Tornado-warned storms push from Ohio across the Virginias

Severe thunderstorms tore across Ohio and West Virginia on the afternoon of April 14, moving into Virginia as the evening arrived.

00:00We're dealing with a setup here where the downpours are more significant to the south of Pittsburgh.

00:05So areas around northern Kentucky, southern parts of Iowa, of Ohio, I should say, and into West Virginia.

00:11In fact, I'm going to bring up a different form of radar, and we can zoom around with this.

00:15So if we take this full east, thunderstorms continue to move east.

00:18I want to zoom in on this tornado-worn cell that continues to move through parts of the high ground of eastern West Virginia.

00:25So, again, it's not a big area, but 312 people facing that risk of an isolated tornado here.

00:32And looking at this from the Roanoke radar site from south to north, look over to the velocity scan.

00:37It has shown some rotation here.

00:39Again, you can see the red outbound where a decent amount of flow is moving away from the radar site here.

00:44And there you can see near Droop Mountain.

00:46And, again, admittedly, this is not a very populated area.

00:49There are about 312 people within this tornado-worn cell here.

00:53And there's your inbound wind.

00:54And so if there is an isolated tornado, it would be approaching Droop Mountain right now and moving to the east-southeast, approaching Neola.

01:00Now, we're into the very high elevations here.

01:02This is the West Virginia and Virginia State Line.

01:06So we're running along the spine of the mountains there.

01:09So very high elevations here.

01:10And, overall, that tornado warning is in effect here for a little while longer, until about 11, 12 more minutes for parts of Pocahontas County.

01:20There you can see that animation there.

01:21So this runs until 7.15 for that crowd.

01:25A brand-new severe thunderstorm watch has been issued to the east here.

01:28These storms have been aggressive.

01:29So now more of central Virginia, areas like Warrington, under this new severe thunderstorm watch.

01:34In fact, I'm going to show it to you in this form here.

01:36So as we move the map east, a new zone here under an eastern severe thunderstorm watch.

01:43And as I click on that here, this is going to be into a big chunk of the western suburbs of D.C.

01:48all the way west into the mountains near and beyond Leray Caverns.

01:51And severe thunderstorm watch until 1 a.m. for 25 counties in Virginia and more as well, even beyond that.

01:57So that's some of the latest concern there.

01:59And these severe risks are going to continue to plow east into the high ground of West Virginia

02:04and eastern parts of the state there in through western sections of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

02:09And these storms will be moving east through midnight.

02:11And then we'll get a little bit of a reset tomorrow, though.

02:13A new episode of some downpours.

02:15Some lightning.

02:16And some snow breaks out into the interior.

02:18You need to be up in elevation or near the Great Lakes to see much in the form of snow.

02:21But some wet flakes will be falling and some could see an inch or two in the higher elevations.
