00:01Former Law Minister Zayed Ibrahim has defended outgoing Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat

00:07after Nasri Aziz slammed her over her claim of political interference in the judiciary.

00:13Nasri, also a former law minister, early demanded Tengku Maimun furnish proof

00:18and suggested that she be investigated over the allegation.

00:22In a post on X, Zayed said the government should stop pretending to support an independent judiciary

00:28if it cannot handle an honest suggestion from the Chief Justice.

00:32Nasri had defended the current system, saying it was based on long-standing British legal conventions

00:38that were incorporated into the federal constitution during independence with input from legal experts.

00:45Nasri pointed out that Tengku Maimun was also appointed under the same system

00:49and asked why she had accepted it without issue then but questioned it now when she is about to retire.

00:55However, Zayed called it childish for Nasri to suggest that Tengku Maimun's appointment under the same system

01:01should disqualify her from commenting on the matter.

01:04Zayed also claimed that under the Judicial Appointments Commission Act,

01:09the Prime Minister could endlessly reject the names proposed by the commission,

01:13potentially allowing him to appoint his preferred candidates.
