Taiwan's Cabinet Seeks Legislative Support on Trump Tariff Negotiations

Taiwan's Cabinet says it has a plan for bringing down the U.S.'s paused 32% tariffs on the country, including buying more U.S. goods and investing more in the U.S. to lower the trade imbalance. It also has put forth a plan for helping the most-affected industries, including agriculture and manufacturing. The Cabinet wants the legislature's support, but some opposition lawmakers are concerned that the government is giving in too much to Trump's demands for trade domination.

00:10tariffs. On Wednesday, Trump announced a 90-day pause to the so-called reciprocal tariffs except

00:16on China, putting a halt to tariffs of 32% on Taiwan, although a flat tariff of 10% is still

00:23in place. Taiwan's President Lai Xingde says the country will be in the first round of discussions

00:27with the U.S. as countries clamor to negotiate with the U.S. and get tariffs retracted. Lai has

00:33proposed a zero-tariff basis, suggesting Taiwan would buy more U.S. goods and invest more to even

00:39out the U.S.'s trade deficit. Taiwan's Premier asked for support from the legislature for these

00:44discussions, but opposition legislators are concerned that Taiwan may be playing too nice

00:49with the U.S.

00:57While Taiwan hopes to get on with talks with the U.S. as soon as possible, it will need
