00:00Here we are at the University of Washington where TEDxUFW was held.
00:05If you wonder what happened after he got accepted to do a TED talk to data presentation, follow me.
00:15So everything happened really fast.
00:17You have roughly two months before you deliver your talk.
00:21And during those two months, I will be meeting with my student leaders from TEDx University of Washington, Brady and Anushka.
00:28Before I go any further, I just want to give all the students a big shout out and thank you for being so amazing.
00:34Because you all have school, you all have midterms and at the same time you carve out time to take on such a huge project.
00:41You are all incredible. Thank you for doing what you do.
00:44Now during those two months, we will look into research and studies that will support the idea in the talk
00:50and also come up with the title for the talk, which was due actually just four weeks after you get accepted.
00:57Now a tool that I can recommend to you is monsterinsight.com slash headline analyzer.
01:03If you are involved in any kind of creative writing, I recommend it.
01:07Because you can plug in the topic that or title that you want to use and it will give you a score.
01:12And ideally you want to score about 87 or above.
01:14And ultimately we decided on this title for my talk.
01:18Unlock the magic to providing better emotional support.
01:22Now the hardest thing about scripting for a TED talk is the ending.
01:27At the end, I wanted to have a call for action.
01:30But you want to write it in the most concise manner and use as few words as you can.
01:36It's not different from a magic theory actually.
01:39Now take for example, this coin trick.
01:41It's a good trick because you know something was going to happen to the coin and I got to the end fast.
01:49Right?
01:50Now conversely, if I would have done it this way.
01:52I mean it's the same trick, but because I waited to get to the end, it starts to lose its impact.
02:07The same theory applies in speaking.
02:11When you get to the ending, you want to be as short and concise.
02:14You want to get to it as quick as you can.
02:16We went back and forth a few times and we ultimately landed on this ending.
02:21But in fact, I should be the one to thank her.
02:26Because when someone shares their vulnerability and their pain with you, it is actually your privilege.
02:36And the magic is how you choose to acknowledge them, how you stay present with them during that moment.
02:45So, do you know someone who can use the magic of your presence today?
03:04So confession, here's something I don't recommend.
03:07I actually did not work on the ending of my talk until a week before the talk.
03:13And that's because I speak professionally and I have a few other customized presentation in my head already.
03:19And in fact, I was doing a keynote in Minneapolis just four days before the TED talk.
03:24But as soon as I landed back home, it is game time.
03:29So right behind me right there, that's Kane Hall.
03:32That's where TEDx University of Washington was held.
03:35Now, first thing on the docket is this.
03:37A dress rehearsal two nights before the talk.
03:41Here's what happened.
03:49Yo, we're two days away from the TED talk.
03:51And we just did a dress rehearsal at Kane Hall.
03:53And this is fantastic because you know what though?
03:55At home when I'm rehearsing, right?
03:57It's totally different from the stage because right now I need to walk all the way across the room, the stage,
04:03to get my card trick ready.
04:05So that is something that we didn't plan for while rehearsing at home.
04:08So I'm glad we got a dress rehearsal so we can get it taken care of.
04:12And then the night before the talk, we had an informal rehearsal in the classroom with the student leaders
04:17and also TEDx University of Washington coach, Rove,
04:20who was responsible for helping all six of our speakers fine-tune our speaking skills.
04:26Rove was extremely invested and dedicated to the success of all our speakers.
04:31I want to give a heads up to Rove.
04:33It was great working with you.
04:34Thank you so much.
04:35So with months and months of hard work and for me a year and a half in training and preparation,
04:40here is what happened on the day of the TED talk.
04:44Whoa, we finally here.
04:45After months and months and months and months and months of practice and rehearsal, we finally here, the day of TEDx.
04:59How do I feel?
05:00I don't know.
05:01I try to stay neutral.
05:02It's going to be exciting.
05:03It's going to be fun.
05:04There's no way I just saw someone who's doing the same thing over here.
05:05Brooklyn, what's up?
05:06Yo, what's up?
05:07J
05:24Yo, what's up, what's up?
05:29Rose a great friend of mine also a great speaker by the way. Let's go
05:38One of the blessing is that I'm on after lunch
05:41so I have literally an hour and a half to set up the stage and
05:45You'll see at a tad top why I need that. But yeah, this is very important right here
05:49Thank God
05:51Videographer's friends
05:52Hope this up. It's kind of so good on a big stage when it's kind of magic is a projector on there
05:58Yeah, so another hour to go. Usually I don't eat. I never eat lunch before I present so I'm just gonna chill
06:08As I'm waiting in a green room for my turn to go on stage
06:11I like to just relax by practicing magic. I even got a moment to show the students a couple of quick tricks
06:19This trick only work in certain angles, all right
06:21It only wasn't this angle onward passes line is not gonna work at all
06:25Actually, what I mean this trick only work with a particular number and that's the number six
06:30All right, so give me your hand if you may put right here right now if you can got it good
06:34So you can see that they have for the ease of memory remembering it. I have six sixes on here, right?
06:39All right, good. So don't forget what number is that on your phone six sixes it will work for you
06:43But it won't work for me because I'm looking at nine for my angle
06:47It wouldn't work for me because I'm two nines, right?
06:49So if you want to see sixes again on your phone, what do I got to do with the counter the calculator with the phone?
06:55Turn around so you see six again on your side, right?
06:58Oh
06:58What the hell?
06:59Wait, wait, wait!
07:02No, no, no, no, no, no.
07:03What the hell?
07:04Oh my god.
07:05That's weird.
07:06That's weird.
07:07It's got a reaction.
07:11You know, from working behind the scenes, I see how much hard work Sherrock, Jeff, Noha,
07:17Emily, and Zarya really put into the TEDx Talk because they absolutely crushed it on stage.
07:23I highly recommend you check out their TED talk as well.
07:26And on April 13th, 2024, 1.30pm, I got a chance to cross off a bucket list of my lifetime.
07:41In the beginning of my magician career, I was booked by a mums and pops Mexican restaurant to do magic.
07:50What I would do is I would walk onto a table and I would be like,
07:53Good evening! Welcome to the restaurant!
07:56fill1st!
07:58Thank you all.
08:01Thank you!
08:06Thank you very much!
08:12Thanks to this.
08:14Thank you very much.
08:17Perfect!
