it comes to migration when

06:01it comes to the green policies i wouldn't say so because you know we had already three years ago

06:07tough discussions about legislation like nature restoration law was obviously symbolic debates

06:13we had in the last mandate where the left-leaning france timmermans thinking was not anymore reflecting

06:19what the people asked us to do and also on for example building up fences if needed to stop

06:27instrumentalization of migration we did it in finland we did it in poland we did it in greece

06:31so epp was always coherent and consistent on this i would say today more and more voters follow

06:37our approach and that's why epp won elections in the last in the last years and we do this serious

06:42we do this european way we do it also based on rule of law like the geneva convention like respecting

06:48the asylum right in europe we are doing not it like the populist and extremist way so that's

06:53our middle ground in a way the serious center-right party who is providing answers in today's world

06:58isn't the epp too powerful right now with 12 heads of state at the european council and leadership of

07:06the european commission and you in one person being the leader of the big epp family and also of the

07:13epp group i mean isn't it too much of responsibility of power in the european union the mandates you

07:21describe that the outcome you describe is based on elections you know 180 million people participated

07:28in the last european elections and they gave us a mandate they voted here in spain in hungary in

07:33germany in finland they voted and they decided to stop the period of a left liberal driven agenda and

07:42now coming back to a center-right driven agenda that's that's normal in democracy but what is a bigger

07:47problem is that when people vote for another european parliament for a center-right european

07:52parliament things must change you know you cannot continue as the left wish to see that then we

07:58continue as nothing happens my spirit is i'm democrat you know we won elections we have a mandate to

08:05lead but we do this together with the others with with the liberals with the socialists and also with

08:10the conservative voters who are votes who are committed to be part of a european process let's talk a little

08:16bit about geopolitics because everything is changing under the presidency of donald trump does europe have

08:23enough self-confidence as one of the biggest market and one of the richest regions of the world to you know

08:30stand up and stand its ground yes i would say yes in this moment of time i'm quite quite positive when it is about the

08:39the answer on on tariffs for example our answer was a was a strong one but also not trying to escalate so it was a

08:46balanced approach look to what are we doing with the digital world so that we are implementing the digital market

09:01concentration that everything is allowed no in europe not everything is allowed you cannot lie you cannot do hate

09:06speech is there you cannot be anti-semitic in today's world in europe not everything is allowed and this

09:11implementation of our rules is making us self-confident that we believe in the european way of life not

09:18following the american the chinese or the russian approach don't want to compare them though don't get

09:23me wrong but where we still need more engagement is the defense side and the common external affairs

09:29policies and that's the task ahead of us when will europe be able to defend itself alone will

09:36there be ever a time when you know we can do it without our american friends i think that must be

09:42the the aim the idea that in 2030 latest we must be capable to defend ourselves and europe has all

09:50resources have all capabilities and has also the political will to do it so let's do it and for us

09:57as epp it's always important to do this together with the american friends we have some uncertainty with

10:02washington in their communication but in principle we define we have the same thinking about democracy

10:08about values about freedom and that's why we stick with our european pillar of defense to nato into the

10:15common engagement on the transatlantic side and right now the european union is willing to spend 800

10:20billion euros on defense rearmament europe this means also less money for hospitals for housing less

10:29money for schools how do you want to explain this to your voters well in this moment of time we also

10:36allow member states to to borrow more money so we pay this more on future perspective not so much on

10:41the current investments so people should not be so much worried about this but on the other hand without

10:47peace without stability the rest is not important anymore so what we have to do is to protect stability

10:54peace inside of europe and the precondition is that we can defend ourselves i think people understand

11:00the logic behind and we do this in a way that we can secure our social welfare system that we can

11:06secure the investments in a climate friendly in a in a digital world of tomorrow so there are a lot of

11:13issues on the table and we only can manage this if things are balanced finally let me ask you one last

11:19question it's about the heritage of pope francis he was considered as a very progressive head of the

11:26catholic church you as a faithful catholic how will you preserve his heritage in your political life

11:33i would hope that we keep our societies and also the catholic world together because the different parts

11:40the different sections the different bubbles inside of our societies are getting bigger and bigger

11:45and we have to unify again that's also in the tradition of the catholic church and also in the tradition of
