00:00The doors of the Sistine Chapel close.

00:07The Conclave, tasked with electing the new Pope, meets in private.

00:11The Cardinals, who must be under 80 years old, take the oath to respect the secret vote and accept the result.

00:17Isolated from the rest of the world, they must meet at the earliest 15 days, or at the latest 20 days,

00:23after the death or resignation of the Pope.

00:26The vote takes place in the emblematic Vatican Chapel, with two votes in the morning and two votes in the evening.

00:32The ballot papers are burned in a stove, and the ensuing smoke informs the faithful outside of the result.

00:37If the smoke is black, it means nobody has been elected.

00:40If it is white, a new Pope has been elected, with two-thirds of the votes.

00:45After accepting the position and choosing his papal name,

00:48the elected person immediately becomes Pontifex Maximus, or Supreme Pontiff.

00:53Each Cardinal then pledges obedience.

00:55The proclamation is made from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

00:59Habimus Papam, we have a Pope.
