00:15Villa in seventh place they're level on points with Chelsea they're only two points behind

02:05Or for something else comedy activist Joe Lycett explores Birmingham's across the globe in a mission to put his hometown back on the map available right now on SkyMax
02:18Aston Villa unable to put Birmingham back on the map this evening going down to that 2-1 defeat at Manchester City that is now 15 straight wins at home for Manchester City against Aston Villa it's an incredible record that they've extended to put them third in the lead
02:37Manchester City and it was a huge one the winner against Aston Villa in a game that Manchester City won
02:58by two goals to one it was an important victory for City I mean it was probably an important point against Arsenal as well but the game against Villa was the one that happened this evening
03:1014 shots six of them on target an XG that was lower than Aston Villa's nothing really in it in terms of touches in the opponent's box
03:18more passes in the final third by a considerable distance and 61% possession for Manchester City
03:25So a big big game for Manchester City and a big big win that takes them into third place in the Premier League
03:38Mateus Nunez and Ruben Diaz with Juliet Farrington
03:40Ruben, Matias, we were just saying before we started recording this interview that goal for you came just at the right time
03:49Yes, the game was very important I mean this was a very tough game a very tough opponent and we came with the mentality that we needed to win this game and that's what happened
04:00First Premier League goal as well you saved it until the 94th minute
04:03That's what I said it's the perfect timing I couldn't come in in a better time
04:07Just what does this do for the remaining games that you have left in what you're trying to achieve?
04:13You talk about them being cup finals such a grandstand finish to what was such a tense match
04:19Well, obviously they they're on the run with us to to this top five
04:24And because of it it was a it was a special game to get the three points
04:28But obviously still four games to go correct and all of them will be massively important
04:34So we keep on going but obviously
04:36Really important today to get the three points here
04:39But you're putting that distance aren't you against a direct competitor for what you want to achieve which is Champions League football next season
04:47Yeah, of course and we know how tight it is and how tight it's going to be until the end
04:51So today was was I don't know how important it was. I can't quantify it
04:57And it's a massive step for us
04:59It's one of those when you say quantify it's one of those isn't Matias that you quantify you
05:03You come at the end of the season and look back and see just how huge this win could be
05:07I mean we're going to see in the end of the season how how big this win is going to be
05:12But I think every three points now until the end of the season
05:15It's going to be very important. I mean, we're going to go for every game trying to get the three points
05:19And when I spoke to you yesterday Ruben, we had quite a conversation
05:22Kind of went deep on some levels, but you talked about emotional availability. We won't go there again
05:27But you talked about you know in the bad times the behavior and the reaction to some players and how you kind of
05:33Aligned together again accepted the position that you're in and you're ready to go for this finish. I mean
05:41This means everything to us
05:43we need to
05:45We need know we know exactly
05:47In which circumstances we are and these top four top five means everything to us. So this is our
05:53Premier League this season. This is our our main trophy of course
05:57We still have the FA Cup. We were still gonna have the club World Cup
05:59But this right now it means everything to us and you do have the FA Cup
06:02And it's coming up on the horizon this weekend. We're going to try to win as well
06:06Of course, we want to to lift the trophy
06:09It's a very important game for us to try to to win the semi-final and then go for the final
06:15So yeah, hopefully we'll do it
06:16Last question you enjoyed the noise you enjoy the celebrations inside the Etihad. It was something else wasn't it?
06:21Yeah, it was amazing. Well, it's one of them. I think I wouldn't rather to to win it any other way
06:27Brilliant stuff. Well, well done tonight. Thank you
06:29Thank you
06:31It is a great way to win a game with a late late winner in that game and particularly for Mateus Nunez with this first Premier League
06:38Goal for the for the club to come at such a crucial moment in in such a
06:42Crucial race because as they outlined there this season their trophy is finishing inside the top five
06:49It is and of course we've got the FA Cup to come as well big semi-final the weekend
06:53You know obviously we're talking about De Bruyne before the show
06:55I'll give them a send-off probably get their hands on FA Cup and finish in Champions League football
06:59But yes a massive goal for Nunez you say rightly so in the last minute
07:02That's your right back popping up in the box as well
07:04But like O'Reilly at Everton at the weekend both fullbacks popping on me in very important goals for the football club and
07:10And again when they talk about the race for the top five, it's it's such a huge three points
07:14Aston Villa only Southampton have conceded more goals a game more than the the teams around them
07:20So too of Aston Villa and they're in seventh place as things stand level on points with Chelsea and two points behind Newcastle who are now in that that fifth spot
07:28It's starting to open up a little bit of a gap between third and seventh and particularly with that that one game extra played for Villa
07:37How big an impact will that defeat have on them do you think?
07:40Well at time will tell of course they've got the FA Cup themselves at the weekend to play and can they bounce back?
07:46Me and Roy were looking off there the fixtures they've got relatively fixtures we think that they could probably get
07:50Maybe maximum points from Bournemouth away maybe is one of the trickier ones but in general I still think they're very much on the race
07:58There's no doubt about that I think we mentioned the squad that Aston Villa have the players off the bench tonight as well
08:02They've got a very very strong squad and the likes of Newcastle and Nottingham Forest
08:06Have still got quite a bit of work to do to make the top five
08:09I think Newcastle are home they've switched next so the luck of that is a big chance of getting three points
08:13Problems off of Villa and they seem to obviously they're running out of games and the goal difference is a big problem for them
08:18That's why I think it's such a setback tonight the type of goals they gave away you look at the manager and talk about them being well organised
08:23But you saw that stat as you said giving up late goals
08:25You know that would be costly at the end of the season for them I think for the Champions League
08:29You say that they're running out of games and they've had the game against their Champions League rival
08:34Which is or can almost feel like a bonus victory can't it and then there's lots of teams in that race for Champions League football
08:40Who are meeting each other between now and the end of the season that game between?
08:44Nottingham Forest and Chelsea on the last day of the season might prove to be crucial or it might be done and dusted by their Chelsea
08:50You've got have got Newcastle as well. There's this big game
08:53Yeah, there'll be one or two twists, but if you're from Villa's point of view tonight when you get yourself in a position where you've got a draw and you think
08:59You're not good. You're not capable of going to win the game. Don't lose it
09:03Don't lose it. Keep that momentum into the season it keeps it a bit near you to draw momentum to feel good factor players know big and a bad result
09:10You've seen the reaction of Man City tonight and you've seen the reaction of the Villa and the Villa manager the players
09:15They know what a big moment that was last kick it again. It feels every match day
09:20This swings hugely in terms of the of the percentages and it feels as though even just in terms of the feel it swings massively
09:26Obviously City now with a 95.1% chance of finishing inside the top five Villa down at 17.3%
09:34Does that look about right to you? I mean it could all it could all change what that can't bring into the equation is the human factor in and how
09:41Other games going on and where the players are in their head normal computer. I would say I would say super when you're dealing with five teams in five games remaining
09:49I'm gonna say a super I do I do think I do you think for the teams around and the challenge
09:53I think city will definitely qualify for the challenge
09:55I'll say that put my neck on the line now especially after such a late goal
09:58So I think that's a good thing for a few of the teams
10:00Aston Villa probably got the most ground to make up
10:02But then I look at the the fixtures that Aston Villa and I fancied them they won a lot of them fixtures
10:06You know Newcastle second-last games Arsenal away that's a that's a tough fixture you hope they may still be in Champions League and
10:11Be distracted by that perhaps so there's all ifs and buts and maybe even if you should home
10:15You think that's an easy game, but you just never know when it seems more or less relegated the pressures off
10:19That's there's all sorts of permutations, but it's a great race, isn't it?
10:23I mean that's that's what makes it a great race the fact that it is so difficult to predict and that it's changing all the time
10:28We'll reflect on that again very shortly, but let's get some more Aston Villa reaction now. Uri Tielemans is with Juliet Farrington
10:34Uri in a matter of seconds. It just changes doesn't it you could see the reaction amongst the Villa supporters amongst the the bench in front of me in front of Unai Emery
10:44That's pretty crushing wasn't it?
10:46Yeah, it was
10:47Yeah, it's so frustrating to to lose
10:51last
10:52last minute of the game
10:54where
10:56We fought really hard
10:58We blocked
11:00Pretty much everything other than their goal their first one
11:03And then you have to lose like that on that last action was so frustrating
11:07It's those moments isn't it it could have gone off to such a perfect start with Marcus 17 seconds into the game
11:13Obviously he gets you back level with the penalty
11:16But it's those moments that that change and then right at the very end. Yeah, well
11:21We get the first chance they get the last one they score we don't
11:25That's football, you know
11:27Like I said, it's it's just really frustrating
11:30But you're still in it. It's still so intense. There's still so much to fight for isn't there and there's still these places that are up for grabs
11:39Which is what you want to achieve? Yeah for sure. I mean, we've got four games in the Premier League left
11:44So we we're just going to give our all hopefully
11:47Get a good result in and be back where we where we want to be and hopefully be in the in the Champions League positions, but
11:53Yeah, we just we just like I said disappointed for tonight and we just have to analyze and and see where we can be better
12:02Analyze and then pick yourself up, you know to go into the FA Cup and and that's something else you're trying to win this season as well
12:08Yeah, definitely Saturday
12:10We've got the semi-final which we hopefully can can win and then we'll see from there
12:14But yeah, no, we we we're now full focus on on that. But but yeah, we're gonna be
12:21Having a tough night and then focus on that recover well go well this weekend. Thank you. Thank you
12:27And the players will say we need to recover from this
12:32We need to focus again on the remaining fixtures the FA Cup semi-final the four remaining Premier League fixtures
12:37But how hard is that to do well?
12:38It might be helped that no they can go into the FA Cup and just step back from the league and we mentioned before it again
12:43But your big players turning up that was a big mistake from their experienced goalkeeper as well
12:46You you don't need that at this stage of the season you're thinking maybe one or two of the young players might come up short
12:51But when you look at your spiny your team your rocks all the players who've been there and done it
12:55For the opening goal, you have a man back home this evening
12:58Coming up next we'll hear from a man who put a frustrated figure on the touchline at times Pep Guardiola
13:04Celebrations at the end for him though. We'll also get the thoughts of Unai Emery
13:18So I think Dallas minutes games winning belongs
13:21Liverpool especially how many times with Jurgen there in the last minute scores Arsenal as well with Mikel
13:28We are not used to so I'm really really happy, you know for the goal that we scored at the end because
13:34We are in the last four or five games and and you know with a
13:39Champions League contender, you know qualification like is Aston Villa like is
13:44you know Aston Villa is a
13:46Team like in the last month a proof is one of the top of the best teams in a do you know in a
13:53in a
13:54In Europe and we will play really really good in all departments in our
13:59Aggressive in our duels the back four was unbelievable in all departments. So yeah, I'm really pleased for the game we played
14:04You just kept going and in that 94th minute when you scored that winner and you talk about you haven't had that feeling for a long time
14:10What was that feeling like to have it back again? Come on?
14:14So football is emotion the feeling for the fans for the players for ourselves
14:18So how important we have a lot of pressure, you know for the club go to the Champions League next season and in the last two games
14:24Everton away and here Aston Villa were so so difficult and the people the players behave unbelievable
14:30So we are really pleased in that terms. I think you celebrated for more than than half a minute. I've never seen you jump so high
14:37I was so happy. Yeah, I have to admit it
14:41so
14:42That's my message. Okay, try to don't lose the game because one one is not a better result, but it's not bad
14:47But the action from Jeremy I know how is he can create something for his base and after that
14:51She was brilliant and and we arrived place in the box, you know a lot of players. So
14:56So football if you can you are in this business to leave the you know the disappointment, but always a good moment
15:02But also when you talk about that word you need
15:05Emotion you use that word emotion you go through every emotion, but at the end to have the emotion that you have
15:12It's what keeps you going
15:14Yeah, I had to do so that the team fought a lot. So the performance was really really good in all departments
15:20We it's a team like they can play they can run and they can they
15:25How they they they associate each other. So it's a fantastic team. So and we were able to do it
15:31I know you don't like look back and think it hasn't been the season you wanted to
15:36But all the players now have accepted that and it's clear they've accepted that and they are going and they are driving forward
15:41to what can be achieved
15:44When you look at it
15:45Do you think this could be a real special season bearing in mind you've got the fa cup as well?
15:51The season has been bad
15:53So it's not so it's going to happen the last month and a half so the season has not been good
15:58It doesn't matter where is the final
16:00With the will be incredible tough against nottingham forest or qualification for the champs
16:03So the reality is that so would determine
16:06What make you feel the season is good is the premier league not the champions league not fair cups is the
16:11consistency in the champions league and in the premier league and we have not been but
16:16It happened you know and sometimes you have bad seasons for many reasons that everybody knows but he tried to
16:23Until the end to try to avoid the damage and
16:27And of course you can't qualify for the championship because look the team so
16:32Liberals are already champion will be champion and arsenal
16:36What can I say but look the other ones
16:38Chelsea stumbilla and newcastle
16:41Ourself and nothing on forest now come up so the level of the teams is
16:47It's outstanding so that's why
16:49Always made this step to go there is literally important okay
16:53Very quickly, but you have the semi-final this weekend an opportunity to go to the fa cup final
16:58You have this great opportunity now to to play in champions league football next season
17:02Which is what you wanted it to be
17:04But you've just spoken about the feeling and having it back and how important is it
17:08To have that feeling back for this stage of the season with the remaining games to go
17:12No, since the Bournemouth gave me a fair cup the the team changed
17:16We can play good and now Trafford for example
17:18We don't play good in the game and never turn with some players and play good
17:22But we fought you know, we were there we tried to win duels and
17:26And and that is the principle in this season we didn't have that we didn't have the energy for many reasons for
17:32For
17:33Situations that I know perfectly we didn't we didn't have that but
17:37Okay, nobody's late and would lessen for the next season keep smiling pep enjoy the weekend
17:42I will
17:45He was just about smiling he said he wasn't smiling as much as he was at this point which is when that goal went in
17:51Manchester city's latest winner at home in the premier league since november
17:562022 it came on 93 minutes and 21 seconds
18:00Incidentally for comparison sergio aguero's winning goal that won manchester city the title 93 minutes and 20 seconds
18:07That's how late this goal was but he said we don't get that feeling very often at manchester city
18:13Only two teams have scored more goals than manchester city this season in in added time
18:18So he's used to that feeling
18:20But maybe not that kind of tension in terms of what he's trying to achieve and that that sense of relief
18:26Yeah, I think so and I think the standards they've set over the last three or four years and have just come off of it
18:30I think he's been really harsh on his team there with his comments and it's not been quite obviously not been consistent
18:35They're the tough start obviously huge setback with rodri and they've not been at their very best
18:40But that was always going to happen
18:42But I still think if they can win the fa cup and getting that chat misleagued and it's not bad going
18:46But it's just because they've set the standards so high over the last few years that any sort of drop-off
18:50Kind of does look back
18:51But if you step back and i'm sure pep will it with the staff come to summer look at the bigger picture and go
18:56You know concerning all the setbacks and disappointments we had even missing harlan tonight
19:01This group of players have dug in for all their qualities you've got to dig into the professional footballer and they've done that again tonight
19:06I'm not saying they were brilliant to watch or create loads of chances
19:10But they've found that bit of will and that spirit and somebody off the bench to create something
19:14It shows a good mentality from their subs i thought probably villa subs lacked that when they came on
19:19I don't think they gave him any sort of impetus
19:22um
19:22So that's why i would give give all the credit to city tonight
19:25Yeah, it's been unusual for villa not to get any kind of momentum from that their subs that's something that's worked for them
19:30So far this season as for for manchester city can both things be true for city shay the fact that it has been
19:36Overall a disappointing season but from where city have been at times this season that to qualify for the champions league and win the fa cup can make it
19:46To bring a degree of success. Yeah, it's kind of like the perfect storm as roy mentions injuries and and you know
19:51The four times they're four times premier league champions in a row at some point they're going to drop off
19:55They're going to be a a bit of a dip the team will need rebuilding of course pep will have to do that over the summer as well
20:01Um, but they're third in the premier league. It's not like a crisis. They're sitting halfway down the table
20:05They're in an FA cup semi-final at the weekend, you know
20:08I again the likes of the brown and will leave in the summer
20:10I'm sure he'll want to leave with his hands on one the final trophy um
20:14But it's not been a disaster. I mean pep has not always looked at his happiest this season
20:18I mean that celebration was was the most I've seen him celebrate probably ever, you know
20:22But again, it's he it shows how much she still loves the game
20:25He's emotionally involved with the football club and I'm sure he does want to be a part of the rebuild and bring the good times back
20:31Not that it's that barren at the minute
20:33But you understand I mean bring the premier league title back to this to this football club
20:36But yeah, there's been a lot of key players missing and he mentioned rodri
20:40You know such a long time ago now, but he's the ballon door winner like he's a top top player missing all season, but
20:46You know, it's liverpool's time this year and and city i'm sure we'll bounce back next season
20:50Yeah, pep guardiola said he's not too used to celebrating late late winners for manchester city
20:55Unai emery though and aston villa are used to conceding late goals only southampton have conceded more goals in added time than villa this time
21:03They've gone down to one at the hands of manchester city. Here is unai emery with juliette farrington
21:08Unai so close to a point. I saw your reaction when manchester city scored their match winning goal
21:16You looked crushed and you knew the impact of what that goal has done
21:21Good evening. We can't waste time
21:25We lost the last
21:27Minute this this match, but we compete well
21:30We were close to draw we were
21:33Trying to win the match as well with the the players. I assumed trying to get good impact
21:39But of course they did the same and they scored that we didn't score and overall in 90 minutes
21:44Of course they dominated more, but we played very good
21:47competitive match and we had our chances as well
21:51We had to accept it
21:53Take a lot of positive things now is moment to try to be positive everything we are doing
21:58I'm going to analyze the match try to
22:01To get a lot of information through it
22:03But use positive things for saturday in semi-final and try to separate now each competition we are going to play
22:08I'm full and in 10 days now
22:11We are
22:12Trying to to focus quick quick and positive the match on saturday
22:17It is a very quick turnaround talk to me about the positives then what did you take
22:22From this tonight that you can take into your remaining fixtures we analyze and of course everything we did before as well
22:29We got a lot of positive information about everything tactically individually and try to get
22:36Full energy positive energy for saturday what have you said to the players at full time the same and i am sending here
22:42The message is be positive and try to accept it and we can't waste time now
22:47We have to keep going and be positive and prepare the match for saturday you've been in football so long
22:52You know it's all about moments you had those moments 17 seconds in with markers could have scored hit the post
22:58And obviously they go and win with probably the last moment of the game
23:03It's so intense these champions league places the european places which you want to be competing in next season
23:10You still have every chance of getting where you want to be
23:15Of course we are playing in this level and we want to try to
23:19To keep the level we are achieving last year two years ago this year
23:24And try to be very very demanding in our way how we can build
23:29As a stronger
23:30It's tutoring everything and today we play we compete i am so so happy with the play how they did we lost
23:36Of course and disappointed, but I can't waste time
23:39You can't waste time can the players can this drive your players even further and get even more out of them in these remaining fixtures?
23:47Tomorrow rest day off and thursday friday
23:51Positive and work hard
23:53To prepare the match against crystal palace
23:56Will you rest?
23:57Yes, I will rest tomorrow. Yes, a little bit
23:59Well, enjoy your rest and good luck this weekend. Thank you unai. Thank you so much. Thank you
24:05I'm not sure a manager ever rests, but there we go unai emri will take tomorrow off
24:09He says and then try to come back and and be positive and analyze the game
24:14If they are going to try and take the positives from from this performance, what will they be looking at?
24:18Well, they're all lessons to learn at times of going on to next level
24:20We spoke how they improved from last year or a bigger stronger squad
24:24But then when the club came up against city particularly tonight, you're looking still a bit to go even when it was tired towards the end
24:30City found a way a lot more experience from the winning winning bigger games, but he's a smart guy
24:35He's an experienced manager. He was spot on there rest tomorrow recover get their energy levels up for saturday
24:40And they'll obviously be competing on saturday palace every game tomorrow night
24:42I'm sure they'll make changes, but it's all about any setback in football. It's your reaction
24:47And that this manager over the years anytime he's had a setback has always reacted well
24:51And I fully expect this villa group of players to be ready for saturday can they use the disappointment to fuel that reaction?
24:58Yeah, I think they've got to clear their heads first
25:00I think he's right given the day off tomorrow, you know relax recover
25:03Sometimes a mental breaks as good as anything kelly really is in football especially when you concede such a late goal
25:08Um, but against the semi-final of every cup of the weekend. It's it's a perfect game
25:12They bounce back from at wembley. What more can you ask for and again?
25:15You probably get into that game. You think against palace they're going to be favorites
25:18So it's a great game to bounce back from and and again
25:20It's not to it's not a time of the season to analyze too much or criticize too much
25:24You've got four games left in the premier league. You've got epic up semi-final focus on the next game
25:29And it's important yeah, not about patterns
25:30It's about results at this stage of the of the season for both aston villa and for manchester city as it is as well
25:36For teams like arsenal who are at home to crystal palace tomorrow night
25:41They're trying to push the title race as far as they can
25:46But if crystal palace win at the emirates tomorrow night the title will be liverpool 730 on sky sports premier league then on super sunday
25:54It starts with bournemouth against manchester united. It's one o'clock for all the build up to that one
25:59But if arsenal draw or win against crystal palace, then it goes to anfield on sunday where liverpool will have to win
26:06against spurs to seal the title four o'clock on sky sports premier league for that one
26:15But here at the etihad this evening
26:16It was all about the champions league and manchester city very much the winners they win 2-1 with an injury time goal to send them third in the table
