00:00I've spent the last four months solo traveling across Africa, 12 countries in, 42 to go.
00:07And I'm on a mission to visit every single country in Africa by the end of the year.
00:13Why? Because I made a promise to myself to visit all 195 countries in the world.
00:19And Africa is the heart of this journey.
00:23I started this journey alone, no tour groups, no luxury plans, just me, my suitcases, my cameras, and we're still going strong.
00:32I arrived a few days ago in Ethiopia and I have to tell you guys that I'm so in love with this country.
00:38This is my second time visiting Ethiopia for a reason I'll explain later in the video.
00:42But I'm so happy to be back and so excited to show you guys who have not been here the beauty that Ethiopia holds.
00:49Ethiopia is often called the cradle of humanity.
00:52Scientists discovered Lucy over 3.2 million years ago, which is a skeleton of the earliest human ancestor we can find on Earth.
01:00Found right here in Ethiopia.
01:02Ethiopia isn't just ancient, it's fundamental.
01:05It's where we began.
01:07It's where coffee began.
01:09Coffee started here in Ethiopia and they're still making it the same they did thousands and thousands of years ago.
01:16Ethiopia isn't just another country on a map.
01:18It's one of the most important places in the entire world.
01:21Where would we be without Ethiopia?
01:23We wouldn't have coffee.
01:24We wouldn't have humanity.
01:26I don't know if we'd still have the Christian faith.
01:28Ethiopians became one of the first Christian nations in the world way back in the 4th century.
01:33The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is still alive and very powerful today.
01:37It's amazing.
01:38I'm going to show you guys and take you guys all around this country and I can't wait.
01:42Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:51Look at this gorgeous, gorgeous city of Addis Ababa.
01:57We got a little tennis court over there.
02:00Oh my word.
02:02No matter what country, no matter what country I'm in, I'm having my matcha first thing in the morning.
02:29Now I'm going to take, I have a friend who's going to give me a tour around Addis.
02:34I'm so excited to have food you guys with Yobit food.
02:39It's been seven years so I'm so excited.
02:44Yeah, this is my everyday.
02:47I've been using a lot of natural products that I've been buying here in Africa.
02:52They're amazing.
02:53For example, I've been using this as my body lotion.
03:00Oh my gosh, it's the best.
03:02It's mango shea butter, 100% raw.
03:04I got this in Namibia, made in Namibia.
03:07And then my shampoo, I've been using this.
03:10It's all dirty, but the Africology.
03:12I got this in Namibia shampoo that is so good.
03:16I've been using, to put on top of my hair, my Boab oil.
03:21I got this from Namibia.
03:23Namibia, I'm looking forward.
03:24I think, I actually know that Ethiopia has amazing natural beauty products.
03:29Moringa oil comes from here.
03:31Castor oil comes from here.
03:32So I'm hoping that I can find all that stuff when we go to the market today.
03:36I'm so excited.
03:37My friend came and picked me up and our first stop of the day was to go to Addis Ababa University to see the museum so I could learn about why Ethiopia is the only African country to never be colonized.
03:49I need to figure out, I needed to learn and figure out why this is that there are 54 countries in Africa and 53 of them were colonized and taken over by Europe besides Ethiopia.
04:02Oh, it feels good here.
04:16I'm coming from Southern Africa and it's so hot.
04:20I came from Namibia yesterday.
04:23Yeah.
04:24I needed to go to the museum to learn about why Ethiopia was the only country to figure out or to resist colonization.
04:45There are 54 countries here in Africa and only Ethiopia has resisted colonization.
04:52By the late 1800s, European powers rushed to claim Africa.
04:58Only two nations resisted colonization, which is Liberia and Ethiopia.
05:03But Ethiopia just didn't survive.
05:06It fought and it fought hard.
05:09These are some of the biggest leaders that led that rebellion against the Italians and the British occupation.
05:18Italy had its eyes on Ethiopia.
05:21It wanted it.
05:22After establishing control over Eritrea, it signed the Treaty of Wulachi with the Ethiopian Empire, Melek II in 1889.
05:33But there was a trick.
05:35The Italian version said that Ethiopia must be a protectant of Italy.
05:42And the Amharic version or the Ethiopian version said Ethiopia could use Italy for foreign relations.
05:48Melek was furious.
05:50On the 1st of March, the Battle of Adwa happened and Ethiopia faced a well-armed Italian army around the center of Ethiopia, which was Ethiopia back in that time.
06:05On March 1st of 1896, the Battle of Adwa happened and Ethiopia faced a well-armed army from Italy.
06:13But Melek had been preparing for this battle with weapons from Russia and from France and an army united across the tribes and regions of Ethiopia.
06:22They struck back hard.
06:24They said, this is our land.
06:25We kneel only before God and not before foreign kings.
06:30They fought and fought and fought tooth and nail.
06:33Tens and thousands of Ethiopians fought fearfully and the Italian army was crushed.
06:39Africa.
06:40This is the German, the Britain and the French leaders.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Sitting down talking how they can manipulate Africa.
06:48How can they take over Africa?
06:50Italy left.
06:51They went back home to regroup and come back and try again, but they failed again.
06:55And they failed with their bombs.
06:57While only Ethiopia had the old weapons they had been using for thousands of years.
07:02And they still managed to defeat the Italians that came back for more smoke.
07:07Can you believe they came back for more and got defeated again?
07:11Then the Ethiopian ruler, the emperor said, you know what?
07:15We need allies.
07:16We need to come together.
07:17And he formed the African Union, which consists of 53 of the 54 African nations.
07:24And he started to group together with the leader of Ghana, the leader of Congo.
07:29He said, let's make the African Union, which are literally every country in Africa besides Morocco.
07:35And they came together because they're like, listen, Europe wants to take us over.
07:40We've got to come together and form a union.
07:43Oh, all 54.
07:44There are 55 there.
07:4654 African countries.
07:4854.
07:4954.
07:50Only except for Morocco.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Oh, okay.
07:54Right.
07:55Morocco is now applying to be a part of it, but Morocco have missed a lot.
07:59Yeah.
08:00The African Union invested a lot in the development banks.
08:04They also have a development bank of Africa.
08:07Yeah.
08:08Which works in all parts of Africa and gives loans to different countries.
08:12Cool because I'm visiting every country in Africa.
08:14Yeah.
08:15That's what I'm doing right now.
08:16How many?
08:17I've been to 13.
08:19I have quite a way to go.
08:2242 more.
08:23Yeah.
08:24But that's what I'm doing for the whole year.
08:26For the whole year?
08:27Mm-hmm.
08:28That's good.
08:29Every country.
08:30Oh, yeah.
08:31And there are two different types of Rastafarians.
08:36One of them is the Nabingi and the other one is the Bobo Shambi.
08:39Right.
08:40Yeah.
08:43And is this the...
08:44This is the emperor.
08:46This is the emperor that they think is...
08:47And it's the last year.
08:48Okay.
08:49Rastafarianism is the religion.
08:50The religion.
08:51Yeah.
08:52Rastafarianism.
08:53It's called.
08:54Yeah.
08:55Rastafarianism is the religion.
08:56Wow.
08:57Kind of a religion and a way of life.
08:58Right.
08:59They dreadlock their hair.
09:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:01They don't eat any...
09:02Like in Jamaica.
09:03Beef.
09:04Yeah, like in Jamaica.
09:05Yeah.
09:06Exactly.
09:07Okay.
09:08And that's here?
09:09Or it was?
09:10The main route is here.
09:12Really?
09:13When they look up to our emperor, his name was Rastafari Makona.
09:17Oh.
09:18So they look up to Rastafari.
09:21I never knew that.
09:22And when he became an emperor, he was named Haile Selassieya.
09:26Oh.
09:27Oh.
09:28And the father.
09:29Oh, wow.
09:30So all the Ethiopian empires and kings are direct ancestors of Kilimshira and King Solomon.
09:36That ruled Ethiopia for the last three thousand years.
09:39Oh.
09:40It's known as the...
09:41They are known as the conquering land of Judah.
09:44Oh.
09:45Oh my goodness.
09:46Yes.
09:47I never knew that.
09:49This is an African Indian.
09:52Yeah.
09:53This is engraved in the foot.
09:55The prender within the engraved.
09:57Oh, wow.
09:58It's pretty.
09:59Let me tell you something, you guys.
10:01Being able to learn about African history in Africa is a whole different ball game from learning
10:07about African history in school.
10:10Let me tell you.
10:12It is two different ball games.
10:16Learning about African history in the textbooks in schools, especially in the West where I'm from,
10:21is totally different than coming here and actually learning about actually what went down.
10:26I strongly advise for you guys to travel and learn your history versus relying on a history book.
10:31That's all.
10:32I'm going to leave it right there.
10:33A lion that was a gift from the people of Gambela to the emperor of Ethiopia.
10:40Oh, thank you.
10:41Oh, wow.
10:44We then entered a part of the museum where it talked about the lineage of Ethiopian people.
10:49Ethiopian people are the descendants of King Solomon and his wife, Queen Sheba.
10:54They came from the line of Judah, which is the same lineage that Jesus came from.
10:59So when you're walking around Ethiopia, you will see lions everywhere because it is the symbol of Ethiopia,
11:05symbolizing that they came from the line of Judah.
11:08They are lineage.
11:09They are Semitic people coming from King Solomon, which is amazing.
11:14I did not know that.
11:16I've seen these before.
11:21The Himba people use this pillow.
11:25I was just in Namibia and they have the Himba tribe.
11:29They use these pillows.
11:31They look, the Himba tribe actually looks very similar to the Ethiopian tribe.
11:36Yeah.
11:37It's a typical...
11:39It's called what?
11:40African...
11:41Gebekah.
11:42Okay.
11:43In other African countries, they call it Mankah.
11:46Yeah, we have this in the U.S.
11:48We probably got it from here.
11:49Oh, yeah.
11:50Yeah.
11:51Still?
11:52Yeah, still in America.
11:53They still have these cones?
11:54Yeah, they still use it.
11:56I need more loose.
11:58Yeah, I need more loose.
13:28And so I'll put the link in the description box for my GoFundMe, the $10, $20, $30, all of it helps, brings me one step closer to finishing this crazy goal I have to visit every country in the world all by myself.
13:43And so I'll put the link down below and I won't take too long and we'll get right back into the vlog.
14:13This park is called Antoto, Antoto Park. Very cool.
14:25I was really excited to head to Antoto Park because they have an amazing view of Addis Ababa.
14:32I told you guys, I came to Addis Ababa for the first time seven years ago and it was day and night.
14:38It was completely different from how it is now.
14:41The city became so much more developed. It's mind blowing.
14:45The first time I came here, it was so run down and there wasn't as much infrastructure, there wasn't as much order.
14:54It's so clean and it's crazy what can happen in seven years.
14:58I also was really excited to try out, they have coffee, like a little cafe here right in the middle of Antoto Park.
15:05If you guys come here, it's gorgeous and I wanted to try some Ethiopian coffee.
15:10You guys, look how beautiful this park is, the Antoto Park, and we came here to get a beautiful view of Addis Ababa.
