Sotheby's unveils 'The Mediterranean Blue Diamond' in Abu Dhabi   Sotheby's unveils on April 8, 2025 in Abu Dhabi a recently-discovered rare blue diamond. The Mediterranean Blue diamond made its debut at an exhibition hosted at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation and attended by media and guests. According to Sotheby's, it is a 10.03-carat cushion modified brilliant-cut Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond, VS2 clarity, with an estimated price tag of $20 million. The rare diamond is expected to be auctioned in Geneva next month. 00:00It's a great question, what type of collector is going to buy.

00:30We're here for the unveiling of the Mediterranean blue.

00:48This will be the centerpiece of our Geneva High Jewels auction in May.

00:51It's a 10.03 carat fancy vivid blue diamond.

00:55In addition to that, we've brought along a few friends for an exhibition of diamonds.

00:59We have over 700 carats and 8 diamonds.

01:01We value well over 100 million U.S. dollars.

01:17Blue diamonds are amongst the rarest diamonds in the world.

01:20And when you think about all the blue diamonds, the pinnacle of those are vivid blue diamonds.

01:23Think of all the vivid blue diamonds, the pinnacle of those are diamonds over 10 carats.

01:27And so really you're at the peak of the peak of diamond rarity.

01:32The Mediterranean blue was discovered at the Cullinan Mine in South Africa.

01:49It's one of the legendary mines for diamonds that exist.

01:52And subsequent to that, it was studied.

01:55It's been about six months studying it, planning it, meticulously cutting it until you see the vision that you have today.

02:01A lot of people are asking, why Abu Dhabi?

02:17And the reality is that, on the one hand, we certainly have the investment as part of Safavis.

02:22And we're super proud of and very excited about that impetus in the region behind a company that has 280 years of history like Safavis does.

02:30But in addition to that, this has been a huge growth market for us.

02:33The Middle East in general, the UAE and Abu Dhabi.

02:36We feel that here there are many, many collectors who appreciate things of extraordinary rarity.

02:41And the blue, Mediterranean blue, is one of those items.

02:45We have one of those items that we can't do here.

02:59And it's important to see if we can.
